A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Fellow CCR Members,

! I imagine that just like my predecessors, as they faced the task of drafting a letter for our newsletter, more than once they thought, "What am I going to say this time !!!xx###!!!!!" Well, this time I am going to expound on the great events we have coming up, and then go for the OBVIOUS! You will see what I mean as we progress!

! And we do have some great activities ahead-they all should be in this newsletter. Please do your best to participate in as many of these as

you can. To all you newer members, come on out and enjoy. Your active participation will naturally lead to your bonding opportunities with our membership, and your discovery of what a family we truly are. You will also find that we are the greatest Corvette Club in the world!

! First up is the Bunny Run April 12. Cecile and Ed Custer have championed this cause for years-please come out and bring your bunnies. Also later in the day after the Bunny Run, on April 12 is the Swift Creek Mill Theatre event, generously hosted by the Murman's. I hope you have your tickets! Celebrate end of tax season with a cruise to Captain Billy's, hosted by Lori and Dave Dolan. Marcie and I love this event-be there! The RIR Corral is April 26 for the NASCAR Race. Bubba and Donna Carr do a great job leading this event. Tickets are selling out-and it is a bargain deal! Next we have the ZIP car show on May 10. This is an important sponsor of CCR, and we would like to see many of our members support this show. Ray Wells does a terrific job as our sponsor Ambassador to ZIp. So please make Ray look even better with your participation!

! Time for another paragraph so you can catch your breath. Ha! The Tank Museum Cruise on May 17, hosted by Rick Franklin, looks like a blast-TANKS Rick! Now, I am OD for the Corvettes at the Vets car show on Sunday, May 25. See the article in this newsletter. I have been to 3 out of 4 of these shows, and the Colonial Corvette Club does an awesome job! They are big supporters with their attendance at our Roundup, so would love to have you join us for this event!

! OK-we have gotten pretty far through the year, out to the end of May. Do we have it going on or what?  I have to mention two more events. These are the premiere events of the Corvette Club of Richmond! Our 18th Annual Roundup will be held Saturday, June 7 at Iron Bridge Sports Park. Plans are well underway-and we really need every member to support this effort. Bring your Corvette,

Page 4: April 2014 - Corvette Club of Richmond

4 ! April 2014! !

volunteer in some way to help, secure items from your favorite vendors and establishments that we can auction in our silent auction. This is an all hands on deck event! With your help it will be a success. Many thanks to all of you who have already volunteered. We have many long time standbys who help make this happen-thank you! The CCR Christmas Dinner Dance will be held December 6, Saturday night, at the Meadow Brook Country Club. This will be our fourth year at the Meadow Brook CC and they have done a fantastic job! Many thanks to Paul and Gayle Murman for enabling us to "party" at this venue. The band is booked-"The English Channel" will take you back in time to the Great British Music Invasion of the 1960's and '70's and beyond. It should be awesome! What else is awesome is that this year we will have a top of the line Buffet (rather than choice of a delicious plated dinner). This Club loves to travel on its stomach, and you will not be disappointed in the food, the venue, the terrific service of this club, or the band! Please put December 6 on your calendar now and plan to attend!

!As promised, it is time to go for the obvious! As some of you may have seen on the CCR Facebook page, our good member and predecessor Newsletter editor, Jeremy Welborn and I, had a pretty exciting weekend on Friday and Saturday, March 14 and 15. Jeremy picked up his brand new 2013 Grand Sport Heritage Edition Convertible in Detroit on Friday! Then he traveled to Columbus, Ohio to pick me up at the airport en route to pick up my new C7!  What a blast! We had a great time and each headed in opposite directions home! What a great day!

! They say life is a journey! I can think of no better way to make this journey than with my special gal in our Corvette! Right Paul? By the way, Save the wave!

Your CCR Buddy,

Kirby

WELCOME NEW CCR MEMBERS !!

Want to Become a CCR Member ?

! In 1960, a small group of Corvette enthusiasts began to gather on a regular basis for fun and fellowship. The first official Club meeting took place in July of 1961. CCR is the oldest Corvette club in Virginia with membership approaching 400. To be eligible for regular membership, you must be a person of good character and own a Corvette. You must attend at least one meeting or event. If you don’t own a Corvette, an “associate membership” is available. Associates can participate in all events and functions but have no voting rights. You’ll make good friends, have fun and learn more about Corvettes. Club meetings are at 7:30 p.m. on the second Friday of each month. After the meetings, there is usually a party where you can enjoy socializing with other club members.

! Annual dues are $25 for pilots or $35 for both the pilot and co-pilot (includes spouse, or significant other/child). A membership application can be found on the CCR website: www.corvetteclubofrichmond.com

10 ! April 2014! !

Although it was only two months ago, February 12th to be exact, that the words 'sinkhole' and 'Corvettes' and 'SkyDome' made headlines in the US and much of the world, the initial event and subsequent happenings at the National Corvette Museum have remained hot topics. While most of the coverage has focused on the floor and subterranean aspects of the SkyDome, previous visitors know that the walls of the structure have their own Corvette tales to tell. In addition to being the showplace for many pedigreed Corvettes, the structure is also home to the Corvette Hall of Fame. As shown in the

accompanying photo, the exposed steel framework circling the central spire contains likenesses and identification of the Hall of Famers who have been honored at a rate of three or four a year since 1998, four years after the NCM opened in September 1994.

! Those selected for inclusion in the Corvette Hall of Fame have some significant connection to the Corvette but beyond that, the variations are many. As might be expected, some of the earliest inductees were truly integral to the Corvette's very existence. These included the likes of Zora Duntov and Harley Earl, as well as many fifties GM Presidents, Chairmen, and Managers who either actively nurtured the project or at least allowed it to continue. Many have been pioneers in critical elements of Corvette design and marketing. And certainly many names from each decade included Corvette racers, both domestic and abroad. More recently several have been writers or editors of Corvette publications including technical topics. Others actually made their names with affiliations that provided time proven and well respected after market modifications or options. Check out a half dozen of the fifty-five faces and names that comprise the group thus far. Continued...

! And finally, the three individuals featured on the cover of the Mar/Apr edition of America's Sports Car (published by the National Corvette Museum) will be the honored inductees during a dinner held as part of the 20th Anniversary Celebration for the Museum this August. Jerry Burton (he coined the tagline 'Heartbeat of America') and John Heinricy, a GM racer, both will have stories to tell while Dave MacDonald, an early Corvette racer, is being honored posthumously having lost his life during the 1964 Indianapolis 500. So, next time you're at the NCM and in the SkyDome, Look Up!

UPCOMING EVENT

CCR 18TH ANNUAL BUNNY RUN Saturday, April 12, 2014ODs – Cecile & Ed Custer On Saturday April 12, 2014, CCR members will be welcoming spring with our 18th Annual Bunny Run delivering plush

bunnies to the patients at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond. This is our version of a teddy bear run, only better!! Again this year, CCR is inviting ALL Corvette owners to join us for this fun and extremely rewarding event. The only requirements for participation are that you drive a Corvette and bring 1 or more plush snuggly bunnies. All bunnies need to be new and in individual plastic bags. (Grocery produce bags work well and most stores will let you have them for free.)

! We will meet at 12:15PM at Smith Turf & Irrigation located at 2201 Dabney Road (23230). (Behind the Sears Appliance Outlet) We will depart for Children’s’ Hospital at 12:45PM. We will enter through the Hospital’s Brook Road entrance and park along the side of the building until all of the children are in place and ready for our arrival. Once everyone is ready, our parade of spectacular Vettes will proceed and unload the bunnies. After

unloading we will visit with the children, parents & staff and enjoy refreshments. This is a rain or shine event although it doesn’t dare rain until we have finished unloading our special cargo. Participants are invited to accompany us to Famous Dave’s on Rt.1 near Virginia Center Commons for lunch around

2-2:30PM.

! !Wondering where the all of the bunnies come from? Many seasoned CCR bunny wranglers already stocked up during last year’s after Easter sales. Others of us will be hitting up everyone we know to donate bunnies in addition to the ones we buy. Some of us will also be at Cars & Coffee at Innsbrook on April 5 from 8AM to 10AM to collect bunnies.

! Contact CCR’s chief bunny wrangler, Cecile Custer via e-mail at: [email protected] or phone at (804) 338-8362 with questions or to make other arrangements to contribute bunnies. Can’t make the Bunny Run or Bunny Collection event at Cars & Coffee on April 5? You can bring your bunnies to the meeting or contact Cecile to make other arrangements.

! Hop to it and start gathering new stuffed bunnies from every one you know, don your bunny ears and join us on April 12th so we can make this our biggest & best Bunny Run yet!

UPCOMING EVENT

SWIFT CREEK MILL THEATRE TRIPSaturday, April 12, 2014 6 PM

ODs: Paul & Gayle Murman Are you looking to do something a little different on a Saturday evening? Then make a decision to join some of your fellow CCR members on April 12th at 6 p.m. at the Swift Creek Mill Theatre for dinner and a show presentation of “Life Could Be a Dream”.

Due to the generosity of Mitchell, Wiggins & Company, LLP, we have 40 gift certificates for the theater performance. Therefore, the cost to the first 40 CCR members only to “sign-up” will be $18.00 each or $36 per couple, which is the cost of the dinner. After the 40 allotments are filled, the cost to attend is $60.50 per person or $121 per couple. “Signing up” for this event is by paying Gayle or Paul Murman the $18.00 per person no earlier than the club meeting on March 14, 2014. Currently, only 40 reservations have been made and seating will be on a first come, first served basis.

Now a little information on:

Life Could Be a Dream

The Crooning Crabcakes (the boys who were banned from the Wonderettes Prom) are rehearsing for the Dream of a Lifetime Talent Search, hosted by Big Whopper Radio. Their dream of making it to the big-time is complicated by romantic entanglements with their coach, Lois. Their 60’s doo-wop songs say it all: “Fools Fall in Love,” “Earth Angel,” “Runaround Sue,” Unchained Melody,” “The Glory of Love,” and more. You’ll be humming these tunes all the way home!

Check it out at http://www.swiftcreekmill.com

Come and be part of a fun evening by joining fellow CCR members and guests for an evening you won’t soon forget.

14TH ANNUAL CCR CRAB CRUISE

Saturday, April 19, 2014

ODs: Dave & Lori Dolan

!Ok, I KNOW Spring has really sprung because I’m seeing daffodils in yards and blooms on the trees. Now we just need the weather to quit flip-flopping and STAY warm! Warm or not, rain or shine, we’re going to Capt. Billy’s Crab House on Saturday, April 19. Hope you’re going to be with us!

DETAILS: We’ll meet at 1 pm behind the Burger King at Atlee Station Road & Chamberlayne Road (Route 301). We’ll take roll, sell some 50/50 tickets, have a brief drivers’ meeting and depart at 1:15. Since this is a rain or shine event, if the weather is bad or you’re bringing guests, feel free to drive your OTC (Other Than Corvette).

OTCs are fine…they just have to be at the back of our caravan!! Don’t forget your name tags and, if you’ve got a Club Radio, bring it.

This is a really easy caravan—no white knuckle driving here. And whether you’re looking out your side windows at the gorgeous spring scenery or looking at the row of Vettes in front of and behind you, your view will be fabulous!

I’ve made a reservation for 50, but in case our group is bigger, I’ll need to let them know so that they can have enough wait staff for us. So, if you’re free and interested, please sign up for this event. We have 3 ways for you to do that: (1) sign the Events Book at the April meeting, (2) sign up on CCR’s website, or (3) call me (H - 346-5266 or C – 640-9338).

UPCOMING EVENT

TUBING IN SCOTTSVILLESaturday, June 28, 2014

OD: Lori Dolan

! Are you ready ANOTHER fun CCR event? Then, mark your calendars for Saturday, June 28 for CCR’s annual tubing trip in Scottsville. At this time, I’m not sure if we’ll go back to James River Runners (the outfitters we’ve always used) or if we’ll go with another one downstream a bit. I’m going to do some checking and will let you know as time gets closer.

! Life vests are available for those who want them--but the river is calm and shallow in most places. Trust me—I’m afraid of water but this float is very relaxing and NOT scary! Probably the scariest thing you’ll encounter is me in a bathing suit!! Our float will take 2 to 3 hours depending on river conditions and midway down river, we’ll pull off for lunch. After the float, we’ll change into dry clothes before heading home.

! As you can imagine, this is a very popular summer event. Saturdays sell out and people without reservations are turned away. Unlike many CCR events, signing the Events Book isn’t enough. For this event, your advance payment is needed. Once I have pricing info, I’ll let you know.THIS is an event you won’t want to miss!

Very often I have spoken with people who have had a part on their car replaced and in a few months the same part fails again. This time they find out that the replacement part only has a 30 or 90 day warranty. This situation is not too bad if we are talking about a spark plug or light bulb. However, if the failed part is an air conditioning compressor, now we are in an entirely different stratosphere.

Not too long ago I was in the service lane at Capital Chevrolet and a sign caught my eye. It said Limited Lifetime Parts Warranty. I did a double-take to make sure I had read it correctly. Yes, it did say Lifetime.

After doing a little research I found that this is a pretty good proposition for you and Chevrolet. It is fairly well known that many car owners are reluctant to take their vehicles to a dealer for service and repairs, preferring to instead take them to independent shops.

While there is nothing wrong with that, when dealing with a Corvette with a 5 year 100,000 mile drivetrain warranty there is at least some incentive to go to a dealer. Regardless, I am about to offer you some additional incentive to use a Chevrolet dealer.

This Limited Lifetime Parts Warranty (LLPW) is available from any Chevrolet dealer on the following vehicles:

Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC !, Oldsmobile (yes Oldsmobile), Pontiac, Saturn, HUMMER (except H1)

It covers the following parts:

• Air Conditioning Accumulators, Compressors and Condensers• Fuel Pumps• Generators/Alternators• Ignition Coils and Modules• Shock Absorbers and Struts• Starter Motors• Water Pumps• Wheel Bearings• Wire Sets

Here’s how it works. Anytime you take your covered vehicle into a GM dealer and the covered part is replaced in a customer paid transaction, that part is covered by the LLPW. That part is also covered for as long as you own the vehicle. Notice that the warranty is not transferrable. Only parts identified on the repair order are covered and only the part is covered (not labor). The warranty covers new or remanufactured GM Original Equipment parts. If the part is not available, Chevrolet will replace the covered part with a comparable part or refund the amount the purchaser originally paid for the covered part.

All you have to do is return the vehicle to any Chevrolet dealer and provide them with a copy of the original Repair Order showing that the dealership had earlier replaced the warranty-eligible part.

There are the usual limitations such as parts used in racing and competition, failures due to negligence and other lack of maintenance, etc. which are not covered. A complete list of the exceptions is available in a brochure at any of our Chevrolet dealer sponsors

If you have any questions contact your Chevrolet dealer or call Certified Service Limited Lifetime Parts Warranty at 1-866-215-6635.

This is something to consider when the next time you need service or repairs.

CORVETTEIN THE NEWSBig-block 1967 Corvette with 3,000 miles could fetch $800,000 at auction

from HemmingsDaily By Kurt Ernst 2/21/14

! Anybody who’s spent any amount of time in the collector car hobby by now has seen plenty of cars advertised as “low mileage” and “all original,” but in the case of the big-block 1967 Chevrolet Corvette coupe known as the McNamara Corvette, even these descriptors fail to do the car justice. A mere 2,996 miles have rolled beneath the car’s wheels, and it has served as a benchmark of Corvette originality, two traits that will set it apart when it comes up for public sale for the first time ever this spring.

! By all accounts, Don McNamara (or “Donnie,” to the few people who knew him) was a quiet and patriotic man who preferred solitude to the company of others. Not one for extravagance, his celebratory gift upon leaving the Marine Corps at age 30 was a trip to Las Vegas; there, he managed to hit a $5,000 jackpot playing slots, and ultimately spent his winnings to purchase his dream car, a big-block Corvette coupe (VIN 194377S118237). Ordered from Ray Motor Company in Lamar, Colorado, McNamara’s Corvette was sprayed in Ermine White with a red stinger and red vinyl interior, and equipped with an M20 four-speed manual transmission; tinted glass; 15-inch aluminum wheels; the 390hp 427-cu.in. V-8 engine; a telescopic steering wheel; an AM/FM radio; side exhausts; and a Positraction rear-end with a 3.36:1 axle ratio, all for a sticker price of $5,504.55.

! ! Donnie took delivery on May 20, 1967, and reportedly drove the car for just a few months. When others asked what happened to his Corvette, Donnie’s response was a dismissive, “I no longer own it,” when in fact it was parked in the garage of his Colorado Springs home. When his registration and insurance expired after the first year, Donnie never renewed them; per his line of thinking, the costs were just too high for his modest budget to allow.

! That’s not to say that Donnie never drove the car. His sporadic, late-night joyrides never lasted more than a few

miles, and eventually became the stuff of urban legend in and around Colorado Springs. When the odometer crept upon 3,000 miles in the mid-1980s, Donnie stopped driving the car altogether, and it remained carefully stored in his single-car garage. Donnie died in July of 2011, and with no spouse, relatives or close friends to speak of, his estate passed into the hands of a neighborhood couple that he’d befriended in his later years.

! The immaculate Corvette was found in the garage beneath a car cover and a moving blanket decorated with both the U.S. and Marine Corps flags. Though his neighbors had lived next door for more than two decades, this was the first time they’d laid eyes on the car, which had reportedly been seen by no more than a dozen people (discounting Donnie’s late-night, under-the-radar drives, of course) until that point. Only McNamara himself had ever driven the car, and its passenger seat was never used. The seat belts had never been pulled from their retractors, and even the paperwork, complete with Protect-O-Plate, warranty book, owner’s manual and window sticker, remained in immaculate condition.

! McNamara did add a few custom touches to the car, including a pair of aluminum Offenhauser valve covers, an air cleaner cover adorned with four Corvette logos, and a Cobra insignia on the glove box. Purchased from McNamara’s fortunate neighbors in 2012 by Dr. Mark Davis, the car was exhibited at the entrance to the Bloomington Great Hall in June 2012, and will cross the auction block in April at Mecum’s Houston auction. Mecum places a pre-auction estimate of $600,000 to $800,000 on the McNamara Corvette.

! Mecum’s Houston sale is scheduled to take place on April 10-12. For additional details, visit Mecum.com.

CORVETTE RACING AT SEBRING: Disappointing End in Florida Classic After Leading During the Day, Sixth and Eighth for Corvette C7.Rs (Courtesy of CorvetteRacing.com, 3/15/14)

SEBRING, Fla. - Corvette Racing's two Chevrolet Corvette C7.Rs each led in class at Sebring International Raceway on Saturday but ultimately ended the 62nd Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida on disappointing notes. ! The No. 4 Corvette C7.R of Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner and Robin Liddell finished sixth in GT Le Mans for the second round of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. The car led in class for significant portions throughout the race before two late spins and an engine issue with 30 minutes remaining put a halt to the car's charge.Up until that point, it was smooth sailing for the No. 4 Corvette. Gavin set the class' fastest race lap (1:59.521).! The No. 3 Corvette C7.R of Antonio Garcia, Jan Magnussen and Ryan Briscoe had an up-and-down day with the "down" part coming into play again with four hours to go. The trio eventually finished eighth in class after suffering an opening-lap collision and fuel pressure problems that ultimately resulted in the replacement of the Corvette's fuel pump just past the eight-hour mark. The No. 3 Corvette also lost a lap early with front bodywork damage it sustained on the opening lap when Garcia was hit by a competitor from behind and shoved into a BMW ahead of him on the opening lap. But timely yellows and strategy calls put the Spaniard into the lead just past the halfway point. The next round of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship takes place on the Long Beach (Calif.) street circuit from April 11-12.

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R:"It is a shame. It went from a disaster to really enjoying the fight back. The car was running really good. The team did a really good job just to get it back after we crashed on the first lap, and the car was behaving really good. Good strategies, and step-by-step we were going up. It was going perfect. Then again, everything went south. It's definitely something we need to take care of for sure. We can take this as learning and try to fix every single thing because we have the speed, we have best team and we have a really good car."

JAN MAGNUSSEN, NO. 3 CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R:"It's been up and down all day. It didn't start so well. Antonio got hit from behind on the first lap and smacked into somebody else. There was quite a bit of damage to the front - the fenders and we had to change the whole nose. We went a lap down but got that back and into the lead of the race. Then we had the unfortunate issue with the fuel pump and spent time trying to fix it. The car was pretty good. We could drive as fast as anyone out there. It was a shame about the little things. But the Corvette Racing guys were great. We all are

massively disappointed."RYAN BRISCOE, NO. 3 CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R:"The engine started running worse off the corners like it wasn't running clean. It started to get worse and worse and worse as we went on. In the end it was the fuel pump. At least we were able to go until we got a full-course caution so that helped us out a little bit. Unfortunately we were three laps down. It was just so good to have the lead and run 1-2. We were the quickest cars on the track, for sure. It's just a real shame."

OLIVER GAVIN, NO. 4 CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R:"It's very frustrating that we had that problem and issue at the end. Up to that point we were looking very strong. I got in the car toward the end to do the last couple of stints. I had a couple of issues inside the cockpit with lights that we moved around after night practice. And we're still finding our way a little bit with this new car. I got a bit hot coming into Turn 17 and had a bit of a spin. We caught back up to the Viper and Porsche. As I was right there with them, we started to have this problem with the engine and it started to miss a bit. I was pushing harder and harder to try and keep up. I pushed a little too hard coming out of Turn 5 and looped it off there. It was pretty clear we had a problem after that. It was a case of managing the situation until the finish. But I think the guys did an absolute fantastic job with the car this weekend. For 11 hours we had one of the quickest cars and best cars. We were in a position to fight with anyone and seemed like we were the class of the field."

TOMMY MILNER, NO. 4 CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R:"It's a bummer. It's unfortunate, for sure. It was kind of like Daytona, unfortunately. The car was good for 95 percent of the race. That last five percent now has been a little bit of a problem. But it's a new car. I'm excited about how quick we've been... and good teamwork. The No. 3 car guys had a problem early on and they were able to fight back from that. We had our own little issues throughout the race. I kept fighting and got back up front there toward the end. It was just unlucky."

ROBIN LIDDELL, NO. 4 CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R:"It was disappointing obviously. Tommy (Milner) and Olly (Gavin) did the lion's share of the work, by far. And it would have been their win really, and the team's win if we'd gotten to that point. But obviously it's disappointing. We came pretty close at Daytona and then again here. But ultimately we've got to be reasonably happy with the performance of the car and obviously the team. But it's always hard when you get close to the end in a race like this, looking like you're going to get results, and then you start running into difficulties. But essentially it's just new car blues. Having these two races as the first two of the season makes it incredibly tough. I think the car has shown itself to be not just a contender, but a race-winning car. It's been a great experience. I'm happy to have the opportunity to drive for Corvette. On that side, it's good."

DOUG FEHAN, CORVETTE RACING PROGRAM MANAGER:"The Sebring 12 Hours typically is one of the most challenging and unpredictable auto races in the world. Today was no different. Similar to the first race of the year at Daytona, the Chevrolet Corvette C7.R showed its tremendous potential with both cars leading significant portions of the race - including the No. 3 after facing adversity on the opening lap. At Corvette Racing, we don't give up and that was on full display again. We're encouraged with the performance of both Corvette C7.Rs and are eager to get back to racing at Long Beach."
