The thirty-third day of the Omer is an occasion for happiness during an otherwise mournful period. The explanations begin with the Omer period itself, those forty-nine days that are
counted off one by one between Passover and Shavuot. This is a time of semi-mourning, when weddings and other celebrations are forbidden, and as a sign of grief, observant Jews do not cut their hair. According to a medieval tradition, the plague ceased on Lag Ba'Omer, the thirty-third day of the Omer. As a result, Lag Ba'Omer became a happy day, interrupting the sadness of the Omer period for twenty-four hours. This year, Lag Ba’Omer is observed on Thursday, May 26th.

Our annual meeting takes place later this month on May 26th, and with the new fi scal year, there will be new members of the Board of Trustees and a few changes in the offi cers. Continuity is important, but it is also important to bring in new ideas and have our younger members represented at the board level. The Nominating Committee has aggressively tried to
recruit younger members of the congregation to serve on the board, and I think we have been fairly successful. I intend to allow their voices and concerns to be heard at future meetings.
The synagogue continues to be the location for a variety of wonderful events. Saturdays often showcase one of our youth at a bar or bat mitzvah ceremony. In one week alone, AJ hosted the Music Festival which was a great success, Trivia Night, Live at New York’s 92nd Street Y, and a quintet from the Louisville Orchestra performing in our beautiful sanctuary. Now that basketball and football seasons are over, no more excuses for not attending some of these events.
Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t at least mention that the storm water drainage issue that has plagued our preschool playground for many years, has fi nally been corrected by the Metropolitan Sewer District. A new sewer was placed on Ellerbe Avenue so that storm water run-off would no longer pass through our playground. Many thanks go to Arnold Zegart for his perseverance in getting the city to prioritize this project, and to Howie Evans who worked closely with the workers during the project!

Important Notice for 2016! TICKETS WILL BE REQUIRED FOR
HIGH HOLY DAY SERVICES High Holy Day Seat Reservation forms will be mailed out later this summer. Primarily because of security concerns, the AJ Religious Committee voted to require
tickets be presented by members and guests purchasing or receiving reserved seats for the High Holy Days. Many synagogues around the country are doing this and have been doing so for years. Even though Adath Jeshurun has not had any problems to date, the committee felt that this was the prudent action to take rather than waiting until there is a problem and reacting.
The new policy will work as follows: Each person who purchases a seat reservation will be mailed a ticket. Families ordering multiple seats will receive one ticket for each reserved seat. This way, since many families do not all arrive together, each person will be able to present a ticket for their reserved seat.
Attendees will be asked to show their tickets to the ushers as they enter, but tickets will not be collected as they will be used more than once. Ushers will be directed not to let anyone inside the worship areas unless they have a ticket. There will be a table manned by volunteers set up in the lobby for those who arrive without a ticket. If someone forgets their ticket, they can go to the table and get a blank ticket after it is confirmed that they purchased a seat reservation.
Anyone who cannot afford to purchase seat reservations is asked to contact Rabbi Slosberg well in advance of the High Holy Days in order to receive a ticket. No one will be turned away from worship services due to their inability to pay for seat reservations.
