50|50 Summary

IntroductionThe RIBA East Midlands is developing a celebration in 2010 looking at 50 of the best architectural schemes and clusters in the East Midlands since 1960, entitled ‘50|50’ . The project is supported by East Midlands Developent agency, emda, Heritage Lottery Fund and Ibstock. Brick Ltd.

Through 50|50 we seek to uncover, showcase and above all celebrate the brilliant and diverse architecture which the East Midlands has to offer while also:

Raising awareness of modern architecture, encouraging and growing young people’s interest in design

and architecture, highlighting the context in which the Region’s recent built

heritage was created.

In order to achieve this we will be delivering educational events at schools across the region, touring an exhibition to each of the counties in the region throughout 2010 and 2011, and producing a full colour publication.  50 projects and places have been selected and the public will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite building in the region during the course of the exhibition.

Exhibition The exhibition will visit each county in the Region, including a tour of the County Shows in May /June 2011 as well as longer visits to venues in Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire commencing in 2010. The exhibition stand has been designed by Lincoln University Undergraduate student, Charlotte O’Reilly as the result of a competition for 2nd year students studying Museum and Exhibition Design.

Publication We have decided that rather than try to produce a glossy book version of the exhibition, the publication would be better suited as a guidebook, which illustrates and explains our exemplary buildings and also links them together through maps to make architectural tours. An online version of this will also be produced.

EducationEducational events will take place at schools across the region through 50|50|50 (50 buildings: 50 years past, 50 years forward). The project will engage pupils with their built environment by linking them to one of the 50 buildings in their area and inspiring them to think about what their local architecture may look like 50 years forward.
