President’s Message Sharon Smith

I missed both club events in January and will miss the run to the Mullin Automotive Museum this month due to family commitments, so I under-stand how life can sometimes take priority over Corvette fun. It is difficult when that happens, as you want to do both. So that is a good reason to have “do over’s” for some of our events. The visit to the Mullin Museum is a “do over”, but with its ever changing array of incredible automobiles that are also worthy to be called works of art, the museum’s collection continues to awe and amaze us. The Mullin is one of the best automotive museums, and we are fortunate to have it

in our backyard. Besides the automobiles, there are wonderful period pieces of art deco furniture and other collectibles. One of our favorite “do over’s” is the Occasional NASCAR Daytona 500 Party at Hib and Sandy’s. If you have not attended one of these events, you are missing a treat. Sandy searches far and wide to find perfect prizes for the person with the correct answers to incredibly brain challenging questions that she and Hib come up with about NASCAR trivia and stats. So get ready to cheer on your favorite driver and join us for a winning afternoon. When our group is together, everyone wins. Our new CCSB club year will start June 1. I encourage members to start thinking about participation in the

club as a board member. I will be asking for members to be part of a nominations committee for the board

election process. We have a wealth of talent among our membership that can be used to provide our mem-

bers with new activities and continued growth. Remember without “U” there is no Club

The plans for the Petersen Automotive Museum run started with us doing the regular tour. Then I found out they have extended the availability of an ex-clusive vault tour. I sent an email to those who had signed up and they all wanted to do the 90 minute vault tour for an additional $25 per person. The vault tour is far different from the tour and galleries upstairs. Inside, in the

space the size of a football field, the vault has 150 cars parked as if in a city lot. There are no special dis-plays with mannequins, velvet ropes and faux boulevards. The tours offer the chance for visitors to walk right up to a Ferrari given to Henry II by Enzo Ferrari, or a rare Jaguar XKSS formerly owned by actor Steve McQueen. No touching and no photography are allowed in the vault. Some of these cars have been in the upstairs galleries, but not for up close and personal looks like you get in the vault. There is good news and there is bad news. The good news is that I was able to secure a vault tour for our

group on Saturday, March 23 at 11 AM. The bad news is that there is a limit to the number of participants for

the vault tour and we are now at the maximum number allowed. Anyone who wishes to be added to the list to

go on the run and do the vault tour will be wait listed until such time as any of those already committed should

need to cancel. Total cost for the museum admission and vault tour is $33. After the vault tour we will have

some time to go upstairs to the main galleries to view the exhibits there before heading to Canter’s Deli on

Fairfax Ave. for lunch. If you did not sign up for this event and want to be wait listed, please see me at the

meeting or contact me by email at [email protected]. If you are currently signed up and need to

cancel, please let me know so I can open the spots to other members.

We have gotten this year off to a great start with two very enjoyable runs, first to Flat Bread Pizza in Los Alamos and just last weekend to Newhall to visit the William S. Hart Museum and Ranch. The day was a bit sketchy with the weather looking like it would not cooperate. However, as we turned onto the 126 the weather did the same. It was a beautiful ride through Santa Paula and a very nice day at the Ranch. I would like to thank Fred Markley for not shooting any of the bison at the ranch. I know it took a great deal of restraint but it seems they frown on that sort of thing. Lunch was great and thank you Jim Purcell for your suggestion. Thank you to Inge for being our photogra-pher for the day. Saturday February 9 Jim and Judy will be leading a run first to the Mullin Auto Museum (http://www.mullinautomotivemuseum.com/collection.html) which is a homage to the art deco and the machine age – eras that produced exquisite art and magnificent automo-

biles. The museum is home to the finest historic French automobiles from the Bugatti to the Voisin as well as significant and representative decorative art from the 1920s and 1930s. The current feature is La Vision de Voisin which pays tribute to Gabriel Voisin with an exhibition that shows this genius through his own words, and those of his growing list of admirers. After the museum Jim and Judy will lead us to brunch just off of Pa-cific Coast Highway. This should be a great run. Please join us if you can. If you will not be at the meeting please contact Jim directly. (See page 8 for more details) Also in February Hib and Sandy Halverson will be hosting the Daytona 500 party at their home in Goleta. Gotta pull for those blue bow ties. Upcoming events in March are the Warbirds Musuem (http://www.ewarbirds.org/) on the 2nd, Winos Gone Wild on the 16th and the Petersen Museum on the 23rd (http://petersen.org/) which is featuring the Corvette. Date Change: April 27th is Sharon’s Ladies run to the Vintage Fashion Show. Let’s keep things going strong.

Estrella Warbirds Museum Jim Purcell

We have a fascinating trip planned to the Estrella Warbirds Museum and Wood-

land Auto Display in Paso Robles on Saturday March 2, 2013. The Warbirds

Museum has an incredible collection of combat aircraft including an F/A-18 Hor-

net, F-16 Fighting Falcon, along with a wide variety of other fighter and attack jet

aircraft. There is even a MiG-15 that is still flown on occasion. If you want to test

your flying skills there is a real F/A-18 Flight Simulator where you can sit in a cockpit mock up and experience landing

on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier (or not!). If ground combat is your thing there is everything from an M-60 Tank to

numerous types of tactical combat vehicles. There is also an exhaustive collection of armament, munitions and mis-

siles of all sorts. The museum also serves as host to the remarkable Dick Woodland Automobile Collection that

includes many vintage classic cars, NASCAR and Indy race cars, and plenty of midget and sprint cars. As a special

treat for CCSB members we’ll have a chance to meet and talk with Jeanne Thiebaud, who is the Warbirds Museum

Coordinator and a true Corvette enthusiast. Besides owning 30 different Corvettes over the years, Jeanne was a pre-

vious owner of the infamous 1953 Corvette serial number #003. This is the oldest Corvette in existence and the very

first one ever sold by GM. A cold cut lunch will be catered on-site in the museum’s Glen Thomson Hall. The cost will

be approximately $20 including lunch and museum admission. Of course, what would a run to Paso Robles be without

at least one wine tasting experience? EOS winery is conveniently located near the museum for

those interested. This run will be setup as a day trip but with an optional overnight stay in Paso

Robles or Cambria for those inclined to make it a weekend get-away. For planning purposes please

let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in participating in this run, and if you would be

interested in the overnight option. Contact Jim Purcell at your earliest convenience to sign up for

this run.

Here is an update on the Motor Sports Park that is going to be constructed at the National Corvette Museum: Steady progress is being made on the Motor Sports Park. Last week the Museum received the final design. You can view the plans on their web-site: www.motorsportspark.org. The Museum has contracted for the preparation of the construction bid documents and those should be completed by May 1st.

Construction bid packets will then be mailed out to prospective and qualified construction/paving companies. Interested companies will have 30 days to submit their bids. All the bids should be back by mid-June. At that time, the NCM Motorsports Park Project Committee, along with their civil engineering firm and track designer will compare all the bids. The com-mittee will then make a recommendation to the full Board of Directors of what phases and/or combination bids to accept. The estimate of costs is $16,475,000 and the goal is to have the Grand Opening of the Motor Sports Park on Labor Day weekend during the 2014 caravan. Stay tuned for future updates.

This run to Monterey for the ALMS Race will be May 10-12. This is a major event and room availability, banquet tickets and Corvette Corral parking need to be secured early. I sent out an email to all members, followed by an update email with all the information you need to complete your lodging, banquet, and race arrangements. Several of you have contacted me to confirm your arrangements have been made. So here is the game plan. We will be driving up to Monterey, as a group, on Friday, May 10. It will be an early departure so we can arrive in time to go to the track for a few hours, check in to our hotel,

and then prepare to go to the Corvette Racing Banquet at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Monterey. Early Sat-urday morning, May 11, we head out to the track for race day. I recommend wearing Corvette attire to show our support for Corvette Racing. The race does not start until early afternoon, but the pre-race activities in the Corvette Corral, in the Paddock area, and vendor areas are a significant part of the race experience. The race itself goes into the evening hours. Sunday, May 12 will be a driving day to return to the Santa Barbara area. Please refer to my emails to make your

arrangements and let me know which

events you will be attending. Just an

FYI, although we are purchasing our race

tickets now, they will not be mailed by the

Mazda Raceway until closer to the event

as I recall. You will not receive tickets for

the Corvette Racing Banquet. Print out

your payment receipt and take it with you

to the banquet just in case verification is

necessary. More details will follow later

in the spring, but for now it is important

that you take care of the items above for

your participation. Let’s go racing.

FISHING VACATION DECEMBER 2012 -

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is the Fishing Capital

of the world, so off Rustie and I went. Rustie's

goal was to spend as much time as she could

with her daughter and grandchildren. My goal

was to bring home an Atlantic Sailfish. I

spent my energy deep sea fishing, bass fish-

ing and gator watching....but I'll be brief.

I chartered a beautiful 51 foot boat, named "Big Game". The boat was just for me, so I wouldn't have to

deal with other people interfering in my space. The Captain took the boat about one-mile off the Fort

Lauderdale Coast. The depth of the water was 240 feet. After five long hours of no action and sundown

coming fast, disappointment was setting in. All of a sudden, all H_ _ _ broke loose. I had hooked two Sail-

fish! I cut one loose and the fight was on…!

Finally, after fifty-five minutes of struggling, I overpowered the "Sail" and claimed victory. However, not be-fore I observed that the four fingers on my left hand were bloody....Big Deal....I still won the battle...the skin will grow back. My prized "Sail" weighed 106 lbs and measured 7' 2" (86 inches). Both Captains and the Taxider-mists informed me that this "Sail" was exceptional in size and weight. This fish is normally smaller in the Atlantic Ocean as opposed to the Pacific side. Normal size Sail fish, in Florida, is 5 to 6 feet and under 100 lbs. A little humor: My Sailfish has been given a name, which is "Rustie", named after my girlfriend. Why, because I caught the fish on her birthday (Dec. 13th) and she is also a keeper !! Her age is not to be re-vealed at this point. The next day Rustie's Son-In-Law asked if I wanted to go to the Everglades. Convinced this would be a thrill we hooked up his 18 Foot Bass Boat and headed to the glades. Since I have only seen the Florida Everglades on TV, I figured this would be an exciting adventure. "Boy Howdy" it was! We cruised slowly up and down the canals for about thirty miles. The canals were narrow, 25 feet wide at best with many channels only 15 feet wide. Soon we began seeing those BIG BLACK UGLY HUN-GRY GATORS slithering out of the bushes and into the black murky water. Their little beedy eyes appeared to be watching us. There were a couple of eight footers within six feet of us. That will tighten up your back-side; if you know what I mean? As the sun was going down it suddenly occurred to me that if we ran out of gas or had motor prob-lems, well pray for good luck to put it mildly, cause you could become gator bait. During our time in Florida the weather was perfect. It was a great adventure and in three months my

"Sailfish" will be mounted on the wall in my MAN CAVE next to the numerous other Big Game animals,

Bears, Elk, Deer, a Mountain Lion, etc. A dream come true, and another animal disappears from my Bucket

List. Tune in to see what's next on the walls and floor of my MAN CAVE.
