The three activity day last 18 November 2012 was a truly fulfilling one! First was, of course, the Medical Mission, dubbed as MODELS for RCC Luding and RCC Taloy Sur. Many patients walked from the mountaintop to avail of the services of the Club. Team Leader PP Diony Claridad, along with PP Chris Peralta and Rtn. Joey Bugayong made sure the medical and surgical patients were attended to. Treas. Marilyn Barredo, Sec. Baby Kaur and Rtn. Pam Perkins handled pharmacy effectively. The SLU Rotaractors led by their President, Jojo Laygo, came early and worked all morning despite their evening school activity the night before. Thank you for your compassion dear Rotarians and partners!

As expected, Rtn. Jen brought her dentists friends, members of the Baguio Dental Society, to render service to the most number of patients. Dir./PP Bert took charge of cleaning the equipment used by never-stopping flow of patients. Quite a feat guys, thanks for coming… again!

Rotakid, Ponky Cawed, came with her Psychology classmates and they took time to interact with the children in the community. They had art sessions which included face painting, Christmas décor making, learned steps in Gangnam sytle and outdoor games. It was a delight looking at the children experience being the center of attraction in this activity.

PP Gerard Audineau and EIC Marcel Badua, armed with their cameras, combed the area making sure that all activities were justly recorded.

Before lunch, RCC Luding and the Club signed for the renewal of the financial assistance through Micro Financing. This will give them another opportunity to avail of the loan amount which they have fully paid as per the terms and conditions of the Memorandum of Agreement. The families were too happy for a fruitful harvest this upcoming season.

Finally, the much needed Wash Area for the pupils of Taloy Elementary was turned over to the School. This was a joint project of the Club with RCC Taloy. I did really appreciate the structure as it was done beautifully by the RCC. It was functional and very pleasing to the eye. The municipality and school officials have visited and they were impressed with the said project! With this project children will be less prone to illnesses through proper washing of their hands.

24 November 2012 – This is TRF (The Rotary Foundation) Seminar. We have seventeen (17) attendees and this is because many want to learn about the new Future Vision Plan. True, there are many views of this matter and the way to clarify is to learn about it at length. By the time we get back, we will have a positive and clearer view on the Future Vision Plan which will take effect during the term of our very own DGE Linda Winter. Likewise, our very own PP Gerard Audineau will be a speaker in this seminar.

Milt Camp

GHs Profile

Milt Camp came to the Sonora California area after 30 years of international experience working in the Bay Area, initially as an electronics engineer at Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto and finally as a global product support engineer at Applied Materials in Sunnyvale. He is also a certified flight instructor and a member of the International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians.

For ten years Milt chaired International Services for Sonora Sunrise Rotary. In 1974, he started a group called The Flying Doctors (Los Medicos Voladores) , an organization which up to the present, fly to remote areas of Mexico in small aircraft to help deliver medical care.

Due to much needed medical care in the remote areas of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Haiti and Peru. Milt expanded and organized teams of health care volunteers to these areas of Central and South America with help from United, TACA, American Airlines and Airline Ambassadors. There, they work in small hospitals, clinics and schools providing dental repair and education, eye exams and provide needed glasses, medical consulting, cataract surgery, and other major and minor surgery in ten day spans. As a non-medical person, he maintains all the surgery room equipment and trains locals in how to maintain the equipment. Approximately 50 percent of the volunteers on all trips are non-medical personal but are very enthusiastic and hard workers.

Since 2003-2004, with a generous help from The Wheelchair Foundation, Rotary, Lions, 20/30 club, and Coca-Cola of El Salvador , these groups teamed up and have helped obtain funding and distributed 2000 wheelchairs. They are now trying to complete another container of wheelchairs for Peru. With help from Mel Hanson of Modesto, California Rotary “Seeds Of Hope” program, he has given out approximately 300 pounds of seeds in clinics and to families in Central, South America, and this year, in Baguio City, Philippines, helping people to start their own gardens at home.

In February 2006 and again in 2012 there was a team of 20 members from local Rotary clubs that few to Peru to review a Rotary funded water project that Milt helped set up in 2002. There are medical teams scheduled through out 2013 to return to some of the same areas for work.

The Regular MeetingThat Was17 November 2012Rtn. Jun Bahul Images: Rtn. Cecille Apostol

The Presidential table is again jam packed with beautiful and dashing ladies.

As if everyone is blessed after this 4 very talented and beautiful ladies rendered Christian Melodies for the club. This entertainment

is care of Aud. Bennie Laranang.

No prize comparable to this! Rtn. Jody presented himself as the raffle won by GHS who can’t decide whice prize to take. Ironically,

all they got is this photo op!

At almost 75 words per minute, Rtn. Jody took over the Raffle Draw. Prizes consisted of attractive Christmas decors, most of

which were made by Rtn. Angie himself.

Staying true to its cherished tradition, the Club started promptly its regular meeting last Saturday with a 12:30 pm Call to Order by Pres. Libby Fernandez. Many of the RCB members were in blue (Club uniform), but the day definitely was not blue with a lively Program Coordinator, VP Chris Faelnar, and a Powerhouse roomful of jolly Rotarians and guests!

Invocation was led by Rtn. Mariver Agayas, followed by the time-honoured singing of the Philippine National Anthem, and the Rotary Hymn with hands joined in a big circle. Entertainment came next, courtesy of Aud. Bennie Laranang; she invited four (4) young ladies who sang beautiful Christian melodies.

At 12:45 pm, Rtn. Joey Bugayong introduced the dignitaries at the head table, and the visiting Rotarians and guests, namely: Rtn. Larry Apostol, spouse of Rtn. Cess Apostol; Guest of Honor and Speaker (GHS) Maria Grace Nachor Carreon; Rtn. Milt Camp; Martha Palasico; Rudy Acop, guest of PP Bert Talco; and the lady singers – Brettany Garcia, Rhema Bautista, Eden Claire Carbonel, and Charmaigne Garcia.

At 12:55 pm, Rtn. Jun Cardona took care of Finest Moments; he fined the Club Members on the basis of their participation or attendance in necrological services for the late PP Johnny Zarate last 13 November.

It was raffle draw time at 1:10pm led by Rtn. Angie Visperas and Sec. Baby Kaur, with jolly Rtn. Jody Alabanza announcing the winners – taking his sweet time. Prizes consisted of attractive Christmas decors, most of which were made by Rtn. Angie himself; he mentioned that he is making decors for sale (putting talents to good use is never too late indeed!). The winners in the raffle draw were PP Diony, our GHS, PE Uwe, Rtn. Naas, VP Chris, PP Gerard, Rudy Acop, Rtn. Jody, PP Doming, PP Chris, PP Benny, me, and Rtn. Peter. As always, Rtn. Jody was a welcome scene stealer; when our GHS was choosing which prize to get after her number was drawn, Rtn. Jody said “choose me!” “Take home?” and “He is single!” were heard in the room to which our GHS gamely said: “I am also single!” Presto… photo op followed for our GHS and Rtn. Jody and there goes another smiley day for jolly Rtn. Jody! But it did not end there, a punch line from VP Chris caused a big laugh in the room; he said to Rtn. Jody: “I am just wondering why you have band aid on your finger!”

At 1:30pm , PE Uwe presented some Rotary Information, particularly the history and the 4-Way Test, Paul Harris

GHS Maria Grace Nachor Carreon, who is an Advertising Executive and TV host at Sky Community Channel 12, shared to the club the

unique world of local TV and her plans in promoting it.

After an informative talk and gracing the club’s queries, GHS Maria Grace Nachor Carreon recieved a plaque of appreciation for

rendering her talent and her time to the club.

being the “first but not the first” – first President of RI but not of a Rotary club, and the use of first names and nick names in Rotary.

Member’s Time followed at 1:38pm during which Rtn. Pam announced that the Club will have Kris Kringle and on 01 Dec, those participating will exchange gag/joke gifts (no minimum amount set) and a prize will on given for the funniest gift; the main gift (minimum cost of P300.00) will be exchanged during the Club Christmas Party on Dec. 15 (venue will be at Ang Ating Tahanan, according to PE Uwe). Dir. David and PP Gerard reminded everyone on the 24 November TRF Seminar and encouraged participation in the said event where PP Gerard is one of the speakers. PP Benny announced that the RCB Chorale, led by a new master – Alex Manongdo, who attended the day’s meeting, is aiming to produce 1-2 Paul Harris Fellows from its fund-raising; he invited everyone to join the chorale and attend the practices. PP Raffy requested narrative report updates from the Diamond Jubilee Chairpersons; PP Chris reminded everyone of the December 8 election and requested those who will be absent on said date to text or email the election committee to get ballots in advance if they wish to avail of absentee voting. Treas. Marilyn also gave a reminder on payment of dues.

At 1:52pm , President’s Time was called. Pres. Libby reminded the Club of the 18 November MODELS mission in Taloy Sur during which the wash area project of the Club will be turned-over as part of the activities. PP Bert Talco, whose birthday was 15 November, was greeted by everyone while the Happy Birthday song was sung led by PP Lito; Pres. Libby handed to PP Bert a framed birthday card from the Club. (Thanks for the ice cream treat, PP Bert.)

At 1:57pm , Rtn. Cess gave a colourful introduction of our GHS, her friend and “sister”, Maria Grace Nachor Carreon, who is an Advertising Executive, TV host, and Program Director of Sky Community Channel 12, and a Personal Trainer and Image Coach. Ms. Carreon, host of the TV program EntrepView at her home network, gave a 20-minute talk on tapping the local TV as partner for servant leadership, values education and transformation. She talked on the potential of local TV networks and stated that they should utilized as medium to make Baguio City a better place to live in. She mentioned that their network have programs of various social interests such as those on women, family solidarity, and business. She invited the club to be part of her network’s activities through TV guesting, participation in and sponsoring or endorsing of their programs, and contributing ideas for quality programming.

After her talk, Ms. Carreon agreed to an open forum; Rtn. Jody raised a concern on the public acceptability of local TV shows, which Ms. Carreon aptly addressed. There was also discussion on airing of programs in both Sky 12 and Mountain View Cable, wholesome and promotional TV viewing, commercialization of values, language issues, and business advertising; these were raised by PP Doming, Rtn. Joe Ramos, Treas. Marilyn, and Rtn. Phillip.

After the open forum, Treas. Marilyn gave a brief response, then Pres. Libby handed to our GHS a token of appreciation for her time and talk. Thereafter, Pilipinas Kong Mahal was sung and the meeting was adjourned at 2:50pm

The members of the RCC Luding are hardworking, industrious and determined farmers. They live on top of the mountains of Tuba, Benguet. They farm their products amidst the hillsides carefully tending to highland vegetables as their means of livelihood. Bringing fertilizer and seeds to the mountaintop is as equally challenging as bringing their produce to the main thoroughfare!

Prior to the financial assistance by the Club, the Luding farmers were dependent on loans from the suppliers, who were, however, charging very high interest rates. More often, the farmers were under the mercy of the said suppliers who dictate product prices to their damage and prejudice.

The project micro financial assistance of the Club to RCC Luding was the light that gave hope to the unfortunate farmers. Of late, RCC Luding livelihood has been adversely affected due to strong typhoons, monsoon rains and unpredictable weather. Vegetable production was down. In this light, The Rotary Club of Baguio, in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology-CAR (DOST-CAR) extended support to the community through micro financing. A substantial amount was given to RCC Luding which was used primarily for the purchase of fertilizer for the whole community.

The agreement was that the said amount was to be utilized for production and to be returned after one (1) year with a percentage earned which shall be deposited for the benefit of the RCC itself. The contract was for November 2011 to November 2012.

In November 18, 2012, RCC Luding was able to complete the amount as financed, was able to deposit the percentage earned in the RCC account and ready to return the said amount to the Rotary Club and to DOST.

RCB RENEWS MICRO FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO RCC LUDINGDir/PP Bert Talco

However, RCC Luding made an appeal for them to be allowed another extension of the benefits of the micro financing scheme fora more stable and substantial production for the incoming year. The Club and DOST found that RCC Luding satisfactorily complied with the conditions of the assistance. Therefore, the appeal was granted. The financial assistance was extended for another year, from November 2012 to November 2013. The families of the RCC were all delighted as they see a strong support behind them.

At present, RCC Luding could transport their produce without difficulty through the tramlines which were constructed for them by the Rotary Club of Baguio in partnership with DOST. Along the same line, the community’s water supply now reach their homes. Once again, this is through the continuing and untiring support of the Rotary Club of Baguio - making a difference in the community’s lives!

November 2012

Taking the long viewWilfrid J. Wilkinson Foundation Trustee Chair

As the clock ticks down to 1 July, we are in the final stages of preparing for the full rollout of the Future Vision Plan. Our goal is simple: enabling our Foundation to continue Doing Good in the World, and ensuring that we make the best use of every dollar, euro, yen, and peso that we have.

In everything we do in Rotary, we strive for the greatest impact. This means focusing on sustainability – on projects whose effects will go on for years, and on work that will continue to change lives even after Rotarians’ involvement has ended. When polio is eradicated, every child who will ever be born will benefit, long after the last drop of vaccine has been put into a child’s mouth. PolioPlus is, of course, a unique Rotary program – but it is time to bring that kind of long-term perspective to all our service.

Part of our goal in Future Vision is making sure that we focus on the long view in everything we do. Accordingly, part of that mindset is making sure that we make it a priority to support The Rotary Foundation and its Annual Fund. Our goal is Every Rotarian, Every Year: for every Rotarian to give a gift each year to the Annual Fund, with an average donation of US$100. Meeting that goal would mean $120 million per year for Rotary service. It would also mean an organization in which every single member is supporting, and is invested in, the Foundation’s success – making The Rotary Foundation truly Our Foundation.

There are many ways to describe our Rotary Foundation. But I think of our Foundation literally – as the foundation for all of Rotary.

We do not often think about the ground beneath our feet. We do not often think about the walls that are holding up our house. We take them for granted. We think about them only when they are not there.

Not long ago in Japan, the ground fell out from under our feet. On Friday, 11 March 2011, a magnitude 9 earthquake shook Japan to its very core. More than 15,000 people died, nearly 6,000 were injured, and another 4,000 are still missing. The total losses of the disaster are estimated at over US$300 billion.

In a matter of hours, half a million people in one of the world’s wealthiest and most developed countries lost everything. They went from living in comfort and security to facing an uncertain future in school gymnasiums, tents, and ruined buildings.

In Japan, we are used to earthquakes. We thought we were ready for anything. But no one ever expected anything like this.

What happened on that day changed Japan, and everyone who lives there. It has made us realize how fragile our lives are. And it has made me realize how little separates me from the people I help through Rotary.

It is easy to look at the people we help through our Foundation as somehow different from ourselves. They live far away. We do not know their language or their culture. We do not know what it is like to have no running water, no sanitation, no health care, no education. We look at pictures, and we read stories in the news about poverty, wars, and disasters. We see, from so far away, the people who are living through such terrible times. But it is hard to put ourselves in their place.

Today, I tell you that there is nothing at all separating us from the people we help. We are all the same. Only the circumstances surrounding us are different.

Through our Foundation, we have the power to live the words of our Foundation’s motto: Doing Good in the World. Through it, we can do so much more good than we could ever do alone. And it matters so much – to people just like us.

A wash area for children to wash their hands and brush their teeth is a necessity in elementary schools. As has been told, to do away with viral infections, wash ones hands! Unfortunately, RCC Taloy Elementary school located in Tuba, Benguet did not have that required wash area.

Thus, the wash area became the RCC Taloy’s priority project. They have strongly asked for this from the Rotary Club of Baguio. Believing the merit of the much needed request, the Club partnered with the school based RCC and went on to construct the Children’s Wash Area.

With the dedicated effort of the members of RCC Taloy, who undertook to design and construct the same, and the financial aid of the Club, a beautiful and functional wash area was turned over to Taloy Elementary School on November 18, 2012. RCC Taloy made the structure one can truly be proud of! It serves the needs of elementary pupils where they can comfortably clean themselves to rid of infections and illnesses.

The Rotary Foundation Future Vision Pilot is a three-year test of the new grant structure offered in the Foundation’s Future Vision Plan. One hundred districts are participating in the pilot. Pilot districts will have a unique opportunity to help refine the new grant structure by providing input and receiving specialized Foundation support and service.

Grant structurePilot districts will work with Rotary Foundation District

Grants and Rotary Foundation Global Grants for three years of the pilot. Download the terms and conditions for these grants.

Rotary Foundation District Grants District grants are block grants made to districts for

up to 50 percent of their District Designated Fund (DDF). District grants offer the flexibility to respond quickly to immediate needs or to plan projects with clubs locally or in other countries.

Rotary Foundation Global Grants Global grants support large international projects with

sustainable, high-impact outcomes in the six areas of focus that correspond to the Foundation’s mission.

Rotary’s areas of focusThe needs spanning Rotary’s six areas of focus are vast,

ranging from lack of access to clean water to the need for immunization that prevent deadly diseases. Learn more in the Rotary’s Areas of Focus publication

Rotary clubs serve communities around the world, each with unique concerns and needs. Rotarians have continually adapted and improved the way they respond to those needs, taking on a broad range of service projects. The most successful and sustainable Rotary service tends to fall within one of the following six areas:

THis MonTH

1 Peace and conflict prevention/resolution2 Disease prevention and treatment3 Water and sanitation4 Maternal and child health5 Basic education and literacy6 Economic and community developmentRotary International and The Rotary Foundation

recognize these six areas of focus as organizational priorities, and there are countless ways that Rotarians can address these needs locally and internationally. For ideas, consult the publication Rotary’s Areas of Focus.

Clubs and districts participating in the Future Vision pilot can apply for Rotary Foundation Global Grant funding by targeting specific goals for one or more of the areas of focus. Learn more about these goals.
