TERRA BERARDINGAIl territorio della Berarden-ga è uno degli antichi inse-diamenti franco-longobardi della provincia senese. Il suo nome, “berardenga” o “berardinga”, trae origine infatti da Berardo, nobile di stirpe franca, che nella seconda metà del X secolo fu signore di queste terre. Rispetto agli altri insedia-menti antichi Castelnuovo gode tuttavia di un’ecce-zionale particolarità: grazie alla vicinanza con Siena ed alla dolcezza e ricchezza del suo contado, il centro e le terre circostanti non sono mai stati abbando-nati. Così, pur cambiando

volto nel corso del tempo, il capoluogo ha mantenuto le tracce di questo lungo passato, che un occhio attento può riscoprire.A questo obbiettivo mira il primo itinerario proposto: seguire lentamente il filo della storia.Si parte dalla torre dell’orologio, un tempo torre di controllo delle mura del castello, dalla cui cima si può abbracciare con lo sguardo il territorio della Berardenga e la sua estensione. Poi, passando attraverso le vie storiche del vecchio maniero, visite-remo il Palazzo Comunale

per giungere infine a Villa Chigi Saracini che sullo scorcio del ‘700 cambiò radicalmente l’aspetto del paese.

The Berardenga area is one of the oldest French-Lombard settlements in the province of Siena. Its name, “berardenga” or “berardinga”, in fact, derives from Berardo, a nobleman of French an-cestry, who in the second half of the tenth century was the lord of these lands. But compared with other ancient settlements, Castelnuovo enjoys an outstanding particularity: owing to its closeness to Siena and its gentle and rich countryside, the town and the surrounding lands have never been abando-

ned. So, while changing face over the course of time, the town has retained the traces of its long past, which an attentive eye can rediscover.The first itinerary proposed intends to do just this: slowly follow the strands of history.Departure from the clock tower, once a control tower of the castle walls, with a view from the top that embraces the whole Berar-denga area. Then, passing through the historical streets of the old castle, we will visit the Town Hall and lastly reach Villa Chigi

Saracini, which, at the end of the eighteenth century, radically changed the town’s appearance.

“MICAT IN VERTICE”: LA FAMIGLIA CHIGI SARACINI

Galgano, Alessandro, Guido: sono questi i nomi di alcune dei più grandi personaggi a cui si lega la storia e la vita di Castelnuovo e tutti sono conti, padri, figli, nipoti della famiglia Chigi Saracini. La ricca e potente famiglia di mercanti e banchieri, di antica origine germanica, così abili da essere scelti dai Papi fin dal Rinascimen-to possedeva nel contado di Castelnuovo una fattoria, detta della Madonna di Provenzano ed oggi Fattorie Chigi. Intorno all’ultimo quarto del ‘700 l’eclettico, colto, amante dell’arte conte Galgano, gran ciambellano alla corte dei Lorena, decise di far costruire nei pressi della fattoria una grande

residenza estiva, una villa, che fosse circondata da un parco magnifico e in cui la famiglia potesse trascorrere la stagione calda, ospitare gli amici ed i personaggi eminenti, mostrare il proprio potere ed il proprio lustro. Iniziarono così i lavori e parallelamente un progres-sivo acquisto dei terreni e di parte dell’antico castello che cambiò profondamente il volto dell’abitato. Da allora sempre il rapporto fra la famiglia ed il paese è diventato più stretto, tanto che la storia dell’una si in-treccia con quella dell’altro. Ai conti spetta la costruzio-ne delle principali chiese ed oratori, nelle loro fattorie trovava lavoro la gente

del borgo, nei loro giardini arrivavano artisti, musicisti, personaggi eccellenti che portavano vita e monda-nità, ed ancora oggi molti ricordano l’ultimo conte, Guido, ed il suo amore per la musica. Così, in questo itinerario il visitatore potrà conoscere questa famiglia tramite un amico comune: Castelnuovo Berardenga. Attraverso le chiese del borgo, passeggiando poi per i viali del parco della Villa, raggiungerà infine le fattorie Chigi Saracini dove potrà gustare del buon vino, ma anche respirare la storia di questa antica e nobile casata senese.

Galgano, Alessandro, Guido: these are the names of some of the greatest figu-res with which the history and life of Castelnuovo are associated and they are all earls, fathers, sons and grandchildren of the Chigi Saracini family. The rich and powerful family of merchants and bankers of ancient Germanic origin, so able as to be chosen by the Popes ever since the Renaissance, owned a farm in the Castelnuovo countryside, known as Madonna di Provenzano and now Fattorie Chigi. Around the last quarter of the eighteenth century, the eclectic, well-educated, very fond of art, earl Galga-

no, lord chamberlain at the Lorraines’ court, decided to have a large summer residence built near the farm. A villa, surrounded by a magnificent park, where the family could spend the summer months, host their friends and eminent characters, display their power and their prestige. So the works started and in parallel the lands and part of the ancient castle were gradually purchased, which profoundly changed the appearance of the area. Since then, the relationship between the family and the town became so increasin-gly close, that their stories interwove with one another. It was the earls’ duty to bu-

ild the main churches and oratories, the townspeople found work on their farms, artists, musicians, outstan-ding characters arrived at their gardens, bringing life and worldliness, and still today many remember the last earl Guido, and his fondness for music. So, in this itinerary the visitor will learn about this family through a mutual friend: Castelnuovo Berar-denga. Through the village churches, the paths of the Villa’s park will lead you to the Chigi Saracini farmhou-ses, where you will be able to taste good wine, but also breathe the history of this ancient and noble Siena family.

PAESAGGIO E VISIONE

La dolcezza delle colline, la varietà di flora e di fauna, i poderi, i vigneti odorosi, gli oliveti ed i pioppi, le strade bianche, le ville con i loro giardini…sono solo alcuni elementi che contribuiscono a quella famosa suggestione che la terra berardinga riesce a creare. Una suggestione che Castelnuovo racchiu-de come in uno scrigno. A pochi passi dal centro storico si trova non a caso, il Museo del Paesaggio,

luogo pensato per favorire nel visitatore una riflessio-ne più profonda e critica sul termine “paesaggio” e sul territorio nel quale ci si trova. Da qui ci si dirigerà verso Villa Chigi Saracini per esplorare lo splendido parco romantico. Usciti dalla villa si arriverà poi alla torre dell’orologio dalla cui sommità si potrà am-mirare a perdita d’occhio la campagna ed il contado dal Chianti alle Crete.

The gently rolling hills, the variety of flora and fauna, the farmhouses, the fragrant vineyards, the olive groves and the poplar trees, the white roads, the villas with their gardens…are only a few of the things that contribute to that famous fascination that the Berardenga countryside exerts. A beauty that Ca-stelnuovo treasures dearly. Near the old town centre, not by chance there is the Museo del Paesaggio

[Landscape Museum], devised to help the visitor in a deeper, more critical reflection on the term “landscape” and on the surrounding area. From here, we will head towards Villa Chigi Saracini to explore the beautiful, ro-mantic park. After leaving the villa, we then reach the clock tower from the top of which we could enjoy a breathtaking view of the whole countryside from Chianti to the Siena Crete.

L’antico paese di Castel-nuovo sorge al centro della “terra Berardinga”, quel vasto territorio apparte-nuto fin dal X secolo ai discendenti della famiglia di stirpe franca degli Ugur-geri. La fondazione vera e propria di Castelnuovo però fu iniziativa della Repubblica di Siena, il cui Consiglio Generale delibe-rò nel 1366 la costruzione del “Castel Nuovo”, un nuovo castello, presidio militare della Repubblica in una posizione strategica ai confini del contado. Ancora oggi il paese mantiene

questa antica memoria e risulta difatti diviso in due parti: quella alta del Castello e quella bassa del Borgo. Dopo la disfatta senese nella guerra contro Firenze, il paese subì un progressivo degradamento che tuttavia si arrestò sullo scorcio della metà del Settecento, in seguito alla generale tendenza delle famiglie senesi a spostare le proprie residenze nelle campagne, almeno per i periodi estivi. Lo sviluppo di Castelnuovo fu ad opera dei conti Chigi Saracini. Anzitutto i vasti possedi-

menti della famiglia furono riorganizzati intorno alla fattoria della “Madonna di Provenzano” (oggi Fattorie Chigi Saracini) subito fuori il borgo abitato. Ma fu il conte Galgano Saracini a dare una vera svolta ai lavori, promuovendo la costruzione della Villa e del vasto parco annesso. Nel corso dell’Ottocento i lavori architettonici di pregio continuarono fino alla costruzione del Palaz-zo Comunale agli inizi del secolo scorso.

The historical town of Castelnuovo stands at the centre of “terra Berardin-ga”, a vast area which since the tenth century be-longed to the descendents of the Ugurgeri, a family of French origin. However, the actual foundation of Ca-stelnuovo was an initiative of the Republic of Siena, whose General Council de-liberated the construction of “Castel Nuovo” in 1366, a new castle, a military garrison of the Republic in a strategic location at the borders of the area. Still today, the town holds

this ancient memory. In fact it is divided in two: the upper part with the Castle and the lower part with the village. After the defeat of Siena in the war against Florence, the town underwent a gradual de-terioration, which ceased towards the end of the mid eighteenth century, following the general ten-dency of the Siena families to move their residences to the countryside, at least for the summer. Castelnuovo was develo-ped by the Chigi Saracini earls. First of all the vast

possessions of the family were reorganised around the “Madonna di Proven-zano” farm (now the Chigi Saracini Farmhouses) just outside the inhabited area. But it was earl Galgano Saracini who marked the real turning point, ordering the construction of the Villa and its vast park. During the nineteenth cen-tury the valuable architec-tural works continued up to the construction of the Town Hall at the beginning of last century.

TORRE DELL’OROLOGIO

La torre civica o dell’orolo-gio è l’unica torre rimasta delle sette costruite dal 1526 a difesa del castello. Nel 1763 vi fu collocato un primo orologio della cui manutenzione si occupò alla fine dell’Ottocen-to Vitaliano Porcellotti. Questo nel 1896 realizzò su commissione comunale l’orologio nuovo.La torre attuale dai caratteri settecenteschi è a pianta rettangolare coperta a terrazza, e mostra sul prospetto principale lo stemma di Castelnuovo. Al piano terra

una grande apertura ad arco che delimita il vano, coperto con volta a botte in mattoni disposti a spina di pesce, costituiva l’accesso all’interno del borgo antico. Al primo piano si accede mediante una scala in pie-tra situata in un ambiente adiacente la torre; da qui un’altra scala in muratura sostenuta da travi in legno conduce al secondo piano dove sono sistemati il vecchio orologio e il mec-canismo di quello attuale, mentre una scala a pioli in ferro dà accesso alla terrazza di copertura.

The town or clock tower is the only tower still standing of the seven built since 1526 to defend the castle. The first clock was installed in 1763 and its upkeep was taken care of by Vitaliano Porcellotti until the end of the nineteenth century. In 1896 he made the new one ordered by the town council.The present tower with its eighteenth century characters is rectangular with a terraced roof and the main façade bears the Castelnuovo coat of arms. On the ground floor a large

archway delineating the tower base, covered by a barrel vault made of bricks arranged in herringbone pattern formed the entran-ce to the ancient village. Access to the first floor is gained through a stone staircase in a building next to the tower. From here, another masonry stairca-se supported by wooden beams leads to the second floor, where the old clock and the movements of the present one are placed, whilst an iron ladder leads to the terrace roof.

TABERNACOLO SUL LUOGO DEL RITROVAMENTO DELL’IMMAGINE DI MARIA SANTISSIMA DEL PATROCINIO

Una delle immagini votive più venerate fin da tempi antichi dalla comunità di Castelnuovo è sicuramente quella in terracotta policro-ma di Maria Santissima del Patrocinio. Intorno alla de-vozione castelnovina verso quest’immagine fu fonda-ta alla fine del Cinquecento una compagnia laicale che andò ad unirsi alla già esi-stente compagnia di San Sebastiano. Durante il XVI secolo tuttavia Castelnuovo attraversò un periodo di grande vessazione a causa della guerra tra Siena e Firenze. A causa di questo

l’immagine scomparve per lungo tempo, rima-nendo sepolta sotto le rovine dell’antico castello. Alla fine del Cinquecento però un gruppo di giova-ni in scorribanda tra gli sterpi ed i rovi del torrione diroccato la ritrovò. Subito fu deciso di edificare sul luogo del ritrovamento un tabernacolo dove custo-dire la preziosa tavoletta, che infatti lì rimase fino al 1860, quando fu spostata all’interno della chiesa della compagnia laicale. Ancora oggi tuttavia è visibile il tabernacolo dal

quale si apre l’accesso ad uno dei più suggestivi e caratteristici vicoli del centro storico.

Ever since ancient times, one of the most venera-ted votive images by the Castelnuovo community is surely the one of Holy Mary of Patronage made of polychrome terracotta. Out of the devotion of the Castelnuovo people to this figure, a lay society was founded at the end of the sixteenth century, which joined the already existing society of St. Sebastiano. However, during the sixte-enth century Castelnuovo went through a period of great oppression because of the war between Siena

and Florence. Owing to this, the image disappea-red for a long time, buried under the ruins of the old castle. But at the end of the sixteenth century, a group of youths rambling among the scrubland and brambles of the ruined tower found it again. It was immediately decided to build a tabernacle whe-re it had been found to keep the precious figure, which indeed remained there until 1860, when it was moved inside the lay society’s church. But the tabernacle, from which

access opens onto one of the most suggestive and characteristic alleyways of the old town centre, is still there to this day.

La costruzione dell’attuale chiesa si deve all’iniziativa del conte Alessandro Sara-cini. L’edificio originario fu infatti demolito per volere degli stessi Saracini che sul finire del Settecento entrarono in possesso della canonica di San Giu-sto. Il conte Alessandro si impegnò allora con la co-munità per dotarla di una nuova chiesa parrocchiale e realizzare a sue spese la nuova basilica intitolata ai Santi Giusto e Clemente.La costruzione intrapresa nel 1843 su progetto di Agostino Fantastici fu conclusa nel 1846. Della nuova chiesa la famiglia mantenne, oltre alla pro-

prietà, l’uso esclusivo della cappella della Madonna del Rosario sul cui altare fu posta la tavola di Giovanni Di Paolo (1426) raffiguran-te la Madonna del Rosario, già all’Oratorio di San Clemente.L’edificio è a croce greca terminante con l’abside. La facciata neoclassica è caratterizzata dal nartece a quattro colonne con capitelli ionici e frontone triangolare; il campanile a vela, in mattoni, è posto lateralmente sulla sommità di uno dei bracci. All’inter-no è possibile notare vari tipi di copertura a volte: a vela su archi a tutto sesto nella crociera, a botte

lunettata nei bracci laterali, a mezze volte a ombrello nell’abside e nell’ingres-so. Si inseriscono poi ai lati della costruzione la cappella Chigi Saracini e la sagrestia, mentre in controfacciata è collocata l’orchestra e l’organo rea-lizzato nel 1842 dai fratelli Agati. La chiesa ospita in-fine alcuni dipinti di pregio: la già ricordata tavola di Giovanni Di Paolo, una tela con la Deposizione di Ales-sandro Casolari sull’altare di sinistra ed una Sacra Famiglia di Francesco Nasini a decorazione di uno dei confessionali.

its construction to the initiative of earl Ales-sandro Saracini. In fact, the original building was demolished according to the will of the same Sara-cini family, who in the late eighteenth century came into possession of the pre-sbytery of St. Giusto. Then earl Alessandro pledged to provide the community with a new parish church and build the new basilica dedicated to St. Giusto and St. Clemente at his own expense.Construction began in 1843 to a project by Agostino Fantastici and ended in 1846. Of the new church, in addition to

the ownership, the family retained the exclusive use of the chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary, where the painting of the Virgin of the Rosary by Giovanni di Pa-olo (1426), formerly in the oratory of St. Clemente, was placed on the altar.The building is a Greek cross ending with the apse. The neoclassical façade features a four columns narthex with Ionic capitals and triangular pediment; the brick bell gable is set at the side on the top of one of the arms. Inside there are various types of vaults: ribbed on round arches in the cross, lunette barrel in the side

arms, half umbrella vaults in the apse and entrance. At the sides of the building there are the Chigi Saracini chapel and the sacristy, while the counter-façade houses the orchestra and the organ made in 1842 by the Agati brothers. Lastly, the church has some valuable paintings: the above mentioned work by Giovanni Di Paolo, a canvas with the Deposition by Alessandro Casolari on the left altar and a Holy Family by Francesco Nasini decorating one of the con-fessionals.

CHIESA DELLA COMPAGNIA DI MARIA SS. DEL PATROCI-NIO E ORATORIO DELLA COMPAGNIA DI SAN SEBASTIANO

La Compagnia di Maria Santissima del Patrocinio e San Sebastiano Martire è una delle più antiche com-pagnie laicali della Diocesi di Arezzo in territorio sene-se, e difatti già esisteva nel 1575 sotto il titolo di San Sebastiano.Il suo originario oratorio si trovava entro le mura del castello, ma sul finire del Settecento dovette essere chiuso a causa delle catti-ve condizioni dello stabile. Fu allora che su iniziativa del conte Galgano Saraci-ni, la compagnia si spostò nella cappella gentilizia

della nobile famiglia sene-se. Qui lo stesso Galgano fece collocare l’immagine in terracotta policroma di Santa Maria del Patrocinio.La costruzione di una nuova chiesa fu stabilita dal consiglio della Compa-gnia nel 1849 e conclusa, dopo varie vicissitudini, nel 1874. Di una ventina d’an-ni successiva fu invece la decisione di costruire al fianco della chiesa un ora-torio che venne terminato intorno al 1930 insieme al campanile.All’interno la chiesa pre-senta un impianto a croce

latina con transetto occu-pato da cappelle laterali; la copertura è a volte delimi-tate da archi a tutto sesto e sostenuta da semipilastri addossati. Elementi di rilievo sono certamente la bussola lignea all’ingresso, l’orchestra con il parapet-to decorato a stucchi, la balaustra in travertino che delimita la zona presbite-riale (realizzata nel 1950 in sostituzione di quella precedente in legno) ed infine l’altare maggiore, in travertino, che ancora con-serva la venerata Madonna in terracotta.

The Society of Holy Mary of Patronage and St. Seba-stiano is one of the oldest lay societies in the Diocese of Arezzo in the Siena area and in fact it already existed in 1575 under the name of St. Sebastiano.Its original oratory was within the castle walls, but in the late eighteenth century it had to be closed because of the bad condi-tions of the building. It was then, that on the initiative of earl Galgano Saracini, the society moved to the aristocratic chapel of the noble Siena family. Here, it

was Galgano himself who had the polychrome terra-cotta image of Holy Mary of the Patronage placed.The construction of a new church was established by the council of the Society in 1849 and ended, after various events, in 1874. About twenty years later came the decision to build an oratory at the side of the church, which was completed in around 1930 together with the bell tower.Inside, the church has a Latin cross structure with transept occupied by side

chapels; the vaulting is delineated by round arches and supported by leaning half columns. Important items are certainly the wooden alms box at the entrance, the orchestra with the stuccoed parapet, the travertine balustrade that delineates the presb-yteral area (made in 1950 to replace the wooden one) and lastly the high altar, made of travertine, which still holds the venerated terracotta Virgin.

Il Museo del Paesaggio è situato in un’area rappre-sentativa di uno dei più tipici paesaggi senesi ed italiani, com’è quello di Castelnuovo Berardenga, alle estreme propaggini meridionali del Chianti e in prossimità delle Crete senesi. L’intento che ha guidato la realizzazione del museo è di favorire nel pubblico la consapevolezza critica di un territorio pre-stigioso come quello se-nese (ma tendenzialmente di qualsiasi territorio), proponendo una riflessione sul termine “paesaggio”. In effetti l’incrociarsi nel

termine di diversi signi-ficati e l’uso di esso di saperi diversi ( discipline storico-artistiche, naturali-stiche, geografia culturale, antropologia sociale...) consentono un’interpre-tazione del territorio nella quale la coerenza va di pari passo con la ricchezza di sfaccettature. Si tratta dunque di un museo in cui la componente scientifico-didattica prevale: esso si caratterizza per la presenza preponderante di dispositivi museali con-sueti per i musei scientifici, quali i pannelli illustrativi fotografici, grafici, testuali

sono presenti anche alcuni filmati su temi specifici. La logica del percorso musea-le è costruire la riflessione sul paesaggio con il pro-cedimento che di volta in volta sembra più efficace, partendo dai significati del paesaggio come ci sono stati storicamente conse-gnati, per farne occasione di riflessione e approfon-dimento; ovvero mettendo alla prova ciascuno di tali significati per approfondire elementi specifici di quello che si suole definire terri-torio, e di cui il paesaggio si può considerare la forma visibile.

The Landscape Museum is located in an area that represents one of the most typical Siena and Italian landscapes, like the one of Castelnuovo Berardenga, at the extreme southern offshoots of the Chianti area and near the Siena Crete. The intention behind the development of the museum is to enhance the public’s critical awareness of a prestigious territory like Siena’s (but basically of any territory), proposing a reflection on the word “landscape”. In fact the mingling of different mea-nings and its use in diffe-

rent branches of know-ledge (historical-artistic and naturalist disciplines, cultural geography, social anthropology...) allow an interpretation of the territory in which consi-stency goes hand in hand with the wealth of facets. In any case it is a museum in which the scientific-educational part prevails: it is characterised by the preponderant presence of the usual museum devices for scientific museums, like illustrative photogra-phic, graphic and text panels and there is also film footage on specific

themes. The logic of the museum route is to build reflection on the landscape with the procedure that seems more effective each time, starting from the meanings of the landscape as they have been histori-cally handed down to us, to make them become an opportunity for reflection and in-depth study; in other words, putting each of these meanings to the test to further investigate specific elements that usually define the territory and of which the landsca-pe can be considered the visible form.

Il 13 ottobre 1896 ebbe inizio l’opera di amplia-mento e di rifacimento del Palazzo Comunale dovuta all’iniziativa dell’allora amministratore comunale Guelfo Guelfi. A tale data risale infatti la proposta per l’acquisto da parte del Co-mune di un’abitazione del farmacista Amos Fineschi adiacente all’allora Palazzo Pubblico, conclusa con il contratto di acquisto il 16 novembre 1897. I lavori, iniziati immediatamente, terminarono nel 1902 ma di essi non conosciamo né il progetto né il progettista.L’edificio rivela, coerente-

mente con la destinazione d’uso del luogo, uno stile derivato dall’architettura funzionale ottocentesca. La facciata, in bugnato al livello inferiore e ad intonaco nei piani superio-ri, è organizzata secondo criteri di simmetria. Così uno stesso ordine è attuato sia all’esterno che all’interno. Perla del Palazzo è la sala consiliare situata al secondo piano, che presenta una contro soffittatura a volta stuccata e decorata con delicati motivi floreali, greche di vari colori arricchite da due stemmi di Castelnuovo,

uno con l’ippogrifo, l’altro con le sette torri.

On October 13th, 1896, the works began to extend and restore the Town Hall through the initiative of the then municipal administra-tor Guelfo Guelfi. In fact the proposal made by the town council to purchase a home belonging to the apothecary Amos Fine-schi, adjacent to the then Town hall, dates back to that time. The proposal concluded with the deed of purchase on November 16th, 1897. The works began immediately and ended in 1902 but we do not know the project or the designer.

Consistently with its purpo-se, the building reveals a style derived from nine-teenth century functional architecture. The façade, rusticated at the lower level and plastered in the upper floors, is organised according to symmetric criteria. The same order is implemented both outside and inside. The gem of the building is the council chamber on the second floor, which has a stuccoed ceiling decorated with de-licate floral motifs, fretting in various colours enhan-ced by two Castelnuovo coats of arms, one with the

hippogryph and the other with the seven towers.

Emblema dell’ideale villa ottocentesca, imponente sul borgo si erge Villa Chigi Saracini, residenza estiva dell’antica casata senese, fortemente voluta dal conte Galgano e profondamente vissuta dall’ultimo conte Guido. La sua costruzione, insieme a quella del vasto parco si collocano in un arco di tempo fra il 1820 e il 1840. La villa in stile neoclassico si sviluppa su tre piani: il pian terreno rive-stito a bugnato, gli altri due intonacati. Sui due prospetti principali, il nord e il sud, si aprono invece i due portali d’ingresso, su ognuno dei quali Galgano volle gli stemmi della propria casata: sulla facciata nord quello dei Chigi Della Rovere, su quella sud quello dei Saraci-ni Marescotti. Ma vera perla della villa è il parco roman-

tico, progettato nel 1834 dall’architetto, scenografo e scultore senese Agostino Fantastici. Concepito come un cosmo in miniatura for-giato dalle mani dell’uomo, lungo i suoi viali si passa dal laghetto al giardino pensile, dalle piante esotiche a quelle del Nord America e dell’Estremo Oriente, dalla limonaia al bosco, fra lecci, faggi, querce, cedri d’Atlante, siepi di bosso. Proprio di fronte all’ingresso della villa si trova un piccolo giardino all’italiana, in cui le gentildonne potessero frescheggiare fra aiuole di rose e piante aromatiche, come in uso all’epoca, ed al centro la grande siepe di bosso forgiata a scrivere il motto della famiglia: micat in vertice. In fondo due rampe di scale conducono ad un piccolo Kaffeehaus

neoclassico che si apre sul vasto parco. Questa parte, su ispirazione dei giardini all’inglese, ha un aspetto volutamente più selvaggio, selvatico, ma in realtà è un insieme armonico, sapien-temente studiato, dove nulla è casuale, ma è piegato al volere dell’uomo. In questa parte del giardino, imma-giniamo Galgano e gli altri gentiluomini cavalcare fra i viali, ammirare le piante esotiche fatte giungere da vari angoli della terra o dono di illustri personaggi. Tuttavia l’aspetto attuale non rispecchia fedelmente il progetto originale. Alcune modifiche furono infatti volute dall’ultimo conte Guido fondatore dell’Acca-demia Musicale Chigiana. L’ amore per la musica ispirò il conte che decise di rendere omaggio ai grandi artisti e

ai grandi musicisti da lui amati collocando nel parco ora qua ora là busti e statue di questi personaggi, come in una ideale galleria della musica.

The emblem of the ideal nineteenth century villa, imposing over the village stands Villa Chigi Saracini, the summer residence of the ancient Siena family, strongly desired by earl Galgano and intensely lived by the last earl Guido. Its construction, together with that of the large park, dates back to a period of time between 1820 and 1840. The villa in neoclassical style is developed on three floors: the ground floor is rusticated and the other two are plastered. The two entrance gateways open onto the main façades, north and south. On each of them Galgano wanted his family’s coats of arms: on the northern façade the one of the Chigi Della Rovere

family and on the southern façade the one of the Sara-cini Marescotti family. But the real gem of the villa is the romantic park, designed in 1834 by the Siena ar-chitect, stage designer and sculptor Agostino Fantastici. Conceived as a miniature cosmos forged by the hands of man, its pathways lead from the lake to the hanging garden, from exotic plants to those from North America and the Far East, from the lemon grove to the wood, among holm-oaks, beech-trees, oak-trees, cedars and box hedges. Right in front of the villa entrance is a small Italian garden where the ladies could enjoy the cool air among rose beds and aromatic plants, according to the custom of the times. In the centre there is the large box hedge shaped to write the family motto: micat in vertice. At the bottom, two flights of stairs lead to the small neoclassical Kaffeehaus, which opens

onto the vast park. This part, inspired by English gardens, has an intentionally wilder appearance, but in truth it is a harmonic, carefully designed complex, where nothing is fortuitous, but bent to the will of man. In this part of the gar-den, we imagine Galgano and the other gentlemen riding along the pathways, admiring the exotic plants brought from the different corners of the earth or gifts from illustrious people. But the present appearance does not faithfully reflect the original project. In fact, some changes were made by the last earl, Guido, the founder of the Chigiana Mu-sical Academy. The love for music inspired the earl who decided to pay tribute to the great artists and musicians he loved placing their busts and statues here and there on the grounds, as in an ideal music gallery.

Anche il territorio di Siena e di conseguenza quello di Castelnuovo furono coin-volti all’inizio dell’Ottocento dalla grande espansione dell’Impero napoleonico che comportò la conquista francese del Granducato di Toscana. I vasti territori italiani conquistati dai francesi furono divisi in dipartimenti e Siena era il capoluogo di uno di questi organismi di ammini-strazione territoriale: il dipartimento dell’Ombrone, fondato il 24 maggio 1808 che comprendeva le pro-vincie di Siena, Grosseto e parte di quella di Arezzo.

Nei punti nevralgici di que-sto vasto territorio (dove si trovavano guarnigioni e presidi) furono poste delle colonne celebrative e se-gnaletiche. Nei dintorni di Siena ancora oggi troviamo ben quattro colonne, ad indicare le direzioni verso le quali si estendeva il di-partimento: una in località Montarrenti, che indicava la direzione nord, una in località Colonna del Grillo, che indicava il limite sud, una prossima al centro, vicino alla Porta di san Marco ad indicare l’ovest e quella di Castelnuovo che indicava l’est. Ancora oggi

la colonna del tempo di Napoleone si erge di fronte al Palazzo Comunale a ricordo della dominazione francese.

Also the Siena area, and consequently the Castel-nuovo one, were involved at the beginning of the nineteenth century by the great expansion of the Napoleonic Empire, which saw the French conquest of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The vast Italian territories conquered by the French were divided into departments and Siena was the chief town of one of these territorial administration organisa-tions: the department of Ombrone, established on May 24th, 1808, included the provinces of Siena,

Grosseto and part of the province of Arezzo. In the nerve centres of this vast territory (where garrisons and defensive structures were placed) celebratory and sign columns were erected. In the Siena surroundings we still find as many as four columns, which indicate the direc-tions in which the depart-ment extended: one in Montarrenti, which pointed north, one in Colonna del Grillo, which indicated the southern border, one near the centre, near Porta di San Marco indicating the west and the one in Caste-

lnuovo, which pointed east. Still today the column of Napoleon’s days stands in front of the Town Hall as a reminder of French rule.

L’Associazione Quinquatrus cura progetti di varia natura (workshop, corsi, conferenze, fiere, feste, mostre, etc.) per promuovere attività sociali e culturali legate alla “intelligen-za del saper fare” e far tornare in auge lo splendore sepolto di tutte quelle attività artigianali che vanno ormai scomparen-do. Far rivivere i raggi delle no-stre radici; questi gli obbiettivi dell’Associazione Quinquatrus, il cui nome ricorda l’antica fe-sta pagana dedicata a Miner-va, dea protettrice degli artisti, celebrata il quinto giorno dopo le Idi. Presso Quinquatrus è possibile trovare manufatti in legno e ferro battuto, oggetti in ceramica e travertino, ricami,

tessuti a telaio, piccoli oggetti ornamentali, ceste, graticci, prodotti di erboristeria ed ope-re di artisti locali. Chigi Saracini, il cui nome è legato ad alcune casate che si sono succedute nella proprie-tà fin dal XII secolo, si trova nel Comune di Castelnuovo Berardenga, a pochi chilometri da Siena. La tenuta, ubicata nel Chian-ti, si estende per circa 810 ettari, di cui 83 sono coltivati a prevalenza sangiovese, Merlot e Cabernet, con impianti specializzati, allevati a cordone speronato e guyot. La tenuta comprende inoltre, 8.000 piante d’olivo da cui si ricavano eccellenti olii extra-vergine d’oliva.

Chigi Saracini, whose name is linked to some of the families who have succeeded one another in the property since the 12th century, is in the Municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, a few kilometres from Siena. The estate, located in the Chianti area, extends for about 2,000 acres, 200 of which mainly grow Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet, with specialised spurred cordon and guyot growing systems. The estate also comprises 8,000 olive trees, which yield excellent extra virgin olive oils.
