Ancient Civilizations – Autumn 2 2019 (8 weeks) Rationale Year 4 will be learning about the fascinating life and times of the Ancient Egyptians and Ancient Romans. Our spark will see the children deciphering hieroglyphics and Roman numerals to find 6 key facts about Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome. The topic will centre around Tutankhamun and Julius Caesar, allowing us to learn about: Pharaohs, Pyramids, Tombs, The Nile, Life in Ancient Egypt, Mummification, Gods and Goddesses Caesars, Rome, Roman empire, democracy and Our learning will take place in the classroom, around the school and we will visit Castor Primary School. Creativity Independence Aspiration We: Drew and painted images using water colours. Made famous Roman buildings/monuments. Madee shadufs using a selection of materials and used these to produce a display. Make and display factual knowledge about ancient Egypt and Rome. We: Built pyramids out of a variety of materials. Made mini water worlds to investigate the water cycle Made hadufs that represented Egyptian water collectors. Located specific areas on a map of Egypt and Rome using coordinates. Researched key vocabulary based on Ancient Egypt and Rome. Researched famous Ancient Egyptian and Roman discoveries and used our books and Purple Mash to record this. We: We will visit Castor Primary School to go on a Roman walk and look for artefacts – visit was not possible due to unavailability of suitable dates. Spark Brand new topic board split into two looking at the two civilizations: Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome. Children used their skills to decipher a series of riddles which gave them a selection of facts to add to their books and display board. Learning Celebration Children presented their topic by giving some short presentations about their favourite facts and also showcased some of their creations from homework. Ancient Civilizations – Autumn 2 2019 (8 weeks)

Rationale Year 4 will be learning about the fascinating life and times of the Ancient Egyptians and Ancient Romans. Our spark will see the children deciphering hieroglyphics and Roman numerals to find 6 key facts about Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome. We had the opportunity to act as members of Ancient Civilisations and to take part in activities asking ourselves ‘What if we had been there?’

Our work was presented and displayed for visitors to see what we had been learning about

Out of Classroom Opportunities We will visit:

Playground to draw a map of Egypt and specific landmarks there.

Home Learning Activity

Research and draw an Egyptian or Roman God/Goddess.

Think of 10 questions you’d ask Tutankhamun/Julius Caesar.

Build/draw a model pyramid/colosseum

Write an Egyptian code using hieroglyphs or number sentences using Roman numerals

Create your own secret code using symbols of your own choice.

Computing and E-safety We continued to use the internet safely to research facts about Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome. We used Purple Mash to write reports about the discovery of Tutankhamun. We used Purple Mash to practise simple coding.

Links to discrete subjects: Literacy Maths RE Music MFL PHSE In English, we researched facts about Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome. We also produced newspaper reports and other pieces of descriptive writing. In Maths, we used coordinates to plot the location of significant areas in Ancient Egypt and Rome. We also looked at Roman numerals, In Science, we investigated the water cycle, research evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection. In Geography, we drew maps of Egypt and Rome and located specific landmarks there. We identified which continents Egypt and Rome are located in. In Art, we used water colours to paint and create Tutankhamun’s death mask and Roman shields. In DT, we built pyramids and colosseums out of a variety of materials, We made shadufs out of sticks, string, playdoh and a paper cup. In PSHE, we discussed working together effectively in teams and listening to others’ point of view. We got two marble rewards by working together and working effectively.

We will also be showing respect on our school visits and learning how this is portrayed.

We will be ‘staying active’ every day as part of our STARS approach. In addition to this, we practise mindfulness at the end of every day and celebrate children who have exemplified the STARS qualities.

Steps to success

Located Egypt and Rome and learnt about specific landmarks.

Learnt about the water cycle and the importance of the River Nile.

Researched Tutankhamun’s discovery and Howard Carter and Lord Canarvon’s role in the discovery, and the importance of discovering Tutankhamun’s tomb intact.

The children will have looked in detail at some aspects of the Romanisation of Britain, such as the building of Roman roads and bathhouses. In addition to this, they will have learnt about the British resistance of Boudicca and act in role to look at the events of Boudicca's rebellion from different perspectives.

Learnt about the impact the Roman Empire has had throughout history and what impact it is still having today.

The children will have learnt about how Egyptian people used hieroglyphs to communicate and compare the powers of different gods.

Learnt about Egyptian and Roman Gods/Goddess and the significance of them and what they stood for.

Learnt about tomb paintings and the different themes they represented.

Learnt about Roman artefacts paintings and the different themes they represented.

Researched what papyrus is and how it was used and then made it.

Understand the importance of the political systems in Rome and how that shapes democracy as we know it today.

Learnt about the importance of mummification/after life to the ancient Egyptians.

Researched the different types of pyramids in ancient Egypt.

The children will have investigated Hadrian's Wall, examining how, where and why it was built. They will have learnt about the different features of the wall and used maps to determine its location.

How will the project be evaluated? Photos of school trips, experiences, school work, artwork and children’s thoughts and feedback. Outside classroom display updated with artwork, written work and photos.
