SUMMER IS COMING IN HOT! Summer break is roughly 20 schools days away and our coaching staff is preparing for an exciting
challenge ahead. Today’s athletes are faced with incredibly demanding schedules from June to Au-
gust and at times it can be overwhelming for all of us. However, at the 4A level in Indiana...if you are
not working, you are falling behind. We have a wonderful schedule put together once again for our
off-season and we really hope your son will consider being a part of it.
The summer kicks off the first week of June (5/31—6/3) as we hold our annual Seymour Basketball
camp at SMS. The camp focuses primarily on individual skill development, but showcases bits and
pieces of our offensive and defensive philosophies in a team setting as well. Kids that attend our sum-
mer camp also get an opportunity to take part in our youth outdoor league in July. This is always one
of the coolest events of the summer for our staff and players. Additionally, our summer will feature
team camps for all players interested in grades 7-12, and weekly practices and weight training ses-
sions to enhance skills taught at camp.
We are very excited about the future of our program. Players are improving every day and the pro-
gram as a whole is really beginning to gain strength and momentum. We are eagerly anticipating the
opportunity to work with your son again this summer. Get signed up online now and reserve your
spot today! Happy Swishes, Coach Clough

Cummings & Perry Earn Top 100 Showcase Invite
A big congratulations goes
out to sophomores Tiller
Cummings and Alan Perry
on being invited to the
IBCA/IHSAA top 100. They
were nominated by coaches
in the area and selected by a
committee of coaches, and
past coaches, that reviewed
those nominations. They will
have the opportunity to play
in front of a large contingen-
cy of college coaches and
those people that select the
Indiana All-Stars and All-State
teams. It is truly on honor to
have players attend this
event.

“Grit 2 Great”
Courage
Conscientiousness:
Achievement Oriented vs.
Dependable
Long Term Goals and
Endurance: Follow Through
Resilience: Optimism,
Confidence and Creativity
Excellence vs. Perfection
After a long demanding basketball
season, springtime offers us valua-
ble opportunities to reflect, rejuve-
nate and refocus on the short term
and long term goals of our program.
We use this time of year to establish
our theme for the upcoming season.
A lot goes into this process, it’s so
much more than searching for a
catchy hashtag to attach to messag-
es posted on social media. Our
theme is something we take a great
deal of pride in establishing to make
sure our players, parents, and fami-
lies understand what we are work-
ing towards. It’s something we use
to define the hard work and sacrific-
es our players will make in order to
take the next big steps necessary to
reach our long term goals. This year
our theme will be “Grit 2 Great.”
Angela Duckworth's research at the
University of Pennsylvania demon-
strates that the key predictor of suc-
cess is not talent, title, wealth, or
good looks. It is Grit: the ability to
work hard for a long period of time
toward a focused goal and keep
moving forward in spite of challeng-
es, obstacles and failures.
Duckworth says, "Grit is passion and
perseverance for long term goals.
It's a marathon not a sprint."
Bestselling author Jon Gordon adds,
“Grit keeps you moving forward
through the sting of rejection, pain
of failure and struggle with adversi-
ty. When life knocks you down you
may want to stay down and give up
but Grit won't let you quit.”
This begs the question, why does
Grit keep you moving forward? How
does it work? If Grit drives you what
drives Grit? Gordon believes, “Grit
starts with knowing what you truly
want. When you know what you
want and you can see it, you will
work hard and persevere in order to
achieve it.”
True Grit is also driven by clarity of
mind, purpose, passion, optimism,
faith, love, hope and quite honest-
ly...stubbornness. Knowing your
why, refusing to give up, ignoring
the critics, believing in the possible,
loving what you do and showing up
day in and day out keeps you on the
path towards your vision.
In 2016-17, we want kids at all lev-
els of the Seymour Basketball pro-
gram to understand that GRIT will
play a major role in our ability to be
GREAT.
Introducing 2016-17 Seymour Basketball Motto
5 Characteristics of Grit,
How many do you have? Forbes.com
Seymour AAU Participation on the Rise While many of our players have
turned in their high tops for base-
ball and track spikes, many oth-
ers have continued to refine their
craft on the AAU basketball cir-
cuit. Playing for an AAU team
provides one of the best ad-
vantages for a young basketball
player looking to improve their
game skills in the off season.
Joining a team does not guaran-
tee a player’s spot on next year’s
roster, but it certainly benefits
our players in many other ways.
Trying out for a team demon-strates a player’s dedication to the sport. Making the team and being committed to the team shows coaches that a player is willing to do what it takes to im-prove his skills and match up against the top competition in the area.
AAU teams provide a differ-ent environment for kids to focus on advancing basketball skills.
Travel teams provide players opportunities to travel the region to participate in a variety of tour-naments competing against the top players in a player’s age group.
Joining an elite AAU basketball team will also help players gain more exposure during the col-lege recruiting process.
Playing on a travel team will only improve a player’s skill level and experience. Kids will be able to bring their experiences back to our school teams and carry it with them as they transition to the next level. We are very proud and support-ive of our multi-sport athletes. We are also extremely pleased with the number of kids continu-ing to play our great sport this spring. We look forward to get-ting everyone back together to work on moving forward as a team in our summer sessions.
