quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experi-ence of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic com-mitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the con-ference.

Fifty-nine teams from all 23 North Coast sports and nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2013-14 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming cham-pionship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title for the 33rd time in program history. Conference members have accumulated 68 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983.

In the 2013-14 academic year, 223 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDAAcademicAll-Americacertificatesweredistrib-uted to student-athletes from North Coast schools.

The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country.

The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist,butthattheycanflourish.TheNCACcontinuesasapace-setter in the 21st century.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excel-lence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The Col-legeofWooster,alongwithaffiliatememberEarlhamCollege— the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need notbesacrificedinordertomeetrigidacademicstandards.

Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been grantedchapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored.

A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s

sports are among the most offered by any Divi-sion III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s ath-letics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

The goals of the confer-ence express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic Cody Buresh, Wabash

DENISON SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 2015 NORTH COAST MEN’S LACROSSE CAMPAIGN

North Coast Athletic Conference coaches have tabbed Denison as the favorite for the 2015 men’s lacrosse season based on preseason balloting.

TheBigRed,whoarethedefendingNCACregularseasonandtournamentchampions,earnedsixofninepossiblefirst-placevotes cast by league coaches to total 78 points. Ohio Wesleyan, which leads the league with 18 conference championships, earnedthefinalthreefirst-placevotesandfinishedsecondinthepollwith75points.Wittenberglandedinthethirdspotwith59 points, followed by Kenyon (55), Oberlin (43), Wooster (41), DePauw (26), Hiram (16) and Wabash (12).

After leading the nation in team defense last season, the Big Red will again rely on a veteran backline in 2015, led by senior All-American Drew Newman (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) who started all 20 games last spring and accumulated 38 groundballs and 25 caused turnovers. While junior Blair Farinholt (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher’s School) is the Big Red’s leading returning scorer from a year ago with 45 points (34 g, 11 a), classmate Eric Baumgardner (Washington, DC/Gonzaga College)willagainjump-starttheDUoffensefromthefaceoffXafterfinishing11thinthenationlastspringin faceoff percentage by winning 246-of-369 attempts. Baumgardner also scooped up 139 groundballs in 2014 to lead the Big Red in that category as well. The Big Red boast a strong contingent in goal this season, led by the junior duo of Clark Bullington (Houston, TX/Strake Jesuit College Prep) and Chris Thomas (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola Blakefield). In 13 starts last spring, Thomas accumulated 76 saves and allowed 69 goals in 704 minutes of action for a 5.88 goals-against-average,whileBullingtonstartedthefinalsixgamesoftheseason,collecting53savesandallowing41goalsin423minutesfor a 5.81 GAA. Head Coach Mike Caravana returns to the sidelines in Granville this spring for his 22nd season as one of the winningest coaches in college lacrosse with an overall record of 225-81 (.735) in 21 years at the helm.

Ohio Wesleyan leads all NCAC teams with 18 championships in 30 years. Denison, which has won at least a share of four-straight league titles, follows OWU with 15 all-time, while Wittenberg has two and Kenyon and Wooster can each boast one championship.TheNCAChashadtri-championsonthreeseparateoccasions,firstin2000whentheBigRed,BishopsandLords shared the title, then in 2004, when Denison, OWU and Wooster each had a piece of the crown, only to have it happen again in 2011 with Denison, Wittenberg and Ohio Wesleyan sharing the top spot. The conference also saw Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg share the conference crown in 2010.
