February 2018: Heart Health AwarenessGood nutrition, regular physical activity and avoiding tobacco use are three of the American Heart Association Life’s Simple 7®

In February, Americans are encouraged to take steps to a healthier lifestyle. Start small by taking a quick inventory of your current health behaviors. Pick one simple change you can commit to for the rest of the year. Eat well, move more and feel better.

As part of the district commitment to LiveWellness, Cedar Rapids Schools are working with other local organizations to increase awareness of the importance of Heart Health. Here are four ways you and your students can participate:

1. Wear red on Friday, February 2nd. It’s also green shirt day, but don’t red and green look lovely together? Snap a pic of your building’s heart health support and send it to [email protected] to be included in an upcoming issue of WellNews or post it on social media with one of our hashtags: #WeAreCRCSD or #CRCSDPride.

2. District-Wide Bulletin Board Contest • A new smoothie flavor is being created right now! Be the first building to try it by

having students help create a bulletin board that promotes habits that improve heart health.

• Send a picture of your board to [email protected] no later than Friday, February 16th to be eligible. One elementary and one secondary winner will be chosen and central office staff will be on hand on Wellness Wednesday (February 28th) to serve up this heart healthy treat to kick off your morning.

3. Heart Health Tips • Use the tips on the next page to encourage heart healthy behaviors in your

building on daily announcements, website, posters or on your bulletin board!

4. Heart Health Superhero Writing Contest • Submissions should finish the statement “I am a Heart Health Superhero

because….” and include a brief description (100 words or less) of why the student takes care of his/her heart health and encourages others to do the same.

• Elementary and secondary winners will be selected and their statements will be included in a future issue of WellNews and given a Blue Zones Prize Pack.

• Submissions are due by Friday, March 2nd and can be emailed/scanned to [email protected] or hard copies sent to Stephanie Neff at the ELSC.

Heart Healthy Tips: Smoking traditional cigarettes or electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or vapes), or using smokeless tobacco (also called dip, snuff or chew) are some of the worst things you can do to your body. Just smoking a few cigarettes or using smokeless tobacco a couple of times might make you addicted, and it can be very hard to quit. Using ANY tobacco product damages nearly EVERY organ in your body and can cause heart disease and cancer. Using smokeless tobacco is NOT a safe alternative to smoking! Children, teens and adults who are physically active have healthier bodies and minds than people who aren’t. Regular physical activity keeps your heart healthy and strong and it helps you build healthy muscles, bones and joints. Physical activity can also raise your self-esteem, improve your mood, help you sleep better and give you more energy. Making physical activity a part of your everyday life is also a good way to help achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. It’s important to be physically active every day. Physical activity should be as important to your daily routine as brushing your teeth, bathing and getting enough sleep. Eating healthy foods is one of the most important ways to keep your heart working at its best. Choose foods that help you keep your heart — and the rest of your body — in top shape. Keep your weight in balance by matching the amount of energy you put in (the calories you eat and drink) with the amount of energy you put out or need for the activities you do each day. As your body grows and changes, gaining and losing some weight is part of developing into a healthy young adult. But gaining or losing too much weight at any point in your life can be hazardous to your health. Keeping your body weight in a healthy range goes a long way toward keeping your heart healthy. Blood pressure is important to good heart health — even for kids and teenagers. The good news is that getting it checked is quick and painless. Your doctor or school nurse can measure it. Many kids (and adults) have too much cholesterol in their blood without knowing it. You want your blood to be able to go with the flow, so keep your blood cholesterol low! Cholesterol is a waxy substance in your bloodstream and cells that your body needs to function. Some cholesterol is important for good health, but too much can hurt your body, your brain and your heart. When too much cholesterol circulates in the blood, it can slowly build up inside the walls of your arteries that feed blood to your heart and brain. Cholesterol combines with other substances in your blood to form “plaque.” This thick, hard deposit can narrow the arteries, make them less flexible and put you at major risk for heart disease and stroke. Children and teens need to watch what they eat for a lot of reasons. One of them is that a healthy diet can help prevent diabetes, a disease that increases your risk of heart disease and stroke. Your digestive system breaks down foods and beverages that contain carbohydrates — like grains, fruits and vegetables — down into sugar. Certain foods, like whole grains, many fruits and vegetables and other high-fiber foods, take longer to digest. This helps keep the amount of sugar in your blood from going too high. If your blood sugar goes high too often, it can overwork your body’s ability to keep your blood sugar in healthy ranges, and you’re more likely to develop diabetes.

Dear Parent/Guardian of 5th grade student,

Welcome to 2018, 2nd semester and your student’s last semester here as an elementary student! As we move into spring, a number of transition opportunities for your student will be offered to support their 5th grade promotion to middle school.

Traditionally in the Cedar Rapids Community School District, a student’s attendance zone elementary school determines their attendance zone middle school. This year your student has multiple options to consider for 6th grade! The CRCSD is excited to offer a variety of school choice for parents in addition to their attendance zone middle school, including Roosevelt Creative Corridor Business Academy, the district's first magnet middle school!

The majority of Jackson Elementary attendance zone students are zoned to attend Taft Middle School for their 6th grade year based on their address. As with previous years, our school guidance counselor will be scheduling a group visit for these 5th grade students to visit Taft later this spring. More information to come soon on those visits.

Our school guidance counselor will set up individual/small group visits (as needed) to permit students’ attendance zone schools based on their address. Existing permitted students also have the ability to choose the same path for their middle school option as their elementary feeder middle school. An indication below of if you are choosing to continue your permit's path to middle school is needed.

Roosevelt Creative Corridor Business Academy, welcomes its second class of 6th graders in the year to come. RCCBA offers a different way of learning in the areas of: STEAM, Leadership & Entrepreneurship and Global Systems (communicating and problems solving around global issues) by utilizing both blended learning (online/face-to-face) and project based learning. More information on Roosevelt is available at http://roosevelt.cr.k12.ia.us . Admission to the Roosevelt Creative Corridor Business Academy will be by Lottery. Information and application for the Magnet option is available at http://www.cr.k12.ia.us/schools/magnet-schools/. The Lottery application deadline is Friday, March 9, 2018.

Students, teachers, and staff at Roosevelt Creative Corridor Business Academy will take a multi-dimensional approach to learning that incorporates key areas of businesses today. Students will learn foundational skills and content within blended learning environments, where they are provided personalized instruction of standards in both online and face-to-face experiences. Additionally, within the business theme, RCCBA will follow three main pathways of project based learning experiences that provide applied learning to the common core standards, including: S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts and math), Leadership & Entrepreneurship and Global Systems (communicating and problem solving around global issues). Magnet Compact, Revised 11/10/17

Parent Expectations and Agreement 2017-1018

Please initial the following, indicating that you have read and agree to… _____Parent(s)/guardian(s) are expected to ensure their child(ren) have regular and consistent on-time attendance. There are many families wanting their children to attend RCCBA. Poor, irregular/sporadic attendance and/or chronic tardiness or school absence will be promptly addressed and a plan made in partnership with the parent/guardian to improve attendance. _____An instructional program focused on reading, mathematics, science, social studies and writing will be central. RCCBA is held accountable for the same learning results and Iowa Common Core standards as any other CRCSD middle school. _____While the core instructional program remains, the way in which your child(ren) engage and interact with it will look different from traditional middle schools. An integrated academic approach infusing STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics), Leadership & Entrepreneurship skills and Global Systems (communicating and problems solving around world issues) will be used; giving your child a theme based learning experience with pathways toward the overall concepts in “business”. _____Parent(s)/guardian(s) will work in a partnership with the teachers and the school. Specifically, this means regularly communicating with your child(ren)’s teachers, attending at least two school events a year, attending parent teacher conferences, supporting RCCBA by sharing your time and talents (volunteering, sharing/teaching a skill, talent, hobby and/or connections) and completing a parent feedback survey. _____Parent(s)/guardian(s) unable to follow these expectations may be asked to meet with administration to develop a plan that focuses on helping your child(ren) be successful at school. This may result in a family choosing or being asked to transfer to the alternately assigned school during or at the end of the year. It is expected that any parent wanting to change schools, will wait until the end of the school year. _____Students Accepted to RCCBA via magnet school lottery. Parents/guardians will be asked to designate if their child will require transportation at the time they are accepted into a magnet school. Transportation pick-up and drop-off locations will be your child(ren)’s home attendance school. Families are responsible for transportation to and from the home school unless: your child(ren) were transported to the home school prior to lottery because of an eligible reason (ELL student, safe route, or over 2 miles away.) Notice of transportation pick-up and drop-off points will be provided to parents/guardians prior to the beginning of school. Daily transportation to the magnet school will only be provided for students during the regular school calendar and any changes to transportation needs should be communicated to the school. The f The families that comprise this great neighborhood and those families choosing to send their children to RCCBA from outside the Nm neighborhood is what makes RCCBA a special place. It is important that we act as valued partners and that we appreciate, value and participate in this magnet school. It is us, collectively, that make RCCBA great and it is us, collectively, who must expect more from our kids, parents and school.
