POSITION NEEDS YOUR SUPPORTLetter to the Editor: Dear Averill Park Community, As ourcommunity faces the budget challenges ahead, the opportunityarises to reflect on our crucially important school programs.As a parent of a 6th grader and an Averill Park teacher, I havewitnessed the direct positive impact of Ms. Teresa D’Arcangelis’swork as Student Assistance Counselor at AMS.Affectionately known as Ms. D., Teresa is an exceptionallyskilled counselor who is making a difference in our communityevery day. Teresa teaches sixth graders about substanceabuse, and most importantly, substance abuse prevention.As I was leaving the house to attend a party, my daughterinformed me of the “7 Ways to Say No at a Party”. She addedthat Ms. D. knows everyone’s name and makes the class“hilariously fun”.Learning about drug/alcohol prevention and the word “fun”are not usually in the same sentence. Ms. D. motivates ourchildren to make the right choices and to become positive rolemodels for their peers. Teresa visits classrooms andorchestrates skits in which students actually practice sayingno. She also organizes the club, “Walk the Talk,” wherestudents are encouraged to have fun without drugs and toengage in leadership opportunities. She counsels all AMSstudents and parents at their request. Students takeadvantage of her open door policy.If a drug-free community is important to you, please showyour support of this position to our school board. Eliminating orreducing Teresa’s position would be detrimental to our childrenand community. HOW GREEN IS YOUR LAWN/YOUR LAKE?Letter to the Editor: Just a thought about the upcoming springin relation to our environment, specifically our water.I’ve been hearing on the news lately about pollutants beingfound in our water. Apparently, it’s phosphates, hormones,vitamins, etc. I drink water from a well and frankly it scaresme. All these things we consume all come back to haunt us.I hear this. Then I see chemical lawn trucks come down mystreet and spray a rainbow of colored chemicals on adjacentlawns throughout the year. Green one week, yellow the next.What is this stuff? I think I know. Nitrates, herbicides,insecticides. Sounds more like suicide to me. Children andpets can’t play on the lawn for 24 hours. Tell me it’s not bad forus!I own a small camp on a local lake. It will be treated possibly 4times this year for algae blooms at a cost of thousands ofdollars and loss of clear lake water for recreation. Those nicegreen lawns, (which by the way have to be cut twice as often),given to you by lawn services, are a major contributing factorto this dilemma.I recently took my family to Florida for a week to visit family.We flew back at night and I was amazed at how many lightsthere were on the ground. Big clusters. Groups of homes.Whole neighborhoods. Everywhere we went. How many ofthose home owners are using these chemicals to get a plush,green lawn, a lot of time with not such great results? Millions,I bet. That’s a lot of bad stuff finally ending up in your reservoir,your swimming hole, your fishing stream, your drinking water.What did they do 50 years ago? I’m not sure, but maybe theCooperative Extension or someone else knows. Ask aboutalternatives. There’s got to be a better way. Better for theenvironment. Better for us. Think about it.Me - I’ll weed by hand, leave the clippings on the lawn andhope for the best. Starting this year, do us all a favor - Saveyour money, find another way, and settle for less. The Department is sponsoring a memberrecruitment weekend Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22, atits fire station at 480 North Greenbush Road. The public isinvited to visit the station any time between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.on either day to learn more from DFD volunteers. Refreshmentswill be available.
Here are some highlights from the April 11th, 2012 regularmeeting of the Sand Lake Town Board:• Public Hearing - Proposed Zoning Code – A secondpublic hearing was held on the proposed Zoning Code. Iappreciate the comments from all who participated. Your advicewill be invaluable in helping the Board reach an appropriateconclusion on the proposed code.• Shared Service Agreement Gasoline – The Boardadopted a shared service agreement allowing the Town’s threefire departments and ambulance service to share the servicesof the Town’s fuel depot. They will be able to purchase gasolineat our wholesale cost.• Purchase of a Community Van – The Town Boardunanimously agreed to settle the federal lawsuit against theTown and to operate a van that is wheelchair accessible andcomplies with federal ADA law for a period of three years. Inreturn, the federal lawsuit against the Town was dropped andthe Town will not be required to pay for the plaintiffs’ legalfees. The Board approved purchase of a van which will meetour specifications. We hope to have it on the road serving ourelderly and disabled residents within six weeks. I am happy toput the lawsuit behind us and I’m even more delighted to providean essential service to our citizens.• Rensselaer County Sewer Rent Increase – The Countynotified the Town that the Rensselaer County Legislatureapproved a three step sewer rate increase. For customers inSand Lake, the county sewer rates increase from $127.50 perunit per year to $153.00 effective April 1, 2012; $183.60effective July 1, 2012; and then $201.85 effective July 1,2013.• Procedural Rules Amendment – The Town Boardapproved minor changes to the Town’s procedural rules toreflect that the Town Supervisor is responsible for preparing allproposed resolutions and that the Town Clerk will be responsiblefor making available to the public for review any publicdocuments that will be discussed at Board Meetings and postingthem on the Town’s website to the extent practicable.Please stop by my office or call me with ideas, questions orconcerns. They poked me in the eye andwhen I complained about it, they said “Oops” and poked me inthe other eye. When I complained about that they said, shut-up and take your medicine, and proceeded to kick me in theshins.To recap the reason for their frenzied responses here on March8th, in 350 words or less; Initially unknown DemocratUnderwood initiated a boycott on the Schodack Dems website.The boycott webpage told lies about me and urged teachersand state workers to boycott my store. I called the otherbusinessmen who were boycotted to find out what we had incommon. I then downloaded the website as evidence, calledmy lawyer and told him I was the victim of libel. As I was writingmy first letter to the editor here about it, the webpage wasunceremoniously taken down. Troubled by the prospect of Ms.Underwood holding any elected position where she couldfurther harm my business, and told that I could not run a letterin the paper the week before the election, I paid for a politicalad to urge people to help me keep her out of public office. Shelost her bid for election and I wrote a heartfelt thank-youletter here to everyone who chose not to put her on the townboard. Since then she deflected culpability by suggesting thatmy defense of my reputation was really just an unwarrantedattack for the benefit of the Schodack Republicans whom Ididn’t know and hadn’t spoken to. HONORING THE LIFE OF
RAYMOND GIETZMany in the area remember Ray Gietz, who passed away lastDecember at the age of 96. Ray was born and lived most of hislife in Castleton. He graduated from SUNY Fredonia, receivinga Master’s degree in music education. For 28 years, he taughtmusic at Columbia High School in East Greenbush, serving aschoral director and providing individual instruction in voice,keyboards and woodwinds and retiring in 1978. In 1975, hereceived the Teacher of the Year award from East GreenbushTeachers Association, reflecting a lifetime of distinguishedservice. Additionally, Ray was an accomplished organist andchoir director, serving many congregations in Albany, Castleton,and East Greenbush. While in England during World War II, hewas an Army surgical tech. He used this experience to servewith the Castleton Volunteer Ambulance service for 31 yearsas a driver, medical tech, and EMT. Ray lived a life of lovingservice to the people of our area by volunteering, mentoringyoung people, and enriching our lives with music. We willgather together to celebrate the life of this wonderful man thisSaturday, on April 21st, at 11AM at Emmanuel Reformed Churchin Castleton. ~ Submitted by Barbara Spink

If they wanta look at what a million square feet looks like, just ride downRoute 9 and take a look at the Hannaford distribution center.When the disagreements over Hannaford were going on, Idon’t remember anyone from the Birchwood coming to meetings,donating money for legal fees or attending the manydemonstrations being held. MORE ON THE D.W.I. ISSUELetter to the Editor: I have just received the evaluations fromthe last victim impact panel at Bulmer Hall, at H.V.C.C. Out ofthe 90+ attendees, the greater majority are women indicatingthat they are getting arrested more often and their bloodalcohol contents are getting higher. Here is an example of anexplanation one of them had with a BAC of .23. “I am glad Ididn’t meet another driver on the road that night I wasarrested.”She also stated in reply to the question “Did youhave any consideration of the consequences at the time ofyour D.W.I. arrest?? Her reply, “YES” But she still operated amotor vehicle putting people at serious risk.There were 21 repeat offenders who could have had multipleconvictions of D.W.I. There were about 10 underage arrestsfor D.W.I. There was one male who was arrested for D.W. I.twice in 2 weeks. Disturbing isn’t it??I want to discuss what happens to the no shows, sleepers,and those who dare to show up intoxicated. They aresummoned to the court and told to write an apology letter tothe panel. In all the years I have been a panelist, I have onlyseen one such letter.Now let’s deal with the issue of the 21 repeat offenders. Theywere given conditional licenses/hardship licenses granted bythe court and D.M.V. Were they multiple offenders? Unknownto me at this time. This is why we need to support our legislatorsto approve of the three strikes and you are out law havingthese offenders lose their license forever.To have our justice system finally admit to my saying thatD.W.I. is America’s only socially acceptable crime of potentialviolence, and finally taking the proper steps to close theloopholes that give credence to that statement will be onemore step towards getting the drunk drivers off the roads andkeeping our loved ones safe from injury or possible death.~ Bill Dikant, D.W.I. UNANSWERED ARE UNACCEPTABLELetter to the Editor: At the Sand Lake Town Board meetingsheld on February 8, 2012 and March 14, 2012, I questionedSupervisor Fasoldt on whether or not she did a financial analysison the purchase of a Wheelchair Accessible Van and on herdecision to reduce the building renewal fees. I merely askedwhether or not the town took a hard look at how the financialdecisions would impact the budget this year and in the future.The answer to both questions was “NO”.I then asked her whether or not she was able to review thefinancial documentation for the Sand Lake Ambulance as theyare provided by taxpayer’s dollars. Again she responded “NO”.So when I returned on April 11, 2012, I was confronted by heruncivilized behavior in her statement that the questions I wasasking were not appropriate and were politically motivated. Iam disappointed that our Town Supervisor instead of followingher campaign mantra’s of “Open Government”, “FiscalResponsibility” and “Civility” would treat me, a town residentand taxpayer, with disrespect and arrogance. Furthermore,it is disappointing to see her take these very legitimate concerns,concerns which I have voiced for over the past four years,and make them political fodder to hide the real issue-fiscalresponsibility.I am merely trying to find out how the Town of Sand Lake isspending my money and your money, as taxpayers. We havea right to know what is going on and how the decisions oftoday will impact tomorrow. Would any of you go into aSupermarket and blindly turn over money without expecting areceipt showing how your money was spent? The team is currently preparing for worldfinals and has started to do fundraising to help fund the costsfor travel and lodging.

In the past,people might have suggested exercise or socializing to reducestress, but on many campuses the therapy of choice today isquickly becoming daily meditation. According to ChristopherWillard, Tufts University psychologist, “With a daily meditationpractice, students don’t have to believe their worrisomethoughts that tell them they will fail a test, or their depressedthoughts that advise them they are unlovable. Meditatorsbecome free of impulsive thoughts that taunt them intosnapping at their friend, going on an eating or drinking binge,or making some unnecessary purchase.” For only a five-minuteinvestment every day, meditators soon realize that everythought is only a suggestion, not an imperial command.Actually, stress can be very helpful. Stress is nature’s way ofalerting you to some form of inner conflict that needsresolution. The more you meditate, you’ll gain three essentialskills that help you resolve inner conflicts and transform stressinto strength. These skills are detachment, discrimination andwill power. Through meditation, you first learn to how to becomedetached from your stressful thoughts. Secondly, you learnhow to use the discrimination of your own conscience todetermine your thoughts, words and actions. Finally, you learnhow to increase your will power so you can more easily baseyour actions on your own inner wisdom. The more you meditateand use these three meditation skills, you’ll feel less stressand more energy and creativity to be a success. That beingsaid, you always want to remember that your physician isyour health care partner. BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS PADDLE FOR
HOPE IN THEIR DRAGON BOAT
Celebrating our 5th anniversary season,Hope in the Boat is a team of breast cancersurvivors who paddle a dragon boat forrecreation, fitness and to raise awarenessof the quality of life during and after cancertreatment. By paddling together, our missionis to promote wellness, and provide hopeand partnership to those on the breastcancer journey. We accomplish this through the ancient sportof dragon boating, which is becoming one of the fastestgrowing sports in the world, and particularly in the US. Teammembers practice paddling once or twice weekly in Cohoes onthe Hudson River where the boat is docked from mid-May untilMid-September. Members may also participate in friendlycompetition with other teams in the Northeast during thesummer. Most of our members also attended the InternationalBreast Cancer Survivors Dragon Boat Festival in Canada in2010 with 70 teams from all over the world. Those who areinterested will have the opportunity to participate in the nextInternational Breast Cancer Survivors Dragon Boat Festivalin Florida in 2014. During the off-season, team membersmeet monthly for discussion and team building activities. Hopein the Boat is looking for breast cancer survivors who wouldlike to join this unique paddling team. You may have seen this week’s athlete in Mr. AP last month;Josh Mead, also known as Shmead, is a senior at Averill ParkHigh School and a Varsity Tennis player. Josh started playingtennis his freshman year and learned how to play by attendinga tennis summer camp a couple years before 9th grade. Josh issomeone that works hard and gets along with everyone. He isalways a pleasure to be around and is always willing to help outor lend someone a hand. His character shows even in hisextracurricular activities; outside of school Josh is volunteerfireman for the Poestenkill Fire Department. In his spare time,Mead enjoys hanging out with his friends and family, playingtennis with his friends, working at the Hollywood Drive-In andplaying video games. Next year, Josh is going to attend HudsonValley Community College and is looking to study something inthe Engineering field. He was hoping to continue his tenniscareer, but there isn’t a men’s team at HVCC, so he is just goingto play as much as he can in his spare time. Mead’s favoritepart about tennis is serving, because he can control how heserves whether it is a fast, slow or curved serve. To preparefor his season, Josh buys some fresh new sneakers and fixesup his racket to make sure that it will work to its best ability.“Matches always have a moment or multiple moments whenyou make a mistake, make an amazing hit, or when you hadboth a long and fun point,” replied Josh about his matches.Mead likes to listen to music before the away matches and saysthat it helps him to get focused. “Being a dedicated athletemeans that you are committed to your sport and like playing it,”said Mead. Josh said that he didn’t have just one person whoinspires him to be the person he is today, but he said he hadmany--his parents, family and friends. He would also like tothank his parents for raising him the way they did and thankthem for his success. Best of luck to Josh and the rest of theVarsity Tennis team as their 2012 season is well underway andtheir matches are heating up.
There is no rest for the weary. Over the vacation, the Warriorsbattled in multiple challenging competitions. This week,Lacrosse, Baseball, and Softball teams all came out to do theirbest for Averill Park athletics!To start off the week, the Girl’s Lacrosse team challenged AP’srival: the Columbia Blue Devils. Averill Park was in control thewhole game and demolished Columbia 13-2. High scorers ofthe game were Molly O’Bryan with three goals, and DarianGoyer, Emily Halpin, Marionna Valente, and Morgan Lionaronseach with two. The ladies then took on Shaker. The girls foughthard but couldn’t pull out another victory. They fell short 18-2.Goals were scored by Morgan Lionarons and Molly O’Bryan.Baseball and Softball also played Columbia and Shaker lastweek. AP Baseball, with a depleted roster, played Columbia onWednesday. Unfortunately, even after a rally in the last innings,they fell short 10-6. The boys also played Shaker, but theShaker powerhouse came away with another win. Averill Parklost 12-6. Our baseball team is working on recouping and issure to be ready to take on their next opponent. Good luckboys!The Girl’s Softball team took on Columbia on Wednesday. Theladies fought hard but lost 4-0. Although the ladies had anumber of great hits, they were unable to score a run. TheLady Warriors returned to battle Shaker on Friday. The Warriorsclashed with the Bison and won 9-5. Numerous runs werescored by Caroline Woods and Molly Fryer. Congratulationsladies on your first win of the season! Keep it up!Next week will be another challenging one for AP without adoubt, so make sure to come out and support the Warriors!
