The President’s Message

Brett Bacci

May 2018

Here we are into May and the driving season is heating up along with the weather

(hopefully). The month of May has us Drag Racing, the Lou Morabito High Mileage

Contest starting at the General Membership meeting and ending the month with a

lifesaving CPR course. At the May meeting there will be a “Social” with the club

supplying pizza and soft drinks. Please bring a dish to share with fellow club mem-

bers if you wish.

Just a reminder, your renewals are due June 1.

Our Annual Car Show is on June 17, 2017, Father’s Day. We’re looking for all of you

to support this car show in some way. Those ways can be by registering your car for

the car show, volunteering your time, promoting the show to your friends, peers

and others so that we have many spectators. Don’t forget that the discounted regis-

tration fee ends May 31 – so make it easy on yourself and register at the May mem-

bership meeting. As I mentioned in my April President’s letter, the main benefi-

ciary of this year’s car show will be Lake County Honor Flight. Last year we were

able to send 2 veterans on the flight and we hope to achieve at least that level and

hopefully more.

After 7 years of serving on the NSCC Board, with the past 2 years as President, I am

stepping away. I will still be attending events, hopefully hosting some events and

supporting the Club. I would like to thank the Board for their service and for work-

ing toward the goals that I had for the Club for the past 2 years. I would also like to

thank Pam Bacci and Gale Egle for their service as they are also stepping down at

this time. I would like to extend my best wishes to the new NSCC Board, I know

they will do a great job and continue to move the Club forward. It has been my

pleasure to serve as the President of NSCC for the past two years.

Brett

WHY SPRING DRIVING IS DANGEROUS

With winter fading into the background and better weather around the corner, you would think the roads would be safe again. Rainy days and flooding Spring rains brings slippery road conditions and flooding. According to the Feder-al Highway Administration, rain was a culprit of 46% of all weather related crash-es from 2005 to 2014, and wet pavement in general accounted for 73%. What makes rain and wet pavement so dangerous? For one, slippery roads reduce your cars handling and increases the distance it takes to stop (up to 4 times normal stopping distance). Big puddles can also cut down on tire traction and could lead to hydroplaning. Hail season Beware of hailstorms, particularly if you live in a hail-belt state. Even small hail-stones can shatter windshields, and raining balls of ice are never good for roads. Winter road wear and tear In many states, winter wreaks havoc on the roads (no kidding). Snow plows, salt, sand and the aftermath of ice can all leave roads a bit battered. Once snow melts away, expect to drive over new and bigger potholes. Animal activity Animals are incredibly active during the spring. Some are emerging from hiberna-tion, and other are entering mating season. This could mean animals are crossing roads and roaming around . Many animals especially deer, are most active at dawn or dusk. Do not overdrive those headlights. More bicycles on the road Spring also brings out cyclists and motorcyclist out of hibernation. Driving along-side cyclists can make traffic maneuvers, from turning right to parallel parking more dangerous.

SPRING DRIVING TIPS

Check your lights, since spring rain hinders driving visibility, make sure all your lights work, including headlights, taillights, backup, turn signals, parking and brake lights Replace your wiper blades, worn-out wiper blades may not be up to the task of clearing water away from your windshield. Check your tire pressure, harsh winter weather (for those who’s Corvette left the garage) can deflate your tires. Make sure you have enough air in them once spring rolls around. Proper inflation can mean better gas mpg. Slow down and drive carefully, the first few rainy days of spring can produce ex-ceptionally slippery roads due to oil and other leaked fluids mixing with rainwater, so slow down and increase your stopping distance when it’s raining. Keep your eyes peeled for bad road conditions, remember that harsh winter weath-er breeds potholes and other driving obstacles. Once gain keep your eyes open for animals and motorcyclists, they are both com-ing out of hibernation

Thank you to all of you that came out to support our veterans to escort them to and from the Milwaukee airport. NSCC’s support for Lake County Honor Flight is growing, and I hope it will continue. The veterans certainly deserve our support. On Friday morning, April 27, 2018, we had 9 mem-bers in 6 Corvettes show up in North Chicago at 3:45 in the morning. Or, as one member calls it “Oh-dark-thirty”. Along with about 30 motorcycles and many from law enforcement, we escorted the 23 veterans, 23 guardians and LCHF staff to Milwaukee airport. From the time we left North Chicago to when we entered the airport, we did not stop for anything, not once. NSCC member Pam Buckle (pictured below with her veteran) volunteered to be a guardian on LCHF #12. It’s quite an experience. I encourage any-one, veteran or not, to join us in the future. See all pictures.

On Sunday afternoon, the 29th of April, 14 members in 8 Corvettes met at the Wisconsin Visitors Center in Pleasant Prairie. We drove together to Milwaukee’s airport to bring the veterans back to North Chicago. We greet-ed the veterans in the terminal. They were greeted by a water salute on the tarmac by the fire department. After a lot of picture taking, we headed out-side to form the return escort. Along with the Corvettes, there were about 100 motorcycles and even more officers and military to help with traffic control. To enter the highway, the police blocked off traffic on all 3 lanes of Interstate 94 for the group to stay together. Even with all of the construc-tion in Wisconsin, we barely had to come to a complete stop all the way to North Chicago. The traffic control was excellent. After we arrived and parked in North Chicago, we greeted the veterans as they exited the bus. Many people spoke at the ceremony; the mayor of Winthrop Harbor among others. All in all it was a very emotional experience, whether you were a veteran on stage or someone in the audience.

Thank you again to all of the NSCC members who joined us over the week-end. The veterans earned and deserve all of our support. See all pictures.

Shown above are all of the veterans from Lake County Honor Flight #12.

Route 66 Red Carpet Corridor Festival

The caravan met up at the Omega restaurant and

made its way to Pontiac, IL, stopping at each

town along the route to get a magnet. Along the

way, they picked up several more cars and

dropped others. Two of us made it all the way to

Towanda, IL to pick up the last magnet.

See pictures.

We met 7 guys at the Polka Dot Drive-In in Braidwood, IL. They flew in

into Chicago from Holland, rented 6 Harley Davidson motorcycles and

were on their way to California along old Route 66. We saw them several

times during the day.
