When it first entered service, the A340 opened true long-haul operations, expanding the Airbus wide-body family. The A330 and A340 have since become the best-selling wide-body family of all time.In an ever-changing world some flag carriers like to keep their fleet age very low, it’s natural that a proportion of their aircraft will move to the used aircraft market, the A340 is no exception. The A340 Family of three variants, the A340-300, -500 and -600, is now available at very competitive lease rates which makes them economically affordable prospects for carriers looking at long-haul opportunities, especially as they await delivery of new-generation aircraft, such as the A350 XWB.

A340 appeal The A340 appeal is based on its availability, commonality with other Airbus types, its performance as well as its excellent payload accommodation. Now that older B747-400s are well into their retirement phase, the availability of significantly younger A340-600s equipped with modern avionics, make them the smart interim upgrade. The four-engined A340 is not subject to “Extended-range Twin-engine Operations” (ETOPS). Operators can fly the most direct routes and operate efficiently from ‘hot and high’ airports, potentially off-limits to other aircraft. Furthermore, the A340 fits seamlessly alongside other Airbus aircraft, especially the twin-engined A330, with which it shares the same modern technology, such as the cockpit, fly-by-wire architecture and systems. The A340 cabin can comfortably accommodate from 280 to 440 passengers depending on the model. Most A340s available in the market today are fitted with full Audio-Video-On-Demand (AVOD) IFE system in all classes, which is today’s standard. Moreover, when it comes to making the most of cargo revenue opportunities, the A340 can carry as much cargo as direct competitors if not more, with 18 to 25 tonnes of revenue earning cargo capacity.

The bottom lineSo, has the A340 performed as intended by its designers? The answer is definitely ‘yes’ because today’s A340 is a mature product delivering high reliability. With its very competitive ownership costs, its passenger and cargo revenues, its availability and its comfortable cabin, the A340 can be considered an efficient long-haul solution in today’s market.

JetBlue places order for 15 A321ceo and 20 A321neo aircraft

JetBlue Airways placed a new order for 15 A321ceo (current engine option) and 20 A321neo (new engine option) aircraft. In addition, the airline has opted to upsize 8 A320ceo and 10 A320neo aircraft currently on backlog to 8 A321ceo and 10 A321neo, respectively. This order marks the 10,000th order for an Airbus A320 Family aircraft.

“With significant sav-ings from increased fuel efficiency and bet-ter utilization of our airport slot portfolio in key markets, we believe these A321 aircraft will improve our company’s profitability,” said Dave Barger, JetBlue presi-dent and CEO. The fleet changes will en-able JetBlue to add 15 incremental A321ceo aircraft to its fleet by 2017, while deferring 24 E190 aircraft. “With today’s announcement, we are reducing our capital commitments through the next three years, which is consistent with our free cash flow and return on invested capital goals,” said JetBlue chief financial officer Mark Powers.

JetBlue also expects to retrofit up to 110 Airbus A320s in its existing fleet with sharklets beginning in 2015. Sharklets are expected to reduce fuel consumption by up to 3%.

Boeing continues to improve 737 MAX performance

The Boeing 737 MAX program continues to make steady devel-opment progress since reaching Firm Configuration on the 737 MAX 8 in July. Engineers have completed an assessment of the airplane’s performance confirming an additional 1% fuel-efficiency improvement over the 13% already promised to customers. “Pro-gram and airplane performance just continues to improve,” said Keith Leverkuhn, vice president and general manager, 737 MAX program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We have been very dis-ciplined in our approach and continue to realize more benefit for our customers as we retire risk on the program and get fur-ther into development.” Air-lines that will operate the 737 MAX now will realize a 14% fuel-efficiency improvement over today’s most fuel efficient single-aisle airplanes. At longer ranges, the improvement will be even greater.

Airbus launches Sharklet retrofit for in-service A320 Family aircraft

Airbus launched the Sharklet retrofit programme for in-service A320 Family aircraft, available in 2015. Operators of older in-service A320 Family aircraft will thus be able to benefit from the sig-nificant cost savings and performance improve-ments which the Sharklets are already delivering on new-build aircraft. This retrofit includes rein-forcing the wing structure and adding the Shar-klet wingtip device. The retrofit will lengthen the aircraft’s service life and thus maximise the op-erators’ ROI for the Sharklet retrofit. Operators of Sharklet retrofitted aircraft will benefit from a reduction in fuel costs by up to four per cent and increased mission range by up to 100 nautical miles. Over 4,000 A320 Family in-service aircraft are eligible to be retrofitted with Sharklets; Airbus has already secured commitments from airlines for around 200 shipsets. Airbus will offer the ret-rofit initially for A320 and A319 models and will evaluate a retrofit for the A321 at a later stage.

At the heart of these investments is the World-Class Cen-tre of Excellence for Intelligent Manufacturing, an $80m initiative. The Centre of Excellence will come to frui-tion with the development and implementation of three new intelligent production lines featuring cutting-edge equipment and technology. The production lines will be dedicated to manufacturing highly complex key compo-nents for the new-generation family of PurePower engines recently launched by Pratt & Whitney. The introduction of the three intelligent produc-tion lines will require extensive upgrading of P&WC’s Longueuil plant, which is set to begin in the next few months, with the objective of being fully operational in 2015. Sikorsky completes initial tests of first rotor blades for CH-53K helicopter

Sikorsky Aircraft successfully completed the initial phase of testing for the first-ever main and tail rotor blades manufactured for the U.S. Marine Corps’ CH-53K heavy lift helicopter program. Designed specially to help meet the Marine Corps requirement to lift the aircraft’s maximum gross weight of 88,000 pounds, the all-composite blades are the largest and most technologically advanced ever produced by Sikorsky. At 35 feet span length, and almost three feet chord width, the CH-53K main rotor blade has 12% more surface area than the CH-53E blade. A 4th generation aerodynamic design devel-oped by Sikorsky adds unique airfoils, twist and taper to the new blade so as to accom-

modate 71% greater power generated by the CH-53K aircraft’s three 7,500-shaft-horsepower GE38-1B engines.
