Haida Gwaii

Dates: July 22-26, July 27-31, Aug 21-25, Aug 26-30

Place of Wonder

Our five-day “Place of Wonder” tour visits all of the high points of Gwaii Haanas. We visit four Haida village sites including Ninstints at the World Heritage Site of SGaang

Gwaay Llnagaay (Anthony Island). We paddle through gorgeous marine-scapes and observe beautiful and interesting intertidal marine life. Gwaii Haanas is most

closely associated with cultural and marine activities but the forests of Haida Gwaii are something else again. We hike through some well chosen examples of these

spectacular ancient forests and often find evidence of early Haida use of botanical resources. We stop in at the small community of Rose Harbour where my friend Susan

provides an unforgettable feast from her organic garden and the sea. We fish daily - prawns, salmon, crab, and halibut are often found on the menu. Our mother ship, the M.V. Island Bay will transport us in comfort and safety on a “one-direction only”

adventure that begins or ends with a spectacular seaplane sightseeing flight over Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve.

Our “Legacy Pole” tour offers a comfortable, safe and cost effective way to experience many of the highlights of Gwaii

Haanas National Park Reserve. We travel in comfort aboard the M.V. Island Bay, a 42-foot, Transport Canada certified passenger

vessel that has been safely navigating the waters of Haida Gwaii and the north coast for over thirty years. The Legacy Pole was

erected in the summer of 2013 and now stands proudly at Hlk-yah GaawGa (Windy Bay), commemorating 20 years of cooperation

between the Haida Nation and the Government of Canada making Gwaii Haanas one of National Geographic’s choice places to visit

on the planet. This trip leaves from Cumshewa Inlet and visits several spectacular ancient Haida village sites. We’ll be stopping

at K-uuna Llnagaay (Skedans), T-aanu Llnagaay (Tanu), and Hlk-yah GaawGa (Windy Bay) - all populated by interesting and informative

Haida Gwaii Watchmen. Along the way we’ll be paddling and hiking some spectacular places in Juan Perez Sound and Darwin

Sound such as the Bischoff Islands, De La Beche Inlet, Burnaby Narrows, Echo Harbour. We’ll be fishing for prawns, salmon, crab,

and halibut for the table (we like to eat fresh whenever possible). The Legacy Pole Tour is a great way to experience Gwaii Haanas

with limited time and budget.

Haida Gwaii

Our six-day “Edge of the World” Tour has been our “tried and trusted” Gwaii Haanas adventure tour for over twenty years. It is a well designed, interesting, comfortable and most importantly,

safe way to experience an “Edge of the World” destination. As with our five day trip, we visit all of the main ancient Haida village sites including the World Heritage Site of SGaang Gwaay Llnagaay

(Anthony Island). The sixth day gives us more time for paddling and exploring the more remote and spectacular areas of the park

reserve. We stop at Rose Harbour in the southern portion of the park reserve for a night that you will not forget. Each trip begins or ends with a spectacular Inland Air Charters sightseeing flight

over Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve. The “one direction only” format provides the luxury of time for more paddling and

exploring in this ecologically and culturally unique environment.

white sided dolphins, otters, colorful birds and some of the largest starfish and clams in the world. Playful seals and seal pups often

approach your sea kayaks and if you are very lucky, you may even get to see transient Orcas or Humpback Whales who have also

been spotted during this trip.

Itinerary: The Discovery Islands tour launches from breathtaking Rebecca Spit Provincial Park located in Quadra Island’s Heriot Bay.

Kayakers enjoy setting up camp at a different location each day after paddling the myriad of channels, bays, coves, points and

passages that comprise the Discovery Islands.

Kayak in sheltered waters surrounded by islands, honeycombed sandstone cliffs and sunning seals. Learn how wave action and

salt weathering sculpt the soft sandstone bedrock, resulting in the dramatic tafoni formations that riddle the shoreline. Afternoon

is when seals take their siesta, and are often found asleep on the rocks, camouflaged amongst the sandstone. Otters, eagles,

herons, and other wildlife are also regularly encountered. No experience necessary! Our passionate guides have a keen interest

Daily, April - October (start time varies with sunset)

Join us for a memorable evening experiencing and learning about bioluminescence -- the production and emmission of light by

organisms. Bioluminescence occurs in the Gulf Islands seasonally as warmer temperatures allow dinoflagellates -- single celled

plant-like organisms to flourish. When disturbed, dinoflagellates emit light as a defence mechanism. As the light fades and your

paddle becomes harder to see, its movement through the water is soon illuminated as it agitates the living ocean. Although wildlife

is difficult to see above the water in darkness, movements of other creatures below the surface are illuminated as well. Schools of fish

that remain elusive during the day reveal their presence by the comet’s tail of sparkeling light they trail behind them. This unique tour is accessible to all paddlers (provided you have no fear of the

dark!).

Itinerary: Begins at sunset. Roundtrip from Montague Harbour Marina. 20-30 min orientation and (dry) dock-side lesson as the

The Coastal Route is 7 days and 50 miles of remote paddling in the Stunning Sea of Cortez. The spectacular cliffs, geology, sandy

beached, wildlife and turquoise waters make this one of our favourite routes. There will be ample time in the afternoon for beach combing, snorkeling, and desert exploration. This route

will bring us to a new campsite most nights. Weather permitting; we usually spend the last night Coronado Island, before

The 10-day “Loreto to La Paz” trip is a slightly more advanced trip then our others. This trip is very remote route with only a few road access points along the way. The coastline is ever changing

afternoons for snorkeling, hiking and relaxation. We pass by hot springs, small fishing camps and villages set along this amazing

This is our newer routes and definitely one of our most exciting. We created this route because it’s one we really like and one

that people have been asking about for years. It’s designed for moderate to advanced paddlers. It’s a nice mix of a few long

It is a fully catered trip, making this a true vacation from all responsibilities! Come and check out the pristine lagoon and this phenomenal island in the national marine park. Three days

with the fabulous beaches of Isla Carmen and Isla Danzante, then we’ll cross over and paddle south along the remote coastline to

Desolation Sound is the name given to the small body

of water south of West Redonda Island, bordered by

Mary Point, Sarah Point, Junction Point, Horace Head

and Otter Island, though the name is often meant to

include the adjacent Discovery Islands, the unoffi cial

name for the archipelago that includes Quadra, Cortes

and the Redonda islands and those as far west as

Hardwicke Island. Desolation was named by Capt. George

Vancouver, who wrote in June 1792: ‘Our residence here

was truly forlorn; an awful silence pervaded the gloomy

forests, whilst animated nature seemed to have deserted

the neighbouring country...”

Desolation Sound and the Discovery Islands are the

traditional lands of the Klahoose, Homalco, Sliammon and

Laich-Kwil-Tach/Tlowitis First Nations. Communities once

dotted the region, with modern First Nations communities

now centered at Sliammon at Powell River, Cape Mudge on

Quadra Island and Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island. Reserves

are marked on the map in pink along with the name of the

associated First Nation; traditional place names (if known)

are in italics. Reserves should be treated as private property.

Other traditional-use sites, sacred sites and burial grounds

dot the area and visitors should be aware to minimize impact

on traditional or cultural land.

Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park, Copeland

Islands Marine Provincial Park, Malaspina Marine

Provincial Park and Okeover Arm Provincial Park

are linked as a BC Parks management unit. In 2013

designated camping locations were created with sets of

tent pads to replace the previous camp-where-you-can

system, in part to protect culturally sensitive locations

such as middens. Tent pad clusters at each site are set

near a scenic common area with a bench and table. Other

informal camping locations are now closed, while sites

outside the park are not affected. A backcountry camping

fee applies for the marine park campsites.

A group of volunteers is working to create a marine trail

through British Columbia by establishing a network of

campsites, launch sites and all-weather havens. When this

trail is complete it will link waterways from Washington to

Alaska and all coastal points between through a network

of campsites every 16 kilometres or less. The fi rst two

sections of the trail cover the Gulf Islands off southeast

Vancouver Island and northwest Vancouver Island from

Port Hardy to Tofi no. Desolation Sound’s section is nearing

completion, and so when formalized should vastly increase

the number of formal sites through the Discovery Islands.

Visit www.bcmarinetrails.org.

This region is famous for its strong tidal fl ows. Rapids in

restricted channels creating dangerous rips, whirlpools

and overfalls. Seymour Narrows lies in the south end of

Discovery Passage in the main shipping route through

this region, with strong currents and rips throughout the

vicinity. Surge Narrows is on the east side of Quadra Island,

growing in fame for the surf waves ideal for whitewater

kayaking. More rapids lie upstream in Okisollo Channel and

another three in close proximity between Calm and Cordero

channels – Dent Rapids, Gillard Passage and Yaculta

Rapids. Overfalls of up to several metres occur nearby at

Arran Rapids. All can be dangerous at peak times.

Outside the provincial parks, camping is unregulated

wilderness camping. Because of the casual nature, the sites

indicated on this mapsheet run a spectrum from established

campsites to just small spots for a tent. Some sites,

particularly near Desolation Sound, are well established

and offer good beach access and cleared, level areas often

suitable for large groups. Many of the more remote locations

are not established and so have poorer access and may

be suitable for single tents only. Beaches are generally

poor throughout the region so landings may involve rocks.

Consult guide books such as The BC Coast Explorer series

for details on the various camping options.

The marine information is provided for trip planning only

and not meant for navigation. Locations of hazards are

generalized and proper Hydrographic Service marine charts

must be consulted when navigating this region. Logging

roads as indicated do not imply passage is possible.

Information conveyed in these maps was made possible

with the assistance of BC Parks, the Canadian Hydrographic

Service and GeoBase. Additional information from Sailing

Directions, British Columbia Coast (South Portion), Canadian

Hydrographic Service, 2004.
