THE MATCHUPWildcats Storylines ...WHO ARE THESE GUYS: The Wildcats and Bees have never before met on the gridiron. The two schools have become rivals on the soccer pitch, how-ever, meeting in the State Semifinal in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.

LUCKY #30 and #360: The Wildcats are making playoff appearance #30 in the program’s prolific history. Chuck Kyle ’69 has coached the Wildcats in all 30 postseason apperances. Kyle has a 74-18 all-time record in the play-offs, winning 11 state championships and 4 national championships during his previous 37 seasons. Kyle earned his 361st coaching win last Friday, placing him 4th in OHSAA history.

NEXT MAN UP: Every team deals with injury at postseason time, and the Wildcats are no different. Injuries have popped up this year at several posi-tions, opening the door for young players. Sophomore Will Robinson is a new addition to the depth chart this week at tackle, while Emmett Hanna returns at safety and Aidan Conway returns at linebacker. If Robinson plays tackle, he’ll wear #65. If Sean Ward plays offensive line, he’ll wear #68.

PFAFF SHOW: After emerging as the starter following a competition at the position, Joe Pfaff has performed aptly in the playoffs. Pfaff notched 184 yards vs. Solon and 131 yards vs. Euclid. Effective as a game manager who can stretch the field, Pfaff will be vital to keeping the offense balanced.

MARTY MAGIC: The Wildcats have found an identity on offense: Marty Lenehan. The offense is defined by Lenehan’s toughness and grit, on full display with his 39 carries for 174 yards and 2 touchdowns. On the season, Lenehan has 620 yards and 7 touchdowns, averaging 103.3 yards per game. He’s the bellcow and will be critical in the playoff stretch.

THE BIG UGLIES: The injury bug has bit every position, even offensive line. The Wildcats will have some changes to make with Ashton Montgomery out this week. AJ Gottschalk or Tommy Wasinski will slot in at left guard and William Witalis will slide over to right tackle. Will Robinson and Sean Ward will be backups at tackle in case more injuries occur.

DUNSTAN DANDY: Jack Dunstan returned to the lineup and immediately made an impact at wideout vs. Euclid. The senior hauled in 3 catches for 28 yards, placing him in the team lead for catches (18). Dunstan has 205 re-ceiving yards on the season. Steven Bodamer, Nick Lamirand, John Becker, and Colin Wiehn will also figure into the mix.

A NIGHTMARE NAMED ADLER: Bennett Adler surely gave his opponents nightmares last week after his incredible performance vs. Euclid. Adler notched 5 tackles, 4 sacks, 5 tackles for loss, and 1 forced fumble in one of the best efforts by a Saint Ignatius defender in recent memory.

ADJUSTMENTS IN THE SECONDARY: The secondary may look a bit differ-ent this week. Emmett Hanna hopes to return as the starter at free safety, shifting Griffin Taliak back to strong safety. The Wildcats may play more of a dime look against 5-wide receiver sets, with Andrew Chime in as the Hawk or Brandon Webster as another cornerback.

CAPTAINS: The captains for the 2020 season are #37 Nick Velotta, #48 Aidan Conway, #66 Gus Salopek, and #86 Nick Lamirand.

ABOUT THE WILDCATS ...

As you look at the 2020 Wild-cats, some similarities emerge to the 1999 Saint Ignatius football team. Entering the 1999 cam-paign, the Wildcats had plenty of starting roles to fill after a 10-3 season in 1998. In fact, the Wild-cats had to fill 18 of 22 starting spots, including quarterback. Not unlike this season, Saint Ignatius had a QB competition for much of the season and plenty of injuries, sidelining stars such as Jon Gannon ’01. The inexperience and injuries led to losses such as 50-33 defeat to St. Xavier, remi-niscient of struggles by the Cats this season. In the Regional Final, the 1999 Cats confronted the undefeated Solon Comets at Byers Field. Solon started the scoring with an early touchdown, but Dan Murphy ’00 marched the Cats into the end zone to tie it. After a So-lon three-and-out, Mike Foran ’01 (now the Chief Operating Officer, Co-Founder at Market Garden Brewery) returned the ensuing punt 48 yards for the 14-7 lead. A safety and a quick scoring drive boosted Solon back into the lead, 15-14, heading into the sec-ond half of action. To start the half, the Wildcats marched down the field on a 9-play drive, capped off by a 21-yard Murphy scamper and punc-tuated by a Bryan Panteck ’01 2-point conversion. The defense forced a quick Solon punt, and the Wildcats capitalized on the field position. Murphy raced into the end zone for a crucial TD, extending the lead to 29-15 midway through the third quarter. Solon managed another safety and scored a late TD with 1:28 left. But the Wildcats held on, and just two weeks later, captured the program’s 8th state title.

Learning about the Battling Bees ...THRIVING IN THE SPOTLIGHT: In the Regional Quarterfinal, Me-dina toppled the No. 1 seed St. Edward, 35-31, forcing a fumble deep in the red zone to secure the victory late.

AIR RAID: The Bees’ offense is best described as an Air Raid offense. Medina most often employs 4 and 5 wide receiver sets, spreading defenses with a speedy, quickstrike offense.

ALLAR ATTACK: Drew Allar is the ringleader of the offense. At 6’5, 220 pounds, Allar is a deadly threat at quarterback, a thrill-ing passer and an agile runner. Allar has an astounding 2,093 yards and 21 touchdowns through 8 games. Allar is drawing interest from Division I colleges, and for good reason. The junior is the real deal and can sling the ball all over the yard. BOYLAND’S BREAKOUT: Medina surprised St. Edward with the run game last Friday. Dorian Boyland entered the Regional Quar-terfinal with 141 yards, while Allar was the team leading rusher with 170 yards. Boyland nearly bested both marks with 158 yards on 17 carries. Boyland is the grandson of Dorian “Doe” Boyland, a former Pittsburgh Pirates first basemen. The younger Boyland scored on runs of 4 and 10 yards, playing a key role in Medina’s upset victory. Boyland saw much of his success when Medina loaded up in the Maryland stack I-formation, as he’s a bruising back. Medina’s coach Larry Laird told the Medina Gazette this week that Boyland “could carry the ball anywhere from 5 to 30 times.” Boyland also plays defense. With a 4.6 40-time and a 3.2 GPA, Boyland is headed to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

OFFENSIVE WEAPONS: Luke Hensley is Medina’s top wideout. The 6’2, 200-pound senior hauled in 6 catches for 63 yards vs. 63 yards and 3 TDs vs. St. Edward. He leads the team with 51 recep-tions for 786 yards and 13 touchdowns. Drew Hensley also figures into the mix, as does Jajuan Jackson and Matt Rudolph.

FOUR MAN FRONT: Not unlike Euclid, Medina will roll out a 4-man front. The Bees bent but didn’t break much vs. St. Edward, allowing a whopping 446 rushing yards but holding the Eagles to three rushing scores.

AGGRESSIVE D: The Bees will stunt and blitz on defense, look-ing to confuse opponents. Coverage-wise, Medina will sometimes lock on the cornerbacks and play the safeties in zone. Medina held the Eagles to 4-of-11 passing for 74 yards.

DEFENDERS TO WATCH: Linebacker Matt Hamula entered the St. Edward game as the team’s leading tackler with 27 solo tack-les. Look out also for Matt and Nathan Spatny, along with defen-sive back Wade Schmidt. SPECIAL TEAMS: Ryan Miller handles the kicking duties for Medina, and he has a good leg. Luke Hensley does the punting. Jajuan Jackson is the main return man. The Wildcats will prep plenty for Medina’s special teams this week.

DE BENNETT ADLER ’21Bennett Adler is always a pest for opposing offens-es, but no team struggled against him more than Euclid. Adler notched 5 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, and 1 forced fumble in an incredible effort against the Pan-thers. Medina poses a new challenge this week with a top-flight quarter-back and a bowling ball running back. Adler will be essential to the Wild-cats’ efforts on defense to slow down Medina’s high-scoring offense.

The Wildcats’ offense has found its identity in the form of West Park native Marty Lenehan. The Our Lady of Angels product took hits and kept get-ting up in a 39-carry, 174-yard effort vs. Euclid. Lenehan found paydirt twice, too. The hard-charging back has an eye for finding running lanes, with three straight games of over 100 rushing yards. The Cats will need him vs. Medina.

7600 Day Drive (corner of Ridge Road and Day Drive) Parma, Ohio Seating Capacity: 11,850Playing Surface: Field Turf Built: 1928 (Major Renovations in1940, 1957, 1963, 1993, 2013)

2020 marks the 93rd season that football has been played on this location; now known as Byers Field atRobert M. Boulton Stadium. In 1921, the cities of Parma and Parma Heights opened the first high school for their residents on a site just outside the east bleachers. Seven years later, the apple orchard and grass field located behind the new school was converted into the athletic field with the gridiron laid out in a north-south alignment, just as it is today. Recently, renovations have been completed on the facility. In the last decade, a new lighting system was in-stalled; bleacher improvements (including the installa-tion of handrails) were completed along with renova-tions to the lockerrooms, restrooms and concession areas. Other improvements include the installation of a video board at the north end of the stadium - it is one of the largest video boards in use at a high school facil-ity the state. The pressbox, which has been upgraded in the past five seasons with a new working media area and new windows, seats 30 journalists and broadcasters. New field turf was installed for the 2012 season. In the last two seasons, the stadium has also had handi-cap seating added to both sets of grandstands, includ-ing 46 wheelchair and companion seats on the home side of the stadium. The Parma City Schools invested nearly $1.2 million into the facilty during the summer of 2014, including a new parking lot on the south end of the Stadium and the full replacement of the parking lot on the east side of the stadium, under the Press Box.

mark, struggling with inconsistency and injuries. Medina drew a tough game with St. Edward in the Regional Quarterfinal, a rematch from 2019, when the Eagles drubbed the Bees, 73-38. This year’s game was a lot different, ending in a 35-31 Bees victory. Not many folks predicted a Saint Ignatius vs.

Medina Regional Semifinal, but here we are. “I’m not sure if many people thought a month ago

we’d be in the sweet 16,” said Head Coach Chuck Kyle ’69. “All the credit goes to these young men. They kept the faith.”The Wildcats and Bees have never played on the

gridiron before, so Friday’s Regional Semifinal has the potential be a classic first meeting that both pro-grams won’t soon forget. SAINT IGNATIUS OFFENSE VS. MEDINA DEFENSEThe Wildcats offense has found an identity during

the playoffs, and it starts with two juniors – Marty Lenehan and Joe Pfaff.Lenehan has emerged as a bellcow back, espe-

cially in the past few weeks. Lenehan has reached the century mark in three straight games, totaling 620 on the season, including 174 yards on 39 carries vs. Euclid. The game plan was not to ride Lenehan that much, but the junior showcased such incredible moves that the coaching staff rode the hot hand and let Lenehan run the ball over the Panthers.Pfaff managed 131 passing yards against a Euclid

secondary that boasts two Division I commits. Pfaff will look to help the Cats be more balanced than last week. The Rocky River native has shown poise in the pocket and a live, accurate arm. He tossed a beauti-ful ball to John Becker for 22 yards vs. Euclid.Jack Dunstan is the team’s leading wideout with 18

catches for 205 yards, but Nick Lamirand, Steven Bo-damer, Colin Wiehn, and Becker will also figure into the mix. The Wildcats would love to see some speed on the outside to complete the deep ball when Me-dina crowds the box to stop Lenehan.Injuries will shake up the offensive line a bit this

week. William Witalis will slide over to right tackle, with Tommy Wasinski and AJ Gottschalk fighting for the starting left guard spot. Will Robinson and Sean Ward will be on the depth chart at right tackle.Medina’s defense bent plenty but stood strong

enough to hold off St. Edward last week. The Eagles managed 446 rushing yards but only three rushing scores. Medina did limit the Eagles to 4-of-11 passing for 74 yards. A late fumble forced by the Bees made all the difference in the world. Avoiding turnovers will

be absolutely critical for the Wildcats. As a unit, the Bees largely play with a 4-man front,

stunting and twisting the defensive linemen. Medina will switch coverages, but often locks the corner-backs in man coverage.Linebacker Matt Hamula enters as Medina’s lead-

ing tackler with 65 total tackles (35 solo, 30 assists). Hamula and fellow backer Nathan Spatny are tied for the team lead with 7 tackles for loss. Spatny leads the team with 3 sacks. Matt Spatny has tallied 3 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries. Defensive back Hunter Stratton leads the team with 5 pass breakups, also picking off a pass. SAINT IGNATIUS DEFENSE VS. MEDINA OFFENSEThe story of Medina’s win vs. St. Edward was the

run game. Typically an Air Raid attack, Medina utilized the Maryland stacked-I and Dorian Boyland as the cudgel. Boyland had only managed 141 yards before Friday, but battered St. Edward for 158 yards on 17 carries. At 6’2, 225 pounds, Boyland is a batter-ing ram who can also speed past you. Boyland’s presence in the run game makes Drew

Allar’s passing attack that much more deadly. The 6’5, 220-pound quarterback has the size and talent to play on Saturdays. Allar has tallied an astonishing 2,093 yards and 21 TDs through the air and 189 yards and 2 scores on the ground. He’s the real deal. Luke Hensley is his top weapon with 51 catches

for 786 yards and 13 TDs on the year. The 6’2, 200-pound wideout is a weapon. And you can’t forget about Jajuan Jackson, who has 22 catches for 337 yards and 2 TDs, or Drew Hensley, who has 23 catches for 297 yards and 3 TDs.The Wildcats are fortunate to have two defenders

back on the field this week – Emmett Hanna and Aid-an Conway. Hanna returns from a 2-game absence to start at free safety and Conway is back at middle linebacker. Nick Velotta may also play at outside line-backer after suffering an injury earlier in the year. The secondary will be critical to stopping Medina.

Griffin Taliak has been outstanding at safety, with 26.5 tackles. Chris Snyder and Cole Smith have been dynamite at cornerback, with a combined 6 intercep-tions and 9 pass breakups. They’ll be heavily tested.Bennett Adler will look to repeat his crazy effort

vs. Euclid after tallying 5 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. The front six will need to generate pressure to limit Allar. SPECIAL TEAMSDeclan Mangan continued to thrive vs. Euclid with

3 important field goals. Medina poses a good chal-lenge in the kicking game. Ryan Miller can hit field goals, while Luke Hensley averages 36.4 yards on his rugby-style punts. Jackson returns kicks well, also.

Lenehan powers Wildcats to Regional Quarterfinal win

By Jack Slemenda ’21

EUCLID – The Saint Ignatius Wildcats defeated the Euclid Panthers in the Regional Quarterfinal, 30-20, at Euclid Community Stadium.

After an exchange of possessions and a Wildcat punt, Euclid drove 55 yards in 8 plays, taking a 7-0 lead with 5:09 to go in the first quarter. Marty Lene-han scored a 6-yard touchdown, tying the game at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter after an 8 play 56 yard drive...

Panthers punted back to the Cats. Mangan kicked a 52-yard field goal to make it 10-7 Wildcats with 9:42 to go in the first half. A Panther punt gave the Cats the ball on their own 45-yard line. After a pass from Pfaff to Nick Lamirand, Lenehan moved down to the Panther 11-yard line on a 15-yard run. The next play, Lenehan scored an 11-yard touchdown. Saint Ignatius led 17-7 with 5:04 to go in the 2nd quarter. After an exchange of possessions, a 75-yard Euclid touchdown pass narrowed the score to 17-14 Wild-cats at the end of the first half.

On the second play of the second half, a 20-yard Chris Snyder interception made it 24-14 Wildcats. Back-to-back sacks forced the Panthers to punt on 4th and 21. An offensive drive for the Wildcats ended with no points. After an exchange of posses-sions, Pfaff found Dunstan on a third down play to keep the drive alive. Lenehan led the offense to the Euclid 11-yard line. Mangan hit a 41-field goal setting the Cats ahead 27-14 with 6:33 to go in the fourth quarter.

After the field goal, the Ignatius defense got an-other takeaway from a Cole Smith pick taken to the Euclid 33-yard line. Dunstan hauled in a completion to the 14-yard line. On 4th and 5, Mangan extended the Ignatius lead to 30-14 with 4:09 to go in the game. On the ensuing Panther drive, Bennett Adler came up with another sack on a 3rd and 5. But on a desperation call for points, the Panthers fired it deep on 4th and 12. The Hail Mary was complete in the endzone for a big score, 30-20 Cats after a failed Euclid 2-point conversion. An onside kick was then recovered by the Panthers, but an Adler strip-sack and fumble recovery by Aidan Hubbard gave the ball back to the Cats with 1:32 to go in the playoff game.

Lenehan accounted for 233 of the Wildcats’ 298 total yards. The Wildcats rushed for 167 yards and passed for 131. Euclid passed for 188 yards but man-aged just 23 yards on the ground against the Saint Ignatius defense.
