Fundamentals of The FaithSpiritual Maturity In The Church—Part II

Raymond Pruitt

II. Each Member Accepts and Respects the Ordained Authorities in the Church.

" Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves; for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account,

that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you" (Heb. 13:17).

1. The role of authority. Authority in the Church is not merely to provide a channel for the exercise of power by the few, but it is

there to serve the needs of the body. Those who are placed in the Church as authorities (Eph. 4:11) are entrusted with the care and

nurture of God's heritage. It is an awesome responsibility, and only those who walk with God in the fullness of the Spirit are worthy of

such responsibility. "The Lord entrusts those whom He loves to those who love Him" (Luthardt).

2. Theocracy and alternative forms of Church government. The form of government in the Church is theocratic, i.e., the direct rule

by God through the Spirit as He operates through the God-given forms and offices described in Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4. The

important thing to remember about theocratic government is that God Himself, through the Holy Ghost, is the Initiator and Director of

the Church's activities and decisions. The human element is the channel through which He works. If the human will exerts itself

independently of the administration of the Spirit of God, then some other form of government has taken over; it is no longer theocracy.

Some alternative forms of church government are oligarchy, autocracy, and democracy. An oligarchy is a government by the few.

Episcopacy, rule by bishops, is an example of the oligarchical form of government. Autocracy is a government ruled by a single head.

The Roman Catholic Church, with its papal authority and the doctrine of the infallibility of the pope, is a prime example. Democracy is

government by the people. Protestantism, on the whole, functions by democracy. It is difficult to avoid the democratic habit of doing

church business, but it must be avoided, because it tends to exercise the popular will rather than the will of God. The idea of

participatory democracy is deeply ingrained in our thinking, but, when transacting business for God, we must rid ourselves of this

prejudice, for the democratic process is too fraught with structural weaknesses and human frailties to be a reliable tool for conducting

the Lord's business. C. S. Lewis notes that there are two opposite reasons for the democratic approach to church government:

You may think all men so good that they deserve a share in the government of the commonwealth, and so wise that thecommonwealth needs their advice. That is, in my opinion, the false, romantic doctrine of democracy. On the otherhand, you may believe fallen men to be so wicked that not one of them can be trusted with any irresponsible powerover his fellows. That I believe to be the true ground of democracy. I do not believe that God created an egalitarianworld. I believe the authority of the parent over child, husband over wife, learned over simple, to have been asmuch a part of the original plan as the authority of man over beast. I believe that if we had not fallen . . . patriarchalmonarchy would be the sole lawful government. But since we have learned sin, we have found, as Lord Acton says, that "all power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." The only remedy has been to take away thepowers and substitute a legal fiction of equality . . .Do not misunderstand me. I am not in the least belittling the valueof this egalitarian fiction, which is our only defense against one another's cruelty. But the function of equality is purelyprotective. It is medicine, not food. By treating human persons as if they were all the same kind of thing, we avoidinnumerable evils. But it is not on this that we are made to live. . . . Authority exercised with humility, and obedienceaccepted with delight are the very lines along which our spirits live. . . . In submitting to God-ordained authority,we become, as Chesterton said, taller when we bow. We become lowlier when we instruct. As democracy becomesmore complete in the outer world and opportunities for reverence are successively removed, the refreshment, thecleansing and invigorating returns to inequality which the Church offers us, become more and more necessary.”

3. The foundations of authority in the Church. The authority which is exercised by the leaders within a theocracy has its foundation

not in the men who exercise it, but in God. The leaders stand before the Church both in strength and in weakness. As leaders, they

exemplify for the people the basic human condition upon which the authority and the power of the Church depends, namely, a sense of

weakness and a childlike dependence on God. "Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our

sufficiency is of God" (2 Cor. 3:5). While they exercise jurisdiction over the most important area of human existence, the souls of men,

it is through the unction and authority of the Spirit that they serve. It is not their domain, but the flock of God which they oversee. To

them, Peter speaks:

Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not forfilthy lucre, but of a ready mind; neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time (1 Pet. 5:2-6).

The people, while holding their leaders in high regard, are to look continually to God for guidance and strength of the whole Church.

Page 3: Alabama Update February 2015

The leaders and the people together must seek God out of their weakness for the power and authority to accomplish their mission.

4. Theocratic business meetings. The business of a theocratically governed church is done by unanimous agreement. "We move as

one, or we move not at all" should be the rule. It is all too easy to drift from a theocratic government into something else, such as

autocracy, or oligarchy, or democracy, and to still be calling it theocracy. The shepherds of the flock are charged with the

responsibility of leading and overseeing God's people, but they do not rule the church. If they did, the government would not be a

theocracy. When a theocracy deteriorates into something else, it can be vicious and cruel, if it is theocratic, then it means that God is

ruling immediately and directly through the Holy Ghost. Let us consider this matter patiently and carefully, for it is a vital point.

In a theocratic business meeting, there may be spirited discussion, and strong opinions may be voiced, but there need be no element of

defensiveness, because there is nothing to defend since everyone seeks the will of God, and every man knows that his objection alone

can halt any action. This fact breeds a high level of responsibility, for in matters involving the faith and life of other people, it is

awesome to know that one's voice carries that kind of weight. And it is for this reason that a theocracy can function only with Spirit-

filled people who are walking in complete openness to God, and to one another, and to the church. Unless the people are fully

committed to God and His will, it cannot work. "For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after

the Spirit the things of the Spirit" (Rom. 8:5).

The Spirit-filled and Spirit-directed leader of a theocratic business meeting must be able to discern the leading of the Holy Ghost so

that the unity of the Spirit is preserved and the will of God prevails. To always ask that the minority submit to the majority may not be

the divinely directed course to follow in every instance. If this practice becomes the norm for dealing with every case of majority-

minority votes, then we probably have a democracy operating under the name of theocracy. Any man who is a member of the church

should be free to stand and say, "Brethren, before God I cannot bring my conscience to agree with the majority in this matter." In a

theocracy, that brother is respected as a fellow-member of the body. No attempt is made to ride the matter over him, for he too is

seeking the will of God for the church.

Again and again issues have come to the point in our business meetings where all but one or two persons were in agreement, and when

this happens we do not have the full mind of the Lord. Often the issue is tabled and the matter is prayed over until the next meeting.

Larry Christenson exclaims, "How the Holy Spirit thrives on patience, while the devil starves out!". Usually, when the church meets

again, it is sometimes the case that the entire church either comes around to the point-of-view of the one or two people who could not

agree, or the minority finds that they can agree now, or a new development may have entered the picture, and the church finds a

different base on which to agree.

Agreement such as this does not come easily or mechanically. It requires a complete openness on the part of the membership. First of

all, there must be an openness to God. Without persistent prayer, complete honesty, total unselfishness, and a desire to please God

above all else, it will not work.

Secondly, there must be an openness to each other. For example, a particular member may have a clear understanding of what is

needed in the music program of the church, but when it comes to financial matters, he lacks insight and knows little of dealing with

money matters. He may have some good opinions, and may be able to contribute helpfully to the discussions of the financial needs of

the church, but he will probably find that the Holy Spirit will usually have him defer to other brethren who are more qualified in those

matters. At other times, when something concerning the music of the church is being considered, the Lord may work most actively

through the thinking and leadership of that particular member. Yet none of this is so rigid that the Spirit cannot speak His mind through

any member of the church in a quiet, unexpected and trustworthy manner. Indeed, if the Spirit moves a member to speak, and he does

not do so, he would be as much out of order as one who speaks out of order. Larry Christenson notes: "The unity of the Spirit is not a

rubber stamp, conformist unity, but a unity of love, a unity of mutual regard for one another, a unity in the Lord." This is the unity the

apostle Paul speaks of in 1 Corinthians 12:14-20: "For the body is not one member, but many if the foot shall say, Because I am not the

hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it

therefore not of the body? if the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? if the whole were hearing, where were the

smelling? But now God hath set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. And if they were all one member,

where were the body? But now are they many members, but one body."

Thirdly, if a theocratic form of government is to be a reality, there must be an openness to the whole church. Every person including

every leader at every level of the church must be "easy to be entreated" (James 3:17). Any member of the church, down to the least,

should have access to the conference, or business affairs, through one or more of the men of the church and not least, their own wives.

While the women do not take an aggressive role in the business meetings, (The Assembly passed that women do have a voice in the

business meetings now)this does not mean that they have nothing to contribute as members of the body. They are members, and as

such, their influence and their needs must be felt. The essential role of each member of the church as a whole is that of a servant. When

this is recognized, the result will be a deep unity within the body, and this unity will be felt more and more as the church carries on its

task in the theocratic spirit.

Tips ForAbundant

Life

Love. We think

of February as the month of love because of

Valentine’s Day. This holiday usually

focuses primarily on romantic love and also

love for family and friends. Most of us

recall exchanging Valentine cards in school

or making a special card for Mom.

However, I would like to emphasize the

Love of God for us. As Christians, we tend

to dwell on our worship and love for God,

but I have received several reminders

recently of the need to recognize God’s

Love for me.

God loves us more. I am seeking for more

of the fullness of God in my life. I want

Him and I spend time with Him and His

Word to get to know Him better. What I

am realizing is that as much as I desire this

deeper experience, He wants me to have it

even more. We often feel like we must ask

and plead for things as if we need to

convince God to give them to us when in all

actuality He is sitting in front of us holding

that and so much more just waiting for us to

obey Him and accept what He has for us.

God’s Love gave us life. God created us

and we would not exist without Him. He

sent Jesus who gave His life for us so that

we can live in spiritual freedom. There is

no greater love than this which our infinite

minds cannot truly comprehend! I think

this is a truth that we have heard for so long

and hear so often that we don’t really grasp

the extent of it. We woke up this morning

because of God. We experience peace of

mind because of God. We maintain God’s

joy, even through difficulties, because of

God! We need to recognize His Love for

us every moment.

God loves everyone. God loves us so much

that He knows our every move and thought

and the hair on our head. I think sometimes

as Christians we begin to feel like we

deserve that love because of what we are

doing for the kingdom. The Bible clearly

negates that notion. The truth is that God

loved us before we were born into this

world in sin. He did the same for everyone

else as well. He also expects us, as His

children, to love everyone and share His

Love with those who do not yet have a

personal relationship with Him.

Seek every day for the abundant life that

only comes from God.
