Gymnastics Volunteers Needed!!

We are in need of volunteers to spot/supervise students for the gymnastics unit in PE classes. During each class, students are put into small groups that move around to different stations, including the balance beam, vault, and parallel bars. In order for students to use the equipment, there needs to be volunteers to help spot and supervise each station. If we are able to have a volunteer at each station, it will ensure that the kids will have an opportunity to experience all of the equipment.

!Please take a minute and complete the Sign-up Genius located below or call Mrs. Skogman (558-2471) to volunteer. All grade levels are involved, so you have plenty of opportunities to help out. !http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0b4faea72ba0fc1-gymanstics

 Volunteer  Opportunities  at  Jackson

Many  classrooms  are  looking  for  both  short-term  and  long-term  volunteers  for  the

spring  semester  for  one-on-one  and  small  group  reading  and  math  help.

Points  to  know:  ● New  to  volunteering  at  Jackson?    Breath,  it’s  easy!    Your  commitment  is  as  much  or  as

little  as  you  can  give  right  now.

● Fast  training  to  help  you  get  started

● You  don’t  have  to  volunteer  in  your  kid’s  classrooms,  sometimes  it’s  easier  to  help  in

the  classroom  next  door

Current  Volunteer  Needs  (descriptions  on  following  page):  ● Kindergarten  Reading  (RAZ  Kids)  10:15-11am  (daily)

● Kindergarten  Math  1:00-1:45  Reid  (Day  2&3)

● 3rd  Grade  Math  315-3:40  (daily)

MATH  OPPORTUNITIES  Math  Games:    Training  and  practice  is  available  through  Jackson  Elementary’s

Instructional  Design  Strategist,  Allison  Walter.  Math  volunteers  will  learn  how  to  play  a

variety  of  math  games,  focusing  on  learning  addition,  subtraction,  multiplication,  and

division.    The  games  are  designed  to  be  engaging  and  meaningful.    Math  games,  at  any

grade  level  are  used  to  increase  automaticity,  fluency,  and  accuracy.

RUNNING  RECORD      A  running  record  allows  an  adult  to  assess  a  student's  reading  performance  as  she/he  reads  from  a  benchmark  book.  A  running  record  form  is  supplied  for  adults  to  record

reading  patterns  of  students’  oral  reading.      After  completing  a  running  record,  an  adult

assesses  students’  comprehension  of  the  benchmark  text  using  comprehension

questions.    Younger  students  are  assessed  more  often  than  older  students.    Typically

the  following  schedule  is  preferred  by  teachers.

·∙                  Early  Emergent  readers  (Levels  aa  –  C):  every  2  to  4  weeks  ·∙                  Emergent  readers  (Levels  D  –  J):  every  4  to  6  weeks  ·∙                  Early  fluent  readers  (Levels  K  –  P):  every  6  to  8  weeks  ·∙                  Fluent  readers  (Levels  Q  –  Z):  every  8  to  10  weeks    Taking  a  running  record  takes  practice.  Training  and  practice  is  available  through

Jackson  Elementary’s  Instructional  Design  Strategist,  Allison  Walter.

READING  FLUENCY  PRACTICE  Reading fluency is essential. Providing fluency practice and support for our students is

critical. Academic studies reveal a strong correlation between reading fluency and

comprehension, as well as a strong correlation between reading fluency and students

overall reading ability. Many students need extra practice to become more fluent.

Volunteers are needed at school to listen to students read, offer specific feedback, and

model fluent reading. Allison Walter, Instructional Design Strategist at Jackson

Elementary, will work with any volunteers to learn how to encourage fluent reading as

well  as  offer  positive,  constructive  feedback.

In an effort to save paper, we will be including the SCRIP order form in Thursday eFolders, where you can print off a SCRIP form to send in with your order. You

can always look at the SCRIP form and email Lori ([email protected]) or I

([email protected]) your order and we will process from there. You will still need to send in a check/cash with your child. As always, you can also refer to the www.SHOPWITHSCRIP.com web page for additional

cards not offered on our order form.

We are once again going to be exploring some online ordering/purchasing options. As the “Shop With SCRIP”

site changes, new ways of ordering have begun. We will keep you posted with these exciting changes.

To date, we have a profit of $1,300 for the IMC. Let’s keep that number climbing. Thank you for all of the orders so far this year. $3,000 in new books was just

purchased for the library using SCRIP funds earned last year. Watch for your child to bring one home.

You can print off the most current order form below.

JACKSON PTA FAQs What is the Jackson PTA?

The Jackson PTA is a non-profit group of parents and teachers. We work together to support Jackson Elementary by providing additional resources when needed. We also work together to try to build a strong sense of Jackson

school community.

What programs does the Jackson PTA support?

The Jackson PTA supports Jackson Elementary by supplying additional classroom needs like microphones. The PTA provides each teacher with $100 to spend on other classroom items. The Jackson PTA supports a school based

technology fund. We also support the IMC with additional books and supplies. The Jackson PTA funds classroom field trips. We sponsor the 5th Grade Recognition. The Jackson PTA provides funding for a week of volunteer

staffed after school enrichment programs during the spring. We support America Reads week. The Jackson PTA sponsors a book fair. We pay for a guest reader to visit the school. The Jackson PTA offers a Community Caring Fund to help Jackson families in need. The Jackson PTA also supports the staff by providing conference lunches

and by providing a staff appreciation celebration week.

How does the Jackson PTA build a sense of School Community?

The Jackson Elementary PTA helps build a sense of school community by organizing and funding fun events such as school movie night, swim night, the Halloween Hike, an ice skating event, a roller skating event, a night at the

Kernel’s,  Breakfast  with  a  Buddy,  the  Kindergarten  breakfast  and  our  Spring  Carnival  Event.

How does the Jackson PTA fund these programs?

The Jackson PTA funds these initiatives by having one large fundraiser in the fall and supplementing all programs by collecting box tops, collecting soup can labels, collecting Hy-Vee receipts, collecting pop tops, offering birthday

books, offering SCRIP purchases and offering Hy-Vee Coupon Books purchases.
