Overview

Overview • Flag carrier airline of the United Arab Emirates; fourth biggest airline in

the Middle East and second biggest airline in the UAE after the Dubai-headquartered airline Emirates.

• Founded by a noble announcement in 2003 and headquartered in Abu Dhabi; started operations in November 2003.

• The name Etihad originates from the Arabic word for “union” (0حاد -al اإلّتittiḥād).

• Operates over 1,000 flights every week to ninety-six passenger and cargo destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Americas, with an aircraft fleet of 85 Airbus and Boeing aircraft.

• Carried 10.3 million passengers in 2012 (a 23% increase from 2011) and transported proceeds of US $4.8 billion and a net income of US $42 million.

• Apart from its central activity of transporting passengers, it also operates Etihad Holidays and Etihad Cargo.

• Headquartered at Abu Dubai International Airport, with its main office in Khalifa City A, Abu Dhabi.

• Reported its first full-year net revenue of US $14 million in 2011, in time for the considered plan announced by CEO James Hogan in 2006.

Head office • Etihad has its main office in Khalifa City A, Abu Dhabi, near Abu

Dhabi International Airport.

• Etihad spent 183.6 million UAE dirhams ($50 million USD) in 2007 to permit the construction of its new main office and training center; the new main office was scheduled to be completed by late 2007.

Structure • Etihad is ruled by a board of directors led by HH Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, whereas HH Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nahyan is

the vice chairman; together, they run the airline company with respect to its founding legislation and the Article of Association of the Company.

• The Board is made up of seven independent non-executive members with two sub-commissions: an Executive Commission and an Audit Commission, both with its own charter and chairman.

• Among the other members of the board are Mohammed Mubarak Fadel Al Mazrouei, Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh, Mubarak Hamad Al Muhairi, Hamad Abdullah Al Shamsi, Khalifa Sultan Al Suwaidi, and George Cheaib.

• The airline is led by James Hogan (previously the CEO of Gulf Air), who was appointed President and CEO on 10 September 2006.

Awards and recognitions • Since it began operations in 2003, Etihad Airways has won more than thirty awards.

• In 2009, it won the World Travel Awards (WTA) title for having the best Business Class in the world.

• It also won the “World’s Leading Airline” award at the World Travel Awards in London in November 2009 and the “World’s Leading Airline – First Class 2013” World Travel Awards in November 2013.

• It won the “World’s Best First Class” award by Skytrax at Hamburg in 2010; it won awards for "Best First Class catering" and "Best First Class Seat" as well. 

• In 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012, the World Travel Awards awarded Etihad the World’s Leading Airline.

• It won all three rewards in the First Class Category at the 2013 Skytrax World Airline Awards – "Best First Class", "Best First Class Seats" and, "Best First Class Catering” in 2013.

Cargo

Cargo • Etihad Cargo operates three Boeing B777F, two Boeing 747-400F

(Martinair Cargo operates one and Atlas Air operates the other), one Boeing 747-8F (operated by Atlas Air in Etihad Colors), and three Airbus A330-200F.

• Etihad Cargo additionally has one Airbus A330-200F freighter scheduled to go into operation in 2014.

• In 2012, Etihad Cargo transported 368,000 tonnes of cargo, a tonnage expansion of 19 percent on the back of a capacity growth of 14 percent in available tonnage kilometers.

• Etihad’s new facility at Abu Dubai International Airport will be built to handle over 500,000 tones yearly.

• In June 2012, Etihad Cargo revived its brand image by removing the “Crystal” part, with the whole “Etihad Cargo” name now written in billboard style.

Destinations

Destinations • As of September 2013, Etihad serves ninety-six passenger and cargo

destinations across Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and Australasia via its hub at Abu Dhabi International Airport.

• Together with Air France, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, Korean Air, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, and United Airlines, Etihad Airways is one of the few airlines to operate flights to all six populated continents.
