AOnceinaLifetimeEvent
In2017membersandguestsoftheLloyd’sMotorClub(LMC)attendedabattlefieldstourinFrance.AwalkintheforestonthefinaldayofourtripsparkedaconversationwithtwoofmyLMCcolleaguesGrahamFaggetterandGilesSchofieldaboutthesignificanceof2018,100yearsaftertheendofWW1andthepossibilityofconductinganLMCcommemorativeeventin2018.
Therewasacompellingneedtoundertakeaneventin2018andonreturningtoLondonattentionturnedtoexploringthepossibilities.
ThediscoveryofunpublishedbookcompiledbyJohnHamblin,oneofourLloyd’smarketcolleagues,broughtthewholeideaofaneventtogether.John’sbookchroniclestheFallenfromLloyd’sofLondoninWW1,thebook’sdetailincludestherestingplacesoftheLloyd’sFallenanditformedtheperfectbasisforourevent.
Asaresult,InJune2018,fifteencarsandthirtysixLMCmembersandtheirgueststravelledtoFranceandBelgiumtolaycommemorativecrossesontherestingplacesoftheFallenfromLloyd’sofLondoninWW1.Inaddition,crosseswillbelaidattherestingplacesoftheLloyd’sFallenthroughouttheUnitedKingdominGermany,Greece,Italy, Iraq,Egypt,Israel,PalestineandGaza.
John’soriginalunpublishedbookisincorporatedinthispublicationasaresultofthegenerosityoftheLloyd’sThreeRoomsCharitableTrust.Thisbookhasbeenlimitedto100copiesandgiftedtotheparticipantsonthe2018tripwiththeremainderofferedforsaleinaidofourchosencharitytheNotForgottenAssociationwww.nfassociation.org
TomycolleaguesGrahamFaggetterandGilesSchofieldmysincerethanksforyoursupportinmakingtheeventsuchasuccessandyourdedicationintheplanningand delivery.
LMCandThreeRoomsClubmembersandtheirguestsareprivilegedandproudtohaveparticipatedinthisonceinalifetimeeventcommemoratingtheFallenatLloyd’s,onehundredyearsfromtheendofTheGreatWar.

Theteamof36Lloyd’sMotorClubmembersandtheirguestshadbeensplitinto5groupsinordertocovertherestingplacesoftheLloyd’sfalleninFranceandBelgium.TeamsAlpha,Bravo,Charlie,DeltaandEchocommencedtheplacementofcrossesonFriday1stJunesupportedbyGrahamFaggetterandGilesSchofieldwhomannedtheLogisticsCorp.onthetrip.

FollowadayoftheteamsvisitingtheirprearrangedrestingplacesoftheFallen,thewholeteammetforthefirsttimeat17:00hrsattheThiepvalMemorial.
Followingatourofthesplendidvisitorscentre,MartinRobinsonledthecommemorationtothetwenty-oneLloyd’sFallenwhoarerememberedatthememorial.ThenameofeachoftheLloyd’sFallenwasreadouttotheassembledLloyd’svisitors.WewerejoinedbyrepresentativesfromCharterhouseSchoolwhowerepayingtheirrespectstotheCharterhouseFallen.

FollowingtheThiepvalEventtheLloyd’sgroupretiredtotheRoyalPicardieHotelinAlbertwherewewerejoinedfordinnerbymembersoftheCharterhouseSchool.FollowingthemealBobVolantegaveamusichallperformanceofWW1songsonhisBanjoleleandwasaccompaniedbyMichaelCobbonguitarandMaxTaylorontheUkulele.

BreakfastandanearlygetawayfortheRoyalPicardieHotelsawtheteamheadofftoresumetheirdutieslayingcrossesattherestingplacesofthefallen.
OureveningwasspentattheHotelMaisonRougeinNoeux-le-MineswheretheLloyd’sGroupmetforamealandentertainmentbyBobVolanteandhisteam.
