We strive to provide homeless families with everything they’ll initially need as they transition from the streets or emergency shelters. Joshina and her family, including her son Tariq, came to Save the Family in August. They had nothing. Thankfully, we receive lots of donated items and community support to provide families like Joshina’s with beds, bedding, and household items. Providing families with these items sets them up to achieve success! Meet Karina! At 25 years old, this single mother of 5 became homeless after losing her job and leaving a dead-end relationship. Once at Save the Family, Karina immediately set to work on a plan to become self-sufficient. Working with her case coordinator, she planned to obtain a certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). With her interest in this area, and its earnings potential, they both agreed that it would be the perfect fit. She enrolled in a program locally, attended our parenting classes, and learned critical budgeting skills. Her children participated in our children’s programs while she attended classes, met with her case coordinator, and continued moving closer to her goals. After several months of very hard work, we are happy to report that Karina received her CNA over the summer. Even more exciting - she recently secured a stable position working in the area of Developmental Disabilities! She is enjoying her job and continues to save so that she and her children can move to a place of their own. More determined than ever, we’ve witnessed Karina’s life change dramatically. With her new found independence, she seems to also have a renewed sense of determination. She’s as proud of herself as we are. Congratulations Karina! For more than 50 years, Las Noches Woman’s Club has provided volunteer services and donations to our community. With over 40 members, the GFWC Las Noches Women’s Club has been an avid supporter of Save the Family for a number of years. These wonderful ladies have sponsored families for the holidays, hosted baby showers for our clients, run donations drives from toys and household products, and several paint and clean projects on our housing units which they also fully equipped with dishes, pots and pans, drinking glasses, linens, etc.  Basically, they brought out everything the family would need to get their house set up.

Las Noches Woman’s club began as an “Evening Department” of the Tempe Woman’s Club on December 3, 1958. Many women were entering the work force and were unable to attend day meetings. A short time after, these ladies formed a committee to name the group, and an application was made to become a GFWC Club. Las Noches (meaning “nights”) Woman’s Club was born January 21, 1959. Their purpose is to promote a common interest in charitable works, wholesome fellowship, adult education, and community affair, and to participate in those activities which strengthen and improve community, state, national and world conditions.  Save the Family is proud to partner with the Las Noches Women’s Club!

THE LAS NOCHES WOMEN’S CLUB REALLY HELPS SAVE FAMILIES!

FROM THE DESK OF JACKI TAYLOR, CEO

Dear Family,

If you’ve been following the news in Arizona and around the country, you probably know about the cuts the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) made to many programs. Over the last four years, funding has been focused largely on ending Veteran and chronic homelessness for single adult homeless persons; we have experienced a 14% reduction in government funding to support our families. Despite this, during that same four years, we were able to increase the number of families served by 34% (from 350 to 470). This was only possible through your support!

On Saturday, August 6th hundreds of families served by our organization attended our annual Back 2 School Bash. Since 2007 the event has been sponsored by The Turnbow Foundation, a Mesa-based foundation committed to improving the lives of disadvantaged children and their families. This year they donated $5,000 to match the value for backpack and school supplies donations from the community.

The excitement from the kids spread to the staff and volunteers who were there to handout the supplies. Due to the Turnbow Foundation’s generous matching donation, Save the Family was able to provide 337 children with the supplies needed to start the new school year off right.

“This is an effective and important collaboration for the children and families we serve,” said Save the Family CEO Jacki Taylor.  “When the children go to school with all the supplies they need, their focus can be on learning.”

Dear Family,You can count on us to be there for Homeless Families. Before it gets too hot, we need your help! As you may have heard, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Develolpment (HUD) recently made some drastic funding cuts to family and youth homeless programs. While Save the Family was not directly impacted, we are anticipating an increase of 50 families in our next fiscal year (which begins July 1) . This will have us serving well over 500 families next year. We cannot do this without the help of private gifts. Every dollar counts. Every family matters. You can help us by contribuing in a meaningful way, by volunteering, advocating for us, and spreading the word about our upcoming opportunities. Since 1988, we have had a wonderful relationship with our East Valley residents and business partners, we hope you will continue to support us this coming year when your help is crucial now more than ever. From the bottom of our hearts.......thank you!My Best,

In January Save the Family started using the service opportunity web site “JustServe” to post various volunteer opportunities for the whole community. JustServe.org is a service provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints that matches volunteers from the community at large, with opportunities to serve. Volunteers who sign up can search for service opportunities in the local community geographically, by project type, skills required and age requirements.

Save the Family has posted numerous volunteer opportunities, all with tremendous response. We have had volunteer groups schedule “Welcome Home – Paint and Clean” projects, Eagle Scout Leadership projects, computer application instruction, baby showers, handmade birthday cards, birthday-in-a-bag kits, provide sack meals, clean and sanitize our class rooms, help at our thrift store, paint the banisters and host a variety of donation drives. One of the first postings Save the Family did was a need for a donation drive for paper products. The request posted at 10:55am and by 11:20am we had volunteers dropping off trunk loads of toilet paper and paper towels.

JustServe.org has greatly increased our volunteer efforts and the results are nothing short of spectacular!

Since the Escobedo at Verde Vista development opened in 2013, the Mesa Police Department has documented a significant drop not only in crime rates but overall police activity in the entire Escobedo Neighborhood. The 132 low-income housing unit complex is a unique public-private-nonprofit partnership among Save the Family, Gorman & Company, the Arizona Department of Housing, City of Mesa and West Mesa CDC.

“The number of serious crimes are down and overall law enforcement is less since the development opened,” said Mesa Police Commander John Williams. “The Escobedo at Verde Vista development and our relationship with Save the Family has made a significant impact on lowering crime rates in the neighborhood. We have a very strong relationship with Save the Family that is paying great dividends for the entire community.” Before Escobedo at Verde Vista opened, the vacant property attracted “a lot of activity, particularly drug-related activity,” Williams said. “Now when we get a call about suspicious activity, that’s a good call because it helps prevent crime.”

Save the Family Chief Executive Officer Jacki Taylor emphasized that developments like Escobedo at Verde Vista are designed “not only to provide affordable housing to individuals looking to rebuild their lives but also to enable us to become part of the community, as good neighbors, making real contributions through quality environments.”

“This is the type of partnership that works and works well,” Williams said. “It and others like it are making a difference.”

SAVE THE FAMILY SENDS HUNDREDS OF KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL IN STYLE…..

Our community is realizing the enormous impact of the HUD cuts. At a time when beds for homeless families are shrinking, 51 additional families are slipping into homelessness every week in Maricopa County.

In response, Save the Family has embarked a plan to expand our rapid re-housing program. Through our combined housing programs and supportive services, we will assist over 650 homeless and impoverished families this year.

Community support is more crucial now than at any point in our organization’s 28 year history.  Thank you for continuing to help us as we work to address and end homelessness and poverty for hundreds of families in our community.
