ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

VISION STATEMENT

The Academic Leadership Development Program vision is to be the premier

program in advancing faculty as academic leaders among research

universities.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Academic Leadership Development Program mission is to identify,

develop, prepare, and advance faculty as academic leaders in and for

Southeastern Conference universities.

GOALS

Be proactive in building the academic leadership pool in Southeastern

Conference universities.

Prepare current and potential academic leaders to meet the challenges of

academic leadership by:

• Developing knowledge and understanding of academic leadership;

• Developing leadership skills;

• Teaching the managerial and organizational skills required to lead

complex organizations; and

• Stimulating potential academic leaders to think critically about the

future of the academy.

University of Alabama Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow

Viola L. Acoff Professor and Head Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering College of Engineering Box 870202, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0202 (205) 348-2080 [email protected] Dr. Acoff received her B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in materials engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She joined The University of Alabama as assistant professor in the Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering in 1994 and was promoted to full professor in 2004. In 2008, Dr. Acoff was named Interim Head of the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering, and a year later she was appointed Head of two different departments in the College of Engineering: Chemical & Biological Engineering and Metallurgical & Materials Engineering. Since 2010, she has served as Head of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering solely. Dr. Acoff teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in welding metallurgy, physical metallurgy and scanning electron microscopy and has a research group with projects involving joining, weldability, and characterization of advanced materials. She has received national and international awards and recognitions, including the National Science Foundation CAREER Award. She has published more than 75 refereed papers and received more than $7 million in research grants. Dr. Acoff is also Site Coordinator for the Alabama Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program where she works to increase the number of science and engineering degrees awarded to students from underrepresented minority groups.

University of Alabama Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow

Luoheng Han Professor and Associate Dean Department of Geography College of Arts and Sciences Box 870268, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0268 (205) 348-7007 [email protected] Dr. Han has been estimating and mapping algal chlorophyll concentration and suspended sediment concentration over the coastal and inland waters using satellite imagery for the last 15 years. He received his Ph.D. in Geography with specialty in remote sensing from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1994. He joined the faculty at the University of Alabama in the same year. Dr. Han was promoted to associate professor in 1999 and professor in 2005. In 2007, he was appointed Chair in the Department of Geography, and two years later he became Associate Dean for Natural Sciences and Math in the College of Arts and Sciences. Originally from China, Dr. Han received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Geography from Northeast Normal University (NENU), China. He was a faculty member with NENU from 1985 to 1988. His research interests include satellite remote sensing and hyperspectral sensing of water quality, and GIS applications. His research has been published in the top national and international remote sensing journals.

University of Alabama Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow

Elizabeth K. Wilson Professor Department of Curriculum and Instruction College of Education Box 870232, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0232 (205) 348-4580 [email protected] Wilson’s career of teaching, research, and service has focused on collaborations between the university and K-12 schools. A former recipient of the Paul W. Bryant Endowed Professorship and professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Wilson received her master’s and undergraduate degrees from The University of Alabama before teaching high school and middle school in Louisiana. She received her Ph.D. from LSU where she served as an instructor before joining the faculty at UA in 1991. Since then, she has received awards for teaching, service, and research. Wilson has served in several leadership positions in the College of Education including program chair in Secondary Education and Head of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Most recently, she has served as Executive Director of the Alabama Consortium for Educational Renewal, which promotes school-university-community partnerships. Her research centers on preservice and inservice teacher education, and school-based initiatives. This work includes co-authoring three Teaching American History grants which have provided almost $3 million to local schools.

University of Arkansas Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow

Mark E. Boyer Professor and Chair Department Landscape Architecture Fay Jones School of Architecture MEMH 230, Fayetteville, AR 72701 (479) 575-7077 [email protected] Mark Boyer is a professor and Chair of Landscape Architecture at the University of Arkansas. Dr. Boyer has served as Chair of the University of Arkansas Faculty Senate Nominations and Elections Coordination Committee and as a member of the Improving Graduation Rate and Election Task Forces. He is a member of the Academic Information System Development Committee for the American Society of Landscape Architects, Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board, and the Council of Educators of Landscape Architecture Programs of Landscape Architecture. He was nominated for the Vice President for Education post of ASLA and has served on the Council of Landscape Architecture Registration Board Task Analysis Subject Matter Experts Committee. He has been twice nominated Co-Director of the UA Wally Cordes Teaching and Faculty Support Center. Dr. Boyer has served three years as Head of the Landscape Architecture Department. He is a four-time department faculty teaching award recipient, has been inducted into the University of Arkansas Teaching Academy, was awarded the Tau Sigma Delta silver medal for excellence in landscape architectural education and received the national CELA Award of Recognition for teaching, research and service.

University of Arkansas Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow

Javier A. Reyes Associate Professor and Associate Dean Economics and Undergraduate Studies Sam M. Walton College of Business WCOB 328, Fayetteville, AR 72701 (479) 575-7105 [email protected] Javier A. Reyes has served as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Director of the Walton College Honors Program since 2009. Born in Mexico City, he holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Texas A&M University and a B.A. in Economics from Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey. He joined the College in 2003 as an assistant professor in Economics. His research interests include monetary theory, policy issues in emerging economies and international economics. He has published in internationally recognized publications and in 2011 published a textbook that covers the history of the economic development of Latin America. Dr. Reyes has participated in multiple committees at the University and received the University’s Faculty Gold Medal Award in 2008. He was promoted to associate professor with tenure and named the Walton College All-Around Faculty Member in 2009. He has worked as a consultant in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the International Monetary Fund. Outside of the University, he serves on the Executive Advisory Board for the NWA ALPFA and as chair of the Diversity Advisory Council for the Jones Center. In 2011, Dr. Reyes was selected as one of the “40 under 40” individuals by the Northwest Arkansas Business Journal.

Lona J. Robertson Professor and Associate Dean School of Human Environmental Sciences Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences AFLS E108, Fayetteville, AR 72701 (479) 575-2252 [email protected] Lona Robertson joined the faculty of the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences (DBCAFLS) in January 2006 as an associate professor and Area Coordinator for the Apparel Studies Program. In these roles she taught a 3 and 3 load each semester and represented the Apparel Studies faculty on the School of Human Environmental Sciences administrative team. In February 2011, Dr. Robertson was named Associate Dean for the Bumpers College. Since joining the faculty at Arkansas, she has published five manuscripts in refereed journals or proceedings and has made eight presentations at national or international meetings. In addition, Dr. Robertson has been instrumental in securing a gift in kind from Visual Retailing (estimated value of $1 million) and submitted two grant proposals, one to the USDA Challenge Grants Program, where Dr. Robertson was the PI, and the second to the Carl B. and Florence E. King Foundation, where she was the Co-PI. Dr. Robertson has represented DBCAFALS on the Academic Standards Committee for a number of years. She has served on the Assessment Committee, NCA Accreditation Committee and DBCAFLS Commencement Committee. She has also chaired the SHES Homecoming Committee, where she was instrumental in planning, organizing and implementing the School’s major alumni function, a homecoming breakfast.

Auburn University Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow

Daniel Gropper Professor and Associate Dean Department of Finance College of Business 503B Lowder Business Building, Auburn, AL 36849 (334) 844-4060 [email protected] Dan Gropper graduated from the University of Maryland and Florida State University before coming to Auburn in 1988 after several years in consulting. He is past chair of the University Senate Salaries Committee and a founding member of Auburn’s Diversity Leadership Council. Gropper became director of the MBA program in 1995, and Associate Dean in 2006. He teaches courses in Economics and Strategy for MBAs. During his leadership, Auburn’s MBA program has added an Executive MBA, a Physician’s Executive MBA, and corporate MBA programs for Jostens and Pratt & Whitney. One stream of his research has focused on financial institutions, including organizational efficiency and how regulation affects these institutions; this work has attracted federal support, and has been published in the Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, the Journal of Banking and Finance, and the Review of Economics and Statistics. Recently, his work has focused on microfinance in Eastern Europe, and international bank ownership patterns. Another stream of his research has focused on educational issues, including the usefulness of standardized tests for older students, as well as the effectiveness of distance education. His contributions were recognized with the College of Business Leadership Award in 2005, and the David and Meredith Luck Professorship in 2008.

Auburn University Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow

Dan LaRocque Associate Dean Academic Affairs College of Liberal Arts 321-F Tichenor Hall, Auburn, AL 36849 (334) 844-2188 [email protected] Dan LaRocque currently serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Liberal Arts and was Chair and Artistic Director of AU Theatre from 2005-2011. He was a member of the National Executive Committee of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in Washington, D.C. from 2003-2009, and his professional acting credits include appearances in theatres throughout the country, including San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre, Houston’s Alley Theatre, Richmond’s Theatre Virginia, and the Utah, North Carolina, Illinois, and Alabama Shakespeare Festivals. In England, he appeared at Alan Ayckbourn’s Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round and his New York credits include appearances on All My Children and Guiding Light. His one-act play, Man Woman Flower published by Playscripts, Inc., has been produced professionally Off Broadway at the Harold Clurman Theatre in New York and by the West Coast Ensemble Theatre in Los Angeles. It has also enjoyed an extensive production history in the United States, Canada, Australia and England.

Auburn University Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow

Ann Beth Presley Associate Professor Consumer Affairs College of Human Sciences 372 Spidle Hall, Auburn, AL 36849 (334) 844-1347 [email protected] Ann Beth Presley serves in the Department of Consumer Affairs in the College of Human Sciences. She is a graduate of Western Kentucky University, The Ohio State University, and the University of Maryland. After a few years of industry work, she came to Auburn University. Presley was Secretary of the University Senate from 2007-2008 and is currently serving as Chair of the University Senate. In 2009, she was one of only 24 individuals chosen for the Attingham Trust Summer School, which has enjoyed outstanding success and is highly regarded by museums, universities and historic preservation societies throughout the world for its careful selection of members and sustained academic standards. Presley was named Educator of the Year by the International Textile and Apparel Association in 2008 and the Outstanding Alumni of the College of Health and Human Sciences at Western Kentucky University the same year.

University of Florida Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow

Tom Dana Professor and Associate Dean Academic Affairs College of Education 140 C Norman Hall, PO Box 117040, Gainesville, FL 32611 (352) 273-4134 [email protected] Prior to joining the dean’s office in 2008, Tom Dana was director (chair) of the School of Teaching and Learning for five years. Closely working with UF’s Lastinger Center for Learning, he was instrumental in creating job-embedded graduate programs for educators in some of the most challenging school settings in Florida. Dana is the co-director, with Alan Dorsey, of UFTeach – an innovative model to increase the quality and quantity of science and mathematics teachers. In 2010, he led the college through a successful accreditation review by the Florida Department of Education and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Dana’s academic interests are in science education, particularly the study of quality educator professional development programs and the development of reform-oriented, subject-specific pedagogical knowledge and practice. Prior to his appointment at UF, Dr. Dana was a member of the faculty at The Pennsylvania State University, where he served as Coordinator of Teacher Education and held the Henry J. Hermanowicz Professorship in Teacher Education. He earned a B.S. in Earth Sciences Education and a M.S. in Science Education from the State University of New York at Oswego, and a Ph.D. in Science Education from The Florida State University.

University of Florida Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow

Alan Dorsey Professor and Associate Dean Department of Physics College of Liberal Arts and Sciences P.O. Box 118440, Gainesville, FL 32611-8440 (352) 392-2230 [email protected] Alan Dorsey received his B.S. in Engineering Physics from Cornell University in 1982 and his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1987. After serving as the IBM Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell from 1987-1989, Dorsey joined the faculty of the University of Virginia, where he earned tenure and became an Associate Professor in 1995. While at UVa he received an award for outstanding teaching as well as an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship. He joined the faculty of the University of Florida in 1997 and served as Chair of its Department of Physics from 2002-2009. A theoretical physicist, Dorsey’s research focuses on the physics of novel phases of matter produced under extreme conditions, such as low temperatures or high magnetic fields. His research is supported by the NSF, and he has also served as the principal investigator for undergraduate and graduate training grants from the NSF and the US Department of Education. Dorsey is an elected Fellow of the American Physical Society, served as the Secretary-Treasurer of the APS’s Division of Condensed Matter Physics, and chaired several national award and prize committees. Dorsey and Dr. Tom Dana are Co-Founders and Co-Directors of UFTeach, a program designed to inspire and train the next generation of middle and high school math and science teachers.

University of Florida Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow

Joanne Jackson Foss Assistant Dean Student and Academic Affairs College of Public Health and Health Professions Box 100164, JHMHC, Gainesville, FL 32610 (352) 273-6017 [email protected] Dr. Foss directs the undergraduate program in health science and facilitates projects designed to enhance academic programs at the University of Florida. She serves as the Dean’s representative to the college faculty council and on university wide committees addressing program assessment, inter-professional education, faculty development and course management technologies. She is Director of Graduate Professional Programs in the Occupational Therapy Program, where she is responsible for administrative duties in the Masters in Occupational Therapy, along with curriculum enhancement, program accreditation, the competitive admissions process, academic retention and advising, and graduation certification. Dr. Foss instructs graduate courses in the occupational therapy program and undergraduate classes in the health science program. She has been selected as College Teacher of the Year three times for her instruction of classes in applied life span human development, and pediatric assessment and intervention. Dr. Foss’ scholarly interests are in professional health education and training, faculty development and mentorship, and clinical assessment and intervention in at-risk infants and toddlers. She received her bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Colorado State University and her master’s in Counseling and Guidance from Syracuse University. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Florida in Higher Education Administration.

University of Georgia Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow

Michael Bartlett Professor and Interim Head Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences College of Pharmacy 0353 RC Wilson Pharmacy, 250 West Green Street, Athens, GA 30602 (706) 542-5390 [email protected] Michael Bartlett is a professor of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Georgia’s College of Pharmacy. His administrative experience includes serving as Associate Department Head from 2004 until 2010 and as Interim Department Head in 2011. As a bioanalytical chemist, his research program is focused on the use of mass spectrometry to improve understanding of targeting, disposition and metabolism of a wide variety of therapeutic agents. He has published more than 100 research articles and book chapters and the quality of his research has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including election to Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and the 2010 Research Achievement Award from the AAPS. In addition, Dr. Bartlett has served as Editor of the journal Biomedical Chromatography since 2003.

University of Georgia Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow

Mike Ferrara Professor and Associate Chair Department of Kinesiology College of Education 3 Aderhold Hall, Athens, GA 30602 (706) 542-4801 [email protected] Mike Ferrara is a professor, Associate Chair and Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Kinesiology. He received his doctorate degree from Penn State University, master’s degree from Michigan State University and undergraduate degree from Ithaca College in Athletic Training and Sports Medicine. He is active in research and has published extensively in leading journals regarding sport-related concussion and exertional heat illness. He has received grants to support his research, the most recent to study environmental factors and the risk of exertional heat illness in interscholastic football players in Georgia. Dr. Ferrara served as President of the World Federation of Athletic Training and Therapy and he is Vice-President for the Board of Certification. He has been involved in international sports as both a leader and clinician, including Director of Medical Operations for the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games and Director of Medical Services for the 1992 Barcelona Paralympic Games. Dr. Ferrara was named the College of Education’s Aderhold Distinguished Professor in 2010, and he was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame, Class of 2009. Recently, Dr. Ferrara was named a 2010 Fulbright Scholar to Ireland where he taught in the athletic therapy program and researched sport-related concussion at Dublin City University, Ireland.

University of Georgia Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow

Susan Sanchez Professor Department of Infectious Diseases College of Veterinary Medicine 0137 Veterinary Medicine Diagnostic Lab, 501 DW Brooks Drive, Athens, GA 30602 (706) 583-0518 [email protected] Dr. Susan Sanchez is a professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases and serves as section head for diagnostic microbiology and molecular biology in the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine Diagnostic Laboratory. She has received numerous microbiology and research mentoring awards. Dr. Sanchez’s research focuses primarily in studying the ecology antimicrobial resistance in bacteria isolated from animals and their zoonotic and nosocomial potential. She earned a Ph.D. and B.Sc. from the Universidad Complutense (Madrid) and an M.Sc. from The Royal Veterinary College (London).

University of Kentucky Academic Leadership Development Program Fellow

Anna Bosch Associate Professor and Associate Dean Undergraduate Programs College of Arts and Sciences 202 Patterson Office Tower, Lexington, KY 40506 (859) 257-6689 [email protected] Anna Bosch joined the University of Kentucky in 1990 and has been an associate professor of Linguistics and English since 1996, serving as Director of the Linguistics Program from 1997-2006. Bosch earned a double degree in linguistics and the College of Letters from Wesleyan University, and received her graduate degree in linguistics at the University of Chicago. Her research interests include phonological theory, field methods and dialectology (primarily Scottish Gaelic and North American). Bosch has authored numerous articles and has more than a decade of fieldwork research on endangered and minority languages. She has twice been a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at Edinburgh University, and has received grants from the American Philosophical Society and the Thomas J. Watson Foundation; she has also served on the selection committee for the Watson Fellowship, and as a consultant in ‘analytical reasoning’ for ETS. As Associate Dean, Bosch oversees curricular and program changes, implementation of the General Education curriculum, programmatic assessment, academic advising, undergraduate scholarship selection, online education, and interdisciplinary programs.

Martha Peterson Professor and Associate Vice President Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics College of Medicine 107 Combs Cancer Building, Lexington, KY 40536-0096 (859) 257-5478 [email protected]

Dr. Peterson is a professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics and a part-time Associate Vice President for Research. She received her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia before coming to the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 1989. Dr. Peterson’s research focuses on understanding gene regulation at the RNA level, using the immunoglobulin genes in lymphocytes and the alpha-fetoprotein gene in liver as model systems. Her research has been funded mainly by the National Science Foundation, but she has also received funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Kentucky Lung Cancer Grant Program. In addition to teaching and mentoring both graduate and undergraduate students at UK, Dr. Peterson has taught multiple molecular biology graduate courses and served as course director in biochemistry for several years. She has served on the editorial board of The Journal of Biological Chemistry and on the Biochemistry of Gene Expression Grant Review Panel for the National Science Foundation. Dr. Peterson recently served as chair of the College of Medicine Faculty Council.

Dr. Snow’s research focuses on connectivity between nerve cells following nervous system injury, with an emphasis on attenuating the effects of inhibitory molecules. After receiving dual undergraduate degrees in Natural Sciences and Modern Languages, and an M.S. degree in Neuroscience from The University of Akron, she worked as a research scientist for the Cleveland Clinic, Department of Brain and Vascular Sciences. She received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Case Western Reserve University, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at The University of Minnesota. She joined the faculty at The University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 1996. As a researcher, Dr. Snow has published 50 scientific articles and mentored 60 students ranging from senior scientist to the high school level. She has been program director for the Faculty Women’s Leadership Program, is a standing member of the President’s Commission on Women and Chair of the Postdoctoral Resource Office. Recently, she has served as Treasurer and Vice President for the National Neurotrauna Society, and as Chair of Women in Neurotrauma Research. Dr. Snow currently serves as Co-Chair for the SACS Reaffirmation of Accreditation/Quality Enhancement Plan effort and recently took on the role of Director for the Office of Undergraduate Research.

Professor Lundy’s professional experience includes public relations for the University of Florida’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and designing and writing publications for the March of Dimes. In 2006, she received the Tiger Athletic Foundation Teaching Award, which recognizes teaching excellence on campus. Lundy served as chair of the editorial board for the Journal of Applied Communications in 2009-2010 and currently serves on the board. Professor Sosnowsky joined Swine Palace and Louisiana State University in June 2001. Since that time, she has produced more than 30 major productions including THE HEIDI CHRONICLES, which was performed at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre and Beijing Central Academy of Drama, and the world premiere of COCKTAIL, which was featured as part of the United States national exhibit at the 2011 Prague Quadrennial. In 2006, Swine Palace was recognized with the Louisiana Governor’s Arts Award for Outstanding Large Arts Organization and the 13th Annual YWCA Greater Baton Rouge Racial Justice Award. Sosnowsky spearheaded the establishment of an arts administration concentration as part of the B.A. in Theatre degree program at LSU. She has been the recipient of a Tiger Athletic Undergraduate Teaching Award and the Phi Kappa Phi Non-Tenured Faculty Award in the Creative and Performing Arts. In 2008, she was named an LSU “Rainmaker.”

She has taught in the sciences in higher education since 1999, and has recently completed two terms of service as a Distinguished Teaching Scholar within the School. Dr. Bouldin’s research interests include student factors influencing pharmacy education (learning styles, motivation, involvement, professionalism), facilitation of innovations in pharmacy education, and informational issues surrounding the use of herbal supplements. Dr. Bouldin is currently involved in the facilitation of assessment activities—at both the programmatic and the classroom level—and faculty and teaching assistant development activities within the School of Pharmacy. Dr. Boyd received her doctorate in Educational Leadership and BA in social work from Delta State University. As interim dean of the School of Applied Sciences, Dr. Boyd is responsible for the supervision of five academic units, including Communication Sciences and Disorders; Health, Exercise Science and Recreation Management; Legal Studies; Nutrition and Hospitality Management; and Social Work. Additionally, the School houses the Center for Health Promotion and Behavior, the Speech and Hearing Clinic, and the Center for Intelligence and Securities Studies. The School is also the home of the National Food Service Management Institute. Dr. Boyd’s research interests include social work services in schools, accreditation issues and teen pregnancy and abstinence education in schools. The author of two book-length studies of women and the First World War, she has two forthcoming books, At Home and Under Fire: Air Raids and Culture in Britain

from the Great War to the Blitz and The First World War: A Brief History with Documents. She is currently engaged in two research projects; the first focuses on the cultural meanings of chemical warfare and the efforts to protect civilian bodies in Europe and its overseas colonies from the Hague Conventions (1899) through World War II, with an emphasis on imperial Britain and France. The second examines gender and war through an analysis of civil defence in 20th-century Britain. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on the cultural and social history of modern Europe and its colonies; race, class, and gender; modern Britain; modern France; and the world wars.

He has been on the University Graduate Council and selection committees for three vice presidents. In 2009, he was appointed to coordinate the President’s Select Committee on Efficiencies and Innovations. A native Mississippian, Dr. Bailey received a B.S. in Dairy Science and a M.S. in Food Science and Technology from the University in 1975 and 1977, respectively. In 1994 he earned his Ph.D. in Toxicology from Texas A&M University, followed by time with the USDA, Agricultural Research Service’s Food and Feed Safety Research Laboratory in College Station, Texas. In 1998 he joined the faculty at the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine where he teaches graduate and professional courses in Preventive Medicine, Animal Welfare, and Food Safety and Food Security in Public Health. Dr. Bailey’s research and service efforts involve working closely with the food animal industry on food safety regulations, identifying pre- and post- harvest risk factors that influence pathogens in food products (i.e., Salmonella and Campylobacter), and developing strategies for their control. He has received funding from the USDA and other public and private sources.

He has conducted research and written extensively about public policy and agricultural insurance both in the United States and developing country contexts. In particular, his work on index insurance products, in both developed and developing country contexts, is widely cited in scholarly literature. In addition to numerous publications in scholarly journals, Dr. Barnett has contributed to several World Bank, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and U.S. Agency for International Development publications. He regularly conducts analysis for, and makes recommendations to, the Risk Management Agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (the agency that implements the U.S. Federal Crop Insurance Program). He has testified before the Agriculture Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives and made presentations on agricultural risk management issues to audiences around the world. Dr. Barnett currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in microeconomic theory and a graduate course on research methods.

Prior to her appointment, she served as Assistant Dean, Director of Clinical Education, and Interim Director of Admissions for the College of Veterinary Medicine, among other roles. As Service Chief of Small Animal Internal Medicine, she established the postgraduate DVM clinical program for residents to pursue specialty training and obtain board certification in Small Animal Internal Medicine at Mississippi State. Dr. Kern received her B.S. in Biology from Mississippi Valley State University and her specialty in Small Animal Internal Medicine from the University of Missouri. She obtained additional specialty training in canine hemodialysis at the University of California-Davis. Her research includes androgen antagonism of glucocorticoid adverse effects in dogs, development of the feline immune system, intestinal permeability in cats, electrocardiographic assessment of periodontal disease in dogs, and ultrasound-guided cerebrospinal fluid collection in dogs. Her research has been supported by the NIH, the American Animal Hospital Association, and other public and private sources. Dr. Kern is a diplomat in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and a member of numerous professional societies.

Dr. Millea received her B.A. in Economics from Western Kentucky University and her Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He joined the USC faculty in 2002. His research focuses on the dynamic structure of nucleons that are the nuclear building blocks of atoms. Pushing the idea of an electron microscope to higher and higher energies allows him to investigate nucleons and their excitations with higher and higher resolution via electron scattering experiments carried out at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Virginia. Professor Gothe is an internationally known leader in nuclear and hadronic physics. He is driven to create opportunities for students and for the University of South Carolina to establish and gain excellency, which is reflected in his commitment to teaching, service, and outreach. He received the Mungo Graduate Award in 2008 and was honored for his dedication and inspiring efforts in graduate student teaching by the Vice President for Student Services in 2007, for his support and dedication to international students by the Office of Student Government & Cultural Exchange Association in 2006, and for outstanding accomplishments in teaching, research, and service by the College of Arts and Sciences in 2006.

His research combines behavioral, neuroimaging, and computational methods to understand human vision. He came to the University of South Carolina in 2010 from Edinburgh University, where he held the Chair in Visual Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience. Prior to Edinburgh, he was professor and founding Director of the Cognitive Science Program and the Cognitive Imaging Research Center at Michigan State University. Professor Henderson is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science, and Editor in Chief of the journal Visual Cognition. He has published more than 100 peer reviewed journal articles and review papers and has edited three books in cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience. He is currently working on two books, a survey of the field for Oxford University Press, and a textbook for Worth. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the US Army Research Office in the US; the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council in Canada; and the Economic and Social Research Council and the Leverhulme Trust in the UK.

Joel Samuels is Deputy Director of the Rule of Law Collaborative at USC. He received his B.A. from Princeton University and his J.D. and M.A. in Russian and Eastern European Studies from the University of Michigan. Honored as the Outstanding Faculty Member for teaching excellence (by student vote) in 2007, Professor Samuels’ scholarship explores the challenges and opportunities presented by changing notions of sovereignty. His written work addresses international boundary disputes, maritime piracy and cross-border litigation. He has published articles in leading law reviews and international law journals and is currently preparing a leading casebook in the field of international law. Before entering academia, Professor Samuels practiced law at Covington & Burling, where he was involved in the ad hoc arbitration of the Eritrea-Ethiopia boundary dispute and led the team that drafted a new Civil Service Code for Eritrea. Professor Samuels has also worked at the World Bank in both Washington (in the Office of the Vice President for Africa) and in Zimbabwe (at the African Capacity Building Foundation), focusing on capacity building in economic policy analysis and development management. Before joining the World Bank, Professor Samuels worked extensively in Russia in the early 1990s on efforts to combat organized crime, and he was an observer of the Russian Constitutional Assembly in 1993. In addition, he has been a contributor to several Russian newspapers and magazines and a variety of African publications.

Prior to this appointment to the Provost’s Office, she served as Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs in USC’s College of Education for 11 years. Dr. Van Scoy has been an assistant/associate professor in the Department of Instruction and Teacher Education since 1990. She has provided leadership in a wide variety of committee roles at the University, most recently chairing USC’s Quality Enhancement Plan Proposal Committee. Dr. Van Scoy has worked in accreditation as a member of the Board of Examiners of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, including service as a speaker, consultant, and accreditation team leader and trainer. She is a Leadership Associate of the National Network for Educational Renewal and a founding member of USC’s nationally acclaimed Professional Development School Network and the National Association for Professional Development Schools. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Chicago before moving to the University of Hawaii, where she was on the research faculty. Boake joined the University of Tennessee as a tenure-track faculty member in the former Zoology Department. Her research is in the area of the evolution of behavior. While at Chicago, she learned the basics of evolutionary genetics, which she applied to behavioral studies. At UTK she studied how mating behavior can lead to the formation of new species of animals. She has also studied how genes and behavior (or nature and nurture) interact to result in individual behavior. Boake was Associate Head of UTK’s Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology for four years, after which she was Head for six years. In the summer of 2008 she resigned from the headship and moved to the Washington D.C. area, where she worked as a Program Officer at the National Science Foundation for two years. She returned to UTK and began working as an Associate Dean in the summer of 2010.

Prior to joining the Department of Management faculty at UT, Dr. Leap taught for more than 27 years at Clemson University, and he served as Chair of its Department of Management. He has also taught at Louisiana State University and the University of Iowa. Dr. Leap also lectures annually at the University of Siegen in Germany. He currently teaches graduate courses in employment law, ethics, and white-collar crime. Dr. Leap is the author of several works, including Phantom Billing, Fake Prescriptions, and the High Cost of

Steve Thomas Associate Professor University Libraries 648G John C Hodges Library, 1015 Volunteer Boulevard, Knoxville, TN 37996-1000 (865) 974-6919 [email protected] Steve Thomas has been a faculty member within the University Libraries since October 1982. His first position focused on converting local bibliographic records (i.e., “the card catalog”) into the machine-readable form that would be the foundation for the Libraries’ first on-line public access catalog. Since then, his efforts have been directed toward maximizing the usefulness of the Libraries’ electronic tools to provide access to the resources purchased by the Libraries to further the teaching, learning, and research needs of Tennessee faculty and students. During these years, the changes in information access and retrieval have been monumental, from dumb terminals to hand-held, mobile devices. On a more personal note, Thomas and his wife, Kathy, share their home with three very special cats. One was a gift from his sister-in-law, one is adopted, and one was rescued from a life on the streets as a stray.

Her Ph.D. is from the The University of New Orleans where her dissertation research focused on transformational and transactional leadership in education. She spent 18 years in student life at Tulane University, shaping the living-learning communities, Lagniappe and TIDES first-year experience initiatives as well as the career and leadership program. In 2003 Dr. King returned to UA as Vice President for Student Affairs, the same campus on which she earned her undergraduate degree. In her tenure, the division increased from 4,200 to 6,200 in on-campus residents, the Office of Parent and Family Programs was established, and the donor-based Student Affairs Leadership Council was created. She led UA’s focus on positive roles and constructive activities for fraternities and sororities, initiated Crossroads Community (multicultural) Center, expanded the Career Center’s advising and placement functions, and instituted the Crimson Care program for individual assistance and well-being of students. She also taught a freshman honors course on Leadership. In 2007 she joined UA’s Higher Education Administration program as Clinical Professor, teaching courses in student affairs administration. Dr. King is also a founding partner in the UA’s new Leadership University for faculty and staff.

She manages budget and personnel issues in the Provost’s Office as well as provides support to the Provost on a range of academic and fiscal issues. She also supports the Chancellor on data collection and analysis. As director of the Office of Institutional Research, she oversees a staff responsible for gathering, assessing, and analyzing data for a number of key University initiatives, such as benchmarking, goal setting, and program review and efficiency. Prior to joining UA, she served as the Senior Assistant for Education for Governor Bill Clinton (1988-92), where she was liaison with higher education, public K-12 education, the educational television network, the State Library, the Arkansas Schools for the Deaf and the Blind and the Arkansas General Assembly. She represented the Governor and the First Lady at national and regional commissions on education issues, including the National Commission on Testing and Public Policy, Southern Regional Education Board, and the National Educational Renewal Consortium. Van Laningham earned her doctorate in English at the University of Arkansas with her major field of study being restoration and eighteenth century British literature. After earning her doctoral degree, she held teaching appointments at Philander Smith College and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

His additional responsibilities include international alumni development, international student recruiting and admissions, development of international campuses, and on-campus curriculum internationalization. Dr. Gillespie is also a professor of Natural Resources in the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences. He came to Auburn in 2010, after 20 years at Purdue University on the faculty of the College of Agriculture and in academic administration, overseeing international programming and strategic planning as Associate Dean of International Programs. A Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Gillespie was trained as a soil chemist and plant physiologist and his area of research was in food and fiber production systems of indigenous peoples and their relation to temperate and tropical production systems in developed countries.

She also serves as Dean of the College of Nursing in the UF Health Science Center. She also manages new faculty and new administration orientation. Dr. Long has been involved in higher degree nursing education for more than 20 years, serving as a faculty member, administrator or consultant at Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland, Husson College and Montana State University. She served as Dean of the Montana State College of Nursing prior to coming to the University of Florida. She served as President of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing from 2002-2004, in addition to serving several terms on its Board of Directors. Dr. Long has also been an invited member of numerous national committees focusing on interdisciplinary education. Dean Long received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from the Catholic University of America, and earned a Master’s Degree in Nursing from Wayne State University, specializing in child psychiatric nursing and nursing education. Her Ph.D. in Behavioral Sciences is from Johns Hopkins. She is an elected member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and Delta Omega. And, she is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and a Life Fellow of the American Orthopsychiatric Association.

Her teaching and research interests include educational demographics, evaluation and assessment, and academic programs. She has received awards for excellence in teaching and in public service. In 2005, she was invited into membership in the UGA Teaching Academy. As Vice Provost, Dr. Morris oversees the UGA Performing Arts Center, the Georgia Museum of Art and the Office of Faculty Affairs. She also continues as Director of the Institute of Higher Education, where she teaches in the Ph.D. and Executive Ed.D. programs, directs doctoral dissertations, and directs the Georgia College Advising Corp, an affiliate of the National College Advising Corps, which places recent college graduates in high schools to assist underserved students with the college going process. She is editor of Innovative Higher Education, a peer-reviewed, international journal focusing on innovations in post-secondary education. In 2004, she was selected as a Fellow in the charter class of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Academic Leadership Fellows program. In 2005, she was selected as a Fellow of the American Pharmacists Association for outstanding service and leadership in pharmacy. She also completed a leadership and management institute for women in higher education through the Higher Education Resource Services program at Wellesley College. From Purdue College of Pharmacy, she is the recipient of a 2010 Distinguished Alumnus Award and new member of the Dean’s Advisory Council until 2013. Anderson was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education by the American Association of Colleges of Education. And recently, she was elected President of its Board of Directors. Dr. Anderson has more than 20 years experience in teaching, learning, assessment and faculty development. She has served as principal and co-principal investigator, or project director on numerous research grants and contracts, and published or presented hundreds of papers. She received her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from Purdue University.

In 2009 she completed the Higher Education Resource Services leadership and management institute for women at Wellesley, and in 2010 she was selected as an American Council on Education Fellow. Dr. Brown Wright received the 2009 American Psychological Association Minority Fellowship Program’s Dalmas Taylor Award for outstanding contributions toward the mentoring and development of ethnic minority psychologists, the 2009 UK Sarah Bennett Holmes award for mentoring of women and the UK Carter G. Woodson Inaugural Award for Outstanding Service. She is also a 2006 recipient of a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Grambling State University. In addition, she has authored numerous scholarly publications and made many invited and refereed presentations at national and international learned society meetings. She received her B.A. degree in Psychology from Grambling, her M.S. in Educational Psychology and Ed.S in School Psychology from the State University of New York at Albany. Currently she is also serving as Vice Provost for Human Resources and Facilities Management. In this role, Dr. Cassidy is a liaison to University governing boards, the LSU Foundation, and other constituencies. She has oversight of human resource issues, facility planning and management, faculty development, and operations of the Office of Academic Affairs. As Vice Provost, she serves as principal advisor to the Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost on campus-wide issues including the University budget, college and departmental operations, as well as the tenure and promotion process. In addition to her administrative responsibilities, she continues to teach classes in music education, supervise graduate research, and maintain an active research portfolio. Peter L. His responsibilities include management of international academic agreements and study abroad policies, coordination of the self-study review process for academic departments and supervision of new faculty development. Dr. Ryan received his B.A. in Natural Sciences from Trinity College, Dublin, and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, Canada. He has held appointments as a postdoctoral fellow at Rutgers University and as a visiting scholar at Princeton University before joining the faculty at MSU in 1999. Dr. Ryan is a professor in the Departments of Animal and Dairy Sciences and Pathology and Population Medicine. He has served as coordinator of the Animal Physiology Graduate Program since 2000. His research is in the area of reproductive physiology with a major focus on uterine pathogenesis and pre-term delivery using domestic animals as models for the human condition. It has been supported by the NIH, NSF, USDA and other public and private sources. Dr. Ryan is Co-Director of the Facilities for Organismal and Cellular Imaging that utilizes bioluminescent, fluorescent, ultrasound and digital thermal imaging technologies to investigate physiological events in living systems in real time and over time. In August 2009, he joined the Office of the Provost as the Associate Vice President Intern for Academic Affairs and was appointed Interim Associate Provost in April 2010.

Her responsibilities include assisting the Provost with the academic functions of the university and working with the Faculty Advisory Committee. She is responsible for the tenure and promotion process, administers faculty hiring for the USC Center for Economic Excellence and for the Faculty Excellence Initiative program. Dr. Curtis also manages the sabbatical program, mentoring program, faculty awards for teaching, research, and service, and oversees the named and endowed chairs and professorships program. She was instrumental in writing the Family-Friendly Polices for USC and in assisting faculty with revisions to the Faculty Manual. She is serving a five-year term as chair of the SECAC Academic Leadership Development Program. Dr. Curtis is a tenured professor and received her B.S. in Chemistry from Mercer University and her M.S. and Ph.D. from The Florida State University in Analytical Chemistry. Her research interests are in energy and fuels, coal liquefaction, coal and petroleum co-processing, asphalt chemistry and asphalt-aggregate interactions, and alternate energy sources. Dr. Curtis has published 96 articles in refereed journals and has made numerous presentations at national and international forums.

She is currently the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Beaman Professor in Marketing. She was formerly Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Assistant Dean for the Full Time MBA Program in the College of Business Administration. She earned her undergraduate and MBA degrees in Marketing from the University of Arkansas, and her Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of Houston. Dr. Gardial has received several teaching awards and has taught in undergraduate, graduate, Ph.D. and management development programs. Her primary expertise and research interests are in the areas of customer value and satisfaction. She has written a book on the topic, as well as numerous articles for journal publications and conferences. She has worked with companies including Procter and Gamble, Frito-Lay, First Tennessee Bank, and TRW. Personally, Gardial has two daughters and loves to ride motorcycles in the mountains and east Tennessee countryside.
