As we enter a new decade—and our 31st year of ChoiCe AffAirs—we want to thank the hundreds of volunteers and people like you who have planned and attended ChoiCe AffAirs events throughout the years in support of Planned Parenthood California Central Coast.Your generosity helped our five health centers provide safe, affordable health care to 31,000 patients last year. Whether these patients were seeking cancer screenings, birth control or other assistance, your participation in ChoiCe AffAirs ensures that Planned Parenthood is here for them—no matter what! You also helped our sexual health educators provide programs to hundreds of teens and adults, information they need to keep them safe and healthy.We hope that you will enjoy the events we have planned this year. Some are returning favorites, while others are new, celebrating technology and our changing times. With a spectacular view—sparkling ocean and islands beyond—this is the perfect place to enjoy the excitement of playing bridge with like-minded people!Bring your bridge partner or come on your own—partners will rotate throughout the afternoon. Before the games begin, there will be time to wander through this magnificent home, appreciate the art, and admire the modern architecture as you get acquainted with your bridge buddies while enjoying champagne and a light snack. Bridge aficionados Minda Kraines, Pat Sweem and Laura Newman will be on hand to make you comfortable and keep you well fed! Don Newman, an excellent bridge player himself, will organize the games for at least a dozen hands of bridge.After successful crossruffs, brave discards and decisive plays, celebrate a feeling of accomplishment and calm your nerves with libations and delectable appetizers. Join Karen Gray, a remarkable cheesemonger for over 17 years, in a lovely local teaching kitchen. Karen will exhibit her amazing skills and help all cheese aficionados learn the proper method of producing a multitude of cheeses! The sumptuous cheeses you will learn to make include: ricotta, chèvre, crème fraiche, mozzarella and fromage blanc. Following the demonstration, you will have the opportunity to enjoy all the freshly made cheese in an appetizer, a salad and dessert. Each course will be paired with the appropriate exquisite wine. Grab your apron and flour up your hands as we meet in the kitchen…of an exclusive private club on the beach in Montecito!You will learn the art and craft of making a hand-thrown pizza crust. Since the wine is just as important as the pizza in this event, your learning will be enhanced by the opportunity to sip a superb glass of Pinot. However, don’t let yourself be distracted by the wine as the chef demonstrates how to skillfully roll out, throw and garnish your own pizza! Your throwing skills will come in handy while preparing the dough for all the mouthwatering ingredients offered as possible pizza toppings. Enjoy the creativity of architect Jeff Shelton in Jeff’s design studio while he discusses his special method for creating imaginative and often whimsical architectural projects in Santa Barbara. See how drawings, photographs and close interaction with owners are used to develop artistically inspired homes and office buildingsJeff’s designs reflect his unique interpretation of Spanish-influenced architecture while using his brother David Shelton’s metal art to embellish and enhance the artistic ambience. Jeff will show off some of his most interesting creations, including the astonishing Ablitt Tower. From there, we will walk to some of his other creations.Our final stop will be at El Zapato…a special tour of an imaginative three-story home. From the bottom up, this home is a treasure—adorned with thousands of glowing tiles and intricate wrought iron details. Relish the fabulous 360-degree view from the rooftop deck while your co-hosts Don and Laura Newman provide appetizers with assistance from Renee deJong. The 49 peacocks strolling under the beautiful oak trees are an added bonus!Gary Blum, owner and creative director of specialty nursery Heritage Succulents, will teach you about these luscious plants and the ins-and-outs of working with them. He will provide information about care, maintenance, propagation and transplanting. Succulents are water-wise, fire resistant and all the rage now! Learn how to easily grow these California-friendly plants. Maybe you will be inspired to transform your entire landscape. Nancy Skewes-Cox will assist you in planting your own succulent arrangement in a 10” x 5” wooden box (or bring your own container of the same approximate size). All the essentials for you to make a lovely succulent arrangement will be provided. The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) recently shared that new farmers with less than 10 years of experience now make up 25% of producers nationwide, and Ventura County has a strong representation! Join us to meet these amazing new farmers, whether they are first or fifth generation, and learn more about how they have achieved success with their operations on the ground.The tour will include meeting fourth-generation farmer Alana King at their family ranch in Fillmore. This wonderful ranch, which has been in the family for more than 100 years, produces avocados, citrus and a “smattering of anything else” they can make grow. Alana returned in 2015 to support their father and uncle with all aspects of the farm operation.Fifth-generation farmer Helen McGrath will also be joining the tour to discuss the big issues facing farming: water, labor and immigration, as well as common misconceptions and misunderstandings facing the farming community.Finally, we will caravan to a farming operation in Camarillo with multiple partners producing a variety of agriculture. The land has been farmed organically since the late 1980s and has supported and facilitated the careers for a new cohort of agriculturalists.Special thanks to all the farmers for welcoming us to their properties, and to Chef Kai Krupa, for providing a delicious, hearty lunch.

Poetry and piano combine in this popular event.In this year’s program, Cultural Amnesia, performers Mark Sconce and Vera Kong will feature piano medleys interspersed with American, Irish, and Russian poems inspired by the idea that forgetting past poetry in favor of modern works risks missing the wisdom and insights that poets are known for.Mark and Vera’s presentation is a collection of meaningful poetry and music performed with dramatic effect, flair and excitement. Mark has entertained many audiences with his commentary and recitations of various poets and their work. His repertoire includes famous poets Robert Frost, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Dorothy Parker and William Butler Yeats along with several more obscure Russian poets you may not know. Vera’s musical prowess melds with Mark’s recitations to make for a magical afternoon.A scrumptious lunch will be provided by Karen Schloss Heimberg. Join us for an exclusive tour of the fabulous Taft Gardens & Nature Preserve. A natural 264-acre Eden nestled in the foothills of Ojai, Taft features 12 acres of unique landscaped gardens, home to some of California’s rarest mature botanical specimens.We will be led on a private 90-minute tour through this garden of hidden gems. With spectacular spring blooms to highlight our visit, we’ll meander the grounds and explore this world-class destination for botanists, plant enthusiasts and nature lovers.Surrounding the landscaped gardens, a vast preserve of pristine California habitat is a haven for hundreds of species of native plants and animals that live and migrate through the area. Our adventure will begin in Montecito, where we’ll board a comfortable coach to transport us to Ojai. ¿Que Pasa? Tamales y Margaritas!

Ah…the aroma of simmering pots of shredded pork and chicken and spicy chilies…greeting you as you walk through the doors of a beautiful Santa Barbara hacienda. Tamale making time is just around the corner in the kitchen! But wait! Before getting to work making tamales, step outside onto the patio to enjoy the breathtaking views while sipping margaritas and munching on freshly made guacamole and chips. When the corn husks, masa, meat and chilies are ready, step into the kitchen. Talented Chef Eve Ortiz will guide you through the cultural and culinary experience of making tamales—they are truly works of love and art! Making them is often a familial or social event, so enjoy the camaraderie as you prepare your tamales. Eve will guide you through the process of creating three different types of tamales, including a vegetarian option. And finally…time to sample some of the tasty tamales you’ve created and then fill your to-go bag with scrumptious tamales. While we often train new puppies, we forget that we can continue to strengthen the bond we have with our canine friends throughout their lives. At this unique event, learn how teaching your dog a few fun and easy tricks can improve behavior and strengthen obedience skills at any age, along with improving your dog’s health by building muscle and flexibility. This event will be held at a magnificent Montecito estate and led by an accredited professional local dog trainer with 25 years of experience. Using her own dogs, she will demonstrate the tricks she uses to help her dogs improve strength, balance and flexibility, while also winning multiple National Agility Championships. At the conclusion, all attendees will be given a mini-booklet containing details on how to teach their dog the tricks shown at the event. Retired from Carpinteria High School and Santa Barbara Community College, Rob continues to teach bird watching for the SBCC School of Extended Learning. He has been actively birding locally and globally (Hawaii, Jamaica, Nepal, Ireland, Peru, Costa Rica, Australia and New Zealand). With experience like that, how can you pass up this opportunity to join him as he shares his wealth of information and knowledge with all levels of birders?Due to a decent tide, quite a few interesting birds hunting and living at the marsh should be visible that day.
