#44 Hailee Hall looks to score a basket during her senior year. Hall leads this decade with 506
points.
2016-2017 Millington Girls’ Basketball Media Guide
facebook.com/MillingtonGirlsBasketball 9
For the first time since the 2013-2014
season, the Millington girls’ varsity
basketball team will boast multiple seniors
on the roster. With just one senior gracing
the roster in the 2014-2015 season and
none in 2015-2016, the Cardinals finished
the seasons with a 13-9 and 12-9 records
respectively and consecutive losses in the
Michigan High School Athletic
Association’s (MHSAA) district semi-final
game.
The Red and White will have four returning
seniors and four returning juniors with a
combined experience of 14 varsity
basketball seasons. “Anytime a varsity
team is returning eight players and three-
quarters of those players are entering their
third year of varsity basketball, hopes run
high for a successful season,” says first-
year head coach Christian Selich.
The Cardinals’ welcome back two 2nd team
All-Conference selections in senior Haley
Trickey and junior Hannah Hall. By the
time this season has passed, Trickey will be
this decade’s career leader in steals and
assists. Hall, the Class C state high-jump
champion in 2016, was the 2015-2016
team’s leading scorer, leading rebounder
and was voted the Offensive MVP during
the end of season banquet. “Trickey and
Hall will be two big components of our
team’s success this year,” says Coach
Selich. “Trickey will be asked to run the
floor and distribute the ball. We have
three girls all 5’10” and above. One of our
focuses night in and night out will be
scoring in the paint. As the primary ball
handler, that job lies at Trickey’s feet to get
the ball down low.”
Hall (5’11”), junior Elizabeth Selich (6’0”),
and senior Jenna Meacham (5’10”) will
form a long front court that will prove to be
difficult for defensive match-ups from any
opposing team. “We will have one of the
tallest front courts in the area for our size
of school,” said Coach Selich. “Our front
court is not only tall but they are athletic as
well. They can get up and down the court.
Hall is a state champion high jumper, and
Selich and Meacham are both all-
conference soccer players. We would not
be able to play the type of up-tempo game
that we like to play and have these three
on the floor at the same time if they were
not athletic.”
Entering their third year on the varsity
squad are seniors Kayla Petzold and Molly
Wolfington, along with junior Sydney
Olmstead. Petzold’s versatility will come in
handy for Coach Selich and his staff this
year as she can play any position on the
court. She is quick enough to play a guard
and strong enough to play a post.
Wolfington, an honorable mention all-
conference selection as a sophomore, adds
a long-range threat making the most 3-
point shots over the last two years.
Olmstead’s quiet confidence will help keep
the Cardinal’s in check on the floor. Not to
mention, she is another long-range threat.
Olmstead led the team in 3-points shots
last season, and was voted one of the top
3-point shooters in the Saginaw area by the
Saginaw News. “The thing I really like
about these three ladies is their leadership
ability,” says Coach Selich. “Petzold was
the team’s captain last year and also serves
as a captain on the varsity soccer team.
Wolfington and Olmstead will serve as
captains for this year’s basketball team.
Both Molly and Sydney believe in the
mantra, ‘Leadership through Service.’ “
Last season’s Defensive MVP, junior
Makayla Bremer will be returning for her
second season of varsity basketball.
Bremer a defensive specialist always drew
the assignment of covering the opposing
team’s best player in a man-to-man match-
up. “Bremer is a very unique defensive
player. She is quick and hard-nosed which
you want out of any defender, but her
wingspan is 68” which is about two inches
more than her height. Which is why she
always seems to be in a passing lane,” said
Coach Selich.
The Cardinals begin play on November 29
when they travel 10 minutes north on M-
15 to take on rival Vassar. They open Tri-
Valley East conference play on December 8
when they travel to Bridgeport. “We will
have a very competitive conference this
year,” says Coach Selich. “We have only
beaten Frankenmuth once in our
program’s history and they have won 94
straight conference games. We have not
beaten Birch Run in a few years. We lost to
Lakeville twice last year, they have almost
everyone back. Garber is up and coming,
and Caro has a new coach and a new
attitude. We are looking for consistency
and competitiveness in the conference
before we get to the MHSAA post-season.”
