VISITOR’S NOTES1. KFBG is open from 09:30 to 17:00 hours. Please note that

entry is not permitted after 16:00 hours.

2. Advance online booking is necessary for a visiting group of 20 or more people.

3. To enable visitors to view the beautiful scenery of the upper hillside in a safe and relaxed manner, without disturbing the wildlife too much, a limited shuttle bus service is provided. Tickets are available at the Reception on a first-come, first-served basis. For details of the bus schedule, please call the Reception at 2483 7200 during office hours. Come early to secure a ticket.

4. Limited parking spaces are available but advance online reservation is essential.

5. The Sun Garden Cafe at KFBG serves vegetarian food and drinks. If you have any questions about the cafe, please call 2488 9945.

KFBG is a Nature Sanctuary. To help us care for this place, please observe the Visitors’ Guidelines and the Bylaw displayed at the Reception Area.

OUR PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: - The KFBG site offers guided tours and walking trails leading visitors

through beautiful, peaceful theme gardens and forest areas;

- Regular education programmes, which help people to connect deeply with nature, often using mindfulness and art as tools;

- The Orchid Conservation Programme which protects and builds assurance stocks of rare orchids; orchids can be seen in the gardens and in The Gloria Barretto Orchid Sanctuary in the Middle area of the nature reserve.

- Our pioneering biodiversity studies and advisory work in South China have helped to establish and enhance Nature Reserves, and to create stronger communities and sustainable livelihoods for villagers living around the reserves;

- Our forest restoration and monitoring work has helped to conserve the Hainan Gibbon, the world’s rarest primate;

- Promotion of local sustainable agriculture through farming and permaculture-design training. We also run a Farmers’ Market at Central Star Ferry Pier every Sunday, linking farmers to consumers;

- The Native Tree Nursery which produces tree seedlings to facilitate KFBG’s reforestation projects at KFBG and around Hong Kong;

- The KFBG Wild Animal Rescue Centre which treats and rehabilitates rescued wildlife and runs a captive breeding programme for endangered turtles; over 50,000 wild animals have been rescued since 1994.

- The Green Hub, at the Old Tai Po Police Station, is a restored and repurposed a Grade I Historic Building. It is a centre for promoting local economies and low-carbon living programmes.

The Kadoorie brothers, Sir Horace and Lord Lawrence, sowed the seeds of KFBG when they founded the Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Association (KAAA) in 1951. Kadoorie Farm was established in 1956. In the early days, the KAAA helped people, particularly immigrants, to gain self-sufficiency through agriculture.

At one point, over one third of all Hong Kongers were immigrants. The brothers, in partnership with the Government, strove to “help people to help themselves”, and gave newly-arrived farmers breeding stock, seeds, tools, training, agricultural buildings, houses, roads, paths, bridges and micro-loans.

As Hong Kong had evolved, so did the organisation. In 1995, KFBG was established as a unique public corporation funded by the Kadoorie Foundation. Since then, we have been focusing on nature conservation, nature education and sustainable living promotion in Hong Kong and South China.
