From Fireside Gallery to the Dunning GalleryLoveland is known as an art town and that is reflected in your Museum—changing art exhibits that invite you to visit often to see what’s new.

However, the Museum’s roots are in Loveland history—and its importance has not waned. We are both a history museum and an art museum.

In the past, the design of our history exhibits has not been conducive to larger-scale changing exhibits (as we have for the art section), providing little opportunity to share the 35,000+ objects in the historic collection. Thanks to a recent remodel that’s no longer true.

I’m pleased to introduce the new Dunning Gallery, a project by Curator of History, Jennifer Cousino, to provide more opportunity to share history. The Fireside Gallery name is being replaced by the Dunning Gallery, in honor of Harold Dunning, who started the historic collection in the 1930s.

The first exhibit in the new gallery opens in April, featuring a variety of quilts and related objects drawn from the historic collection.

Please join us for the Opening Reception on Friday, April 12, 6 – 8 pm.

FOOTE GALLERYThoughtful, theatrical, and provocative, Love is a Thug is a celebration of the craft and creativity of conceptual artist Scott Young, challenging visitors to reexamine their relationship with romance. Loveland Museum presents an exhibition that reflects a contemplative and honest assessment of this pining for relationship and the challenge of linking yourself to an unknown, with all resultant power struggles, both internally wrought and externally imposed.

Scott Young is a Denver-based artist who works with neon and text to create thought-provoking artwork that challenges viewers to engage with and question the modes by which we co-exist and strive to relate with one another.

“I use neon, and other gases, because it has a soul, a purpose. It’s almost human in its energy. It has this everlasting glow to it that I’m chasing—whether that’s in a person or a piece of art.” – Scott Young

QUILTSWARMTH TO WONDER

DUNNING GALLERYIn 1828, a quilt was defined as a cover or garment made by putting wool, cotton or other substance between two cloths and sewing them together by Noah Webster in An American Dictionary of the English Language. The definition remains much the same today. Whether of rich or humble fabrics, large in size or small, expertly crafted or not, well-worn or pristine, quilts provide a visual framework that contributes to the story of America’s complex history.

This exhibit presents a variety of quilts and related objects drawn directly for the Loveland Museum’s historic collection. Also included are examples of contemporary quilts created in Loveland courtesy of the Studio Art Quilt Associates.

AMELIA FURMANQUEST FOR POWERA HISTORY AS ART EXHIBITION

MEZZANINE GALLERYIn a continuing series that links historic themes with artistic interpretation, Amelia Furman, using her hallmark technique of layered images obscured through the veil of memory, presents a series of new work that addresses the theme of power, as both a logistical struggle and a theoretical concept.

Since the first fire was sparked, humankind has been on a continuing quest to harness nature as a resource for personal and communal use. As time has progressed, our ingenuity and creativity in harnessing power has grown, both positively and negatively. By looking at the history and tools used to capture these natural resources, my hope is that viewers will take pause to consider the implications of our power struggle and what this quest for power points to on a deeper, internal level. Could our desire to conquer nature be indicative or reflective of our inner struggle to gain control of everything we touch?

EVAN COLBERTOBSCURED BY CLOUDS

GREEN ROOM GALLERYEvan Colbert is an artist of the information age. He appropriates visual images from the relentless onslaught that bombards us. In his art, he incorporates logos, trademarks, icons, symbols, pictograms, signage and other ubiquitous images in befuddling and often humorous juxtapositions. Colbert has an inventive and unorthodox approach to materials and techniques for executing his paintings and prints. He often works on found or recycled materials and makes use of industrial products to make stencils, templates and textures.

Evan Colbert received a BFA degree from Metropolitan State College of Denver in 2003. He has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, CO; the Arvada Center for Visual Arts, CO; the Detroit Museum of New Art, MI and others.

His work is in the collections of the Arkansas Art Center, Little Rock; Ericksson Radiotelecommunications, Stockholm, Sweden; the Auraria Center for Photography, Denver, CO and others.

Foote GalleryDocumentary, 2018, Not rated, 88 minutes

When a group of young DIY artists in Santa Fe can’t find a door into the art world, they blow open an entirely new portal with their grit, passion, and tenacity. Within just 10 years- and with a little help from George R. R. Martin- the group called Meow Wolf ultimately hits a cultural nerve and garners massive, unexpected success with their exhibit, House of Eternal Return.

In one of the most unlikely success stories you’ll ever see, Meow Wolf: Origin Story takes us through the meteoric rise of a penniless, anarchic art collective as it attracts the support of Martin (Game of Thrones) and morphs into a multi-million dollar corporation. With the opening of House of Eternal Return, the group sets its sights on new exhibits around the world (including a new ride at Denver’s Elitch Gardens, set to open at the end of April 2019). Origin Story follows the seven eclectic founding members and hundreds of volunteers as they struggle with fracture, loss, success, and failure over a decade – while constantly redefining themselves and what art can really be. Meow Wolf is comprised of over 300 employees creating and supporting art across a variety of media, including architecture, sculpture, painting, photography, video production, cross-reality, music, audio engineering, narrative writing, costuming, performance, and more.

MLK, JR. - HIS LIFE, HIS VISION, HIS LEGACYTHURSDAY | APR 4 | 5:30 PMFoote GalleryFREEThursday, April 4th, 2019 marks 51 years since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and assassinated by a sniper's bullet in Memphis, Tennessee. Those who opposed him gave him many labels: radical, agitator, and threat during the 50s and 60s battle for civil rights. Yet, he remained undeniably hopeful and relentlessly diligent in working to create opportunities, dialogues, and progress for the poor, working men and women, and minorities of every race, color, creed and ethnicity.

Join us for an evening of food, speakers, music, a multi-media presentation and artwork inspired by Dr. King's words. Lend your voice to the conversation and discussion on how to continue his work to build OUR community.

HOT METAL, COLD BREWS

FRIDAY | SEP 27 | 5 – 8 PM5th Street South Side of MuseumFREE ADMISSIONBeer tokens: $5 for a 12 oz. pour(get a free cup with first pour)Food prices will vary

In Loveland’s history of artistic expression, the medium of metal holds strong. Whether cast in bronze, blacksmithed in iron or carefully created in gold or silver, the work of many Loveland artists takes form from hot metal.

In 2004, after one year of teaching at University of Wyoming, Assistant Professor Ashley Hope Carlisle built an iron casting furnace to teach her students how to make varying scale sculpture utilizing scrap iron. With a little elbow grease and a team mindset, they accomplish a unified goal - to make art as a way to communicate with the world all around them. Join the UW art department as they pour iron for Museum visitors. Enjoy locally crafted beer and food during this fall-welcoming beer garden event.
