039Robert EffronCITY OF POUGHKEEPSIE - Robert Effron, 94, of the City of Poughkeepsie, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. Mr. Effron was a sales representative for Efco Products in Poughkeepsie retiring in 1996. He was a member of the Jewish Community Center, the Harding Club and Temple Beth-El. Mr. Effron served in the US Army as a Sergeant in Europe, Philippines and Japan. Born Aug. 13, 1914 in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of the late Samuel and Fannie Labensky Effron. He was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School and attended NYU. On March 24, 1946 in Poughkeepsie, he married Edith Leibman. Mrs. Effron survives at home. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Emily Effron of Poughkeepsie; his daughter and sonin-law, Jean and Stanley Friedman of Poughkeepsie; his daughter and sonin-law, Elizabeth "Betsy" and Joseph Kisch of Poughkeepsie; his sister, Sadie J. Kahn of Beacon; his sister-inlaw, Sadie Effron of Poughkeepsie; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, William Effron and his sisters, Estelle Dobo and Eva Golden. There will be no calling hours. Shiva will be held on Sunday and Monday at 7:30 p.m., at the family residence. Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 16, at Temple Beth-El, 118 So. The eldest child of pioneering Abraham and Emma Nelson, Sara was the beloved wife of Max Efron for 63 years. Mr. Efron died October, 1993. Sara was born in New York on March 2, 1909, arrived in Seattle at the age of 6 months when many streets were yet to be paved, cable cars climbed Yesler Way and horses were the transportation of the day. A leader in Jewish Women’s organizations and a contributor to the community at large, she received many honors for her efforts. Sara is survived by her loving children, Phil (Janice

Dowell) of Nashville; David (Edie Kaplan) of Oakland; and Deborah of Bellevue. Grandchildren Dara (Karen Sukenic) of Berkeley; Donna (Barry Raskin) of Austin; Michael (Clare) of Melbourne, Australia; Ted (Seattle); Erica (Nashville) and Gregory of Spokane. Also survived by 4 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her grandson Howard Efron. Special thanks to long time caregivers Kay Smith and Diane Shepard. Almost four years have gone by since the passing of Zussia Efron, Jewish art connoisseur and researcher. On 18 July 2002 in Jerusalem, at the age of 91, Zussia returned his soul to his Maker. In his case this traditional Jewish phrase is in order, for Zussia represented the fertile co-existence, now long gone, of secular Jewishness and yiddishkeit. A socialist Zionist and former member of Ha-Shomer ha-Za‘ir, he seemed at the same time to be the quintessential representative of the Jewish culture that evolved over many centuries in his native eastern Europe. At least, that is what he was to us – his disciples who took an interest in that culture and art. We were not disciples in the academic sense of the word, for Zussia had never entered upon an institutional academic career. Originally trained as a printer and artist, he was probably the last of the older-generation semi-academic experts whose astonishingly broad knowledge was acquired through intensive reading, field research, and professional encounters, all motivated by his total commitment to and personal involvement with his subjects of inquiry.

Zussia (Eliezer) Efron was born in 1911 in Vilna, Lithuania, the son of Chaya and Leib Efron. His father was a renowned local printer and copper engraver, as was his grandfather, Zvi Hirsch, before him. Hirsch Efron befriended sculptor Mark Antokolsky, one of whose small sculptures was kept in the family home. “I was brought up,” Efron relates in his autobiographical notes, “on my father’s love of his artisanship and his strong attachment to Jewish art and tradition.” Together with his family and fellow

Lithuanian Jews, as a child he witnessed the upheavals and tribulations of those troubled historical times of wars, revolutions, and pogroms. Vilna of the 1920s, Efron’s formative years, however, was a bustling center of Jewish-Yiddish scholarship and culture, with its diverse educational institutions, the Vilna Troupe theater group, the Union of Jewish Writers and Journalists, the Historical-Ethnographic Society and Museum (founded by S. An-Sky in 1917), and – most importantly – the YIVO Institute (founded in 1925). While a student at the (Jewish-Bundist) Real-Gymnasium, he also attended drawing, engraving, and art history classes at the Hilfe durch Arbeit Art School and frequented the Ethnographic Museum, where he drew close to director Chaikl Lunsky, secretary of the Historical-Ethnographic Society and Efron’s first mentor in Jewish art and ethnography. No wonder, then, that the subjects of his first drawings and engravings were the ancient synagogues of Vilna and neighboring shtetls. At the same time, he continued working at the family’s printing shop, being trained by his father in Hebrew typography, contemporary graphic and printing techniques, and binding – “the art of book-making from A to Z.” Efron’s experiments with Hebrew typography can be seen in several posters he designed and printed in the early 1930s for events organized by Vilna’s Ha-Shomer ha-Za‘ir youth movement, presenting a combination of rather modernistic typography and schematic Zionist iconography (now in the collection of the Ha-Shomer ha-Za‘ir Archives, Givat Haviva).

Efron joined Ha-Shomer ha-Za‘ir in 1924 at the age of thirteen. In 1935, as a member of the movement’s hakhsharah (group training for life on a kibbutz), he emigrated to Palestine, at first working as an agricultural laborer in villages in the Sharon Plain, and finally settling in Kibbutz Kfar Menahem (1940). He periodically traveled to Jerusalem to study sculpture with Zeev Ben Zvi in the Bezalel Art Academy. In 1946, after his discharge from the British army – in which he served during WWII – and subsequent work with Jewish DPs in Italy, Efron resumed studies in Bezalel, taking drawing, graphic design, printing, and typography classes while majoring in art history. He simultaneously continued sculpting at Ben Zvi’s studio; two of his plaster sculptures (Remembering the Vilna Ghetto; Motherhood) were displayed in the inauguration exhibition of the firstJerusalemArtistsHousein1949.Inthatsameyear, following a proposal by director Mordechai Narkiss, he became a staff member of the Bezalel National Museum, where he worked for three years with art historian and acting-director Fritz Schiff.In 1953 Efron was appointed director of the Mishkan le-Omanut Museum of Art in Kibbutz Ein Harod, a position he held for twenty-four years, until his retirement in 1977. He was selected for that position by artist Mordechai Ardon, then Arts Consultant to the Israel Ministry of Education and Culture. Ardon apparently found Efron suited to resume the work of Chaim Aptiker-Atar, MAEH founder, who was seeking to collect “works of art created by the Jewish people, and use them as vehicles to pass on the distinctive values of the now-destroyed Diaspora Jewish life to children and youth […].” The museum’s Jewish collection had been accumulated largely during the late 1930s through the efforts of kibbutz members who served as “rescue emissaries” to European Jewry. Continuing the museum’s cooperation with kibbutz movement members (among them Miriam Nowicz of Kibbutz Lohamei Hagetaot), Efron further enhanced the museum’s collection of works by pre-WWII European – mainly Russian and Polish – and US Jewish artists, as well as that of Jewish folk art.

During those years Efron also started publishing. A select list of his more than thirty publications includes the pioneering Jewish Art (Tel Aviv: Massada, 1957; Hebrew), the first comprehensive and chronological presentation of the subject from early antiquity to modern Israel, co-edited with Oxford historian Cecil Roth; monographs of artists (Atar, Giladi); encyclopedia entries (The Hebrew Encyclopaedia, Encyclopaedia Judaica), essays and articles in periodicals (Jewish Studies, Ariel, Museum); introductions to catalogues; and press articles and art reviews. Efron’s contribution – through his publications and museological work – to the development of Israeli artistic and cultural perceptions will be discussed in extenso in a forthcoming essay by Galia Bar-Or, director of the Museum of Art Ein Harod, in her introduction to a collection of Efron’s articles which she edited (forthcoming in late 2006, the Museum of Art Ein Harod).

Several of Efron’s articles are indicative of his views regarding the importance of the collection and study of Jewish (eastern European) art and the resumption, in Israel, of the work begun by scholars, collectors, and Jewish museums in the first half of the twentieth century and abruptly ended by the Holocaust. He perceived Jewish folk art which developed between the Baltic and the Black Seas during the “golden age” of Polish-Lithuanian Jewry (sixteenth to eighteenth centuries) as a unique cultural phenomenon, the sole truly authentic artistic form created by Jews anywhere in Europe. The final annihilation of eastern European Jewish civilization – the one in which he grew up – during WWII kindled in him a gradually growing sense of urgency to commemorate its artistic expressions, eventually becoming his life mission. One way of achieving this was by education, through both institutional and public lectures. Between 1950 and the mid-1980s Efron taught courses in Jewish art and folk art in, among others, Bezalel, Haifa University, and several teachers’ seminars. His public lectures on these subjects, however, are far more numerous: between his 1953 lecture tour in kibbutzim throughout Israel and the 1990s, his public lectures number over 100, mostly devoted to Jewish ceremonial and folk art.

However, Efron’s most significant contribution to the study of Jewish folk art was most likely the survey and documentation of its remnants in eastern Europe and the Balkans. In the course of his three-decade-long field survey, Efron produced about 15,000 negatives and slides, accompanied by written notes, taken mainly in cemeteries and synagogues: tombstones, synagogue wall paintings, Torah arks, ceremonial objects, and interior decorations. These are now in the holdings of the Center for Jewish Art of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Visual Documentation Center at Beth Hatefutsoth in Tel Aviv. His almost annual travels were enabled by modest travel grants, very often complemented from personal resources. Between 1961 and the mid-1990s, Efron traveled and worked in Jewish communities and sites in Greece and the former Yugoslavia (46 sites, including Split and Sarajevo), Romania (35 sites in Moldova and Bukovina), the Soviet Union (Leningrad, Samarkand, Tashkent, Vilna, and Minsk, among others), and over 100 Jewish sites in Poland and Ukraine. Like much of what he did, in accordance with Efron’s “artistic temperament” this comprehensive documentation project was managed in a rather associative-intuitive manner and, unfortunately, has never been published. However, the detailed knowledge he acquired

on his journeys and in numerous research encounters was of unique value, unparalleled on the Israeli – and indeed the international – Jewish art and folk art scene.

Efron willingly consulted almost anyone active in this field: students, researchers, writers ,filmmakers, and museum curators from the Jewish Museum of New York and the University of Texas at Houston to the Polish National Library in Warsaw, and the Hebrew University, the Israel Museum, Yad Vashem, and Beth Hatefutsoth in Israel.

Having begun his Balkan and eastern European documentation project when almost all the major pre-war Jewish centers were behind the Iron Curtain, Efron gradually became a prominent information agent and mediator. He was one of the first Israeli researchers to establish contacts and cooperate with Jewish art scholars and museum curators in the eastern bloc. He served as consultant in the 1970s and 1980s to projects and museum collections in the Soviet Union (Leningrad, Vilna, Lvov), former Yugoslavia (Belgrade), and Poland. Starting as early as 1957 with his survey of the Jewish collections in the Warsaw Historical Museum and the Jewish Historical Institute (ZIH), Warsaw – where the study of Jewish art and folk art was resumed shortly after the war – became a major center for Efron’s scholarly contacts and endeavors. In the new era marked by the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1989, the status Efron had gained as eastern European curators’ consultant and confidant gained further momentum. He now became instrumental in several museological projects, among them the establishment of a Jewish Museum in Vilna (today The Vilna Gaon Museum), by which, he felt, he was paying back “an historical debt” to the city’s Jewish Ethnographic Museum of his youth. In Israel, the most significant outcome of Efron’s former Soviet Union contacts was probably Beth Hatefutsoth’s 1994 exhibition of the Lvov Jewish collections, to which he was deeply connected, and its catalogue (Treasures of Jewish Galicia, Tel Aviv: Beth Hatefutsoth, 1996). This was a peak of his ongoing involvement with that institution as consultant to changing exhibitions and to the Photo Archive.

During all his post-retirement years Zussia worked in and from a small studio-apartment, not far from his home in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Katamon. This packed treasure-trove was frequented by scholars, students, and lovers of Jewish art from Israel and the world over who sought his advice. It housed a unique library on Jewish art, mostly eastern European, numbering some thousand volumes, brochures, catalogues, albums, textbooks, and maps in Yiddish, Hebrew, and all European languages acquired by him during half a century (now in the Israel Museum, the Jewish National and University Library, and the Jewish Museum Munich).

Zussia’s parents and one sister perished in the Holocaust. His other sister, Sheine, a painter, survived and joined him in Israel, where she later passed away. He is survived by his wife Irena and only son, Ariel, a Bezalel graduate and promising media artist in his own right. Thus, one might say, throughout all the twentieth-century upheavals of Jewish history – and art history – the Efron dynasty of artists was never interrupted.

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Mordechai Eliyohu (Muttel) Rabinowitz zt”l, one of the last few remaining members of Mir Yeshiva in Europe. He was niftar at Shaarei Tzedek Medical Center in Yerushalayim late last night.Rav Rabinowitz was a son of Rav Shraga Feitel Rabinowitz zt”l, the Zabliner Rov. In addition to having learned in the Mir in Poland and for a short while in Shanghai, he also learned in the Baranovitch Yeshiva under Rav Elchonon Wasserman zt”l. After the war, Rav Rabinowitz immigrated to Canada and subsequently met and married his wife, Rochel, a daughter of Rav Chaim Eliezer Samson zt”l, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivah Chofetz Chayim in Baltimore. He then accepted a position on the hanhallah of Yeshivah Mercaz Hatorah for 25 years until emigrating to Eretz Yisroel. The levaya is being held this morning in front of Yeshivas Mir-Yerushalayim. Rav Rabinowitz is survived by his wife and three children and their families: his two sons, R’ Shloime and R’ Avi, and his daughter, Malca, wife of R’ Shloime Gottesman, all of whom reside in New York. ITHACA - Marcia Stone Paige of Ithaca (formally, of Kingston), died on September 1, 2008 at Oak Hill Manor Nursing Home. Born on February 16, 1926 in Kingston to the late Dinah and Sam Stone, she is survived by her daughter Julie of Ithaca and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and close

friends. She was predeceased by her husband Milton Paige in 1978 and her brother Merrill Stone.

Marcia graduated from Kingston High School in 1943, attended Penn State University, and graduated from the Ohio State School of Social Work. In her early professional years she was employed as a social worker for Ulster County and later was a business store owner until her retirement.

The loves of her life were family – especially her daughter Julie. She was most fond of her young cousins Michele Weiner of Kingston and Pamela Weiner Dyson of Fort Lauderdale, Florida who were like grandchildren to her. She had many close relationships with her first cousins on both her mother and father's side and spent much time during her childhood in Poughkeepsie with her Aunt Dora and Uncle Morris Epstein, and her first cousin Betty Effron Katzin. She had a special bond with her niece Roslyn Stone of Pound Ridge and her great niece and nephew – Daniel and Jennifer Pollock, both of Pound Ridge.

Marcia loved to tell stories from her past – family stories and stories about the special connection of the families who lived on Hone Street – a very closely knit neighborhood. Marcia also loved to read. Mysteries were her favorite as well as books on history and current events. She became known at the library as the "history and mystery lady".

Marcia was committed to community service both in her religious community and the Kingston/Ulster Communities. She and her husband Milton were founders of the Ulster Academy and both served on the Board of Trustees. Marcia volunteered for Planned Parenthood and was very active as a lifetime member of Hadassah before she left Kingston. She was one of the founders of the gift-wrapping fundraiser for Hadassah Hospital during the holidays. After retirement, Marcia had two volunteer commitments that were very important to her. She served as an ombudsman for a nursing home through the Ulster County RSVP. The residents of the Moran Rest Home in Gardiner were very important to her as she advocated for their needs. She also thoroughly enjoyed her work as a volunteer for the Kingston Heritage Visitors Center where she was able to "come home again" to downtown Kingston and share stories of the Roundout from her childhood.

Marcia left Kingston in 2002 to move to Ithaca to be closer to her daughter. Her happiest times in Ithaca were her years in Longview where she developed friendships similar to those she enjoyed in Kingston. She also developed special relationships with her daughter Julie's friends who became her close friends too.

Marcia will be remembered at a service at Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Avenue, Kingston, on Thursday at 12 Noon. Julie will be sitting Shiva in the home of Julian and Maida Weiner of Kingston, Thursday night and at the home of Julie Paige in Ithaca on Saturday night where she will welcome friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospicare and Pallative Services, 172 East King Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.

Roz Roose, 90, Artist, bon vivant

Roz Roose, 90, of New York and Provincetown died peacefully at her home in New York City on March 5 after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late Dr. Lawrence J. Roose.

As a child, Roz came from Russia in the large wave of immigration that happened in the 1920s. She and her parents were turned away from Ellis Island and made their American landfall at Deer Isle, Maine instead. The family settled in New York and Roz received an education in both nursing and art. She studied painting at the Art Students League and Cooper Union in NYC but set out on a career as a psychiatric nurse. It was a fortunate choice since it led to a posting at a psychiatric hospital where she met her future husband, Lawrence, who was a psychiatrist there. The couple were married for over 40 years.

As a young girl she had visited Cape Cod and later she and Lawrence began to vacation on the Cape, first in Wellfleet, then Truro and finally Provincetown. Her daughter Gina Roose recalls the early days in Provincetown when her parents lived at the affectionately named Garbage Gables in the East End of town. Roz, who was famous for her parties, fit right in with the assorted writers and artists who lived in the Gables. Gina recalls that Eugene O’Neill had lived and written there and had left scrawled poetry on the rafters of the house. The building got its name from the solemn procession of artists who took out their garbage — mostly bottles and cans — on Sunday after a long weekend of partying. One party was so well attended that the large deck on the building collapsed, spilling the assorted group out on the lawn with no more damage than one broken toe.

In Provincetown, Roz returned to painting, working in the abstract expressionist manner she had studied. She was a close friend of artist and teacher Hans Hofmann and with the entire extended family of artists here during those years.

The family later moved to a more sedate location and when that went up for sale, purchased The Waterfront Apartments with four other families. Roz’s children grew up on the beaches of Provincetown and now her grandchildren are doing the same.

“It sounds like a cliché but she was larger than life,” Gina says. “She was very welcoming, no one was ever left out.” But as an artist who loved her summer home, Gina says, “She was never happier than when she was standing on her deck in Provincetown looking out at the light over the bay.”

In addition to her daughter Gina, she is survived by two sons, Steven of New York City and Ron of Maine and Los Angeles; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday at the Riverside Memorial Chapel in New York City and the family plans a luncheon and party of remembrance in Provincetown for her friends here at a date to be set in August.

Edith d'Addario, who was the director of the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City's Greenwich Village for 43 years, died on March 4 at 84 of complications from emphysema, reports The New York Times.

D'Addario began her career at the Joffrey soon after taking one of her daughters to classes at the school (originally called American Ballet Center), which opened in 1953 in a converted chocolate factory. Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino had only recently established the company, which had previously been a touring ensemble.

The Times reports that d'Addario's career with the Joffrey began by chance: she answered a ringing phone one day while waiting to pick up her daughter. She was appointed assistant to Joffrey and Arpino in 1961 and five years later she was named executive director.

While at the school she expanded classes for children, pre-professional studies and a summer intensive training project in four major cities in the United States. She also established ballet classes for deaf children, helped form several junior touring ensembles and coordinated the casting of children's roles in the Joffrey Ballet productions of The Nutcracker and Petrouchka.

In her book Joffrey Ballet: Robert Joffrey and the Making of an American Dance Company, Sasha Anawalt writes that "as Joffrey's fierce but benevolent watchdog, [d'Addario] also sometimes made donations to rescue him and the school from financial trouble. Her generosity extended to Joffrey's students: She contributed toward the electricity bills of many teenage scholarship students and often steered them patiently through the terrors of living in New York."

She continued to direct the school until 2005, when she was succeeded by her daughter Gail d'Addario.

Benjamin Vlosky

Benjamin Vlosky, of Old Nyack Turnpike, Spring Valley, and a resident of the community for 35 years, died suddenly on Sunday when he was stricken with a heart attack while traveling to New York City. He was 65 years of age.

Mr. Vlosky had been the proprietor of Bondell's jewelry store, Nyack for the past 15 years. Born in Poland, he migrated to this country as a boy of 10 years.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lena Cibulsky Vlosky; a son, Marvin Vlosky, Pearl River, who is a BOCES employee in Westchester County; a daughter, Miss Edna Vlosky, New York City, and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held yesterday at the Sniffen Funeral Home, Spring Valley, with Rev. Abraham Krantz of Temple Israel,Nyack, officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nyack.
