Expectations are high as the Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse pro-‐gram enters its inaugural season in the Northeast Conference in2014. The Hawks return 23 letterwinners, including all 10 starters,and welcome 19 newcomers under the direction of third-‐yearhead coach Taylor Wray.

OFFENSE The Hawks return last season’s top four scorers in sophomoreattack Pat Swanick, junior attack Matt Sarcona, junior midfielderMike Dougherty and senior midfielder Johnny Simanski, a corethat combined for 57 percent (59-‐of-‐103) of SJU’s total goals in2013. A 2013 CAA All-‐Rookie selection, Swanick (22G, 6A) led theteam with 28 points and ranked in the top five of every offensivecategory. With Sarcona (14G, 5A) also on the front line, the lead-‐ing and second-‐leading scoring duo from last season is expected toshow explosive scoring potential in 2014. Dougherty (13G, 8A) and Simanski (10G, 7A) will patrol themidfield this season. Dougherty enters this year after a team-‐best81 shots on a team-‐best 43 shots on goal last season whileSimanski ranked in the top five in all offensive categories for theHawks. With a combined five seasons between the veterans,Dougherty and Simanski will be significant factors on both theoffensive and defensive ends of the field in 2014. With the highly anticipated return of redshirt junior RyanMcGee (4G, 3A), who recorded seven points in just two games lastseason and owns career numbers of 42 goals and 21 assists, SJU’soffensive unit has the opportunity to make a mark in the NEC thisyear. Another returning group of considerable notice is the midfieldquartet of juniors Josh Cavanaugh (4G, 5A) and Rob Watts (5G,2A) and sophomores Richard Gabelman (3G, 2A) and BryanGarrahan (4G, 2A). All four saw action in all 16 games in 2013 andprovide substantial depth off the bench for the Hawks. Junior Kyle Bruun (2G) and sophomores Joe McErlean (1G,19GB), Matt Blasco (2G), and Chase Elliott, and will also return tothe offensive end of the field this season. Newcomers Miles Davis,Michael Rastivo, Robert Raucci, Parker Self, and Ray Vandegriftwill add to the attack, while Tyler Cliggett, Anthony Joaquim,Mike Lanham, Danny Manning, Brian McNamara, MarcusMilione, Kevin Reidinger, and Evan Wolf will be expected to makecontributions in the midfield.

FACEOFF Senior midfielder Will Abbott returns as SJU’s faceoff special-‐ist after posting a .450 percentage (118-‐of-‐262) in 2013. Abbottalso ranked second on the team in ground balls (37). Classmate Billy Annesleywill also see time at the X and enters2014 with a career faceoff percentage of .361 (56-‐of-‐155) whilefreshmen Charles Giunta (.560 face-‐off percentage as a senior),Mike Lanham (FCA face-‐off champion), and Danny Manning (.750face-‐off percentage as a senior) also have considerable high schoolexperience from the X and could be contributors this year.

DEFENSE The defensive unit is set with the junior trio of Kevin Barrow,Will Farrell, and Jack Moran. Farrell led the team in ground balls(44) and caused turnovers (24) last season while Barrow (22GB,12CT) and Moran (16GB, 9CT) were also solid on the back line. Thethree defensive veterans started all 16 games last season to com-‐bine for 82 ground balls and 49 percent (45-‐of-‐92) of SJU’s totalcaused turnovers. Juniors Dylan O’Donnell and Guy Talarico, sophomoresCameron Riley and John Winchell, and freshmen Charles Giunta,Connor Kubikowski, Shane Taggert, and Jared Wolf will look toadd to the defensive unit.

GOALKEEPERS Junior Dustin Keen earned the starting role between the pipesfor the Hawks last season and returns as SJU’s starting goalkeeperin 2014. Keen had a standout sophomore season, starting all 16contests to boast a 9.90 goals-‐against average and .503 saves per-‐centage in 860:16. Keen averaged 10.25 saves against nationallyranked opponents and made 10-‐plus saves on seven differentoccasions in 2013. Freshmen T.J. Jones and James Superka will back up Keen ingoal.

OVERALL "We've still got a lot of question marks in our line up," saidWray. "There's going to be a lot of shuffling over the next threeweeks. There are 20 practices and three scrimmages to watch theguys compete and evaluate who's going to be in what roles onFebruary 15th. One thing I can say is this is the tightest it's beenover the last two years in terms of the separation between playersat each position."

NORTHEAST CONFERENCE


It is with great pride and anticipation that the Northeast Conference(NEC) enters its 33rd year as an NCAA Division I athletic conference. Tenstrong and committed to strengthening the Conference from within, theNEC comes off the most successful year in league history in terms of ath-‐letic and academic success. Poised for a new era of growth, innovationand achievement under the leadership of Noreen Morris, the Conferencewill continue to build around the theme of #NECPride. The NEC and its member institutions are committed to providingopportunities for student-‐athletes to achieve their fullest potential bothin athletic competition and in the classroom. Likewise, the Conferencecontinually strives to be an NCAA Division I leader for student-‐athleteachievement, academic excellence, integrity, sportsmanship, equity anddiversity, community partnership and national engagement. When the Northeast Conference (NEC) was first established as theECAC-‐Metro Conference back in 1981, the league’s founders had one goalin mind: to create a competitive NCAA Division I men’s basketball confer-‐ence for unaffiliated schools on the Eastern seaboard. A single-‐sport enti-‐ty at its inception, the NEC has grown far beyond expectations over thepast three plus decades, having transformed itself into a 10-‐member, 22-‐sport conference. In recent years, the NEC has taken aim at elevating the brand aware-‐ness of the league, elevating the caliber of its championship events andenhancing the opportunities and experiences for student-‐athletes thatcompete in the Conference. The NEC has raised its commitment to basketball through a host ofstrategic initiatives, most notably via a Brand and BasketballEnhancement fund, revised scheduling parameters and the implementa-‐tion of state-‐of-‐the-‐art LED signage at all arenas. The NEC has also pro-‐vided each institution with a basketball marketing grant that resulted inthe highest attendance on the men’s side in 15 years and the highest per-‐game average in women’s basketball history last season. The remarkable success story of the Conference began to unfold in1985, when the league began sponsoring additional sports. Three yearslater, a change of name was in order and the Northeast Conference as weknow it today was born. With membership and sport sponsorship contin-‐uing to grow over the years, the NEC now enjoys qualification or play-‐inaccess to 14 different NCAA Championships (baseball, men’s andwomen’s basketball, football, men’s and women’s golf, men's andwomen’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s andwomen’s tennis and women’s volleyball).

Though the NEC has featured various incarnations since its inception,charter members Fairleigh Dickinson, LIU Brooklyn, Robert Morris, St.Francis Brooklyn, Saint Francis U and Wagner remain part of the current10-‐school alignment. They are joined by Mount St. Mary’s (admitted in1989), Central Connecticut (1997), Sacred Heart (1999) and Bryant(2012). The NEC's six-‐state geographic footprint includes access to suchmajor media markets as New York City, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Hartfordand Providence. NEC member institutions now compete in 22 championship sports:baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s bowling, men’s andwomen’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s andwomen’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s andwomen’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s soccer, softball,women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. The NEC opened the 2013-‐14 academic year by introducing a mod-‐ernized version of its primary and secondary marks, giving theConference a fresh, yet familiar look moving forward. The next evolution of NEC Front Row will come this fall with thedebut of HD quality webcasts around the league. Likewise, with HDTricasters being provided to each institution, schools will be able torecord games in broadcast quality high definition from multiple angles.With this long-‐term upgrade, highlights from Front Row broadcasts canbe fed to local news stations, regional sports networks and ESPN(SportsCenter Top-‐10), or used during NEC-‐TV games. The equipmentwill also come bundled with an HD replay system to be implemented forthe 2013-‐14 basketball season. Beginning in the fall of 2013, the NEC’s online digital network willalso have its own iPhone/iPad application that can be downloaded at nocost. Live and on-‐demand events will also be free of charge, and fans cantake part in the conversation through the app’s built-‐in social media capa-‐bilities. Coming off the success of its #NECPride, Moon Magic documentaryshort, the NEC also plans to go back and revisit some of the greatestteams, student-‐athletes and moments that have shaped the league’s his-‐tory, all under the #NECPride film banner.

Taylor Wray enters his third season as head coach for the Saint Joseph’s men's lacrosseteam in 2014, having been named the fourth head coach in the program’s history on August 1,2011.

Last season, Wray and his staff led Saint Joseph's to afive-‐win season and its second victory against a ColonialAthletic Association opponent.

In 2012, Wray and his staff led an inspired group to a six-‐win season and its first victory against a Colonial AthleticAssociation opponent as a member of the conference.

With just nine wins in the previous three seasons com-‐bined, Wray led a 2012 Hawk team that tied for eighth in thecountry in overall improvement, led the nation in win per-‐centage increase and tied for fourth in the nation in biggestjump in total number of wins with six overall victories.

He came to Saint Joseph's after serving as an assistantcoach at Lehigh University from 2008-‐11. Wray possesses awealth of high-‐level playing and coaching experience, havingplayed on the collegiate level at Duke University and profes-‐sionally in the National Lacrosse League.

"We are thrilled and honored to have Taylor join theSaint Joseph's athletic community," said DiJulia. "He hasachieved great things as both a player and a coach. His passion, leadership and vision willadvance the Saint Joseph's lacrosse program to become a contender in the Colonial AthleticAssociation."

"I can't thank Don Dijulia and the search committee enough for giving me the opportunityto be the head coach of the Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team," Wray said on his appointment."It is an honor and a privilege to lead this program and I am excited to get started. I know wehave a tremendous amount of hard work in front of us, but I am confident we can rebuild a win-‐ning tradition. This is an exciting time for me and my wife as we are thrilled to be joining theHawks' lacrosse family, and we can't wait to get to know the team, parents and alumni."

Wray joined the Lehigh staff in September 2007 and served as the defensive coach andrecruiting coordinator. The Mountain Hawks made great strides during his tenure and in 2011,registered the nation's eighth biggest improvement according to LaxPower's computer ratings.Lehigh qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 2006, while thedefense lowered its goals against average by almost one goal.

"It has been an honor to have my good friend Taylor Wray on staff here at Lehigh for thelast four years," said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. "He has been a key component to theoverall growth of the program and I have no doubt that he will make a terrific head coach atthe Division I level. I wish him all the best as he gets set to take over the lacrosse program atSaint Joseph's University."

From 2003 to 2006 Wray was an assistant coach at Queens University of Charlotte (N.C.)and then served as the lacrosse coach, academic coordinator and strength and conditioningspecialist at the National Sport Academy for one year in 2007.

He enjoyed a successful playing career at Duke, helping the Blue Devils to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and winningACC Tournament titles in 2001 and 2002. Serving as the team captain in 2003, he earned the Eric Tyler Hardy Defensive Player of the Yearaward and was a four-‐time selection to the ACC Academic Honor Roll.

"For the people who know Taylor like I do, it is understood that he is going to be a star in this profession," said Mike Pressler, Wray's coachat Duke and the current head coach at Bryant University. "In my 29 years of college coaching, I've never come across a better leader. He is ayoung man of impeccable character and high moral fiber and just one of the true gentlemen in our game today. It's going to be very excitingfor me to follow Taylor's coaching career from afar as he very quickly takes the Saint Joseph's program to the next level, as we know he will."

Upon graduating from Duke in 2003 with a bachelor's of science degree, he was drafted second overall by the Calgary Roughnecks of theNational Lacrosse League. He made an immediate impact, being named the 2004 Rookie of the Year, the Defensive Player of the Year and aFirst Team All-‐Star while helping Calgary to the NLL Championship. A three-‐time NLL All-‐Star, played for the Philadelphia Wings from 2008-‐11and served as team captain in 2011.

A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Wray has also excelled internationally. He is currently an assistant coach for the Canadian National Team;he was the defensive coordinator for the 2012 U-‐19 Team and is currently the defensive coordinator for the 2014 Men's National Team. Heserved in the same role for the 2010 National Team, which finished second at the 2010 World Championships. As a player, he was a memberof the National Team which captured the International Lacrosse Federation World Championship for field lacrosse in 2006 and for indoorlacrosse in 2007. He was named to the All-‐World Team in 2007.

Wray received a master's degree in teaching from Queens University in 2006. His wife,Lauren (nee Gallagher), was an All-‐American lacrosse player at Duke. They have two sons,Jackson and Ryan.

Dan Keating enters his third year with the Hawks and his second year as associate head coachwhere he serves as the extra man offensive coordinator and assistant offensive coordinator.

Keating helped SJU's 2012 squad increase its overall goal production by nearly two goals anouting, and the Extra Man Offense nearly doubled its conversion percentage, good for a 17-‐spotimprovement in the national polls.

Keating came from Lehigh University where he worked as the extra man offensive coordina-‐tor and as the assistant offensive coordinator. In 2011, the Lehigh Extra Man Unit finished ninthin the country in terms of scoring percentage and second in the Patriot League in terms of goalsscored. As the assistant offensive coordinator, Keating helped develop the Lehigh offense that fin-‐ished the 2011 season averaging 10.44 goals per game.

Prior to joining the Mountain Hawk's staff, Keating served as the Head Coach of MalvernPrep. In 2010, Malvern won the regular season Inter-‐Ac Championship. Under his leadership,Malvern produced two High-‐School All-‐Americans, one Underarmour All-‐American, three All-‐state players, and five first-‐team All Inter-‐Ac players.

In addition to coaching at Malvern Prep, Keating has also served as the Head Coach of St. Joseph's Prep and The Taft School. During histhree years at St. Joseph's Prep, his teams compiled a record of 61-‐22, including a 4-‐3 record in the Pennsylvania state playoffs. While at St.Joseph's Prep, Keating coached 24 first-‐team All-‐Catholic League players, three of whom earned All-‐state honors.

Keating, who graduated from Duke University in 1999, was a member of three NCAA Tournament teams, including the Blue Devils' 1997squad that reached the NCAA Final Four. A member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll, Keating earned his master's degree in secondary educa-‐tion from Saint Joseph's University.

Keating is the founder and owner of Keating Lacrosse Clinics, LLC, which focuses on teaching the fundamentals of the game to aspiringyouth lacrosse players. He and his wife Kristin reside in Philadelphia.

Steve Grossi returns for his second season as an assistant coach in 2013-‐14. Grossi is prima-‐

rily responsible for SJU's defensive personnel, face-‐off team, and goalkeepers.

in all aspects of the program. As the defensive coor-‐

dinator, Grossi worked closely with the defensive

units and goalies and coached All-‐Conference play-‐

ers each season. During his time at Hampden-‐

Sydney, the Tigers appeared in the Old Dominion

Athletic Conference playoffs every year.

him as he settles into the new role," said Saint Joseph's head coach Taylor Wray. "Steve was high-‐

ly recommended by all who have been involved with him as a coach and player. He will be work-‐

ing primarily with our defensive personnel, face-‐off team, and goalies."

gram," said Grossi. "I look forward to working at a university with such a great academic reputa-‐

tion with a passion for college athletics. Having the chance to work with Coach Wray and Coach

Keating is an absolute honor. I am extremely thankful.

A 2009 graduate of Drexel University, Grossi earned a bachelor's of science degree in busi-‐

ness administration with concentrations in finance and marketing. A four-‐year starter for the

Dragons, Grossi was a four-‐time All-‐CAA selection, earning second-‐team honors in 2005 and 2006

while being tabbed first team in 2007 and 2008. A two-‐time pre-‐season honorable mention All-‐

American, Grossi was on the 2008 Tewaarton Trophy Watch List and was voted the team's Most

Valuable Player as a senior.

The two-‐time captain was a key figure in the Dragon's defense that fin-‐

ished seventh in the nation in both 2007 and 2008 when Drexel won a share

of the CAA regular season championship. Grossi also helped guide the

Dragons to highlight victories for the Drexel program, including an upset

overtime victory over national powerhouse and #1 ranked University of

Virginia in 2007.

After his standout career at Drexel, Grossi was a member of the

Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League in 2008-‐09. He was also

a Developmental/Player Coach and a member of the Glenelg Lacrosse Club

in Adelaide, South Australia, where he earned Most Valuable Player honors

at the Australia National Championships in the summer of 2010.

Additionally, Grossi was a graduate assistant coach at Drexel University

for the 2008-‐09 season, assisting with the team defense and man-‐down

units. Also a member of the Drexel University Junior Achievement Program

from 2005-‐07, Grossi was responsible for creating and implementing a

lacrosse program within the Philadelphia inter-‐city school districts.

ALL-‐TIME SJU ASSISTANT COACHES

Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has beenhome to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University inover 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU footballsquad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years andhas been home to over 700 SJU varsity games, matches and trackmeets. The pitch is the current home of the men’s and women’s soc-‐cer teams and the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. The field was renamed Sweeney Field in Fall 2013 upon comple-‐tion of an extensive expansion project. The venue has significantlyincreased the seating capacity for SJU’s varsity lacrosse and soccerprograms. The new name recognizes the contributions of Sean S.Sweeney ’94 (MBA), a member of the University’s Board of Trusteesand the lead benefactor to the renovation project. Sweeney Field wasblessed in conjunction with Hawktoberfest on October 12, 2013 whilea formal dedication will be held this spring The current expansion includes the addition of 1,200 permanentseats to the hillside nearest to the University’s iconic Barbelin Hall aswell as the addition of 1,100 portable seats on the opposite side ofthe field, increasing total seating capacity to 3,000. In addition, thefacility will includes a new state of the art press box and enhancedsound system. Opened in 1929 and planned as the centerpiece to a 70,000-‐seatfootball stadium, SJU was forced to eliminate the field’s originalgrandstand and hillside seating in 1960 due to the construction ofVilliger (now Post) Hall/Bluett Theater. Since 1990, the field hasundergone a number of upgrades and enhancements designed toexpand usage and functionality, including installation of AstroTurfartificial surface prior to the currently TigerTurf surface, lights, andbleachers. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber mate-‐rial in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons. Currently the home of SJU men’s and women’s varsity soccer andlacrosse teams, Sweeney Field has also served as the home venue forHawk baseball, field hockey, football and softball, in addition toperipheral usage by the men’s and women’s track teams, along withcountless club, intramural and recreational activities. Legend has itthat a 1777 Revolutionary War skirmish took place on the site. Finnesey Field had been named after the late James T. Finnesey.A native of Wyncote, Pa., parishioner at the Gesu and president of alocal auto manufacturer, he was a member of the Saint Joseph’sFoundation Committee which was established in 1922 to raise sup-‐port for the College’s relocation to Philadelphia’s Wynnefield neigh-‐borhood. Finnesey was a lead donor to the stadium project in 1927. Baseball re-‐occupied the space in 1947, calling Sweeney homeuntil 1959, and the Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer program was startedin 1958 and played every season but except 1960 at Sweeney. Thesquad has compiled an overall mark of 165-‐192-‐31 in 53 seasons at

Hawk Hill, the most victories of any program on Sweeney Field. SJUopened its playing grounds with a 6-‐0 victory over Rutgers-‐SouthJersey in October 24, 1958. In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Sweeney a trulymulti-‐purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered theuse of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next toMandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadi-‐um. The field hockey team played on Sweeney Field until 2007 andnow practices and hosts games on the new Ellen Ryan Field on theMaguire Campus. The location has also been home to women’s soc-‐cer since 1996 and the field hockey team wrapped up its last seasonon Sweeney in 2007. The women’s lacrosse squad is 71-‐100 in 20 seasons on HawkHill. The best season came in 2004 when the Hawks went 5-‐2 en routeto an 8-‐6 campaign. The first game was played on March 23, 1993when SJU defeated Gwynedd Mercy, 18-‐4. The men’s lacrosse team has compiled an overall 61-‐86 mark in20 seasons on Finnesey Field. Overall, the site has seen 1,224 games entering the 2013-‐14 aca-‐demic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 556-‐617-‐51.

• The men’s lacrosse team defeated Massachusetts in CAA action forfirst CAA win of the season and first win over Massachusetts in pro-‐gram history.

• Freshman attack Pat Swanick earned CAA All-‐Rookie Team honorsafter leading the Hawks in points (28) and goals (22) to become thefirst men's lacrosse player in program history to earn CAA postseasonhonors... Swanick was also the league’s Rookie of the Week (3/18).

• Senior attack Kyle Williams concludes his career tied for ninth onSJU’s all-‐time list for career assists (41) and led the team with nine thisseason.

• Four Hawks registered double-‐digit goals on the season: freshmanPat Swanick (22), sophomores Matt Sarcona (14) and MikeDougherty (13), and junior Johnny Simanski (10).

• Sophomore goalkeeper Dustin Keen finished the season ranked inthe nation’s top 40 in goals-‐against average (9.73), save percentage(.530), and saves per game (10).

• Sophomore defender Will Farrell ranked 38th nationally in causedturnovers per game (1.5) and led the Hawks in ground balls (44) andcaused turnovers (24).

• The Hawks took part in the HEADstrong Foundation's first annualRelentless Cup, a fundraising event for the Nicholas E. ColleluoriLymphoma Research Fund.

• With an 8-‐5 win over High Point, SJU started the season 1-‐1 for thefirst time since 2009... With its next win, a 10-‐3 victory over VMI, SJUbegan the season 2-‐1 for the first time since 2000.

• SJU improved its program record to a perfect 12-‐0 against Wagneras the Hawks defeated the Seahawks, 10-‐4.

• The Saint Joseph's University Athletic Department celebrated 20years of lacrosse by honoring the school's first men's varsity team...The members of the 1993 Hawk squad were recognized at halftime ofthe Saint Joseph’s/Delaware game on April 13.

Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an inde-‐pendent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching dis-‐ciplined reasoning, effective communicationand a love of learning. From Willings Alley in OldCity Philadelphia to Stiles Street in NorthPhiladelphia to its current location on CityAvenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to growand change with the times. THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-‐recognized aca-‐demic reputation is confirmed by ongoingacknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News &World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradi-‐tion of intellectual inquiry and personal concernmanifests itself in small, challenging classestaught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistantsdo not teach, so undergraduates can be surethey are receiving the very best educationalexperience from trained experts. One-‐on-‐oneinteraction between students and faculty is areality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum providesacross-‐the-‐board learning for every student.Supporting that curriculum are comprehensiveacademic majors and learning facilities. Theresult is a broad education that prepares stu-‐dents not only for employment and graduateschool, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 mil-‐lion Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses theErivan K. Haub School of Business, the Centerfor Food Marketing and the region's first"Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An87,000-‐square-‐foot international academic cen-‐ter featuring state-‐of-‐the-‐art distance learningtechnology, it is located near the corner of 54thStreet and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s Universityare dedicated to making today’s world evenbetter. A natural spirit of volunteerism hasenabled the University’s community serviceprograms to become the most popularextracurricular activities on campus. In addi-‐tion, a Service Learning program allows stu-‐dents to receive academic credit for their workoutside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and internationalopportunities for student service. From North

Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleansto the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’sstudents embrace the Jesuit mission of servingthose in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dancefor area senior citizens and the Hand-‐in-‐HandFestival for the handicapped are two annualstudent-‐run events that draw thousands of spe-‐cial visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines thebest of dynamic Philadelphia with the subur-‐ban, residential setting of the elegant MainLine. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties,allowing students to literally enjoy the best ofboth worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with itstremendous wealth of historical, cultural, socialand athletic attractions, is easily accessible,while the safety, serenity and greenery of a sub-‐urban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-‐knitcampus ensure that students don’t get lost ineither the literal or the figurative sense at SaintJoseph’s. Expanded library, computer and ath-‐letic facilities add a big-‐time “feel” to this grow-‐ing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s pre-‐pared. The University boasts an excellent recordof placing its graduates in first-‐time jobs, pro-‐fessional schools and other advanced degree

programs. Part-‐time work and internships pro-‐vide real-‐world experiences, the kind whichdelight future employers. And with its manydiverse student organizations, SJU offers ampleopportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-‐campus recruitment pro-‐gram provides graduates with a head start intheir employment search. Regular meetingswith faculty advisors, along with advisory pro-‐grams in the health professions and in pre-‐law,assist students who wish to further their schooling.

PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives studentsaccess to two worlds. The campus resembles apark, surrounded by the stately homes ofPhiladelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yetstudents have access to the cultural, commer-‐cial and recreational activities of downtownPhiladelphia -‐– only a short ride away. SJU stu-‐dents take frequent advantage of the artisticand cultural resources Philadelphia offers, aswell. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art;the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; theFranklin Institute Science Museum; theAcademy of Music, which houses ballet andopera; and the new Kimmel Center, home tothe Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU stu-‐dents enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams inthe four major professional sports leagues.

THE UNIVERSITYTHE HAWK

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for overhalf a century. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-‐06, is best known for staying in constantmotion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "TheHawk Will Never Die."

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, theschool’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissionswere narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriatebecause it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack whichhas made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-‐year history. It has been selected as thenation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s BasketballYearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.
