AJ “SHABBAT-LUCK” DINNER

AJ’s next Shabbat-Luck Dinner is scheduled for Friday evening, February 14th. “Shabbat-Luck,” is a vegetarian & dairy potluck meal taking place after the conclusion of Kabbalat Shabbat services at around 6:30 p.m.

This pitch-in meal is free of charge and open to the community. Come enjoy the camaraderie of family and friends while celebrating Shabbat with a casual vegetarian-dairy meal, complete with wine and dessert!

Since the meal is not being prepared at AJ, none of the food may be taken into AJ’s kosher kitchens. Additionally, we ask that you bring serving utensils with you for your dish, since AJ’s kosher utensils may not be used. Keep in mind that no meat, nor meat by-products may be brought in. Vegetarian or all-dairy dishes are fine. Please bring items in disposable aluminum pans. If cooking isn't something you enjoy, consider bringing something pre-packaged such as wine, challah, or dips containing a kosher symbol.

This program is generously underwritten by a grant from the Jewish Heritage Fund for Excellence. Questions? Contact Cybil Flora at [email protected] or call 502-794-1469. We look forward to celebrating Shabbat with you! Please sign up at: www.adathjeshurun.com/potluck.

CASTING CALL AT AJ!

AJ’s SH’MA Theatre Group will be holding auditions for a new production called “A Satisfied Mind,” written by Yehudah Jai Husband. This play is a comedic drama about a reclusive Jewish

businessman, Levi Abrams, in 1940's Atlanta, and his friendship with his holy roller housekeeper, Elly Mae. A play about religious imperialism, “A Satisfied Mind” takes a look at how convictions can both divide and bring people together.

Film Director, Yehudah Husband, will be holding auditions at AJ. All are welcome to participate regardless of faith or affiliation. There is no cost to participate! While this is a seven-person ensemble, three of the roles have been pre-cast. We are currently looking for the following four age and culturally specific roles:

Rabbi Solomon: Caucasian male age early 40’s thru 60’s Ethan: African American male age 8 to 10 years old Lisa-Ann: African American female age 8 to 10 years old Luther Healy: African American male age mid-20’s to 30’s

AUDITIONS will be held at Adath Jeshurun by appointment on the following dates:

• Sunday, February 2nd from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. • Monday, February 3rd from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

For auditions, please prepare a two-minute dramatic monologue and be prepared to cold read from the script. Also, bring a headshot and theatre resume to the audition. For more information or to schedule an audition, contact Yehudah Husband by phone at: 502-500-5167 or by email at: [email protected].

REHEARSALS will take place in March, April, and early May, and will typically be held on Sunday afternoons, and some weeknight evenings from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. The rehearsal schedule and performances will be flexible around cast schedules. All rehearsals and performances will be held at Adath Jeshurun, 2401 Woodbourne Avenue, Louisville, KY 40205, unless otherwise specified.

ORDER FORM ~ AJ CEMETERY BEAUTIFICATION & PLANTINGS

AJ strives to keep our cemetery clean and beautiful to honor the memory of loved ones who are buried there. Each spring, opportunities are made available for families to participate in cemetery beautification. Begonias may be ordered for individual gravesites in the AJ Cemetery. Additionally, a tax-deductible donation may be made to help fund Cemetery Beautification which includes such items as communal flower gardens, headstone cleaning, as well as other enhancements which take place throughout the year. Contributions are very much appreciated, and donors’ names will be listed in The Messenger. Please use this form to order begonias and/or to become a Cemetery Beautification Donor. You may also make these arrangements online at: www.adathjeshurun.com/cemeteryplantings. Questions? Call Belinda Lasch at 458-5359 or email: [email protected].

SEASONAL BEGONIA ORDERS • Order deadline to have begonias planted in time for

Mother’s Day (weather permitting): April 13, 2020. • All begonia orders must be prepaid. • Prices below include the cost of the begonias, the labor

to plant them, as well as the irrigation and maintenance.

• AJ is required by law to collect 6% Kentucky Sales Tax on begonia orders. Tax is included in the prices listed below:

Single Headstone $ 95.40

Double Headstone $137.80

Triple Headstone $169.60

AJ Cemetery Policy Update: Adath Jeshurun is taking steps to streamline maintenance and keep expenses down, while also preserving the uniformity and beauty of the cemetery . The boxwoods which are planted on some gravesites have become very expensive to maintain. Therefore, as of January 1, 2020, boxwoods were no longer permitted to be planted in the AJ Cemetery. Boxwood plants which currently exist in the AJ Cemetery will be permitted to remain until such time that they either become overgrown, or deteriorate. However, no new boxwood orders will be accepted. We appreciate your understanding of the need to prioritize the dollars available to maintain the AJ Cemetery.

Every five years, Jews from around the world may participate in the World Zionist Congress Election. The Conservative Movement receives a percentage of the delegates who make crucial decisions affecting the future of the Jewish State. This is vitally important, as decisions made by Congress influence millions of dollars in funding that is desperately needed by the Conservative Movement in Israel.

What is the World Zionist Congress Election? The World Zionist Organization serves as the parliament of the Jewish people and comprises 500 delegates who meet in Jerusalem every five years. Delegates have the power to exert ideological influence on both Israeli society and on global Jewish issues, as well as to allocate financial and other resources to various organizations in Israel. The 38th World Zionist Congress is scheduled to meet in Jerusalem in October 2020. The upcoming election will determine the size of the various delegations to this Congress.

What is MERCAZ? MERCAZ is the official slate of the Conservative Movement in the World Zionist Congress Election, and represents the interests of Conservative /Masorti Judaism.

Why should I vote? This is a vital opportunity to gain a share of government dollars for Conservative Movement programs. The ultra-Orthodox factions in power continue to block attempts to advance major decisions which benefit Conservative Jews. Casting your vote in the election for the MERCAZ Slate will ensure that the Conservative Movement receives the greatest possible voice in both funding and important decisions, such as recognizing life-cycle events and conversions performed by Conservative rabbis, religious pluralism, and equality for all Jews.

How do I vote? You may vote by paper ballot or online through March 11, 2020. There is a nominal $7.50 charge to process each vote. To vote, visit www.mercaz2020.org or text VOTE to 917.336.1162. Thank you for your vital participation in this very important election!
