The members of the Board made their 3rd Quarter Report last September 6, 2013 and most of the projects targeted for the term has been accomplished! I give my most sincere thanks to the working Board. You did great and you all are looking good! To the membership, thank you too, for making this possible.

First of all, Treasurer Marilyn Barredo made her report and she happily informedthemembership that theClub isfinancially sound. (Soundas in“loud” sound!) With most of the projects already accomplished, it looks like the incoming Board for Rotary Year 2013-2014 will have funds for more projects.WedohavecollectiblesstillbutourTreasurerisnotgivingupondoing her task. As she always reminds: You know who you are!

Ofcourse, IncomingPresidentUweKoeller isallsmilesandnodsashewasgoingthroughthefinancialreport.Wecelebrated75thAnniversarybigtime,wedidhavemanycommunityprojects,wearegoodinourPolioPlusand a thumbs up on our TRF! For ten years Milt chaired International Services forSonoraSunriseRotary. In1974,he starteda group calledTheFlyingDoctors(LosMedicosVoladores),anorganizationwhich uptothepresent, flytoremoteareasofMexico insmallaircrafttohelpdelivermedicalcare.

Due to much needed medical care in the remote areas ofGuatemala,Honduras,ElSalvador,HaitiandPeru. Miltexpanded and organized teams of health care volunteers to these areas of Central and South America with help from United, TACA, American Airlines and Airline Ambassadors. There, they work in small hospitals, clinics and schools providingdentalrepairandeducation, eyeexamsandprovideneeded glasses, medical consulting, cataract surgery, andother major and minor surgery in ten day spans. As a non-medical person, he maintains all the surgery room equipment and trains locals in how to maintain the equipment. Approximately 50 percent of the volunteers on all trips are non-medical personal but are very enthusiastic and hardworkers.

Since 2003-2004, with a generous help from The WheelchairFoundation,Rotary,Lions,20/30club,andCoca-Cola of El Salvador , these groups teamed up and have helped obtain funding and distributed 2000 wheelchairs. They are now trying to complete another container of wheelchairs for Peru. With help from Mel Hanson of Modesto, California Rotary “Seeds Of Hope” program, he has given out approximately 300 pounds of seeds in clinics and to families in Central, South America, and this year, in Baguio City, Philippines, helping people to start their own gardens at home.

In February 2006 and again in 2012 there was a team of 20 members from local Rotary clubs that few to Peru to review a Rotary funded water project that Milt helped set up in 2002. There are medical teams scheduled through out 2013 to return to some of the same areas for work.

Rotary isan internationalorganization, andwhen Itravel for Rotary, I usually speak in English. But it has beenalongtimesincemylastEnglishexam, andwhenI am working in Evanston, I always have a Japanese interpreter. It is important to understand every word of themeetings, anditisimportantaswellthatthestaffunderstand what I am saying.

It was a new experience for me to speak Japanese to a group, and then hear my words spoken in English. Even now,Ifinditinteresting.Ihearnewwaysofexpressingmyself in English, and I also have a small glimpse of what it must be like not to speak Japanese.

But perhaps the most interesting moment cameearly on in my year as president-elect, when I was in ameetingwithRotarystaffmembers.Tobesurethatwe could communicate well, I had with me a Japanese interpreter. I spoke in Japanese, and she interpreted what I said into English. We had a pleasant and productivemeeting.

Afteritwasover, onememberofthestaffcameupto me and asked, “There is one word I heard you use manytimes in Japanese. Iwould like toknowwhat itmeans. What is the word ichiban?” I told her that ichiban in Japanese does not convey any philosophy or complicated thought. It simply means to be the best.

But it made me think. Of all the words I had used in Japanese, of all the words she had heard over and over, this was the word she had heard the most. I did notrealizeIhaduseditsooften.Butforme, thatoneword, ichiban, isessentialtohowIfeelaboutmyjobasa Rotarian, and as president of RI.

For me, Rotary service means being ichiban. It means doing your best, and being the best you can be. It means working as hard as you can – not for yourself, but for others. It means achieving as much as you can, tomakeotherpeople’slivesbetter.

Inthedictionary, ichibanmeans“best.”ButinRotary,“best” means something different. It means bringingService Above Self into all of your thinking. It means lookingatyourowneffort, notintermsofwhatitcostsyou, but in terms of what it can give. In this way, we are inspired to do so much more. It is our job to see to it that our Rotary service is ichiban – so that we do the most we can to build Peace Through Service.

When I was RI president, I said Rotary is a love story

in which people come together in fellowship, and which

results in doing good in the world. During my years

in Rotary, I have witnessed over and over again how

activities.Theseactivities,toagreatextent,resultfrom

The month of April is a perfect example of what

world. This month we celebrate National Volunteer

Week, the International Day of Mine Awareness,

World Health Day, and Earth Day, and each of these

recognitionstiesinwithoneofoursixareasoffocus.

This tells me that every Rotary club member has a part

to play as an effective volunteer in these important

observances.

Furthermore, we owe it to our community and the

world to tell our story, to make the world aware of our

SohowdoesallthisrelatetoourRotaryFoundation?

Well, very few initiatives don’t require funding. Your

Foundation is often able to help, whether it’s with

a district grant or a much larger global grant. Your

contributions to the Foundation provide a potential

source of funding that can help a club’s members do

good in the world.
