RED LIONS INDIE ROCK GROUP
IN CONCERT AT SLCA
The Red Lions performed during 2006-2010 in the capital regionas a group featuring singer/songwriter Eric Margan and a diverseensemble of musicians. They’ve evolved in a number of ways, both in line-up and musical style. With the addition of singer/songwriter Caroline Corrigan, the band has begun to sing 3and 4-part vocal harmonies and exchange roles of lead vocalist.Multi-instrumentalist Rick Spataro has gravitated toward playingthe drums and Jonnie Baker has joined the band as lead guitarist.Scott Kellerhouse lives in Ithaca but lends his talents onkeyboards, guitar and bass on occasion. The new sound is lessorchestral and more rock ‘n’roll- but equally as melodious andsweet. They’re having a lot of fun playing music so come hearthem play their versions of familiar songs, as well as the greatoriginals from their CD’s Midnight Book and Human Rhythms onFri., Sept. 9 at 7:30pm and tickets are $12 adults and $8 under18. “DEMOCRAT” IS REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE
Letter to the Editor: As we approach another election in NorthGreenbush, a candidate for Supervisor is talking about being“bi-partisan” while asking Democrats to support him in a partyprimary. Trouble is nowhere in his announcement did he tellvoters he is the REPUBLICAN candidate for Supervisor andthat if he takes the Democratic nomination away from hisDemocratic Party endorsed opponent, he will leave voters nochoice in the November election. It’s hard to imagine that a true Democrat would be running asa Republican and then neglect to tell Democratic voters he’sthe Republican nominee! Yet, Al Spain did just that in his letterlast week. He also glossed over his record as a member of theRepublican majority on the town board, working against theDemocratic Supervisor on so many issues, including the no bidcontract that cost taxpayers $30,000 to redo theComprehensive Plan to his liking. He also failed to mention the$35,000 State Grant he and his majority refuse to take, becausethey don’t like the folks who worked to get the grant. This candidate supported a budget that took thousands ofdollars from Highway Dept PILOT funds and used it to restoreGeneral Fund cuts in the Supervisor’s budget. After an errorcaused the salary of Highway Superintendent Premo to bereduced, he played games with the man’s salary until publicpressure caused his majority to correct the mistake. Heappointed two politically connected non residents as townlawyers and ignored two qualified town residents seeking thejobs. He also voted to fire the Comptroller and Youth Directorfor political purposes and maneuvered his brother into a paidspot on the Planning Board. So, Democrats have a choice between the GOP candidate forSupervisor and the Democratic candidate. If the GOP wins theDemocratic line in this primary, Mr. Spain will be opposing himselfin November, leaving voters without a choice.~Robert Price, WynantskillEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for allintents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of itscontents.

RESPONSE TO LIBERAL NONSENSE
Letter to the Editor: I am insulted that Mr. Crawmer suggeststhat most liberals don’t pay taxes. Disagreements are a goodpart of our democracy. Accusing any religion, ethnic group, orpolitical leaning of being corrupt promotes hate with no factsor justification. Any disagreement that relies on unverifiableaccusations toward someone with opposing views is becomingthe norm in America and I find it repulsive. My letter was titled “Cutting Taxes Does Not Create Jobs”. Isaid that demand for a product or services created jobs andtaxes used to improve transportation, education and create asafe and legal environment improve a business ability to satisfythat demand.Living in a democracy I accept the fact that not all tax moneyis spent as I would like. I totally agree with secretary of defenseRobert Gates that the defense budget could be cut. As hestated we spend more on our navy than the next 13 countriescombined and 11 of those 13 are our allies. However if themajority wants to spend this amount we need to fund thespending with tax money. Our tax cuts for many years have been coupled with unfundedspending increases. If there is no funding from income taxes aprogressive tax system where those with an ability to pay gettaxed then regressive taxes like property or sales taxes andvarious fees are needed. No Child left behind is a good exampleof unfunded spending that raised school taxes. Who was theliberal that created that? In my letter I said my argumentsmake a case supporting a progressive tax system because ofthe benefits the wealthy receive.~John Sniezyk, Averill ParkEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of

FULLY INFORMED JURY ASSOC.DEDICATED TO EDUCATING AMERICAN CITIZENSLetter to the Editor: September 5th is Jury Rights Day.Americans have the right to jury nullification of bad law becauseof the determination of a man of conscience. On September5th, 1670 Quaker William Penn of London was arrested, plednot guilty, and subsequently argued against EnglandsConventicle Acts, which outlawed the practice of religions otherthan the Church of England. The Judge instructed Jurors of the case to find Penn guilty. The Jurors’ refusal to enforce what they considered bad lawled to the Court jailing and withholding food and water fromthem. Some of those jurors appealed their fines and imprisonment, and a higher court confirmed the right of the Jurors to basetheir verdict on their best judgment and conscience. Eventhough there was a law against freedom of religion, the highcourt held that juries could not be required to enforce any lawthey thought was wrong. This ruling established protection for the jury, including thatthey are not required to give a reason for the verdict theyrender, and firmly established the right of jurors to refuse toaccept bad government laws. This refusal of bad law is calledjury nullification. Through jury nullification, people can controltheir government by refusing to allow bad laws to be enforced.William Penn later came to Colonial America and foundedPennsylvania. Penns trial, along with the 1735 trial in New Yorkof publisher John Peter Zenger for publishing unlawful criticismof the royal governor of New York colony, helped establish ourlegal traditions of freedom of religion and speech. In bothcases, rebellious, conscientious jurors voted for acquittalagainst the law and the instructions of the judge.Jurors in America today still have the authority to nullify badlaws. This authority is our peaceful protection to stop corruptgovernment servants from violating our rights. Most Judges today do not inform their juries of their right tonullify laws with their verdict. There is an organization calledthe Fully Informed Jury Association (www.fija.org) which isdedicated to educating American citizens of this little knownfreedom. ~Robert E. TIMING NOT RIGHT FOR NEW
WSL FIRE STATIONLetter to the Editor: I’m glad that the West Sand Lake FireStation proposal to build a five million dollar fire station wasnot passed. Not that I do not support the fire stations, I do,but the fire station in West Sand Lake already, has nothingwrong with it. I understand that there were problems with itbeing too small and older than some of the others in the area.Honestly, though, thirty-five years old is not that old. Most ofthe houses in the district are around sixty and some evenolder than that. It would be nice to build a new fire station, but right now is not the time, and it’s nice to see that people inthe area know that even if they want a new fire station. Weall know the money is just not there to fund it, especially whenour schools have had to make cuts in classes and courses. Idon’t think it’s right if we can’t afford to pay for education, butwe can spend all our money on a five million dollar fire station? If we can’t raise our taxes a little to help out children’seducation, than we can’t raise our taxes to pay for a brandnew fire station. So I’m glad to see that it didn’t pass, but inthe future when the money is more available it would be niceto see a new fire station being built in West Sand Lake.~Nicolette Rudolph, APHS 11th Grade English StudentEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of

Greetings and best wishes to everyone in the City of Rensselaer. As Rensselaer’s representative to the County Legislature, I amhappy to report to you on the actions taken by the RensselaerCounty Legislature at our August 9, 2011 meeting.Along with detailing issues considered at the legislative meeting,I have received numerous calls regarding the proposed asphaltplant at the Port of Rensselaer. Residents are concerned abouttraffic and environmental impacts, particularly in the Fort Crailo, lower Broadway and South Street areas. Residents are alsoconcerned their feelings regarding the plant have not beenadequately addressed. I have written to the city planningdirector requesting the scheduling of an additional publiccomment session on the proposed plant to ensure all concernsare heard. In my letter to the city planning director, I askedthat the developers of the proposed asphalt plant deal withthe concerns of the residents living in the neighborhoods nearthe site of the project. In particular, concerns about potentialincreases of traffic in nearby neighborhoods due to the closureof a bridge near State Route 9J should be addressed. The Legislature has been working hard to reduce expenses.Recently, a bid of the county insurance policy netted a savingsof $900,000 over three years. Spending has also been reducedin legislative offices. Following a bi-partisan review by countylawmakers, the purchase of electronic tablets, specifically iPads, was approved to reduce the costs of paper, printing, copying, staff time and related expenses. It is expected the new measurewill save $40,000 over the next three years and more in theyears to follow. I joined my colleagues in requesting repeal ofa state law adopted in 2010 that requires widows or widowersseeking to sell or transfer a boat, trailer, all-terrain vehicle orsnowmobile to seek approval from a surrogate or probate court.Previously, such transactions could be conveniently handled ina local DMV office.Normally, regular monthly meetings of the County Legislaturetake place on the second Tuesday, but Primary Day takes placeon the second Tuesday of September. To accommodate votersparticipating in the primary, the next meeting of the RensselaerCounty Legislature is Wednesday, September 14, 2011.Residents are welcome to contact me at our legislative officesby writing to the Rensselaer County Legislature, 1600 7thAvenue, Troy NY 12180 or by e-mailing us via the officiallegislative website at www.rensselaercounty.org.

LOCAL & NATIONWIDE EDUCATION CUTSLetter to the Editor: This year, I noticed controversy not justlocally, but all over the country centered on school budgeting. The government was making educational cuts nationwide, andit definitely had a strong effect on many people- I saw thiswhen I attended a couple of Averill Park’s budget meetings. Asalways, some of the first things to be considered for removalfrom the curriculum were the arts, language, and even a couplesports as well as many teachers’ jobs. These things are being rapidly cut from many schools aroundthe nation because the government politicians have been morefocused on overseas wars and getting re-elected than thequality of education in their own schools. Watching the news,I saw the government spending all their time arguing over thedebt ceiling and whether to raise it (which does seem to defeatthe point of having a debt ceiling at all), so they could fundwars and pay other countries what they owe, and meanwhilewe, the students, are stuck with a smaller budget.I think it is vital for students to get the best education theycan, and that includes the opportunity to be schooled in thearts. If we do not get the chance to study these things now,how are we supposed to carry on as the next generation ofadults in the world?~Glenn Carreau, 11th Grade APHS English StudentEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity ofits contents.
LABOR DAYLetter to the Editor: LaborDay; a day many American’scelebrate with parties, picnics, and parades. LaborDay marks the end of thesummer and the start of anew school year for many.Observed on the first Mondayof September, Labor Day is aday to remember andacknowledge the contri-butions the labor force hashad on the success andprosperity of our nation. Theholiday was created duringthe labor movement in thelate 19th century but wasn’testablished as a federalholiday until 1894. The firstLabor Day was celebrated onTuesday, September 5th 1882in New York City with a grandparade when approximately10,000 workers took anunpaid holiday to march in thevery first Labor Day parade. So this September 5th let usremember to celebrate theworkman’s holiday with thesame pride and joy that manydid almost 130 years ago.~Ashleigh Beer, APHS 11thGrade English StudentEditors Note: The above articledoes not necessarily reflect theopinion or endorsement of theEditor or the Staff of THEADVERTISER, and for all intentsand purposes is impossible toverify the truth and veracity of itscontents.

CHANGE THE TEEN DRIVING AGELetter to the Editor: Sixteen, an exciting milestone that meansfreedom, finally! The rules about getting your driver’s licenseare different in each state. In Texas, residents are allowed toget their permit when they turn fifteen, but they have to holdtheir permit until they are at least sixteen. In New York, residentshave to wait until they are sixteen just to get their permit. Then they are required to hold it for at least six months untilthey can take their first crack at the driver’s test. I don’t believethis is fair, not to mention extremely inconvenient. It’s hard forour parents to drive us all over the place, as if they don’t haveenough to do already. As we grow older, we have moreresponsibilities, and we are in need of transportation morefrequently. It is necessary for kids to save up for college whilethey are still in high school, and if we have our license at ayounger age, then we can get to and from a job. If we don’thave a driver’s license, then having a job as a teenager isalmost impossible. If you have your driver’s license at a youngerage, you can help your parents run errands and shuttle yoursiblings around. The main problem that people have withteenagers having their license is that teenagers are sometimescareless drivers. However, what people don’t think about isadults are also careless at times... we see adults on their phonesall the time. Sure there are some risks of having teens on theroad, but there are some adults out there who are even morereckless than teenagers. There is now talk about a new lawrequiring sixteen year olds to hold their permit until they areseventeen. I say that we change the law so you can get yourpermit at fifteen and your license at sixteen. That way teenagersstill have one year of driving experience with a permit, but theyhave the benefits of a license at a younger age.~Christy Dunn, APHS 11th Grade English StudentEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for allintents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of itscontents.

As legislative representatives of District 4, including the townsof Schodack, Nassau and Sand Lake, we are happy to provideresidents with an update on actions taken at the August 9,2011 legislative meeting. With increased budget pressures due to the ongoing recessionand increases in state mandates, the Legislature has placed anincreased emphasis on cost-cutting measures. Recently, ourcomprehensive re-bid of the county insurance policy generateda savings of $900,000 over three years, bringing countyinsurances costs lower than in the early 1990s.We have also reduced legislative budgets and rejectednumerous requests for spending for new equipment and servicesin recent years. To enhance these efforts at cost-cutting, weinstituted a bi-partisan effort to explore new ways to reducespending. After several months of consideration by legislators from bothsides, we approved a new cost-cutting measure. The newmeasure involves utilizing electronic tablets, specifically iPads,to replace the voluminous amounts of paper generated inlegislative offices, along with mail, printing and copying. We expect the move will generate a savings of at least $40,000over the next three years. The savings increase when stafftime is factored in.Legislators also joined County Clerk Frank Merola in requestingrepeal of a state law adopted in 2010 that requires widows orwidowers seeking to sell or transfer a boat, trailer, all-terrainvehicle or snowmobile to seek approval from a surrogate orprobate court. Previously, such transactions could beconveniently handled in a local DMV office.County lawmakers also joined in recognizing members of theDistrict Attorney’s office and Troy Police Department for theirrole in the successful prosecution of Michael Mosley, who hadbeen charged with a double homicide that occurred in 2002.We also recognized members of the county ProbationDepartment, including probation officers Colleen Burns and KellyMiazga, who helped determine the need for DNA samples thatled to Mosley’s conviction.Normally, the regular monthly meetings of the CountyLegislature take place on the second Tuesday, but Primary Daytakes place on the second Tuesday of September. Toaccommodate voters participating in the primary, the next
meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature is Wednesday,September 14, 2011. LOCAL LIBRARIES NEED OUR SUPPORT
Letter to the Editor: With the tough economic times that we areexperiencing, it is important to cut back on our personal spendingas well as our government spending. However, that does notmean cutting funding for our local libraries. When we cut fundingthrough tax cuts we end up doing more damage than good. The most important thing about a library is that it’s open toeveryone. There are no fees or memberships, which keeps itavailable for lower class Americans struggling to make endsmeet. One of the resources provided are computers. Acomputer is essential in the search for a job when unemploymentis so high. In many cases employers require that applicationsbe submitted via the internet. However without access to acomputer, this is impossible. Schools also require students tohave computer access to complete assignments online. In manycases the school computers are not available, forcing studentsto find another means of completing their homework. Even Ihave used a library computer to do homework when mine wasbroken.Libraries provide access to the greatest learning tool a personcan have; books. They have books for all ages, in all sizes, andgenres. Books are essential to learning and education, helpingchildren to become the future of tomorrow. Anything can befound in the pages of a book, as long as we have access tothem.Lastly, Libraries provide free forms of entertainment including,DVDs, CDs, community events, and classes. All of these thingsare positive on the community and provide a safe place tospend time, especially for teens. For a family cutting corners, the savings of a l ibrary can make all the difference. It is important to support your local library because for eachinvestment we make, we get more out of it than we invested.~Lydia Sharp, Poestenkill - APHS 11th Grade English StudentEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for allintents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of itscontents.

THE JOY OF PAYING TAXES!Letter to the Editor: Response to Mr. Crawmer’s letter 8/11/11. It appears Mr. Crawmer is too smart for all you Liberal SelfServing state workers. You’ve had your hand in our wallets fortoo long now. You all make me sick, especially the State Police, aren’t you supposed to “Protect & Serve”, it’s not for you toself serve to the things the rest of us pay for, roads, government, ...police! How did you all work this out any way?Is there some sort of Quid Pro Quo if you’re hired into thisclub? Health care isn’t it, Civil Service exam shams to weed outanybody but fellow Liberals. It’s almost as if you have anorganization set up to recruit new members, probably disguisedas Democratic Campaign Committee offices. You may as wellall quit your “jobs” and start working for a living and startpaying some taxes. You know, once you start really working, you too might feel the joy of actually paying taxes. Now letstry to do something about Welfare (not kidding, a failed socialprogram that is a drain on tax revenues and society). But it’snot like they’re going to go out and get a job, let alone paytaxes, ... child credits, earned income tax credit, let everybodyelse pay for my credit. ~Jeff Dorr, East GreenbushEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity ofits contents.

As legislative representatives of District 2, including the townsof East Greenbush, North Greenbush and Poestenkill, we arehappy to provide our constituents with a report on actionstaken at the August 9, 2011 legislative meeting. We joined with County Clerk Frank Merola in asking for a changein a state law that has been inconveniencing widows andwidowers. Prior to 2010, widows and widowers could sell ortransfer a variety of vehicles, including boats, trailers, ATVsand snowmobiles registered in the name of their spouse.Unfortunately, the new state law requires for a widow orwidower to seek approval in either surrogate or probate court. This causes inconvenience to a surviving spouse and addsexpenses to an already crowded court system.County Clerk Merola reports he has received a number ofcomplaints regarding the new state law. We agree with CountyClerk Merola that the best solution is to repeal the 2010 statelaw and go back to the original standards. Our resolution will besent to state officials for consideration. The Legislature has worked in recent years to reduce spendingwherever possible. We have reduced spending in legislativeoffices and our re-bid of the county insurance policy will resultin a savings of $900,000 over three years. We continued thoseefforts, agreeing to use electronic tablets, specifically iPads, for use to reduce the amount of paper, printing, copying andpostage in legislative offices. The change follows othermunicipalities who have made a similar switch and is expectedto generate a savings of $40,000 over the next three years.Following reports about more safety concerns on an area bridge,we asked the state to review safety conditions on bridgescarrying motorists over the Hudson and Mohawk rivers intoRensselaer County. We were also pleased to appoint two District 2 residents, JeffTooker of East Greenbush and Lee Crosier of North Greenbush,to the Rensselaer County Emergency Radio CommunicationsCommittee.Normally, the regular monthly meetings of the CountyLegislature take place on the second Tuesday, but Primary Daytakes place on the second Tuesday of September. THE EQ OF LIBERALISMLetter to the Editor: There’s a big difference between being intelligent and being devious. Bothcan lead to tremendous success and indeed intelligence plays a large part in being successfullydevious. But being devious has no roll in being intelligent. When I hear that Liberals think Barack Obama is extremely intelligent, I think it’s time to providethem a little more perspective. Some twenty years ago, I found myself being told I was wrongby so many people so often that I was being consumed by self doubt. I was finding it difficult tomake business decisions involving investment risks. I had a friend who, when disagreeing withme about politics back then, asked if I ever considered the possibility that I could be wrong. Iwas shocked and said of course. I continually engaged in introspection, that internal debatethat we humans employ to form judgments. Didn’t he?In order to help me to decide if I should continue to find my own way or if I should simply submitto the status quo that I thought was wrong, I submitted myself to an IQ test at a MENSAmembership drive. The results gave me the confidence to invest in my own business and ignorethe voices of defeat around me. Those voices are still there and in fact have become amplified. Some time ago while listening to WGY radio in the morning, the host interviewed an author of abook that challenged the validity of intelligence. His book was about an Emotional Quotient, orEQ, that he thought was more important to human development. He used the tragic example ofBobby Fisher the chess genius, to bolster his flawed theory. People of all stripes are capable oflosing their minds so I found his book to be a waste of paper. But the real tragedy of promotingsuch a theory is that it empowers people to base life’s decisions on their emotions, withoutengaging in a moment of introspection. That, in my opinion, explains why we have so many Liberals in elected positions today. It is justso quick and easy to manipulate peoples’ emotions in order to win an election. But it’s no way torun a country. ~David Crawmer, www.republicamerica.usEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or theStaff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of itscontents.

RECYCLING: IT REALLY DOES
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Letter to the Editor: More often than not, we find ourselvesthrowing away water bottles, cereal boxes, food containersand the list goes on. Simply because there wasn’t a recycle bin,or we were just too lazy to find one. We do this thinking onemore bottle or can isn’t going to harm the environment. However, when everyone, everyday is throwing away “one more bottle”the piles in the landfills will begin to stack up. Roughly 50 billionplastic water bottles end up in U.S. landfills each year, that’s140 million everyday! In fact when you lay them end to end, it’senough to reach China. That’s only water bottles, imagine all ofthe other recyclable products that are thrown away each year. The numbers begin to skyrocket It’s time people begin to realizehow fragile our little planet is, and that with nearly 7 billionpeople on the planet, we can’t afford to be lazy. And when itcomes to recycling, the immediate thought is “hassle,” but thereare several ways that recycling can be made easy, it just takesa few habitual and attitude changes. One great way to start isto have a separate bin in the kitchen for recycling cans, bottles, papers and boxes. This makes it much easier to recycle, also itwill help you remember to recycle, since we often tend to forget.Secondly, be sure to sign up for your garbage company’srecycling program, this makes it easier than going to a recyclingcenter. It may possibly cost a little extra money, but if it does, just know it’s for a good cause: to help out the planet we liveon. Additionally, redeem your bottles and cans at the grocerystore, they’re worth 5 cents each, remember. Recycling is aminute, and virtually no cost way of providing aid to theenvironment. In doing so we can help reduce the staggeringamount of trash that ends up in landfills everyday. Besides, thousands of years from now, it’s not garbage that we wantfuture generations to find in between layers of rock. Now isthe time to take these steps in improving the environment, forthe generations of the future are depending on it.~Jessica Bowen, APHS 11th Grade English StudentEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for allintents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of itscontents.

AVERILL PARK BOOSTER CLUB IS
LOOKING FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
The Averill Park Booster Club is working hard to bring backathletic programs that were eliminated as part of the recentschool budget process. Many in our community have benefitedfrom these programs, or have children or grandchildren currentlyparticipating on high school sports teams, reaping the rewardsthat come from participation in athletics.Consider this (from the Averill Park Central District website):The athletic department saw the elimination of all freshmansports, indoor track and several assistant coaches. These sportsand assistant coaching positions can only be considered forreinstatement pending the availability of fund, to be raisedthrough community fundraising efforts. The Averill Park Central School District supports communityefforts to raise funds to reinstate any and all sports programsand coaching positions. Legally, for a sport or coaching positionto be reinstated, the entire cost of the program must bedonated to the school district prior to the start of the season. Please consider making a contribution to the Booster Club andhelp make a difference in the lives of our kids — help us to bringback our programs. Please send donations addressed to AverillPark Booster Club, PO Box 272, Averill Park, NY 12018.If you have questions or can help in some other way, pleasecontact the Booster Club at [email protected].

WHY WE SHOULD PROTECT LAND IN
RENSSELAER COUNTY
Letter to the Editor: We are lucky in Rensselaer County tohave acres of meadows and forests. If you have forgottenwhat a blessing open space is, take a trip to New York City andremind yourself how densely populated it is not that far awayfrom us.Thriving cities are great places to live, but they need a healthysurrounding countryside to provide fresh air, water, and food.Easy access to natural places is often cited as an importantquality in rankings of “livable” cities. The Associated Press recently reported that “animals acrossthe world are fleeing global warming by heading north muchfaster than they were less than a decade ago” (Times Union,August 19, 2011, p. A7). If human climate refugees followsuit, our downstate neighbors may soon put tremendousgrowth pressure on our still largely rural area. All residents ofour area will benefit if we have had the foresight to protectsignificant tracts of open space for recreation, agriculture, wildlife habitat, and the refreshing of air and water. You can learn how to help preserve the treasures we have inRensselaer County by contacting the Rensselaer Land Trust(renstrust.org, 659-5263), the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance(rensselaerplateau.org, 794-9160), or the AgriculturalStewardship Association (agstewardship.org, 692-7285).~Jennifer Hixon, East GreenbushEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity ofits contents.

RECKLESS DRIVING DECISIONS
CAN BE DEADLY
Letter to the Editor: Driving can be deadly when you makereckless decisions, and not only for the one making the mistakes.I am a new driver in Averill Park, and I’m noticing a lot of poordriving conduct while I’m learning how to drive. I usually followthe speed limit. As a result, I am constantly being tailgated byimpatient drivers. I understand that they’re in a hurry, but it’sextremely dangerous for everyone. It only takes one thing, like a child chasing a ball into the street, to cause an accident.I have witnessed many poor driving situations. For example, Ihave been passed on a road with double yellow lines near ablind turn. Had there been a car coming the other way, therewould have been a pretty bad accident. Luckily, no one wascoming and we all drove away fine. Driving unsafely like thatcan have severe consequences. It is getting harder and harder for teenagers to get their licenses. Many of us are decent drivers and we fail, often more thanonce. However, some of these reckless adults are still drivingon the streets putting many in danger.People around you can suffer the consequences of other’smistakes; suffer because they were at the wrong place at thewrong time. If everyone would drive safely, we wouldn’t haveto worry as much about making small mistakes while driving.~Kevin Curtin, Wynantskill - APHS 11th Grade English StudentEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for allintents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of itscontents.

GIRL SCOUT RECRUITMENT
Girl Scouts is a wonderful organization in our local community!Girl Scout troops meet to plan and carry out different activities. These activities can be based on badges, journeys (biggerprojects), service projects, or just for fun activities. Troopsusually meet once every 2 weeks and there are optionalneighborhood programs (ex. Ice skating, ice cream social), andcouncil programs (ex. camping and travel opportunities) thatgirls can participate in as well. The younger troops tend tofocus more on badge work, the middle school troops and highschool level troops tend to focus more on travel and funactivities. Also in our community, we have a teen troop (6th –12th grade) that is dedicated to hiking and only does tripsduring the year. Girl Scouts is for all girls kindergarten through12th grade. We are forming new kindergarten troops now sothat we will be ready by September. Our neighborhood supportsgirls attending Red Mill, Bell Top, Van Rensselaer, Goff MiddleSchool, and Columbia High School. If interested, please contactme at: [email protected].
