EBSCOhost Integrated Search (EHIS)
Planned Release: June 2009
• Allow user to stop and view results when at least one source is available• There will be insignificant wait time on this screen (<30sec)• Meshed with result list for less disruption
Tier 1
Tier 2• Initial Entry into Result List• Defaults to merged list of results from Tier 1 sources• Tier 2 sources available in Integrated Search panel, slower sources continue without affecting experience
Examples
• Business– Tier 1: Business Source Premier, ABI/INFORM– Tier 2: Mergent, ReferenceUSA
• Science– Tier 1: Science Ref Center, Web of Science– Tier 2: ScienceDirect, Science.gov
• Nursing– Tier 1: CINAHL, Medline, PubMed– Tier 2: Cochrane, ERIC, Academic Search
Great sources, but may be slower…
Great sources, but searchable text is
too sparse so suffers low relevancy rank…
Great source, but too general for subject…
More Notes on Tier 1 and Tier 2
• No limit. Sources can even be in multiple subject “groups”– Source can be Tier 1 in one subject group and Tier 2 in another
• Aids a faster user experience, secondary sources are still searched and cached so retrieving results is one fast click away
• Provides great flexibility to librarians and administrators– Tier1:2 model is an option, you certainly can default to merge all
• Concept is common on many current library e-resources web sites:
Control order, how Tier 2’s are highlighted
7
Usability Testing
• Conducted several tests to evaluate the best designs, link placements, functions, etc and overall user experience
Catalog Records
Fielded Searching
• Search tags– Creator/Author = AU and AR– Title = TI– Subject = SU and DE – Source = SO and JN– Description = AB– ISSN = IS– ISBN = IB
• Also you can enter search tags specific to a database, just surround by quotes “”
– JSTOR Example:• james henry hammond AND "ty:fla" • judy blume NOT "ty:brv"
Can choose to retrieve More Results
Notes on deduping. An impartial algorithm evaluates the following…• Journals deduped on:
- Date Published, Volume, Issue, Start Page, Journal Name, Title, ISSN, Full Text
• Books and catalog records deduped on: -Date Published, Volume, Issue, Start Page, Title, ISBN, Physical Description, Publisher, Holding Location, Full Text
Setup Process
• Library fills out a form with the desired “connectors” (vendor, authentication type, etc)
• EBSCO Customer Satisfaction does the heavy lifting setup on behalf of the library
