Hennepin County, in coordination with the City of Richfield, will be rebuilding 66th Street (County Road 53) between Xerxes and 16th avenues. The new street is designed to be safer, more livable and welcoming while balancing potential impacts to residents and businesses along the corridor.

Features of the reconstruction• Full street reconstruction to address deteriorating pavement,

utility and drainage concerns and storm water quality conditions.

• Raised medians and two-way left turns to separate traffic and provide a safer pedestrian crossing at locations throughout.

• Bicycle facilities and enhanced pedestrian accommodations.

• Accessible curb ramps at intersections.

• Accessible traffic signal replacement at intersections.

• Roundabouts at Lyndale and Nicollet avenues.

• Streetscaping.

Spring 2017 project overview

About this area66th Street is a county road that spans the entire east-to-west length of the City of Richfield, as well as into a portion of Edina.

The corridor includes a mix of commercial and residential land use. 66th Street is often used as an alternative from Highway 62 and other nearby connections. On an average day there may be anywhere from 12,000 to 22,000 vehicles on the road.

In addition to personal vehicle traffic, the corridor attracts a variety of travel modes including buses, bicyclists, pedestrians and high frequency buses. The nature of the corridor coupled with aging infrastructure and safety concerns made reconstruction of 66th Street an important priority for Hennepin County and local partners.

Construction phases

Travel considerationsWe will be working to maintain access for residents and businesses as much as possible during construction, and will provide signed detours for any closures that are needed. In general, we expect the following:

• At least one pedestrian access route will be maintained at all times.

• One lane in each direction will be provided for vehicle traffic during the majority of the work (please note this may be a gravel surface).

Also, be aware that short-term full closures of one or two blocks may occur. Typically, these are no more than four days each and may occur back-to-back as the contractor moves down the road. We will contact residents and businesses in the immediate area in advance.

Business accessResidents will still be able to access businesses along the corridor. We will also be working with individual businesses one-on-one to make sure they are aware of the construction activities nearby so as to make sure their clients and customers can still get the goods and services they need.

Bus serviceIn order to maintain local service to residents during the 66th Street reconstruction, buses will be routed to local streets during major construction in 2017 and 2018. Maps with the changed routes and bus stop locations will be available each year at www.hennepin.us/66street.

Additionally, Metro Transit will have some bus stops temporarily closed during utility work and other activities as needed. The best way to stay updated on bus stop closures on your route is to visit Metro Transit’s Rider Alerts website: www.metrotransit.org/rider-alerts.
