More on Kindergartenreadiness from the desk of Ms“C”:

A preschool parent said to uslast week...that “ it seemed like4K is the next thing to do after 3year old preschool”?! We know some familieswill make that choice. 4 K certainly does provideprogramming for many.

At Noah’s Ark, we believe that our programmingrivals any in the city. We love offering yourchildren age appropriate activities that encouragethem to explore and discover. Our classroom isset up for children to make good choices, buildingon the materials and activities that we set up forthem. They also learn how to be good listeners, sharing friends, classroom helpers, and muchmore.

I had a conversation with an alumni parentrecently, who works in an area school. Hercomments centered around Noah’s Ark childrenwho are used to being peacemakers at school, andregularly work through situations and transitions. She said they were easy to pick out in theclassroom. She also said that many of thechildren in the Kindergarten class she spends timein were not prepared with these social skills thatare central to the Noah’s Ark curriculum. Shesaid much time is spent coaching children throughappropriate behaviors each day. Our fall studentteacher, Amanda, loved the atmosphere at Noah’sArk. She had spent time in other classrooms andrecognized a great environment.

February is DentalHealth Month... If you are in the DentalHealth field and wouldlike to share with one ofour classes good dentalhealth skills andinformation, please contactMs “C”, and she will getyou scheduled.

In your 2015-2016 orientation booklet, youcan find info on the screening that we do witheach of the beautiful children of Noah’s Ark.The sheets are light purple, and cover thepreschool development areas of social-emotional, self-help, oral language, creative-self expression, physical/motor, andintellectual/mental. During January, February, and March, we work one-to-one with yourchildren, observing these areas. We also fillout screening forms, that you will receiveupon our completion of this HUGE project. Ittakes time, and we only devote a portion ofour day to screening, so that our regularschedule continues for the children. If youhave specific questions, be sure to ask.

You will receive these materials before our

parent - t eacher confer encesscheduled for April 11, 14 & 15.AND it will be fun for you to read and discussas a family. Yourc h i l d r e n a r eamazing!!

(December, 2015)

“How are your kids?”, I asked a good friend. She responded wryly, “Oh, the oldest is aseasy as she’s always been...but the youngestis still bent on world domination.”

Oh, the perils of parenthood! None aregreater than the lull created when apeacemaking tot comes along first, deludingus into believing that we actually know whatwe are doing. Then along comes the onewho brings our knees to the ground.

What can we do if we have at least one childwho attempts to dominate the entire family? Here are some tips:

1.Avoid getting on the same levelKids with this personality will do a varietyof things to bring us down to their level...oractually reverse the roles. These includearguing, nasty looks, passive resistance, etc. Remember: If a child can pull me into adebate or argument, I am no longer theparent.

2. Establish privacy boundariesThese children feel entitled to be involved inevery conversation and every activity. When they aren’t they create chaos to bringthe focus back to them. So saying: “This isour time”, or “This is a private conversationbetween your mom and me”, or “You maystay with us as long as you aren’t

interrupting”, are very importantboundaries.

3. Let your authority outlast theirsMany children train their parents to stopsetting and enforcing expectations. They doso by arguing, screaming, or yelling everytime a limit is set or something is asked ofthem. No matter how difficult it may be,please show them that you will remainloving and strong. You’ll never regret this.

4. Don’t allow them to see a loop hole inthe parentingThese kids can sniff out any type of divisionbetween their parents or their parents and theschool. When they do, they’ll use it tocreate chaos and to dominate the situation. Never let them turn their problem into aproblem between you and someone else.

Fortunately, bright and strong-willed kidswill remain bright and strong-willed kids. While we can’t change their basicpersonalities, we can up the odds that they’lluse their great passion and perseverance forgood.
