Gymnastics Volunteers Needed!!
We are in need of volunteers to spot/supervise students for the gymnastics unit in PE classes. During each class, students are put into small groups that move around to different stations, including the balance beam, vault, and parallel bars. In order for students to use the equipment, there needs to be volunteers to help spot and supervise each station. If we are able to have a volunteer at each station, it will ensure that the kids will have an opportunity to experience all of the equipment.
!Please take a minute and complete the Sign-up Genius located below or call Mrs. Skogman (558-2471) to volunteer. All grade levels are involved, so you have plenty of opportunities to help out. !http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0b4faea72ba0fc1-gymanstics

MATH OPPORTUNITIES Math Games: Training and practice is available through Jackson Elementary’s
Instructional Design Strategist, Allison Walter. Math volunteers will learn how to play a
variety of math games, focusing on learning addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
division. The games are designed to be engaging and meaningful. Math games, at any
grade level are used to increase automaticity, fluency, and accuracy.
RUNNING RECORD A running record allows an adult to assess a student's reading performance as she/he reads from a benchmark book. A running record form is supplied for adults to record
reading patterns of students’ oral reading. After completing a running record, an adult
assesses students’ comprehension of the benchmark text using comprehension
questions. Younger students are assessed more often than older students. Typically
the following schedule is preferred by teachers.
·∙ Early Emergent readers (Levels aa – C): every 2 to 4 weeks ·∙ Emergent readers (Levels D – J): every 4 to 6 weeks ·∙ Early fluent readers (Levels K – P): every 6 to 8 weeks ·∙ Fluent readers (Levels Q – Z): every 8 to 10 weeks Taking a running record takes practice. Training and practice is available through
Jackson Elementary’s Instructional Design Strategist, Allison Walter.
READING FLUENCY PRACTICE Reading fluency is essential. Providing fluency practice and support for our students is
critical. Academic studies reveal a strong correlation between reading fluency and
comprehension, as well as a strong correlation between reading fluency and students
overall reading ability. Many students need extra practice to become more fluent.
Volunteers are needed at school to listen to students read, offer specific feedback, and
model fluent reading. Allison Walter, Instructional Design Strategist at Jackson
Elementary, will work with any volunteers to learn how to encourage fluent reading as
well as offer positive, constructive feedback.
