REID HOUSE, 75 KING ST SYDNEY
2
According to the Office of Environment & Heritage, Reid House is an 11 story Federation
warehouse. It is one of the tallest in the world to use timber post and beam structure. It has
aesthetic significance as a building of high technical and architectural quality. It has a masonry
facade, using external terracotta panels in addition to the more usual face brick and sandstone.
The building has scientific and historic value retaining internal and external idiosyncratic details
such as 1940’s commercial interiors.
It has association with renowned Sydney architects A L McCredie and Anderson. The land was
once owned by Sydney University, it was leased to Robert Reid & Co in 1907. The building was
fully complete in 1914 and Reid acquired title to the property in 1936.

With a project such as this it was of utmost importance that the right people were chosen
for the job. A J Bristow and Sons were chosen because of their outstanding experience doing
similar work. They have done a number of heritage works previously.
NICCO Timber Windows & Doors supplied the windows and doors for all the shop fronts and the
foyer, the windows in the floors above that needed replacing, the foyer directory board and the
panel posts along the walls.
NICCO have a history of supplying exceptional quality timber windows and doors for heritage
and contemporary projects. They have an unrivalled reputation for service and delivery. Marcus
Bristow of A J Bristow and Sons said:
“NICCO were chosen for the job because of their long term relationship, Bristow have been
using NICCO for many years. NICCO always provide a good response and offer value for
money.”

CHALLENGES
Stakeholders
It is somewhat difficult to satisfy customers when there are more than one with varying
requirements. In this case it was The City of Sydney Council and the designer. There were
multiple changes and variations throughout the project to contend with. Bristow did a great job
keeping all stakeholders with competing demands satisfied.
Awnings
There are always many problems that occur during a build or renovation. The biggest challenge
here were the structural issues and complications with the awnings. They needed to be
strengthened and needed extra brackets.
Pedestrians
Located on a busy street with commercial shopfronts meant that Bristow were working on the
pedestrian thoroughfare. This proved to be quite a challenge along with the associated safety
issues.
The outcome was highly successful and proved to be an achievement by Bristow and NICCO.
