LUKE 1:26–56
In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town
in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a 27
descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to 28
her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with
you.”
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind29
of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, 30
Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and 31
give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be 32
great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will
give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the 33
house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”
“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”34
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and35
the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be
born will be called the Son of God.
“Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old 36
age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For 37
nothing is impossible with God.”
3
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as38
you have said.” Then the angel left her.
At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill39
country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted 40
Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her41
womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice 42
she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child
you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord 43
should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached 44
my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has 45
believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!”
And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit46 47
rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble 48
state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name.49
His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to 50
generation.
“He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered 51
those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down 52
rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the 53
hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has 54
helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and 55
his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers.”
Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then56
returned home.
M: (*) The Lord will come again in glory.
The Spirit and the Church cry out: Come, Lord Jesus, come.
HYMN “Mary of the Incarnation”
1. Mary of the incarnation, (Luke 1:26–58)
Youthful mother of her King,
Listening, trusting, traveling, working:
See her wonder, hear her sing!
4
O, for such a mind as Mary’s,
Thinking psalms, as notes combine;
Quick to learn, by speech or silence, (John 2:1–12)
When the water flowed as wine!
2. Mary of the crucifixion, (Luke 2:35)
Warned of her heart-rendering role,
Following close where nails and scourges (John 19:25)
Tear her Son and pierce her soul.
O, for such a love as Mary’s,
Costly, pure, enduring long,
Sharing threats and thorns and darkness
When most helpless, thus most strong!
3. Mary of the resurrection, (Acts 1:14)
True disciple, Spirit-born:
All her joy, still, God her Savior; (Luke 1:47)
Bless’d the mother made to mourn!
O, for Easter faith like Mary’s,
Life that death cannot erase,
Greeting new-found brothers, sisters,
One in Christ for prayer and praise!
(use space below for notes, if you wish)
SERMON ON LUKE 1:26–38
“Open My Eyes to See ..”
1. Your mother’s heart
2. Gabriel’s counterpart

SONG OF MARY page 57 in the front of the hymnal
(*) My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
My spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
The Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he has remembered his promise of mercy—
the promise made to our fathers,
to Abraham, and to his children for ever. Amen.
