    SEASON PREVIEWSEASON PREVIEW

2015 SEASON PREVIEWIt will be unchartered water for the Coast

Guard mens lacrosse team this season as they played their fi nal season at the club level and will be elevated to NCAA status and will compete in the New England Women and Mens Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) for the upcoming season.

The Bears fi nal season was the most successful in the schools club lacrosse history as the team went 11-5 overall and 3-1 the Pioneers Collegiate Lacrosse League (PCLL) winning the programs fi rst ever Pioneers Collegiate Lacrosse League Division II championships to earn an automatic bid the Mens Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) national tournament for the second straight year.

Coast Guard looks to replace Eric Schmid and Stuart Carley, who accounted for over 40 percent of the teams goals from last season. Senior midfi elder captain Patrick Dreiss looks to shoulder the load as he is the teams top returning goal scorer with 23 goals and 23 assists.

Also looking to make a signifi cant impact on the off ensive end are junior Justin Huemme, freshman Matt Huemme, and junior Trent Moon. Sophomore Blaise Curtis will also rotate with Moon between midfi eld and off ense. Not only are they promising goal scorers this group will also look to make it diffi cult for opposing defenses to clear the ball out of their own end.

Dreiss and Curtis both have high Lacrosse IQ. They see the fi eld well and move well off the ball. Much of our off ense will run through them, said fi rst year head coach Ray LaForte.

The Bears do have stability in the faceoff circle as senior captain Nick Chicoine is coming off a season where he won 227-316 face off s he took in the PCLL. Chicoine will also look to collect a large number of ground balls and keep possession in the Bears favor.

Joining Chicoine, Dreiss, and Curtis through the midfi eld will be juniors Robert McKenna and Louis DePaolis. Both McKenna and DePaolis are strong, athletic players that will not only be able to hold and distribute the ball on off ense but will also be stingy on the ball defenders.

Junior Kyle Carosotto will be valuable for the Coast Guard midfi eld on the defensive end. Carosotto is another power player who has been solid through early season training and will be a consistent player for the Bears on the fi eld.

Sophomore Quin Hatchcock has also shown great improvement over last season and will look to log valuable minutes for Coast Guard while senior Zach Wells will be an important part of the Bears transition play.

Junior Jeff Bors, sophomore Nicholas Mombello, and junior Mason Totri will see the bulk of the time on the defensive end. Bors, Mombello and Totri all help keep a strong defensive shape and will give up very few easy goals.

Freshman Kurt Caminske along with sophomore Ryan Carpenter will both be competing for playing time this season as both players bring diff erent strengths to the team and have played well during early season training.

I am optimistic for the upcoming season, said LaForte We have a number of strong, athletic players who are excited to get the season underway. We are all counting down the days to our home opener against Norwich on March 21st.

Freshman that could have an immediate impact on the upcoming season is John Stastny as a long pole midfi elder, Alec Groff as a defensive midfi elder, and defensemen John Behnke. Ben Gonski will fi nd time up top playing on the crease and will look to be a goal scoring option off the bench.

The team has come together well and has bought into the being a varsity team, commented LaForte on the upcoming season. Our team motto is bottom up, top down and our team philosophy is a palms down approach meaning no blaming anyone and internalizing all mistake to yourself. We can all get better and I believe we will.

Coast Guard opens their season on the road against arch rival Merchant Marine on February 28th at 1:00pm. The teams fi rst home game will be on March 21st against Norwich at 1:00 pm.

    DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

    TIM FITZPATRICKDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSFOURTH YEAR

Tim Fitzpatrick is in his fourth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGAs athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, fi ve-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academys 23 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatricks guidance, the department produced its fi rst-ever womens professional development seminar (the Womens LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships.

Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the universitys baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAAs Division I Womens Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the departments corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.

While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, mens basketball and womens basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IUs external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.

Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers multi-media partnerships with Learfi eld Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections.

Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous fi ve years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising eff ort that saw Armys A Club donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000

to $1.8 million. He also cultivated the Army Sports Network from two radio stations to 18, including 50,000-watt ESPN 1050 in New York City. During his tenure at West Point, corporate sponsorship revenue jumped from $250,000 to $920,000 annually.

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external aff airs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatricks work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts.

Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the mens basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving.

Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNTs transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue.

He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year mens basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the leagues national and local television syndication eff orts.

Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92.

A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelors degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his masters degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a son, James.
