PRESIDENT’S CORNER

A er the Lent we spring back fresh, renewed, strengthened. The short yet meaningful me was a gi , as we, in our own ways, communed with our Creator, forged and kept peace with ourselves, love ones and neighbors. Happily, we get back to holding the reins of responsibility for the last semester of the Rotary Year. At present, the challenges are just as great! We look forward a successful DISTAS for our very own Governor Linda Winter. And we will make it happen…as usual!

Our DISTAS Overall Chair, PP Chris Peralta, has given our membership the opportunity to choose the commi ees to work on. Let us once again check our assigned tasks. We have made our choices, let us draw the energy from the force within us. Once again let all our hidden talents and gi s surface for the “ DISTAS – The Rotary of Baguio way!”

The District is con nuously invi ng Rotarians to have a taste of the historical, mys que, beau ful and awesome Portugal!. Of course this is the Rotary Interna onal Conven on at Lisbon, Portugal on June 23-26, 2013. Right now the Schengen visa processing is open at the Spanish Embassy. Conven on package rate is USD2,535.00 per person. (With small print: subject to change without prior no ce!)

If interested, please do get in touch with our fellow Rotarians in the District and/or your travel agencies.

RI announced that as of 31 March, Matching Grant and District Simplifi ed Grant applica ons are no longer being accepted. For 30-31 March 500 Grant Applica ons were received by RI. Rotarians are now encouraged to begin submi ng global grant applica ons via the online system.

Luckily, we do have our very own Matching Grant Guru, PP Gerard Audineau, along with our equally passionate members, Dir. David Rees, PE Uwe Koeller and Rtn. Naas Demy enaere, who submi ed two (2) matching grants before the deadline! All we have to do is to wait for the approval and again new service to make a diff erence in other people’s lives is going to happen! Again, thank you gentlemen.

Much is accomplished over coff ee huh!?!

The Board will present their accomplishment report today. Let us sit ght and have a good look at the picture of the Rotary Club of Baguio. I am truly grateful for a high ac on quarter! We labored hard! We con nuously served above self! We had a grand 75th celebra on! We were united all the way! What can I say? Two thumbs up for all of you good Rotarians! Peace!

THIS MONTH

April is Magazine Month

……a me to celebrate the global network of Rotary’s offi cial magazines, which provide valuable informa on to 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide.

The RI Bylaws require all club members to subscribe to The Rotarian or a Rotary regional magazine. Rotary leaders, district governors, and club presidents are encouraged to support magazine editors in their country or region by submi ng story ideas, promo ng readership, encouraging mely subscrip on payments, and assis ng with other communica on eff orts.

The Rotary World Magazine Press consists of 32 magazines from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe that inform, inspire, and entertain in 23 languages. In addi on to The Rotarian, Rotary’s English-language fl agship publica on, it off ers magazines such as Vida Rotaria (Argen na), Rotary in Bulgaria, and The Rotary-no-Tomo (Japan) and the Philippine Rotary (Philippines)

The second issue of “The Na onal Rotarian” appeared in July 1911. It contained a “Presidents Corner,” news from the clubs and more than 20 adver sements. Soon a er, the magazine started its monthly publica on schedule. By ac on of the R.I. Conven on in 1922, the offi cial name was changed to “The Rotarian”. In February of 1955, the magazine published its 1,000,000th issue.

“One of the most powerful infl uences in the civiliza on of this day is the press, and yet many American journals whose tremendous circula ons cons tute indubitable proof of their infl uence and power, wield such infl uence and with about the same degree of tender regard to principle and truth as would a bar room full of drunken sailors. It is to be hoped that The Na onal Rotarian may possess an infl uence and the power to spread the principles of Rotary throughout the land and that its publishers may never become unmindful of the fact that the acquisi on of infl uence and power means the assump on of great responsibility.” …Paul Harris (researched by Wolfgang Ziegler)

The primary purpose of The Na onal Rotarian is to

provide a means for the exchange of ideas between

Rotarians throughout the world, not to give the

na onal offi cers an opportunity to express their views.

These messages are not wri en merely to fi ll space;

nevertheless we look forward to the day when they

will be literally crowded out by surging mobs of virile

Rotarian ideas struggling to be heard. (Paul Harris, in

The Rotarian, January 1912)

Each issue of The Rotarian contains feature ar cles,

columns, and departments about, or of interest to,

Rotarians worldwide. Seventeen Nobel Prize winners

and 19 Pulitzer Prize winners – from Mahatma Ghandi

to Kurt Vonnegut Jr. – have wri en for the magazine.

Following the ac on taken by the Council on

Legisla on April 29, 2010 in Chicago, Rotarians in

the United States and Canada now have the choice

between receiving a print or an electronic copy through

the internet of The Rotarian magazine. But don’t look

for the print version to vanish any me soon. According

to RI Director José Alfredo Sepúlveda, suppor ng print

magazines is essen al to Rotary’s communica ons

strategy.

It was a gloomy Saturday a ernoon when we had our gathering in the Powerhouse of the Baguio Country Club. The sun was out and occasional outpouring of rain in the City of Baguio. Rtn Naas Demy enaere facilitated the mee ng as the Program Coordinator. Rtn Mariver Agayas delivered a heart warming and inspiring invoca on. This was followed by the singing Pambansang Awit in acapela and the Rotary Hymn with the usual accompaniment.
