DUMPSTERS

By: Hannah LefflerAva Welling“It may sound cliché and generic, but my art really is an expressionof myself”, says Ava Welling, asenior here at Averill Park HighSchool. Ava is a very dedicated artstudent who will work on an artproject for hours after school tillshe remembers that she should getsome sleep. She is a senior here atthe high school and has taken justabout every art class the school canoffer throughout her time here. This year, Ava is involved in; SeniorPortfolio, ceramics, 2d Design, and

also an independent art study. Even with all these classes, plusher academic ones, Ava still finds time to keep her overallaverage at a 90, as well as play tennis for the Averill ParkVarsity team and snowboard. Ava says that art relaxes her,and “even when I’m stressed out and crazy, I can go work onan art project and make all of that float away.” Ava findsinspiration all over to create her amazing pieces, and she foundthat the moment she started creating she loved it and wantedto keep pursuing it. Right now, Ava knows she wants to attendart school and is thinking about doing communications design orpossibly being an art director of a magazine one day. Ava wasalso one of the students to attend portfolio day, and at theevent, she was accepted in some colleges, along with receivingscholarship recommendations because of her talented art work.Ava says that “some people can write books or write music, butI can make art and I love it.” I wish you the best Ava with yourfuture. You’re extremely talented and will get very far in lifewith your work!

IT STILL CONTINUES!

Letter to the Editor: Over 600 D.W.I. Arrests here inRensselaer County yearly. Some of the deals made by theD.A. and defense Lawyers is beyond reproach.Short prison terms for those who kill innocents. Is it because ofthe “Recession” as stated in one news item??? There is now an“Administrative law on 3 Strikes of D.W.I. and the drivers licenseis Gone for life. Hopefully, with no Hardship or other lameexcuses dreamed up by the defendant’s Lawyer. With the rapidly advancing Christmas Holiday’s, I ask all tomake a choice not to drink, then attempt to drive. Have inplace a designated Driver, Hire a Limo, instead of you, or yourVictims last ride in a Hearse. Enjoy your festivities in a safe &sane manor. “Don’t Drink Alcoholic Beverages & Drive!”~ Bill Dikant, D.W.I. Victim Advocate, Castleton

As legislative representatives of District 2, including the townsof East Greenbush, North Greenbush and Poestenkill, we arehappy to provide our constituents with a report on actionstaken at the November 13, 2012 legislative meeting. We are very excited to have been able to play an importantrole in a major economic development project. Regeneron, apharmaceutical research and biotechnology company in EastGreenbush, will be expanding and in the process creating 300new jobs. The expansion is due in part to the county sewer district, which is supervised by the County Legislature, extending sewerservices to Regeneron. East Greenbush was unable to providethe service because the town sewer service is now overcapacity. Under a plan approved at the November legislativemeeting, Regeneron will link to the county pump station inRensselaer. The extension of service happened thanks to a partnershipbetween Regeneron and the state, county and local offices. We are looking forward to Regeneron completing this expansionand continuing to maintain and add jobs at their facility. It isour added hope that this sewer extension helps East Greenbushwith the town’s capacity issues. We have extended offers tothe town to assist in providing sewer services and look forwardto those discussions progressing.Along with the November meeting, legislators also beganconsideration of the proposed 2013 county budget. The budgetcomplies with the statewide tax cap and also maintains neededcounty services, despite the challenges posed by the ongoingrecession and lack of mandate relief. The fact that the countyis complying with the tax cap is notable, given the fact thatother neighboring counties are not complying with the taxcap.Legislators approved a resolution for the distribution ofrevenues from the filing of mortgages in the county during asix-month period from April through September. In District 2,East Greenbush will receive $263,476, North Greenbush$189,619 and Poestenkill $61,078.We were also joined by the family of the late John “Jack”Kennedy. Jack was a longtime employee of the town of EastGreenbush, also active in community organizations and weextended our condolences on his passing. The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature isTuesday, December 11, 2012. Residents are welcome to contactus at our legislative offices by writing to the Rensselaer CountyLegislature, 1600 7th Avenue, Troy NY 12180 or by e-mailingus via the off icial legislative website atwww.rensselaercounty.org.

OBAMACARE IS CORPORATE WELFARE

Letter to the Editor: Once again Santa Obama has won anelection by pandering to those who like his presents. Those ofus who’ve been paying for those presents are now wonderinghow we’ll survive four more years of upside down economicpolicy.Well, we must continue to fight for the truth.Do you think President Obama is being honest when he says hewants the rich to pay a little more? “Tax the rich” is emptyrhetoric and needs to be exposed as such. A tax on the rich isa tax on all Americans. You have to know it’s a ruse when someof Obama’s rich friends have publicly stated that they thinkthey should pay more. We’ve always taxed the rich. Where’s it gotten us? The richgot richer by passing their tax increases along in the cost ofthe products the rest of America depends on.John Kerry is the richest Senator in U.S. history and wouldhave been the richest President had he won the 2004 race.Think he genuinely wants the rich to pay more after the lengthshe went to in avoiding taxes on his yacht? The rich stand to gain a lot from Obamacare. Insurancecompanies are “the rich”. Left wing “non-profit” organizationslike AARP stand to profit immensely through the sale of healthinsurance. Big Corporations love it because they can shed healthcare costs at the same time that their pesky competition, localMain Street businesses, will be crippled with increased costs. Many local employers will downsize or go out of business, becausethey will not be able to afford these mandates. Their employeesare going to have their hours cut or lose their jobs altogether.Obamacare is a federal assault on local business – a tax onMain Street.Obama’s Green Jobs scheme is more corporate welfare, justanother way to funnel tax dollars to rich corporations thatcontributed to his election campaign. It’s time to end the empty rhetoric. Tax the insurancecompanies, end corporate welfare and stop spending the restof America’s hard earned income.~ David Crawmer, www.republicamerica.usEditor s Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsementof the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossibleto verify the truth and veracity of its contents.

PURIFIED FOR PEACE

PEACE, a gift of God’s grace, is the theme of worship at theStuyvesant and Nassau Reformed Churches on December 9,the Second Sunday in Advent. The service of both churcheswill begin with the lighting of “A Candle for Peace” on theAdvent wreath. The theme will be developed around Malachi3:1-4 where in the prophet Malachi speaks of the one whocomes “like a refiner’s fire” to purify and redeem Israel; andthe Gospel of Luke 3:1-6 where in John the Baptist appears inthe wilderness preaching a “baptism of repentance for theforgiveness of sins.”The Stuyvesant Reformed Church begins worship at 9 a.m. inits sanctuary at the intersection of route 9J and Church Street,Stuyvesant. Diane Gelhorn and her family will celebrate thePeace in Christ in their conducting the Advent Wreath Lightingritual at Stuyvesant Reformed Church. The Nassau Reformed Church begins worship at 11 a.m. in itschapel on the second level of its Church-School-Building, 43Church St., (Rte. 20) village of Nassau. Jean Leininger, CarolSanford, Grandchildren and great grandchildren will celebratethe Peace in Christ in their conducting the Advent WreathLighting Ceremony at Nassau Reformed Church.

SCHODACK’S FORMER TOWN HALL

SOON A MEMORY

Letter to the Editor: By the time you read this bit of info,Schodack’s old town hall may be history and too late for apicture. The bids for demolition came in at a surprising widespread difference. Four bids were received for the amountsof $85,412.00; == $42,000.00; == $34,000.00; and$25,997.00. A meeting was called for Thursday, November15th, as the regular meeting would have occurred onThanksgiving. Along with other items of business, the agendacalled for accepting the low bid of $25,997.00. I am quitesure the Town Board was as much surprised at the low bid asI am. All indications pointed to a much higher bid, but maybethis low bidder has plans to rebuild this building instead of justscraping it which would be nice to have happen. I am suremany residents will be happy to see what they called an eyesoredisappear. It is also good to see Schodack getting an attractivebid for once. There comes a time when credit should be given to the townboard and this may be that time. It appears the decision toseek demolition bids was a wise move. I am aware that eventhe low bid is money being spent that is really not a necessity, but the old saying is, sometimes one has to spend money tomake money. Let’s hope the town will now at least put up theirown for sale sign, as it appears previous agents could notcome up with a buyer. Let’s also hope if the town is the seller,it may be able to choose a buyer who will develop the site tothe liking of the people. Now a part of Schodack’s past will go down in the historybooks. So it’s Good-bye to the old town hall. Many will missyou and reminisce about the history made inside. If only thewalls could talk, we would have some tales to tell. Farewell oldtimer, I have seen you come and will now see you go.~ Ray Lemka, Schodack ResidentEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsementof the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossibleto verify the truth and veracity of its contents.

COUNTY UNDERGOING EMERGENCY

COMMUNICATIONS REVIEW

URGES RESIDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN PROGRAM SURVEYRensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino is urgingelected officials and residents to participate in the County’sEmergency Communications Survey. The survey processconsists of two components. The first seeks to better ascertainhow towns, cities, and villages disseminate critical emergencyinformation and how the County and those municipalities canwork together to ensure that residents are informed during anemergency or crisis. Local officials have been sent informationregarding the review. The second part of the review seeks to ascertain how theresidents of Rensselaer County receive or seek out informationduring an emergency. For residents to participate in the process, they are urged to visit www.surveymonkey.com/s/RensselaerCommunitySurvey before December 10th. Residentsunable to access the website to participate in the survey canhave a copy mailed to them by emailing [email protected] or by calling (518)270-2633. Residents participatingin the survey will be entered into a drawing for a free homeemergency kit.“The way we send and receive information has undergone somedynamic changes in just the last few years. Without a doubtthe internet and social media seem to be playing a larger role inhow residents receive information. The purpose of this reviewis to see how the various levels of government communicatewith each other and their constituents as well as to find out themost effective way to disseminate information to our residents,”concluded Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino.

“LACK OF CREDIBILITY AT

CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION(S)”Letter to the Editor: After taking more than a dozen Civil Servicetests between the county and the state, and scoring very wellon most, I waited for the calls. To my surprise, I’m glad I wasn’tholding my breath, because if I was, I would be dead by now.Eventually, I was called for “clerk” position interview. Aftermaking the rounds at various county offices – to no avail – Ifinally had an interview for a position that really interested meand was compatible with my education and background. It waswith Rensselaer County and was for an Assistant ProbationOfficer. I figured I’m a shoe in for the position; I have an A.A.S.degree in Criminal Justice; I have a B.A. from SUNY at StonyBrook; I have a J.D. (law degree) from Albany Law School; andfurthermore, I’m admitted to the bar.So, after interviewing, and the interviewer never calling likeshe said she would, I called back myself, to no avail. Finally, shesent a letter which basically said “sorry, but the position hasbeen filled.” Thereafter, I went down to the Rensselaer CountyCivil Service Commission to see what exactly had happened. The person at the office called someone from upstairs thatpresented me with a book to view and explained to me how theprocess works. The person said that Civil Service law requiresthat they appoint someone from the top three candidates.Being that I was number two, I figured what happened? Well, when the person pulled the list out, there were a number ofcandidates; one number one, about twelve or so number twocandidates and about thirty number three candidates. And, as for the state jobs: of all the tests I took, and all thelists I’m on, not one person has been hired from any of thoselists after several years!Five hundred dollars wasted, and all for an opportunity thatsupposedly is based on the “merit” system.~ Creston F. LEBANON VALLEY SPEEDWAY ATTEMPTING

TO OVERTURN ZONING LAWS FOR

MOTORCROSS TRACK

Letter to the Editor: Think the racetrack is noisy now? Plansare underway for a 6 a.m. start on Sundays with roaring motorsand all day races until 9 p.m.A group of concerned citizens within a 5 mile radius is workingto stop this zoning change covering the towns of New Lebanonand Stephentown. For many months the ZBA of Stephentownhas been holding hearings about the legal and environmentissues that the proposal involves. The Board has accepted theDraft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). Those inopposition feel that it is far from complete. The law requiresthat provision for public comment be provided, but the ZBAhas ruled only written comments would be considered. Thoseopposing are working hard to inform the citizens as to what ishappening and to join them in attending meetings, writingletters and contributing to the expenses. The opposition hasbeen forced to hire experts in noise impact, traffic, parking, landscape architecture and real estate values at considerableexpense. They feel it is vitally important to have a communityunited in opposition to this attack on their rural quality of lifeand land values.Zoning changes require a compelling reason to alter the law.Opponents see no compelling reason for this move. Nocommercial enterprises are allowed in residential areas.~ Bob Baum, New LebanonEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement

As legislative representatives of District 4, including the towns ofSchodack, Nassau and Sand Lake, we are happy to provideresidents with an update on actions taken at the November 13,2012 legislative meeting. Along with the meeting, legislators alsobegan review of the proposed 2013 county budget. The budget isnotable because it complies with the state tax cap, at a time whenother neighboring counties have decided to exceed the 2 percenttax cap. The budget is the latest to be crafted during a difficultrecession and without promised reform of state and federal mandates. The proposed 2013 budget does maintain needed county services, including services for seniors, veterans and youths, along withprotecting the solid bond ratings and fiscal reviews the county hasearned. We are proud to have helped by reducing spending in thelegislative offices for 2013 to help control costs. The Legislature played an important role in a major economicdevelopment project. At the November meeting, we approved aresolution to include Regeneron in the sewer district, partly becausethe host community of East Greenbush has a sewer system that isover-capacity. By extending sewer service, Regeneron will moveforward with an expansion that will expand its East Greenbushfacility and create 300 new jobs. The sewer expansion was part of an effort that included cooperationbetween state, county and local officials, and we are very excitedto see the Regeneron expansion move forward.Legislators approved distribution of revenues from the filing ofmortgages in the county during a six-month period from Aprilthrough September. In District 4, Schodack will receive $188,433,Nassau $41,661, Sand Lake $142,541, Castleton $7,956, East Nassau$2,797 and Nassau $42,104.The Legislature also adopted a resolution commending veteranswho received medals they were owed for exemplary military serviceat a special breakfast ceremony on November 4. We thank theseveterans and their families for their dedication and service toprotecting our nation and our freedom. We were happy to welcome Rachel Wright of East Schodack tocommend her for graduating from Phoenix Firecamp. Phoenixencourages and trains women interested in the fire service. The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature is Tuesday,December 11. Residents are welcome to contact us at our legislativeoffices by writing to the Rensselaer County Legislature, 1600 7thAvenue, Troy, NY 12180 or by e-mailing us via the official legislativewebsite at www.rensselaercounty.org.

Greetings and best wishes to everyone in the City of Rensselaer. AsRensselaer’s representative to the County Legislature, I am happyto report to you on the actions taken by the Rensselaer CountyLegislature at our November 13, 2012 legislative meeting. With a tough economy, it is important to make every dollar count. That is why I was disappointed to see Time Warner adding a surprisecharge to monthly bills for modems already installed in homes orbusinesses. I join those who believe this charge is unnecessary andexpensive, and have received a number of calls from residentsconcerned about the cost.I will be sponsoring legislation asking the state Public ServiceCommission and other state offices to review this charge and takeaction to stop the unnecessary modem fee. Customers upset withthis charge should contact Time Warner and state officials to voicetheir displeasure.Legislators approved distribution of revenues from the filing ofmortgages in the county during a six-month period from Aprilthrough September. Rensselaer will receive $54,469 via theresolution.Legislators also began reviewing the proposed 2013 county budget. The budget complies with the statewide tax cap and also maintainsneeded county services. The fact that the budget complies with the2 percent tax cap is good news, given the fact that other neighboringcounties are not complying with the tax cap. We will continue toreduce the amount of the 2 percent tax increase.I joined with legislators to support an important economicdevelopment effort. Regeneron will be expanding its East Greenbushfacilities and creating 300 jobs in the process. The expansion wasmade possible thanks to the county sewer district, which issupervised by the County Legislature, providing sewer services toRegeneron. East Greenbush was unable to provide sewer servicesbecause the town sewer system is above capacity. The effort in support of the Regeneron expansion included supportfrom state, county and local officials, and shows the positive effectsof a cooperative approach to economic development. It is also myhope the sewer extension helps relieve some of the sewer issues inEast Greenbush that have affected Rensselaer. The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature is Tuesday,December 11, 2012. Residents are welcome to contact us at ourlegislative offices by writing to the Rensselaer County Legislature,1600 7th Avenue, Troy NY 12180 or by e-mailing us via the officiallegislative website at www.rensselaercounty.org.

SALVATION ARMY

RINGS BELLS FOR

C. BASCOMAgain this year, Salvation Armybells are being rung at the EastGreenbush Wal-Mart bymembers of the Columbia HighSchool Student Council. OnSaturday, Dec. 8, students willbe at the north entrance of thestore all day to ring bells inmemory of “one of their own”,Christopher Bascom, who was16 and a junior at that schoolwhen he was killed by a hit andrun driver nine years ago. OnDec. 1 of this year, Chris wouldhave celebrated his 26thbirthday. To honor him and thevalues he held dear, it isespecial ly appropriate tocommemorate his birthday bydoing “good” for others. Hispassion was to make othershappy; thus, his spirit andcompassion for others will beperpetuated by the studentswho ring the bells in his memory.People who want to honor Chrisand share in this event areencouraged to donate moneyto the Salvation Army in hismemory. Such contributionsmay be made in person at theEast Greenbush Wal-Mart (orany other bell-ringing location)or sent directly to the SalvationArmy Headquarters,Troy Corps,410 River St., Troy, NY 12180.Those who wish all of theirdonation to stay locally, shouldwrite either “In memory ofChristopher Bascom” or “TroyCorps” on the check memo line.By giving in memory ofChristopher, two objectives willbe met; helping a good cause aswell as remembering a wonderfulboy who died much too soon.
