    LEARNING TO SURVIVE

    My name is Dr. Russell Horine, and I am about to

    introduce you to a world the vast majority of civilians willnever know exists. Its the world inhabited by professionalsoldiers, serious streetfighters, government black bag op-eratives and inner-city cops all of who face violence anddanger every day, and deal with it in ways you could neverdiscover on your own.

    But the purpose of this special report is notto wowyou with the exploits of men in real combat. No. Thepurpose of this special report is much more serious, and

    much more personalto you. Think of it this way: If youwere in a situation where, exactly one short hour from now,you had to go out and face someone who wanted to killyou, then reading this report is exactlythe way youd wantto spend that hour. In one hour, you will know morethan99% of American men about surviving dangerous situa-tions and fighting to win.

    My wish is that this report becomes a standard partof everygood mans wardrobe I want to see scuffed and

    dog-eared copies of it inside executives briefcases, on thenightstands of family men, and in the knapsacks of youngmen just going out into the cold, cruel world. What youlearn here is more than self-defense its tactical sur-

    I know what youre thinking: Where do I get offsaying this? Well, the answer is simple: I run aninternational company that has put me in constant

    close-quarters contact with the most dangerousmenin the world. Sometimes these men find us; some-times we seek them out. We have over two dozenrespected, famous and feared fighting experts in ourstable of talent and I will introduce you to themthroughout this report.

    perament who is nevertheless undefeatedin ille-gal pit fights (for money) against larger, meanerand more skilled opponents.

    Youll meet Vladimir Vasiliev, a former-Rus-sian super soldier in the elite Spetznaz secretservice of the Russian Army (so well-trained in ev-

    ery aspect of combat that even the dreaded KGBwere terrifiedof them). When Vladimir escaped toCanada from Russia, everybodywanted him in-cluding the US military, eager to learn his combatsecrets but he came to us.

    no special skills no physical advantages ofsize or agility and no killer instinct andgive you a set of skills you can learn quicklyand withoutintense training.     Most American men neverlearn to fight. A

    handful take some boxing at the YMCA, or a coupleyears worth of bullshit karate, or learn a few trickswhile trading punches in high school fist-fights.     so they can rob you and do horrible things to yourfamily. The real bad guys out there dont wait foryou to hit them first, they dont play fair, and theyloveit when you step back and throw a John Wayne-style roundhouse punch their way. Youll be on theground before your fist passes your shoulder.

    Get this straight, right now: You cant waituntil youre in trouble to learn how to defend your-self. Its too lateat that point. The bullying crimi-

    nals of this modern world arent getting in your facebecause they want to play around.     So lets get started. As I said, there are fivecategories I want to cover with you. Each is criti-cally important. The first 2 are about what goes onin your head what we call the warrior mindset.Veryimportant and, in most cases, all youll ever

    need. The final three categories are hard-core (butincredibly simple) physical skills you can use in afight to get away, to gain thinking time, to makeyour attacker stop and think twice and, if neces-sary, to put him down. So he wont get up again tocause you problems.

    Some of this is pretty vicious, so consideryourself forewarned. But do notbe deluded theis the REAL THING. Its not playtime anymore. Ihave assigned myself the task of educating youabout the realities and tactics of handling yourselfin dangerous situations, and damn it, thats what

    Im gonna do. All youneed to do is pay attention.

    ZONES OF AWARENESS

    Here we go:

    Your Zones Of Awareness: The very first and easi-est thing we teach anyone getting into this stuff is how tobring your awareness up to speed. Cops, soldiers,streetfighters, agents they all take this for granted, butthey too had to learnit early in their chosen careers.

    Mostpeople walk around in a state of un-awareness in other words, they are obliviousto the world aroundthem. Thats how you get carjacked and robbed. The badguys love it when they spot someone wandering around the

    street not paying attention to their surroundings thatmakes their job so much easier.So, the first thing you must do is learn to adopt the

    zones of awareness that professionals use to stay ontop of the world around them. Each group has its own wayof describing these zones some call them states, oreven lines in the sand. But it all comes down to the samething: Fine-tuning your sense of whats going on aroundyou.

    Here are the general four states you need to knowabout:

    16a. White. This is the ostrich with his head in the

    sand, the shopper hauling armloads of grocer-ies out to her car without noticing whos aroundher, the guy strolling down the street with hisgirlfriend oblivious of whos following, youathome with the tv on and no idea of whats

    going on right outside your door. This is thestate of un-awareness most people exist in.Theyre in a world all to their own. When theywalk into a restaurant or bar, they head straightto a table and sit down, and couldnt tell youwhether the other patrons were Yuppies, a gangof Hells Angels, or talking dogs. Soldiers andcops are NEVER in this state its simply toodangerous a way to live. Even when asleep, the

    professional has his antennae out, constantlyaware of where he is and whats going on

    around him. This white state is the state ofthe victim. Completely oblivious, completelyvulnerable.

    b. Yellow. This is the resting state of the savvyman. Most civilians reach something like thisstate onlyimmediately after being robbed or

    beaten up, and its in the form of near-hystericalparanoia. Thats not a good thing. Better thatyou simply learn to be in the yellow state

    of casual awareness all the time. Its easy youjust stay aware of whats going on aroundyou. If youre home, you notice when theres anunfamiliar noise inside the house, or out on theporch. You just register that somethingsdifferent. Outside, you are aware whos around

    you on the street, inside a room, in the nextroom if you can. When you enter a bar orrestaurant, you simply notice who the other

    people are, register any suspicious types, andstayaware of them and their movements. In astrange city, you jack up your yellow stateeven more, so you never suddenly find your-self in a bad part of town you notice whethershops are open or closed, whether the buildings

    are run-down or nice, whether the peoplearound you are friendly or giving you the eye.The perfect yellow state is NOT paranoid itswatchful. Aware. You become an active partof your surroundings. Heres a test: Withoutlooking up, can you describe the room youre inright now? The next time you go into a restau-rant, sit down at your table upon first enteringand close your eyes now, can you identify

    every other person in the place? As you walkdown the street, without looking behind you,can you describe whos walking a few stepsbehind? You need to constantly checkyourself for at least the next week before it willstart to become a natural part of your aware-ness. But a casually aware yellow state isthe resting state of the savvy man.

    c. Red. This is the state professionals immediatelygo into when danger has reared its ugly head. Ifyoure walking down the street, and you notice aguy following you, and you are surehe is aboutto accost you and cause trouble, you shouldimmediately enter the red state. That is thestate where you allow the adrenaline to pump,where you plan your moves, where you are to-tally prepared to act. Not understanding thisbe prepared for trouble state is whymost civil-ians get into trouble when faced with someone

    17ready to tear their head off, or asking for all theirmoney, or grabbing their wife, the average civiliansimply does not know what to do. He will getoutraged, maybe angry, probably scared buthe will not have a clue what to do. The bad guyscounton this they use surprise and shock as

    their primary weapons, knowingmost people willjust freeze up and go into a state of inactive panic.The red state, however, allows you to instantlygo into a state of mind where you will usewhatyou know about self-defense, without hesitation.When your yellow state tells you the situationrequires you to go into red, you shift gears andbecome a man ready for action.

    d. Black. This is the state of the professional athis most lethal. This is the combat soldier on

    the front line, the cop facing an armed suspect,the black bag agent coming up on his oppo-nent. And, its the regular guy at home,investigating a noise inside his house at nightand coming across a bad guy there to hurt hisfamily. When your yellow state flashes red,

    and as you prepare to take action you realizeyou mustgo to the wall to protect yourself oryour loved ones you must enter the blackstate. If, taking the bad guy out, you must uselethal force, then thats what you do.

    Thats a quick overview of the states. Now, Iwant to talk to you about taking action. Its thehardest thingfor a civilian to understand. Yet, know-ing what it means will save your life.

    PHILOSOPHYI learned while training with local SWAT cops, about

    the concept of drawing a line inthe sand. This hasnothing to do with bluffing. What it means is, you have inmind a distance a movement or a change in the situa-tionwhere you automaticallydecide to act.

    In your red state, this action may be: To leave. Just turn and walk away. To run. To break for the nearest exit and get the hell

    out of there. To confront. To breach the codes of politeness and

    say What do you want? Stop right there and tell mewhat youre doing.

    To attack. When the situation has gone beyondyourother options, you do what you needto do to endthethreat.

    The average guy doesnt know when to act. Someonegets in your face, or challenges you, or takes something ofyours, or threatens your family, or breaks into your houseat night most guys simply do not have a clue what todo next. Most guys live in that dumb Hollywood fantasy

    where because they are a decent guy they will some-how know what to do in the clutch.The truth is more brutal than that. The truth is,

    mostguys will wander into the hallway at night, see a big

    20guy standing there in a mask, and they will wetthem-selves in panic. Before they can make a move, theywill get taken down, possibly be killed. Most guysare in denial about this. They talk about having thatloaded gun next to the bed, and how they will blowaway anyone they catch breaking into their house.

    But they wont. They will be utterly surprised, theywill have no plan in their head, and if they shootanyone it will be themselves in the foot or worse their visiting nephew sleepwalking.

    Have you ever investigated a noise in yourhouse without taking a weapon with you? Most menhave. What would you doif you found one or twoguys in masks rummaging through your kitchen?Yell at them? Order them out? Threaten to call the

    police? Youd be laughed at. Or killed.Criminals all share the same philosophy:

    They are looking for the easy pickins. They goafter the little old lady who looks defenseless, or theguy with his head in the clouds, or the house withthe easy-to-pick locks. They do not lurk around look-ing to take on people who look like they can handlethemselves. They do not necessarily want a fightthey want money. Or your wife. Those who want

    kicks may actually look for a fight, but they willpick you out onlyif they believe they can take you.And dont think your size will save you when youdont know how to fight, the bad guys can SMELL iton you. And in the real world, fighters know thatsize is irrelevantto who wins. Often, its the bigguy who goes down first. (Most of the cops I know,after a year or two of experience, tell me they NEVERwant to fight the little guys. Too dangerous.)

    So what does this meanin the real world? Ihave a personal story. Soon after I gave my familya little pep talk about being aware, my wife Helen

    and my two young sons (4 and 6 years old) were inan underground parking lot, leaving a movie theatre.Helen, in her new yellow state of awareness, no-ticed a man following themabout twenty yards be-hind she would have never noticed before, neverlooked around, never believed that trouble would ever

    stalk her and her kids. But she noticed this guy,and drew a line in the sand she decided shewould walk down the aisle they were in, cut acrossthrough some cars, and head for her car and if theguy followed, she would act. He didfollow them,silently cutting through the cars behind them, andas soon as Helen reached her car, she turned andstared directly at him. Just stared with purpose,letting him know he had been noticed and recog-

    nized.The result? He stopped, lowered his head,

    and quickly turned around and walked away. Helengot in the car and called security and learned thatsomeone had been carjackedin that parking lot theday before, and suspicious men had been reportedlurking.

    I know this sounds almost like common sense,but it isnt. What would yourwife or girlfriend have

    done in that situation? Would she even have evennoticedbeing followed? If she did notice, what wouldshe have done?

    Therefore, when confronting a suspect armed

    with a knife, the cop draws an imaginary line in thesand about 15 feet away. He orders the suspect todrop the knife. If the suspect doesnt respond, butdoesnt move closer, the cop will negotiate. How-ever, if the guy doesmove closer, even slowly, withthe knife, and crosses that line in the sand, thecop will consider it a lethal attack and will use le-thal force to counteract it. Cops learned this afterlosingofficers who didnt realize how fast a man

    can move and stab, and who continued to negotiatewhile the suspect edged closer and then lunged.The cops didnt know where to draw the linebetweennegotiation and action. Now they do.

    Its like a trip wire. My response to a threatis automatically triggeredwhen that threat crossesa certain point. For example: If someone is in myhouse at night, with my family home, I will immedi-ately use lethal force. Immediately. I will not talk to

    him, I will not identify him, I will not warn him. If Imake a mistake, I am prepared to live with the con-sequences. But that person couldonlyhave gotteninto my house, with my family home, after killing mydog outside, after disabling my alarm system, andafter coming through locked entrances.

    This may seem shocking to you. In a whitezoned world where nothing bad can ever happen you,it wouldbe shocking behavior. But we dont live in

    that world. Last week, in my town, there were adozen burglaries, a homicide, several rapes, acarjacking, a couple of gang fights, a drive-by shoot-

    ing. There are no areas in town that are free of crime.No one is armor-plated safe from worry.

    Its the oppositeof being paranoid, actually.Its having the freedomfrom indecision that para-lyzes most men. Its being absolutely confidentabout how to act in anysituation, no matter how

    unexpected. Its being a man in a dangerousworld.

    But in the scenario part of the training, where

    you are placed in actual situationsthat cops faceevery day, I failed miserably because I was in-decisive. In the scenario I was in, I tried to talk toan old man who seemed crazy and was threateningme, but I had no trip wire decision skills. I let himget too close and I was killed. The experiencedSWAT cops laughed at me the guys I had humili-ated on the range would have neverlet the crazyguy get so close. I learned my lesson.

    world, real fights last only a few short seconds. Thereare no trading of blows, no toe-to-toe swing fests,no benign wrestling. When real fighters get in afight, they mean to take you down in the firstmove,and finishyou with the second. Bam, bam and itsover.

    And theres no gamesmanship, no fair play,no rules at all.

    And the professionals know you cannot relyon a gun to save you. In the Levels Of Forceunderstood by soldiers and cops, there are just fourtruths: You cannot rely on your gun to be there when

    you need it.

    You cant shoot an obnoxious person who isntlethally threatening you.

    Guns cant make you safe without lots of trainingand cold trip wire decision-making skills.

    So you MUST have a minimum of physi-cal skillsyou can use when in danger.

    report.First Moves: Im going to highlight several of our stable

    The idea of the first move is simple: You want toput your opponent into an instant, blinding world of intensepain, immediately disabling his ability to fight back. At thesame time, you do not want to get hit yourself. You aretaking the action to him.

    tion, you act. (Paul, by the way, in his thousands ofstreetfights all over the world from the back alleysof Manila to the sidewalks of Brooklyn has almostneverbeen in a fight that lasted longer than a few

    seconds.)Almost all fighters agree on the basics of your

    first move. You must Hit, Angle, and Put HimOff-Balance. If you are being attacked, that meansyou parry the incoming blow, step off center to avoidthe incoming energy, and strike your opponent from

    the side where his balance is weakest. If you haveinitiated the strike, you strike, move off center, andcontinue the strike to knock him off his balance.

    Chris Clugston has a greatmove he calls the pop up. Heinvented it after watching a lion takedown a Cape buffalo. (See Figure

    A.) Its perfect when you are facedwith someone coming at you intenton wrestling you to the ground(where most fights end up). Youwant to step aside (even half a stepis fine, just to get out of the trainspath), lower your body, use yourback foot to root yourself, andpush up with your handsas if you

    were shoving a sack of cement offa window ledge. This redirec-tion of incoming energy allowseven a small man to take amuch heavier man off his feetand reeling backwards.

    The Eye-Jab

    NOTE: The Eye Jab is a great technique

    to buy time... merely grazing one eyeballwill make both eyes water profusely.

    Paul Vunak has a simple technique to bothbuy time when you are surprised by an attacker,and to stop the aggression in its tracks. Its the

    eye jab. (See Figure B) This is notthe 3 Stooges all you really want is the flinch response. If youmiss his eyes, he will still blink he cant help it,

    its an automatic nervous sys-tem response. If you justtouch his eyes, they will im-mediately water and blur hisvision severely. If you hit witha full strike, you winthe fight.

    (You still need a finishingmove, of course. See below.)

    Ray Ellingsen explainsthe off center concept verywell. He insists you NEVERgo straight up against any at-tack its just senseless. Nomartial artist runs up againstdirect incoming energy. You

    go off-line, and chop emdown.

    By stepping aside, youblunt any incoming energy(and more easily avoid gettinghit) you cut your opponentsoffensive weapons in half(byputting an entire side of himaway from you) and you

    open him up to three obvi-ous, devastating strikes(Figure C):1. Use your knee or foottogo low, and come downhard on his knee. (This is a

    very vulnerable part of any man, no matter howbig or muscular he is. A forceful sidewaysstrike to the knee will topple King Kong in-

    stantly.)2. Use your fist or elbowto go middle, and hit

    Tom Proctor invented his shieldas a way to defend himself againstbigger and more skilled men in thecage fights he was in where therewas no place to run. (See Figure D)The shield is simple and easy to do

    but very effectivein keeping anattacker at bay, protecting yourselffrom blows (especially when sur-prised), and opening him up to one ofthe above strikes. The Muay Thaikickboxers who fought Tom called thishis Voodoo Defense, because theywere unable to get by it.

    The bottom-line skill you must

    learn in any altercation is that youmust start the action, and never relyon being reactive, responding only toactual physical assault. Know yourboundaries, and when they areviolated and you are forced into action,ACT. If you are jumped or attackedfrom behind, get off-line as quickly asyou can and disable your attacker.

    Never willingly allow yourself to bestruck.

    FINISH MOVESRemember that most fights end in a matter of sec-

    onds. If you are unprepared, or oblivious to the fact you areeven under attack, you will quickly be put down and uncon-

    scious. That is unacceptable in todays world, especiallywhen people are depending on youto protect them.

    On the other hand, once you realize you arein a fight when all your other options are gone, and its time to act you, too, must act within the space of just a few seconds.Parry or hit, step off-center, and strike, putting him off bal-ance and in pain or shock. Then finish the job. No matterhow quick you are in the first second, you will lose the fightif you allow your advantage to pass. Finish it!

    Ive chosen the finishi ng moves of sev-eral fighters here, based on their utter simplicity and easeof learning.     The Head Butt

    NOTE:Grab the back of your opponents

    neck and thrust the top of your headupward into the nose of your opponent

    while you pull his head downward.

    One of the bestfinishing moves is thehead-butt (see Figure E). As Paul Vunakteaches, you can do it wrongand still winthe fight. Your head has the weight and sol-idness of a bowling ball, and by simplysmashing your upper forehead against theface of your opponent, you are hitting himwith tremendous disabling force. (Warning:Do notclose your eyes while delivering ahead-butt, or you may seriously disorientyourself.) Just grab his ears or the hair atthe back of his head, and ram your 20 poundskull into his nose. Paul: In reality, as soonas you deliver this blow, its lights out andthe partys over. Even if you misshis nose,anywhereyou do hit will deliver knockout-strength trauma.

    Paul also likes the ear slap, sayingits like taking a sledge hammerto the sideof someones head. Dont punch, youll hurtyour hand. Just cup your hand and slaphard, creating a disorienting and disablingvacuum blow.

    The Choke Hold

    NOTE:Pressing the bicep and forearm into

    either side of the windpipe will cut off the

    blood supply to the head. By locking your

    arms together and pressing down on the back

    of your opponents head, you will knock him

    unconscious in seconds. Use caution with this!

    Another move, favored byMark Hatmaker (and others),is the choke hold. But bewarned, as always youmust take responsibility for

    delivering any finishingblow. The choke hold is dan-gerous, and if you do not re-lease him when he passesout, you can kill him. This isnot aboutkilling I am not akiller, and I dont believe youare, either. This is about self-defense and survival when

    all other options are gone.If you are attacked by a larger,meaner, and more skilled op-ponent, and you cannot runaway, you mustbe preparedto put him down to save yourown life in the fastest way pos-sible, regardless of the threatto hishealth.

    In the choke hold (FigureF), you cut off the blood sup-ply to the head via the ca-rotid artery. Get behind him,put your elbow under his chin,so your bicep covers one sideof his neck and your forearmthe other, and lock your otherhand over your arm and

    The Thigh Kick

    Hitting the thigh produces an im-

    mensely painfulcharley horse that willtake him to his knees, unable to walk.(Youve seen this injury in footballgames.) The groin is a low-percentagestrike, because men can quickly closetheir thighs to protect the valuablesthere but if you have an open shot,take it. Its instant game over. (Idont like the way many store front

    martial art classes teach women to kickmen in the balls. It looks easy in themovies, but if the guy is in an aggres-sive stance, it is almost impossibletokick him in the groin. You can do it ifhe is unawareyou are kicking, but thatis not the situation you usually findyourself in. Still, the groin can be anexcellent target, as shown below.)

(Figure H) The shin is a verytender place, again with no muscleover it nomatter how beefy your opponent is. And thefoot can be crunched easily, unless coveredby steel boots. (Taylor also points to the foot

    as your escape hatch if you are attackedfrom behind and held in a bear hug if youcant get your hands into his eyes, or behindyou to twist his testicles, then stomp downon his foot with your heel. Hell let go.)

    The Knee Pop

    Against WeaponsFighting bare-handed against weapons: Next to fight-

    ing against multiple opponents, this is the most asked-foradvice we get. I cannot show you how to fight against

    multiple opponents here, because the skills take more prac-tice and more finessethan I can show you in print. Youneed to see a videotape to understand how to easily out-gun more than one attacker. (I have several recommenda-tions below.) I also cannot show you how to disarm some-one pointing a gun at you, because it is too complextoexplain in print (though still easy enough to learn whenseen). You need to see a video demonstration. (I suggestRandy Wanner and Bob Taylors Gun And Knife Disar-

    mament tape also suggested by Col. Tom Brown, pub-lisher of Soldier Of Fortune Magazine. You can call TRSand ask for it.)

    I can give you clear advice about fighting bare-handed against someone armed with a knife. As PaulVunak says, run. You will be cutin a fight against a blade

    know that going in. Never mind that Hollywood says youcan fight against a knife and not get bloody. Its just nottrue in the real world.

    However, sometimes you cannot run, and you musttake immediate offensive actionagainst the knife, whetheryou get cut or not. Your life is at stake (and possibly the

    Again, this is high-risk fighting, but if youare faced with trying something, or dying, you nowat least have options.
