2018 UIW FOOTBALL Eric Morris | Head Coach/QBs Eric Morris was announced as the third head coach of the University of the Incarnate Word football program by Director of Athletics Dr. Brian Wickstrom, on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017. Morris joined UIW from Texas Tech, where he spent the previous five seasons as offensive coordinator for the prolific Red Raiders offense.

“I’m excited about the vision and the leadership that Dr. Evans and Dr. Wickstrom have established for UIW athletics,” Morris said. “They’ve been awesome throughout this process. To have what I see as a power-five president and a power-five athletic director to help generate the resources we need to get the program where it needs to go is exciting. Morris produced one of the most high-scoring offenses in the country, guiding Tech to annual top 20 rankings in total offense and top 10 rankings in passing offense.

The Red Raiders averaged over 30 points per game during Morris’ tenure and set the single-season school record with 45.1 points per game in 2015. Morris helped Tech to three bowl appearances, including a Birmingham Bowl bid in 2017. The Red Raiders ranked 10th in passing offense and 16th in total offense that season, racking up 474.6 yards per game, including 333.7 through the air.

Tech led the nation in 2016 with an average of 566.6 yards of total offense, including 463 passing yards per game. Morris tutored Jonathan Giles and Keke Coutee -- both true sophomores in 2016 -- to breakout years. Giles earned All-Big 12 second team honors after recording 1,158 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns, both of which ranked in the top 10 in Tech single-season history. Coutee finished second on the team with 890 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. The program’s success offensively in 2015 pushed Tech to an appearance in the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl. The Red Raiders closed the 2015 campaign ranked No. 2 nationally in total offense, scoring offense and passing offense.

Tech was consistent throughout the 2015 season, totaling at least 25 points in all 13 games. The Red Raiders were one of just two teams nationally and the only team in a Power 5 conference to score 25 or more points in every game that season.

Morris created a balanced attack that featured a 4,000-yard passer in Patrick Mahomes II, a 1,000-yard rusher in DeAndre Washington and a 1,000-yard receiver in Jakeem Grant. It marked the first time in Tech history that three different Red Raiders reached those marks in the same season.

Under Morris’ guidance, Grant ended his career as the all-time leading receiver in Tech history. An All-America honoree by several publications, Grant totaled 3,164 receiving yards over his four seasons, breaking the previous school record that was set by two-time Biletnikoff Award winner Michael Crabtree.

In 2014, Morris’ first season as the lone offensive coordinator, Tech finished with a No. 10 national ranking in total offense after the Red Raiders averaged 504.1 yards per game. Tech also averaged 351.1 yards per game through the air to end the season with a No. 5 national ranking.

The Red Raiders displayed a balanced attack that season thanks in part to Washington’s impact on the ground game. Washington rushed for 1,103 yards over 12 games, marking the first time a Red Raider running back reached the 1,000-yard mark since Ricky Williams in 1998.

Morris shared offensive coordinator responsibilities during his debut season in 2013. The Red Raiders displayed the nation’s second-ranked passing attack (392.8 yards per game) and the eighth-best unit for total offense (511 yards-per-game). The solid offensive season earned Tech an appearance in the National University Holiday Bowl, where the Red Raiders pulled off a stunning 37-23 victory over No. 16 Arizona State.

Jace Amaro closed 2013 campaign with one of the best seasons by a receiver in program history. Amaro, a second-round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, set an NCAA FBS record for most receiving yards (1,352) in a single season by a tight end and was named an NCAA Consensus All-American.

Morris, a native of Shallowater, Texas, spent the 2012 season as the inside receivers coach for former Tech Head Coach Mike Leach at Washington State. In his only season with the Cougars, the Washington State receiving corps hauled in 3,965 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Prior to heading to Pullman, Morris spent two years on Kevin Sumlin’s staff at the University of Houston, first as an offensive graduate assistant in 2010 and then as the offensive quality control assistant in 2011. Morris coached the Cougars alongside current Texas Tech Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury, who served as Houston’s quarterbacks coach in 2010 before being promoted to co-offensive coordinator a year later.

Morris and Kingsbury helped produce one of the nation’s top offenses in 2011 as the Cougars led the country in passing (443.8 yards per game), total offense (599.0 yards per game) and scoring average (50.8 points per game). Houston concluded the season with a 12-1 record, which included a win over Penn State in the TicketCity Bowl.

Before joining the coaching ranks, Morris played in the Canadian Football League for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2009.

Morris was a versatile, all-round player during his four seasons as a Red Raider wide receiver (2005-08). He caught 184 passes for 1,965 yards and 19 touchdowns over his four seasons, the majority of which came during his final two years. Morris concluded his collegiate career as one of four players in NCAA FBS history to be part of multiple receiving trios where each player recorded at least 60 receptions in a season.

Morris was also instrumental as Tech’s primary punt returner the final two seasons, where he averaged over 10 yards per return. He was named to the All-Big 12 second team as a punt returner by the Fort Worth Star Telegram following his senior campaign. He was also a member of the 2007 Academic All-Big 12 first team.

Morris arrived at Tech after a stellar prep career at Shallowater High School, where he was named the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal All-South Plains Super Team Offensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2003. He finished with 926 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns that season, while throwing for another 1,926 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Morris received his bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies from Texas Tech in 2008. He and his wife, Maggie, have a son, Jack.

UIW Quick Facts

TEXAS TIES Eric Morris played his high school and collegiate football in Texas, at Shallowater High and Texas Tech University. He coached at Texas Tech and the University of Houston. His only two non-Texas football gigs were one year as a player for the Saskatchewan Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League and one year as an assistant coach at Washington State.

TEXAS TIES: ASSISTANT COACHESOnly one of Eric Morris’ 11 position coaches/coordinators does not have a Texas background as either a player, coach, scholar, or native-born son.

UIW VERSUS THE MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCEThis will be the second time that UIW has played a Mountain West Conference member in football. The Cardinals fell at Fresno State, 66-0, in the 2017 season opener (Sept. 2).

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT• The Lobos were 3-9 overall in 2017. They were led by Tyrone Owens, who rushed for

801 yards in 12 games. Owens is a redshirt senior in 2018.• This will be Bob Davie’s 12th opening game as a collegiate head coach. He is 8-3 in

season-opening games. • Bob Davie has Texas football ties. A native Pennsylvanian, Davie spent nine seasons

in College Station coaching at Texas A&M. He was the outside linebackers’ coach from 1985-88 and defensive coordinator from 1989-1993.

UIW VERSUS FBS OPPONENTSThis will be the first season in which UIW plays two Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents. After New Mexico, the Cardinals follow with a game at North Texas on Sept. 8.

NO GRASS FOR THE CARDINAL GRIDDERSWith this summer’s installation of new Field Turf at UIW’s Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium, the Cardinals boast the newest artificial playing surface in the Southland Conference. All 11 of UIW’s games this season will be played on synthetic turf. Saturday, the Cardinals challenge the Lobos on UNM’s Field Turf at Dreamstyle Stadium.

HIGH ALTITUDE ENCOUNTERDreamstyle Stadium sits at an altitude of 5,100 feet above sea level, the highest elevation at which a UIW team will have played a football game in program history. The previous maximum game day elevation was 4,100 feet against the UTEP in the Sun Bowl during the 2015 season. In 2011, the Cardinals played at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas, at an altitude of 3,500 feet.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERSWhen new UIW head football coach Eric Morris held spring football drills in March, he had a roster that numbered in the sixties. When fall drills began in August, those numbers had increased to 105. The new roster included a 20-player recruiting class announced on Feb. 7 (19 high school prospects and one transfer), plus numerous recruited and walk-on players who joined the team later.

MAKING THE GRADESince UIW head coach Eric Morris took charge of the Cardinal football team in December 2017, his student-athletes have increased the team GPA -- previously under a 2.5 -- through hard work and dedication. The emphasis that Morris and his assistant coaches placed on classroom attentiveness paid off in one semester. When spring semester grades arrived in late May, the team achieved a collective GPA of 3.2.
