St. Anne’s Catholic Church Mass Schedule
2 | ST. ANNE CHURCH
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In today’s Gospel Jesus teaches His disciples what many would consider the fundamental prayer of the Christian life, the Our Father. It’s one of the first prayers we learn as a child, and for good reason – it encompasses all the spiritual needs that we have as a people in relationship with God. We are praying that God always be first in our lives, that His Will be done, that we be provided for in our needs, and that we be protected against all spiritual danger. I en-courage us all to reflect deeply on those words that we pray so often – it can be a fruitful prayer in and of itself.
The Our Father is a fundamental spoken prayer of the Mass, but did you know that we also pray in other ways, even physically? This is the beautiful thing about the Catholic Mass – we are lifting up our pray-ers to God not just with our words, but with our minds, hearts and bodies as well. How do we do this?
Genuflection: Genuflection is defined as the bending down on one knee before the awesomeness of God’s presence. We’re probably in the habit of genuflecting before the tabernacle as we enter or leave our pew. We bend down on the right knee as a profound act of reverence before the presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. It can also be a beautiful moment of unit-ing our hearts to Him if we are able to do it mindfully. When you enter any Catholic church, look for the tab-ernacle, where Jesus waits for you (it’s marked by a red candle nearby), and show reverence to Him by bending the knee.
Beating of the breast: This is a gesture that not many people do nowadays but, I believe, should be re-vived. It’s most commonly done during the Confiteor at the beginning of Mass, when we recall our sins and ask for God’s pardon and mercy: “I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned…” We beat our breast three times, each time the word “fault” is spoken in the following: “Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.” We do this as a recognition that we are sinners in need of God’s mercy, hearkening back to the beating of the breast that repentant sinners would do throughout the Scriptures.
Bowing: If you follow along in the missalette during the Creed, then you probably notice the instruction to bow the head at the words “and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.” You probably notice me bowing as well. It’s not a
gesture reserved only for the priest, however. By bow-ing, we express reverence for the mystery of the Incarna-tion, when God became man in the person of Jesus Christ. On the Feast of the Annunciation (March 25) and on Christmas (December 25), we replace the bow with a genuflection, in order to show greater reverence for the days when we actually celebrate the coming of Jesus into the world, either at His conception or at His birth.
Act of reverence before Communion: We are asked to make an act of reverence as we approach the altar to receive the Eucharist. It’s similar to the act of respect we might show to a king as we approach his throne, only in this case we are approaching someone greater, the King of kings and Lord of lords. We express this reverence with a simple bow of the head before receiving.
I would encourage us all, if we haven’t already done so, to incorporate these gestures more fully into our worship at Mass. Gestures allow our bodies to worship along with our hearts, minds and souls. With an understanding of why we do them, it will greatly enrich your experience of the Mass and make your relationship with Christ more fruitful.
God bless,
Fr. Chris Shofner

Seven Secrets of Successful Stewards By Paul Wilkes
Catholic Update, Liguori Publica!ons, One Liguori Drive, Liguori, MO
63057-9999, 2015
Good stewardship is not a formula or a specific recipe. “To four parts !me, and two parts talent, sprinkle three parts treas-
ure over the top, and serve.” Not at all. Various !mes in our lives, we will be more able to give of our !me, talents, our
treasure.
The busy young execu!ve may not have the !me to sit in a re!rement home and play bingo every morning, but she may
have the organiza!onal skills to put that ministry together. A re!red couple with a fixed income may have to be careful
about their limited finances, but they may be able to spend !me in the daycare center with children of working parents.
The good steward prac!ces the truism, “Do what you can. Not what you can’t.” Different situa!ons in the lives of our
families, our parishes, our communi!es will call forth different applica!ons of those three trusty pillars of good steward-
ship: !me, talent, treasure.
I know of a North Carolina plas!c surgeon who contributes generously to his Church and also spends two weeks a year in a
remote village in the Caribbean, employing his talent: repairing cle$ palates and disfiguring burns that have marginalized
these unpaying but no less need pa!ents.
I know of a woman who cleans offices in Alaska who contributes her “widow’s mite” each week and also beau!fully ar-
ranges the altar flowers and lovingly irons the altar cloths used in the liturgies.
I know of people with a short a'en!on span who perform ministries that call on them to see many people in a limited
amount of !me , and I know people who have enormous pa!ence and can listen for hours.
Each is a good-and sensible-steward. Each looks inward at what she or he has to offer and offers it. Good stewards are
inten!onal stewards, consciously se(ng aside for God’s use some por!on of their !me, talent, treasure, but in propor!on
that make sense at that point in their life’s journey.
And good stewards don’t envision themselves as soloists. Rather, they are happy to take their places as members of a vast
chorus of goodness, with a rich combina!on of gi$s making a joyful noise.

Special Projects Fund
The Church of St. Anne’s has Special Projects Fund that is
to be used primarily for capital improvement projects.
Recently within the past year, dona!ons to this fund have
helped with the cost of resurfacing our parish and school
parking lots and making roof repairs on our buildings. We
are currently in process of raising funds to replace the
carpet (approximately $30,000). We have already raised
a third of that total, but appeal to you to raise the remain-
der.
If you would like to donate or have ques!ons, please con-
tact the Parish Office at 665-3811. Checks can be made
out to St. Anne’s Special Projects Fund.
Thank you for your con!nued generosity toward our par-
ish and school!
