“ Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels. Be mindful of prisoners as if sharing their imprisonment, and of the ill-treated as of yourselves….Let your life be free from love of money, but be content with what you have, for he said, ‘I will never forsake you or abandon you.’ Thus we can say with confidence: The lord is my helper, and I will not be afraid.” (Hebrews 13:2-6) Angels are active throughout the Bible: guarding the gate to Eden when Adam and Eve are expelled, guiding Abraham and Jacob, revealing God’s will to Ezekiel and Daniel, comforting Jesus after His temptation and agony in the garden, mentioned in St. Paul, and ready to gather all of the faithful on the Day of Judgement in the Book of Revelation. “Angel” means “messenger.” And their principle mission is praising God, and making sure that we know of God’s protection. In the Jewish tradition, there are seven great archangels, watching the four corners of the earth, above the earth, in the earth and below. They have been given the names: Michael, Gabriel, Raphiel, Uriel (who passed over Egypt), Samael, Sandalphon and Jophiel (who expelled Adam and Eve). Angels will never get in our way when we seek to be with Jesus. Rather, they are always leading us to Him. But they will always get in Satan’s way, unless we, of our own free will, are inviting evil into our lives and push them aside. “Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here. Ever this day be at my side to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.”
