NEW BUSES OR NOT?

After seeing the AP Board meeting on TV, I couldn’t helpcommenting. Since when is it cheaper to send mechanicalwork out (EGR’s), then to buy the tool and have it for allneeded vehicles? Now we are farming out body work, maybebecause of paint issues, but remember how many of theemployees were fitted for masks for painting. If this is theproblem, do all the body panels, stringers and wheel wells inhouse and send the painting to the two local body shops. Twoyears ago, I went to an Open House at the garage; a pastSuperintendent asked if there was anything they could do tosave the buses. A mechanic answered by saying, “yes weused to scrape them down and re-undercoat them, but wedon’t bother anymore”. Most of all of the present boardmembers and administrators were there and heard what wassaid. It seems like garage work has become a thing of the past.Maybe we ought to “farm out” everything, and taxpayerswon’t have to vote on new buses, pay salaries and benefitsto those who don’t want to be bothered anymore. Now thatso many people are scraping together what they have to

keep surviving, it’s an insult to ask us to open our pockets for

more. ~ Bill Cushing, Sand Lake Paid Advertisement“HOLIDAY PORTRAITS WITH PETS”

WHAT NOBODY’S TALKING ABOUTLetter to the Editor: “Energy Independence” has been a safetopic for presidential debate. Global warming has not. Andyet, even the mainstream evening news now reports as factthat “climate change”, caused primarily by the burning of fossilfuels, is at the source of record violence and extremes ofweather all over the world. Savings on the cost of disasterrelief and increased health care, brought on by theseextremes, could go a long way toward saving Medicare andSocial Security and reducing the deficit in the long term.Prioritizing the development of renewable energy could go alot further toward keeping us competitive in the world marketthan “getting tough” on China. China and other countries arealready moving ahead of us in this, the industry of the future. These countries do not seem to be as beclouded as we by thedoubt and denial propagandized by our big oil companies, similarly to the tobacco companies of a few decades ago.~ Barbara SmithEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity ofits contents.

WRECKING BALL FOR SCHODACK’S

OLD TOWN HALL?Letter to the Editor: I have attended about 90% of SchodackTown Board meetings for over 60 years and have never seen atime when there was not some local newspaper coverage whichkept the public informed but that is the present situation. Thetown has a website which for some unknown reason it is notused to inform the public on a regular basis what is going on inour town.At the regular meeting on October 25th, a resolution was passedto seek bids to tear down the old town hall giving only about 2weeks (November 13th) before bids would be opened. I amaware there are many who will be glad to rid the town of whatis called an eyesore, but at what price would you want tospend, and will it make the property saleable at a price whichwould compensate for the cost of this demolition? I have heardreports that the cost could be between $65,000 and $75,000to tear it down and restore the site to bare ground. The last Iheard was maybe someone would offer $250,000 for thesite as is. Does this mean once the site is back to bare ground, the town could get $325,000 for the land, or will the towndiscover any future offer will still be $250,000 or less? Theasking price has been a mystery lately, will the asking price beincreased by $75,000? With only about 2 weeks to bid, doesthe town have a contractor all ready to bid? I also wonder ifthere is a buyer waiting in the wings to pick up this property fora low ball price? Remember, when we were told that corner lotwould sell for one million, two hundred and fifty thousand?I told the town board, “They are again spending money we donot have and they should not burden taxpayers with moreexpense. Not much is selling with this economy. We shouldwait for better times when a more realistic price can beachieved.” ~ Ray Lemka, Schodack resident

purrfect kittyof the month

My name is Mikki & I’m a beautiful 3.5-year-old, long-haired gray catwith white tuxedo markings and an unusually soft, downy coat. Youmay have seen me in this space over a year ago as I still have notbeen adopted. :( I’m considered a special-needs kitty, as I’m veryshy and need a special person to work with me so I can blossom &live a full life with someone. I came to the rescue group as a kittenfrom a feral mom cat and now all of my siblings have been adopted.Although I’m a shy cat at first, once I warm up to you, I love to bepetted and to run and play! Toys and treats would go far in gaining my trust. I’m great with othercats and would love to be in a home with at least one other kitty. Since I’m timid at first, I’d dobest in a home with older or very respectful children or adults only. I would so love to have achance at a “forever home” with a good person or family. Can you be the special person for me,a special kitty? I’ve waited for so long!Like all Purrfect Companion kitties, Mikki is up-to-date on routine shots, house trained andspayed. For more information on Mikki, please contact Maryann at 331-2221 or [email protected]. Purrfect Companions is a non-profit, all volunteer

rescue organization. We arealways looking for goodvolunteers to help with thekitties or assist at our adoptionclinics. If you’d like to donatea little time to these worthyanimals, please give us a callat 463-8709. Our adoptionclinics are held 12:30-4:00most Saturdays and Sundaysat Petco, Northway Mall,Albany NY. While most AP athletes are sweating it out in winter sporttryouts this week, the few remaining AP fall sport teamscompeted in their Sectionals. The Boy’s Soccer team was still going strong this week. TheWarriors took on South Glens Falls in the Sectional Semi-Finalsat Johnstown High School. AP came out hungry for the win. Inthe first and second half, Averill Park held their opponent, 0-0.The boys traveled into overtime and it looked as if it wouldcome down to penalty kicks, but then, devastatingly, in thelast 45 seconds, South Glens Falls scored. It was an unfortunateending to such a hard-fought game. Congratulations to theboys for doing so well throughout both the regular and postseasons. The Cross Country team also continues to make strides. TheBoys and Girls teams started Sectionals this week. On theboy’s side, there was no surprise that one of our own placed.Andrew Tario took 3rd out of 161 participants, with a time of15:33.14 and an average mile time of 5:07.1. Amazing job!Andrew will move on to the State competition. Other APWarriors that competed in Class B Sectionals were Chris Shaw, who came in 19th, Josh Foust, who crossed the line 30th, MattMiller, who came in 45th, Jeremy Carter (54th), Sean Harrington(76th), Lukas Morgan (78th), Justin Garzione (87th), BenjiQuinones (88th), and Chris Hough-Deane (116th).Congratulations to all involved. On the Girl’s side, congratulations to the AP sectionalparticipants: Brittany Mack (48th), Juliana Kolakowski (64th),Allyson Holland (86th), Olivia Marrochello (95th), Morgan Rush(113th), Sammi Miller (120th), and Lizzie Howard (133rd).The winter sports are starting up now. “Senior Averill Park Keeper Brandan Westfall makes a savefrom AP’s third Sectional game. The Warriors lost the matchto So. Glens Falls High at Johnstown HS last Thursday 1-0.”

This week’s ScholarAthlete of the Week justbegan running crosscountry this year, yet hasalready made quite theimpression. When I askedCoach Glunk who shethought would make anexcellent candidate, sheimmediately recom-mended Morgan Rush, asenior at Averill Park HighSchool. Morgan definesthe tit le of a scholarathlete. She beganrunning cross country thisyear, because shethought it would be a fun,

new way to meet people and stay in shape. At meets, whichRush admits can be pretty nerve-racking, she usually runs a5K, which is 3.1 miles. She loves being with the team, becauseit led her to meet lots of new people that she never would havehad she never joined the team. Morgan spent many hoursworking hard at practice over the summer, all in preparation forthe upcoming season. While being involved in cross country, Rush is also anoutstanding student. For the past three years, she hasmaintained a steady 95 overall GPA. This year she is taking ChicLit (Women’s Literature), physics, calculus, philosophy, windensemble, economics and participation in government. In thefuture, Morgan plans on majoring in occupational therapy;possibly at Russell Sage College or Utica College. Rush believesthat being a scholar athlete means you have the ability tobalance your school work, involvement in athletics and the manyother aspects of your life. She would like to thank her parentsand sister for all of her success. “They’ve really helped me toget where I am today,” says Morgan. Her family has inspiredher in so many ways and helped shape who she is. While theseason has come to a wrap, we wish you the best of luck,Morgan, in your last year here at APHS!

SCHODACK’S TOWN CENTER:

THE LINKAGE STUDY

Letter to the Editor: On October 25th, the Schodack Planningand Development Association highlighted our Position Paperand stated there would be a series of articles to follow. This isthe first follow-up article on the Town Center Linkage Study. The Scope of the Project- This Study, made possible by theCapital District Transportation Council, will build upon the Townof Schodack’s Comprehensive Plan and Route 9 CorridorDevelopment Plan. Both studies called for creating a publiclysupported town center plan. The town center plan is envisionedto include a balance of commercial, residential, civic, cultural, and recreational uses with a well-designed transportationsystem that is safe and walkable. The Project is certainly a stepin the right direction for our Town. The Town Center Plancurrently defines the “town center” as 9/20 between MillerRoad and Exit 11. However, the Association believes it makessense to extend this area to just beyond Route 150, to alsoinclude the old Town Hall as well as the vacant land on the otherside of 9/20. There is land for sale at this very importantintersection which would be ideal for retail and servicedevelopment. This is in line with the findings of the 2006 CorridorStudy, which talked about the Town Center as a much broaderarea, going just beyond the split of 9 & 20, and encouragingretail and service industries in this section.Design Standards - The current Town Center Study and the2006 Corridor Study both mention the need for design standardsto be developed for the subject area. The Association is excitedabout a renewed interest in these standards, since a “CommercialDesign Guidelines Manual”, previously developed by the town, could easily be pulled off the shelf and used today.Public Participation - The other positive aspect of this Studyis the public participation.Key stakeholder and public meetings are scheduled forNov. 13 and 14th at Town Hall. We would encourage allwho can attend to please be there. Additional details areavailable on the Town’s website. Our next article will be focused around the Comprehensive Plan.~Tony Kirby, Director, Office of Real Property Management Thruway

AVERILL PARK CSD LOOKING FOR LONG

RANGE PLANNING COMMITTEE MEMBERS

Dear Community Members: The best solutions to local schoolchallenges always come from cooperation, commitment andcompromise among those closest to the issues. This is why theAverill Park Board of Education is seeking input from its community–parents, students, educators, taxpayers and community leadersalike – to develop a long range plan entitled, Averill Park 2020(AP2020). In October 2012, the Board initiated a planning processdesigned to assemble a broad-based coalition willing to help thedistrict develop a future plan of action. As you know, our schoolcommunity has faced considerable financial pressures in recentyears. Residents, from those wanting to preserve programs to thosewanting to limit tax increases, have addressed the Board in variousforums and meetings. Looking ahead to the future, these challengesremain, but the Board is looking to engage the community and todevelop shared goals and understanding. The AP2020 group –which will meet four times in December and January – will developa blueprint that includes a new mission statement, strategicobjectives, action plans and the measurement tools needed to chartprogress. Participation in this committee will involve making acommitment to attend all four planning meetings. These include:• December 12 - 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., High School Media Center• January 14 and 15 – 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (location TBD)• January 30 - 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., High School Media CenterIf you would like to be considered as a member the planningprocess, please complete the nomination form which you can findon the District website (www.averillpark.k12.ny.us), in all Districtbuildings, and other local places (Libraries, Town Hall, etc) byNovember 20. You may also nominate someone else for this role. Please send completed forms to Jacqueline Geraci [email protected] or Averill Park CSD, 146 Gettle Rd,St.1, Averill Park, NY 12018. Completed forms may also be returnedto any school building.Ultimately, the Board’s goal is to ensure the best education for ourchildren in a safe and supportive environment that promotesachievement and engagement – and to achieve this in context ofwhat’s happening locally and statewide with our economy. This iswhy we must look ahead and involve area residents in developingsolutions. Please consider this invitation to apply. I also invite you to followour progress as we begin our work in the coming weeks.Thank you.~ Sincerely, Dr. James Hoffman - Superintendent of Schools

Everyone learns how to cut, paste and color in the lines at ayoung age, but for Adam Heisig that was just the beginning.Adam Heisig, a senior here at Averill Park, has been creatingart pieces for as long as he can remember. As he has grown, hisart has grown as well. Adam says that, “Art is an expression ofwho I am, what I like…I create things I would like other peopleto see. That’s what inspires me.” He seems to always be workingon a new and exciting piece. Adam loves photography andplans on continuing that in college while also doing advertising.Along with photography, he also uses physical media to expresshis art. “I like to use different subjects in my photography, manipulate them to create something different, and explorethe use of light in a photo”, says Adam. As busy as he is, Adamstill keeps his overall average at a 90, participates in boy scouts, and finds time to hangout with his friends on the weekends.Mrs. Gregory, one of Adam’s art teachers here at Averill Parksays that Adam “is very self-motivated with his art, and displaysa satisfaction beyond that of his peers with the developmentof his conceptual ideas. He’s a very eager learner and is veryinterested in all media.” Adam was also voted best artist in thesenior class this year. He has a lot going for him and he is sureto achieve it all. Adam thanks his parents for everything theyhave done to help him get to where he is today. Adam, I wishyou the best, and good luck with everything!

When Congress Ruled Alone I saw a poll the other day that said only 12% of Americans viewed Congressfavorably. I thought about that. How would they feel if Congress were the onlyform of government we had. And then, I remembered, we did! The SecondContinental Congress convened on May 10, 1775, a month after theRevolutionary War broke out on Lexington Green in April. It ceased to existwhen the Articles of Confederation were ratified. Although it had no explicit legal authority to govern, it assumed all thefunctions of a national government. The Congress was to take charge of the colonial war effort, andit adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. By raising armies, founding a Navy, creating the Marine Corps, directing strategy, appointing diplomats and generals, stabilizing thecurrency and making formal treaties, the Congress acted as the de facto national government forsix years. The Congress authorized the seizure arsenals, the driving out of royal officials and in1775, oversaw the successful siege of the British army in the city of Boston. On June 14, 1775, theCongress voted to create the Continental Army out of the militia units around Boston and quicklyappointed Congressman George Washington of Virginia as commanding general. It sent Silas Deaneand Benjamin Franklin to France and John Jay to Spain as Congressional ministers. It re-openedAmerican ports in defiance of the British Navigation Acts. The Congress had no authority to levy taxes and was required to request money, supplies, andtroops from the states to support the war effort. Individual states frequently ignored these requests. The source of Congressional power lay solely in the acquiescence of the people or the persuasivepowers of the delegates to convince their home governments to contribute to the cause. It continuedto function in York, Pennsylvania, when the British captured Philadelphia in 1777-8 when it hiredFriedrich Wilhelm August Heinrich Ferdinand Baron von Steuben to turn our rag-tag militia into anorganized and trained army. In 1777, Congress passed and sent to the states for ratification theArticles of Confederation. Finally, on March 1, 1781, the Articles of Confederation were ratified. Onthe next day, the same congressional delegates met as the new Congress of the Confederation. Perhaps the reason for the success of the Second Continental Congress was that no one in thehistory of the world had ever seen a truly representative body. Remember, the British Parliamentwas selective in allotting its membership--Liverpool and Manchester had no representation. However, adulation was not universal. John Adams said, “One useless man is a disgrace: Two is a law firm:Three or more is a Congress!”

BETWEEN

GOD AND USOn Sunday, November 11,2012, the Stuyvesant andNassau Reformed Churcheswill focus on a letter to theChristian Hebrews who mayhave been considering areturn to Judaism, perhapsbecause of their lack ofunderstanding the Biblicaltruths of which they had beeninformed.
