2010-11 RESULTS BREAKDOWN2011 SEASON REVIEW

The Cowboys faced a transition year in 2011, as they had to play without Oleksandr Nedovyesov – arguably the best tennis player to come through Stillwater – for the first time in four years.

Freshman Maniel Bains stepped in to the No. 1 singles spot where Nedovyesov had dominated while at OSU. Bains pulled off victories against 28th-ranked Ionut Beleleu from Oklahoma and 33rd-ranked Ed Corrie of Texas on his way to finishing the year ranked as the No. 113 singles player.

Junior Eric West tied for the team lead with eight dual singles victories and held the team lead with 13 total singles victo-ries in 2010-11. During dual competition, West competed mostly at the No. 5 spot, where he picked up five victories, but he also won twice at the No. 4 spot and went 1-0 in the No. 2 hole.

Bains and West picked up seven victories as a doubles pair during dual competition, going 6-2 in the No. 2 spot. They

finished the season as the No. 84 doubles pairing.

The Cowboys’ most impressive duo during 2010-11 was ju-nior Aleksey Bessonov and freshman Rifat Biktyakov. The pair picked up a team-high five dual victories, competing mostly at the No. 1 spot. They had an impressive 14-4 fall season, giving them a 19-12 overall record, earning them a No. 31 doubles ranking at the end of the season.

In singles action, Bessonov picked up six of his seven total wins during dual competition, playing mostly in the No. 4 spot. Biktyakov earned six victories during dual competi-tion, splitting time at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. He added four more wins during the fall, including a 6-4, 6-3 triumph against No. 108 Cesare Gallo from Stetson at the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships.

Sophomore Ilija Martinoski finished with eight singles dual victories to tie for the team lead. He competed mostly in the No. 6 slot, where he picked up six of his wins. He led the team with three Big 12 victories.

Vlad Bondarenko added seven singles victories splitting time at the second and third spots for the Cowboys. He went 5-3 at the No. 3 spot and picked up a victory against No. 48 Juan Spir of Georgia Tech at the No. 2 hole in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Freshman Thomas Patiño also competed in dual singles com-petition for the Cowboys, playing in five matches in the No. 6 spot. He and Bondarenko teamed up as doubles partners to win three dual matches, including a team-high two in confer-ence competition at the No. 3 doubles spot.

The Cowboys picked up team victories against Sacramento State, UNLV, Oral Roberts, Abilene Christian and Seminole State to add five more wins to coach James Wadley’s career record, bringing it to 657-320.

OSU rebounded from a tough trip to Athens, Ga., after facing No. 11 Georgia and No. 23 Georgia Tech, by rolling Sacra-mento State 6-1, winning all three doubles matches and five of six singles matches. The Cowboys followed that up with a 4-3 win against UNLV to begin the season 2-3.

OSU’s other victories were 6-1 win against ORU, a 5-2 win against Abilene Christian and a 6-1 victory over Seminole State.

The Cowboys began the year ranked No. 47 and remained ranked through the first two months of the season. Biktyakov was named the No. 5 Freshman/Newcomer to begin the year. Bains ranked as high as No. 72 as a singles player, while the duo of Biktyakov and Bessonov peaked at No. 4 in the Feb. 4 poll.

2011 SEASON REVIEW

4 OKLAHOMA STATE TENNIS

2011 FALL REVIEW; 2012 PREVIEW

A trio of Cowboys came up with some big singles wins during the 2011 fall season, which shows some promise for a relatively young team entering dual competition in 2012.

Senior Vlad Bondarenko led the way with 12 victories, including a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, win against No. 44 Ashley Watling of Tulsa in the second round of the OU Invitational. At the Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Classic, the final event of the fall, he reeled off four-straight victories to make it to the final match, before dropping a tightly contested, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, match to No. 82 Justin Shane of Virginia.

Bondarenko also had a strong showing USTA/ITA Central Region Championships, as he won four straight matches to open the tournament before falling in the semifinal round.

The Cowboys also saw a strong fall performance from sophomore Rifat Biktyakov, who picked up 11 wins. He opened the fall with four wins in four matches at the RazorRacket Invitational, highlighted by a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0(5), come-from-behind victory in the opening match.

Biktyakov won three-straight to begin the OU Invitational to earn a spot in the final

match, before falling to Tsvetan Mihov of the Sooners, 7-6, 7-5.Bondarenko and Biktyakov teamed up in the fall to go 8-3. Two of their three losses came against some of the country’s top competition, falling to the No. 4 and No. 13 tandems.

The duo began the year with five-straight victories, including a 4-0 record at the RazorRacket Invitational.

Freshman Christopher Haworth, a five-star recruit from Putnam City North High School in Oklahoma City, pulled off, perhaps, the biggest upset of the fall season when he downed

top-seeded and 31st-ranked Chris Aumueller of Nebraska in the second round of the OU Invitational, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.

The Cowboys will return senior Eric West, who was a staple in the lineup last year. Also returning are junior Trevor Horstmann and sophomore Brandon Champagne, who did not play during dual competition last season.

Legendary coach James Wadley returns for his 40th year at the helm of the program, bringing in his all-time record of 657-320. Assistant coach Yevgen Bondarchuk returns for his eighth season as Wadley’s assistant.

6 OKLAHOMA STATE TENNIS

James Wadley, the longest tenured head coach in Oklahoma State history, enters the 2012 season as his 40th at the helm of the men’s tennis program.

In his 39 seasons in Stillwater, Wadley has made 17 NCAA appearances and won 12 conference titles. Individually, he has been equally successful with 108 Cowboys earning all-conference honors and nine garnering All-America status.

Wadley has been named the regional coach of the year on 11 occasions and has been honored as the conference coach of the year 13 times. OSU has also had at least two individual conference champions in 28 of his 39 seasons.

Duke Dubois was able to lure Wadley away from a more lucrative position at Duncan High School and gave OSU a bargain to the tune of a $4,500-a-year head coach that would evolve into one of the nation’s winningest coaches. Wadley arrived in Stillwater in 1972 and quickly molded a new structure to the Cowboy tennis program on and off the court. Among his early contributions to the program was the creation of a study hall program, as well as a fall season.

After opening his career with a 16-14 mark in 1972, the Cow-boys reeled off three consecutive 20-win seasons. In addi-tion, the Cowboys earned three-straight Big Eight runner-up finishes, serving as proof a solid foundation had taken hold and the program was turning the corner.

What followed has been termed the “Decade of Dominance” as Wadley elevated the Cowboys into a Big Eight power. Thirteen times he was named the league’s coach of the year while guiding OSU to 12 conference titles.

The 1977 campaign proved to be the breakthrough sea-son for the program as the Cowboys won 18 matches and captured the first of five consecutive conference crowns. In addition, OSU gained the first of its 17 NCAA Championship berths under Wadley.

From 1978-1987, Wadley’s squad rose to another level, post-ing a 65-2 mark against league foes, including a 31-0 mark over the final five years of that stretch.

A 25-5 mark during the 1978 season set a new school stan-dard with a winning percentage of .833. The Cowboys also won their first outright conference title under Wadley. OSU’s 25 victories started a string of 10 consecutive 20-win cam-paigns.

Two years later, Wadley’s squad set a new high-water mark with 27 wins and produced an astounding seven conference champions.

After a Big Eight runner-up finish in 1982, the Cowboys began a new string of conference titles the following year as OSU won 27 times en route to the first of four-straight league crowns.

Wadley’s troops closed out their run of conference titles with titles in 1989, 1990 and 1991. The Cowboys capped each of those seasons with NCAA berths as well.

After joining the Big 12 Conference in 1996, Wadley led the Cowboys to their first NCAA appearance the following season after posting an 18-7 mark.

The Cowboys earned a return trip to the postseason the fol-lowing year after a 17-win campaign.

Wadley coached Pavel Kudrnac to three national titles in 1997-98. Kudrnac won the ITA National Clay Court Champi-onship in 1997 and was named the Farnsworth/ITA Senior Player of the Year that season. He won the Indoor Singles Championship in 1998 and a doubles title with Martin Dvo-racek in 1998. Wadley also coached Fran Krepelka and Matt Prentice to the World Team Tennis National Title in 2001.

After guiding OSU to an NCAA berth in 2001, Wadley was chosen as the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year. Wadley has since won the award in 2003, 2005 and 2007.

Since 2003, Wadley’s squads once again became a mainstay in the postseason, as they made NCAA appearances on seven consecutive occasions.

That string began with an 18-5 mark and a Big 12 runner-up finish in 2003. His squad also jumped from 73rd to 19th in the rankings, the biggest improvement in the country.

Two years later, OSU reached the 20-win plateau for the 14th time under Wadley’s tutelage, amassing a 22-7 mark on its way to a runner-up finish in the conference. That year, the Cowboys also achieved their highest ranking to date, coming in as high as No. 13 nationally.

During the 2006-07 season, the Cowboys cracked the top 10 for the first time ever and climbed as high as No. 8 in the polls.

HEAD COACH JAMES WADLEY

The 2008-09 season saw one of Wadley’s pupils produce the most decorated season by a Cowboy in school history. Oleksandr Nedovyesov was named the 2009 Campbell/ITA National Player of the year after finishing the season as the top-ranked player in the country.

Wadley came to OSU from Duncan High School in 1973 and made an immediate impact. After going 16-14 in his first sea-son, he guided the Cowboys to three straight 20-win seasons before earning a share of his first conference title in 1977. It was the first of five straight Big 8 titles.

Wadley began his playing career in McAlester, Okla., where he was a two-time state champion. He went on to play col-legiately at Southeastern Oklahoma State where he was a two-time All-American at the NAIA level. He helped lead his team to four-straight conference titles and four consecutive appearances in the NAIA Tournament.

Wadley and his wife, Paula, have three children: Stacy, Kristi and Brent. Brent played baseball for OSU one year under Tom Holliday.

Yevgen Bondarchuk is beginning his eighth season as an assistant coach for the Cowboys. He received a degree in economics from Oklahoma State in December 2004.

Yevgen joined the coaching staff after a two-year playing career for the Cowboys. He spent the majority of his time at the top of the lineup, playing Nos. 1 and 2 singles and doubles, and helped guide the team to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.

He finished his college career with a 22-20 singles record and a 22-15 doubles mark, and was ranked as high as No. 55 in the ITA rankings.

Bondarchuk’s career is highlighted by his contribution to the 2003 squad that defeated North Carolina and Minnesota to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16.

Born April 2, 1981, Yevgen is a native of Kiev, Ukraine.

Coach Wadley on Yevgen:“Yevgen has done a great job for me in recruiting. He is really good on the court with the players. He gives the players confidence and seems to say the right things. The players like to have him on the court in the heat of battle. He was a really good college player himself, so he can still hit the ball and compete. His main strength is recruiting. He is arguably one of the best recruiters in the country as an assistant coach. I could not ask for a better assistant coach, and I feel he has done a fantastic job. I hope he stays with us for a long time.”
