The service delivery plan outlines expectations for the coaching relationships (participants, expectations, structure and tools).

School-Wide Data Based Decision Making - User Friendly Tool Continual school improvement requires that leaderhsip teams become fluent in the application of a data-based decision making process. School and district leadership teams need user friendly tools to assist them in this process. This session will share a tool that provides teams with a graphic organizer, guiding questions, scripted prompts and can be used across a school year in a continual cycle of improvement. Attendees will be given access to the tool, in Google Sheets format, to use with their teams.

Parent and Family Engagement Inventory

The purpose of the Parent and Family Engagement Inventory incorporates Joyce Epstein’s six types of parent engagement in a multi-tiered framework. The inventory is intended for schools and LEAs to identify their current practices to engage families, determine and analyze gaps, and strategically plan to meet the needs of parents and family at all tiers. The inventory has been used successfully in Utah by SPDG grantees to increase understanding of the different ways families can be engaged in their child’s education.

Utah’s Universal Supports

As MTSS spreads throughout Utah LEAs, many districts and schools request support for UMTSS. To provide universal (Tier 1) supports to LEAs throughout Utah, resources have been created to provide introductory training as well as a pathway through the system of resources. Coaching Your Coaches - How we are using data to inform and design professional development

The SPDG SIM Project in Florida has hosted a "Think Tank" for its coaches/professional developers each of the past three summers. The Think Tank is a multi-day professional development designed to reflect on the previous year's efforts and to prepare for the year ahead. The format has evolved each year based on data pulled from the project's Coaching Self-Assessment as well as observation of Professional Development. In this session project staff will share lessons learned and current best thinking.

Systematically Embedding Family Partnerships: Moving from supplemental to central

The joint Policy Statement of Family Engagement from the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services and Education recognizes family engagement as central, not supplemental, in educational systems and programs. It is an on-going challenge to integrate and embed family engagement practices into the systems and practices we develop in state and local initiatives. In this session we will share the lessons we have learned through Ohio’s SPDG Parent Teacher Partnerships and ask participants to explore how they can move best practices of family partnerships to the center of their work to improve systems of professional development and technical assistance.

Evaluating Coaching in the Oregon EBISS Project

Through an online data management system and extensive collaboration across PBIS, literacy and RTI providers, the OR SPDG has developed a common coaching log and participant coaching feedback survey. Coaches from numerous initiatives log in-school coaching events, including the focus of the coaching and follow-up steps. Participants of coaching receive and complete quarterly surveys evaluating the quality and effectiveness of specific coaching events. All data is real-time accessed by State Department, evaluators and coaches to inform responsive decision-making.

Making Informed Decisions in MTSS through Family Engagement Data

Measuring the degree to which families are engaged, and then using that data for targeting improvement can be challenging. The newly developed 15-item Family Engagement Survey (Noonan, Gaumer Erickson, & Groff, 2015) was used by the Kansas MTSS Integrated Framework buildings to provide a snapshot of family engagement around the PTA National Standards for Family-School Partnerships. The scale has been translated into Spanish and Hnmong, and offers a .92 overall reliability. The data are supplemented by School Implementation Scale Family domain items, completed by instructional staff to provide a more complete picture. Facilitated by MTSS Coaches and the Kansas Parent Information Resource Center (KPIRC) staff, data are then used by District and Building Leadership Teams to develop and implement their family engagement goals and plans.

Partnering with families through Leading by Convening

This ignite talk showcases the collaborative work the Wisconsin SPDG is doing with Wisconsin’s Family Parent Training and Information Center (WI FACETS) around family engagement. The collaborative efforts have adapted and personalized the Leading by Convening series with plans to include cohort schools and families in the training.

Using Web-based Coaching to Leverage Resources

Many large states grapple with the need to build project capacity and sustainability. Coaching, essential to the success of any professional learning, tends to be resource intensive. This presentation discusses one state’s limitations of time, money and personnel as a driver for leveraging technology to support an initiative promoting student engagement, especially targeted to young children with autism. Utilizing WebEx, UDL, appreciative inquiry and strategically edited, pre-videoed content enabled as many as five locations with multiple participants to be receive expert coaching in a single, off-site session.

Assessing the Effectiveness of Coaching in New Hampshire

The NH SPDG (Next Steps NH) created two evaluation tools based on the work of Kansas University researchers (Gaumer-Erickson, Noonan, et al.) and the Participatory Adult Learning Strategies (PALS) model. One tool is a survey completed by school personnel who received coaching. The second tool is an observation instrument used by SPDG leadership personnel to assess and support SPDG coaches.

Quick Reference Guides for Administrators

Quick reference guides on the Strategic Instruction Model™(SIM) were created to provide administrators with a “cheat sheet” of the Content Enhancement Routines and/or Learning Strategies that their teachers are implementing. The guide gives a short description of the routine or strategy, a picture of the device or a cue card that they might see students using, information on when they might see it being used and the results that teachers can expect with students.

College and Career Competency Framework: Translating Research for Multiple Audiences

We can likely agree that intra and interpersonal skills such as self-regulation, self-efficacy, networking and empathy are important for success in-school and post-school, but do you know research-based strategies for improving these competencies in middle and high schools? The College and Career Competency (CCC) Framework (Gaumer Erickson and Noonan, 2012) provides a framework to systematically teach intra and interpersonal competencies with an MTSS, embedding instruction and guided practice in core content and school-wide. Through establishing a strong core of social and emotional competency instruction, we work to support all students in developing these critical competencies. During this session, you will learn about the Framework, in addition to the CCC Wheel, Teacher Guides, Padlets, Questionnaires, and Family Guides to illustrate the development of a common vernacular and development of user-friendly, quality materials with similar information translating for a variety of users. Professional development on the CCC Framework is provided through the SPDG-funded Vermont virtual academy, and on-site professional development is provided through the State Departments of Education in Missouri, Arizona, and Kansas.

Colorado MTSS

This presentation will describe the upcoming Colorado State Personnel Development Grant, entitled Colorado Multi-Tiered System of Supports (CO-MTSS), which will work to integrate evidence-based practice, implementation science, and enabling contexts. We will describe Colorado’s novel vision of MTSS, our 5 essential components, and the 5 major goals of the project in an effort to improve outcomes for all students in Colorado, including those with disabilities.

Virtual Coaching: Reflections and Lessons Learned

This presentation will focus on lessons learned from implementation of online coaching in 2015-2016, including reflections on what went well and how the process is being improved for the 2016-2017 year. Coaching in the Idaho SPDG is offered across mediums: face-to-face, phone, and online (virtual). Given the need to reach rural target districts and decrease travel costs and time for coaches, Idaho is in its second year of shifting more and more of the coaching services to a virtual model.

Wyoming MTSS Implementation Checklist for Literacy & Behavior

The Wyoming MTSS team has developed an MTSS Implementation Checklist for Literacy and Behavior. The purpose of the checklist is to determine the extent to which school personnel are implementing the core features of school-wide MTSS for both literacy and behavior. District- and building-level teams utilize the checklist at interim points during the year. The checklist is part of a process that encourages discussion and provides guidance and next steps surrounding the four essential components

A Statewide Common Formative Assessment System

Missouri has developed learning packages for educators on Common Formative Assessment (CFA) and using the CFA data to drive instructional decision making. Through a better understanding of this data collection process and the quantification of this assessment data, educators have been trained to use cycles of measurement and assessment to demonstrate what students have learned. Coaches across the state work with school teams to verify the data cycles are being implemented with fidelity. Lastly, Missouri has developed a system of sharing these data cycle results between the school, their regional professional development center, and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education

Teacher Learning Hub: Online Professional Development

Come see how Montana’s MTSS uses the Moodle platform to reach out to all 37 schools in the grant as well as deliver online professional development to teachers all across the state, host online professional learning communities and hold meeting information. This saves schools districts money and minimizes the time teachers are away from the classroom. We have over 3,500 registered users, reached 275 schools and issued near 10,000 renewal units in one year!

A statewide Coaching Competency Practice Profile

This presentation will reveal Wisconsin’s proposal for a statewide coaching competency practice profile. This practice profile describes the essential functions that allow a coaching service delivery model to be teachable, learnable, and doable in typical human service settings. It consist of measurable and/or observable, behaviorally based indicators for each essential function and promotes consistency across practitioners at the level of actual service delivery.

Leveraging Online Modalities to Support Implementation

Face-to face training, while essential, is of limited value in that participation occurs at one moment in time, with one group of individuals and teams. Online training modules offer a way to supplement trainings and provide far-reaching support to schools in an efficient manner. Attendees will learn how the RIMTSS project is developing and using online modules to effectively support teams at all levels of training and implementation.

Collaborating to Improve Preservice Training in Transition

Learn about an approach to improving how transition knowledge and skills are taught in preservice special education certification programs, part of the New Hampshire Department of Education Next Steps statewide transition initiative. Transition competencies will be shared along with a continuous improvement process supported by web-accessible tools used for program review and action planning. Keene State College and Plymouth State University teach transition differently, and use the same program improvement process.

This session will discuss the strategies that the NH Parent Information Center has developed for these purposes as well as the overall challenges and successes in achieving SPDG goals

Establishing and Sustaining Interdepartmental Collaboration to Align Early Literacy and PD Initiatives

The OK SPDG has begun to work in collaboration with the OSDE’s Special Education Services and the Office of Instruction to align statewide initiatives in the area of improving early literacy outcomes for Oklahoma students, as outlined in the OK SSIP and the OK State Strategic Plan. The focus of both initiatives revolves around evidenced based (E-B) professional development and follow-up through site-based coaching support for teachers in implementing E-B practices. A collaborative working group has been formed and has agreed on using 2 PD frameworks: Fundamentals of Literacy Instruction (FOLI) and Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS). How should this working group proceed to ensure its efforts result in a positive impact on the desired outcomes of both the SSIP and the State Strategic Plan?

We hired an evaluator, now what?

Any relationship with an external evaluator begins with an inception phase requiring a draw on resources, be they person-hours, or data being exchanged. But what if that evaluator comes on board during a busy, or perhaps even the busiest time of your program or project year? How does one ensure that the mutual system of support is prepared to thrive following intentional and somewhat concentrated activity during those vital early months? This session will share the narrative of two states around just such an experience, with presenters sharing some hints and tips based on lessons learned in the past year, so that participants can engage in their own lively discussion around the topic while walking out the door armed with new tools to support their next evaluator.

Supporting High Schools to Increase Parent Engagement in Secondary Transitions

Scaling Up MTSS With Limited Resources

Utah SPDG has provided coaching and support to LEAs to build capacity to implement MTSS with fidelity. At issue is, with limited grant funds and MTSS coaching knowledge/expertise, only a small number of the total LEAs in the state are included in the project. Evaluation Briefs: Disseminating Evaluation Data

How do we get stakeholders to actually read evaluation reports? How do we use evaluation data to build awareness and support recruitment? The Kansas Technical Assistance Systems Network (TASN) had developed evaluation briefs (one-page evaluation summaries) to highlight the implementation and impact of SPDG/TASN projects. These briefs have been widely disseminated across KSDE, stakeholder groups, and district personnel.
