April/May 2009 Congressman Bobby L. Rush Receives Kennedy-King College Distinguished Service Award (Chicago) Congressman Bobby L. Rush, 1st District, Illinois, received the Kennedy-King College (KKC) Distinguished Service Award during the colleges’ First Alumni Scholarship Gala, Friday March 13 in the Main Theater at Kennedy-King College. Congressman Rush recounted his days as a Black Panther recruiter back in the late 60’s and how the early Kennedy-King College/ Wilson Jr. College students were politically engaged and motivated by the Black consciousness movement to evoke change. The evening featured an historic first conversation with all living presidents of Kennedy-King College: Harold Pates, PhD who was streamed-in live via the Internet from California; City Colleges of Chicago Chancellor Wayne D. Watson, PhD; Joann Horton, PhD; Wellington Wilson; and current president, Clyde El-Amin. The transition years from Wilson Jr. College to Kennedy-King College with the late presidents Maceo Bowie and Ewen Akin were captured in a video presentation with interviews by KKC professor’s emeriti, Robert L. Cruthird, PhD and Jeanette Williams. They shared compelling insights on the social history of Kennedy-King College based on research compiled for a book they are co-authoring about the college from its inception through 2007. Their research underscores how student protests lead to the emergence of the college’s first Black president, Maceo Bowie, and how that tradition has been sustained. KKC Community Partner Profile Kenneth Johnson, Proprietor, Subway Franchise

The Subway franchise in the strip mall at 63rd and Union is abeehive of activity during the noon hour. It’s a daily sojourn forKennedy-King College students desiring fresh sandwiches, homemade soups and hot cookies for lunch. Most days patrons aregreeted and served by the proprietor, Kenneth Johnson, anEnglewood native who decided to launch his business in theneighborhood he affectionately calls home.

Kenneth Johnson grew up around 65th and Wolcott in theheart of the Englewood community. His eyes sparkle with theremembrance of riding his bike around the “hood”, playing hoopsin the alleys and along asphalt streets. Looking south through thewall sized window of his Subway franchise at the “L” train cominginto the Halsted stop, in the middle of the KKC campus, hereminisces about his first ride on the 63 and Ashland train. Hechuckles remembering how getting on the “L” to go downtownfrom the south side was a huge event growing up. It’s memoriesof those events and the people who made them special thatcompelled him to come back to Englewood to start his businesseven though it’s vastly differently today. “I wanted to be a part ofthe economic growth and rebirth of the community I call homeand to be an example of what is possible for the next generation.”

Johnson credits Kennedy-King College with providing him witha solid academic foundation that allowed him to transfer to afour-year college without leaving home. He was in the KKCBroadcast Communications program between 1993 and 1994and is grateful for instructors like Kevin Brown and Virgil Hemphilwho were instrumental in preparing him to transfer to ColumbiaCollege where he received a bachelor’s degree in 1985. Salesand marketing were a good fit for the ambitious and charismaticJohnson. He excelled in sales with the Katz Media Group; but, after three years of corporate life, the spirit of entrepreneurshipprevailed. Residential Real Estate was his first calling beforebecoming a highly successful Subway franchise owner.

Today, Kenneth Johnson aspires to open another franchise butremains committed to the community and the college students thatpatronize his business. He hopes his shop is where students willcome and share their vision-over a sandwich and pop, “Youngpeople need to see a vision that has come to fruition and haveconversations with achievers.“ Johnson says all too oftensuccessful people leave their home communities and enjoy successelsewhere but for him, “Its good to see that where your heart androots are, you are able to share accomplishment and help othersreach some of their dreams.”

“Jobs are Out there!”KKC Employment Partner Secures JobsDespite Recession

The KKC branch of the Jane Addams Hull House Association(JAHHA) is breaking job placement records. In the midst of 8.6percent Chicago unemployment (IDES report), a staggering 11percent unemployment in Englewood and the worst recessionsince the great depression JAHHA has eclipsed March ’08 hiringnumbers. The “big buzz” is recession equals high unemploymentbut according to Ivan Ramos, Employment Specialist- JAHHA“jobs are out there!” JAHHA effectively places people in an arrayof job positions from customer service to labor intensive jobs andchildcare is taking the lead this season.

A dedicated, passionate and energetic team is key to theJAHHA job placement success. Randall “Randy“ Ward, ProjectCoordinator of the KKC JAHHA office says his team is aggressivein developing sustainable relationships with area employers andproviding them with excellent job candidates. New to theirstrategy is working with college department chairpersons to keepthem in the loop of what employers need. Employers are lookingfor individuals with an Associate Degree or certification in specificskill areas. Ward says, “The good news is, KKC is a vast resourcefor educated skilled employees.”

Ramos says he is really excited about destroying myths thatstigmatize KKC students as being unemployable due to lack of

skills and poor employment records because they are located ina high unemployment area. “Sometimes it’s a simple matter ofreframing a resume to match academic training with what theprospective employer needs.” A recent client, Cheryl Taylor, 1980KKC alum, had spent a full career in the home care industrybefore loosing her job last year. The Englewood residentrestructured her resume in JAHHA workshops to highlight her KKCAssociate Degree in Child Development and she quickly landed afull-time job in early childhood education.

The JAHHA primarily services KKC students and Englewoodarea residents but they also accept “walk-ins” and referrals.JAHHA will host its annual Spring Job Fair in association with18th Ward Alderman Joann Thompson and Kennedy-KingCollege on Thursday, April 23 in the KKC W- Building Atrium. The event attracts thousands and this year is expected to be oneof the largest. Attendees should bring resumes and a winningattitude or you can call the JAHHA at KKC: 773-487-3723 forjob and job fair information.

Earth Day is April 22. Arbor Day is April 24. But these aren’tjust individual holidays—these are opportunities to spreadawareness of the environmental challenges our world must face, not just today but tomorrow and the days ahead. The globalclimate is changing. Natural resources are being depleted. Arewe leaving behind a green world for our children andgrandchildren to inherit?

One group hoping to spark change is the Earth Day Network(EDN), a collaborative effort that includes more than 17,000organizations in 174 countries. Since the first April 22 Earth Dayin 1970, Earth Day has united the globe with a call forenvironmental events and activities. To celebrate Earth Day 2009,EDN is kicking off its Green Generation campaign, a two-yearinitiative designed to stir a commitment to sustainability amongpeople of all ages and all nationalities. Learn more about EDN’scampaigns at www.earthday.net.A Green Windy City

Chicago, too, is doing its part to foster sustainable practicesand create a greener world. The City Hall building, as oneexample, is topped by a stunning rooftop garden containing20,000 plants of more than 100 species, mostly prairie plantsnative to the Chicago region. Planted in 2000 as part of the city’sUrban Heat Island Initiative, the City Hall rooftop garden improvesair quality and acts as a natural cooling agent to offset the highertemperatures of the urban environment. In its mission to informviewers in the Chicago area and elsewhere about today’spertinent issues, WYCC-TV20 is devoting the last week of April tospecial local programming delving into global environmentalconcerns. With help from Wise TV, you can go beyond the hypeof the “green movement” to explore the real meaning andreal-world implications that go along with going green.

Wise TV Presents Green TVThe first of these local green programs is an original Wise TV

documentary titled To Green or Not to Green. It focuses on howour pursuit of the three basic elements of human need—food, shelter, and security—has often come at the cost of damaging ourenvironment. Can we live in balance with nature?

To Green or Not to Green explores this issue on Earth Day,Wednesday, April 22 at 7 p.m., with an encore presentationSunday, April 26 at 7 p.m.

Also on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m., is LittleGreen Men, a lifestyle and living make-over show that explorescost-saving urban conversions, hosted by local Chicagopersonalities. On Thursday, April 23 at 9 p.m. (encorepresentation Sunday, April 26 at 9 p.m.), Wise TV Forum returnswith an episode on the subject of “Making Green with Green.”Join Professor Jumaani Bates of Wilbur Wright College and hostCM! Winters Palacio as they speak with green experts about thebottom line benefit for the average person.

Then, on Sunday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m., Wise TV teams upwith the City Colleges of Chicago to discuss environmentalinitiatives in a special town hall-style meeting entitled GreeningUp. Panelists from the City Colleges will dissect the greenmovement and its status in a time of financial crisis, with the hopesof making “eco-friendly” a bit more “people-friendly.”

At the end of the month, learn about the Rural-Urban PolicyExchange, a new program developed by State Senator KwameRaoul and the Illinois Farm Bureau to help foster cooperationbetween urban and rural community leaders. Catch it Thursday,April 30 at 7 p.m. WYCC-TV20 will also address green topics inspecial editions of its regular local programming, such as CityScience, hosted by Professor Mike Davis.
