our VAluesYour WAn-ifrAEverything we do is because we believe that freedom of expression is a fundamental right and a touchstone for all our freedoms. And press freedom, enhanced by solid independent news publishing companies, is one of its fundamental pillars.

(on the attacks on Charlie Hebdo)

“ Journalists around the world fight every day for the right to report the news

without fear of reprisal. They express ideas others disagree with and pose questions some don’t want asked. Too often they pay the

ultimate price. We join with journalists and all others who support freedom of expression

to declare that such cowardly attempts to thwart free speech and a free press will not

succeed, and that this most recent attack only strengthens our commitment to the ideal that

all people in every nation should be able to express themselves freely and without fear.”

- Cathy Trost, Senior Vice President Exhibits and Programs, Newseum, US

WOrld edItOrs FOrumWAN-IFRA remains committed to editorial integrity, particularly in the age of digital transformation. Through its World Editors Forum, WAN-IFRA provides the leading network for print and digital editors of newspapers and news organisations around the world. Editors continue to connect, inform and share innovation in the newsroom.

The 2014 WEF Trends in Newsrooms report highlighted the extent of state surveillance through Edward Snowden’s leaks, which sparked stellar investigative journalism and unprecedented global collaboration between publications and editors. However, the consequences for the way we practice our craft and communicate with sources present significant challenges. These consequences are explored further in 2015’s Trends in Newsrooms report, which features an essay on the measures that investigative journalists are taking to adapt their practices in response to source protection erosion.

In order to explore and mitigate these challenges, the World Editors Forum was commissioned by UNESCO to conduct a study on the protection of sources in the digital age.

WOrld YOuNG readersTo ensure future generations adopt the importance of a free press and editorial integrity, twelve WAN-IFRA Member Associations were designated “Centers of Youth Engagement Excellence” in 2014. The United States, Denmark, Finland, Norway, The Netherlands, France, Brazil, Germany, Japan, Colombia, Belgium and Korea are leading the way for tomorrow’s audiences and news consumers. Amedia of Norway won the 2014 World Young Reader Prize for a deep, company-wide commitment to meaningful youth engagement.

our VAluesYour WAn-ifrAWe believe that business sustainability is the best guarantee for publishers to remain independent and contribute to freedom of expression in open societies. “ A free and critical press is

crucial to give insight into the decisions of those in power and

thereby to hold them responsible. In the context of development, press

freedom is a prerequisite to encourage democracy and good governance,”

- Mogen Jensen, Danish Minister for Trade and Development Cooperation, 2015

Our press freedom and media development activities have just undergone an independent review, and there is nothing more useful than to see how others see us. Their perspective can help us to refine and improve our work:

“WAN-IFRA projects are professionally and well managed with good project implementation systems in place, including planning, monitoring and financial management.

“WAN-IFRA is flexible in its project design and able to adapt and modify work plans and strategies to changing external conditions.

“WAN-IFRA is innovative in its approach to projects, for example although WAN-IFRA implements many traditional development activities such as training and networking, it does so in a way that makes them different and interesting.”

Those remarks come from an independent assessment conducted in 2014 by the Swedish International Development and Cooperation Agency (SIDA). The partnership included our flagship Women in News and Media Professional Programmes, as well as press freedom advocacy. You can join our media development programmes by being a member of our Brain Trust, in which WAN-IFRA members act as mentors for colleagues in emerging democracies.

We are pleased to report that in 2015 we begin a new partnership to promote a free press and strong independent media with the Danish government.

WOrld PrINters FOrumThere is no doubt that the publishing world is responding forcefully to the immense challenges taking place in the industry. In response to these challenges, 2014 saw the formation of the World Printers Forum, an organisation of newspaper printers and suppliers within WAN-IFRA. The WPF’s objective is to encourage innovation and productivity as well as product development that can be instrumental for publishers to exploit future oriented news media products. It promotes the power of print and the sustainability of print production.

WOrld Press treNdsTo develop innovative news media strategies, you first need data and insight about critical business and technological trends.

That’s why we have been publishing World Press Trends annually since 1989. It is the primary source of data on the newspaper industry, with global, regional and national data on newspaper circulation, reach, advertising revenues, digital trends, demographic information and is an essential tool for news media publishers and businesses.

There is an urgent need to collect standard sets of data from digital media to give a holistic view to World Press Trends. However, collecting data from digital media presented a major challenge for the whole industry, has not been standardised, making comparisons difficult.

As a result, WAN-IFRA consulted our data collaborators – our members - and partnered with those, who are making innovative audience measurement tools. We are following closely the evolution of audience metrics in the digital media space and look forward to sharing this with our members. This new approach will assist WAN-IFRA members in the long term, ensuring relevant data is available to you at your finger tips.

our VAluesYour WAn-ifrAWe are committed to curiosity, open innovation and networking, sharing professional knowledge inside and outside the organisation. We champion diversity and promote integrity in all we do. “ The Global Alliance for Media Innovation is

a WAN-IFRA initiative to create a dynamic network that encourages innovation in the

Page 17: 2014 WAN-IFRA Activity report (7 values)

WAN-IFRA’s Global Alliance for Media Innovation (GAMI) facilitates and accelerates the digital transition of news media by bringing together research centres and innovation labs with news media publishers and suppliers.

For the first time, news media start-ups and research centres from around the world are united in a combined effort to explore and foster the growth potential of research and development in news content creation, delivery and consumption.

The programme of the Alliance is guided by a multi-stakeholder Advisory Board composed of 10 professionals representing business companies (media and suppliers) and academia from different regions in the world. As an executive body, the Board drives the strategic operations and sets the agenda of the Global Alliance for Media and Innovation.

As part of the mission to bring together innovation centres from different sectors, we set the foundation for an international market place for publishers to connect with start-ups and experts in innovation. The Media Innovation Map, a hive for start-ups, was shared in June at a meeting during WAN-IFRA’s Torino Congress. In October 2014, it moved to the beta phase of testing.

in tribute to chArlieThis article by Press Freedom Director, Andrew Heslop, was cross-published in leading newspapers around Europe and worldwide in support of Charlie Hebdo, and to highlight the issue of attacks against journalists as a major threat to global press freedom.

20

Page 21: 2014 WAN-IFRA Activity report (7 values)

They are alarming statistics. 61 dead. 70 dead. 74 dead. 47 dead. 44 dead. 74 dead. These figures represent the number of journalists who have

died each year from 2009 through 2014. More than 1,100 have been killed in the line of duty since 1992 – and these are some of the most conservative estimates.

Charlie Hebdo and France are mourning the murder of 10 journalists and two police officers as the new year begins. There will, sadly and with certainty, be more as the year unfolds. When journalists are murdered, it is our entire society that should feel the wound. Is this recent attack the one that will finally wake everyone up to the fact that an attack on a journalist is an attack on us all?

Shocking as it is, the fatal attack on the newsroom of Paris’ leading satirical news weekly is not an isolated incident, but rather an extreme example of the brutal, often violent reality for thousands of news professionals worldwide.

Speak to newsmen and women in Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, Mexico, and countless other countries, and the shock and fear that has stunned France is all too familiar. That this attack happened in a country that, while struggling with its multicultural identity, is nonetheless committed to believing in difference and diversity – liberté, egalité, fraternité – is a tragic blow for those determined to celebrate these values.

What is exceptional in this instance is that the climate of hatred that fuels attacks on journalists worldwide has reached the heart of European newsrooms.

As we grieve, and as the reasons unfold and the story develops, I hope it will deeply register in the minds of ordinary Europeans just how precarious our freedoms have become; that anyone, anywhere, should be killed for exercising their right to freedom of expression is a travesty. Whether it is Paris, Sana’a or Baghdad, there is no exception.

Only in solidarity can we hope to withstand assaults like this. But the reality – based on the lack of reaction to countless other tragic slayings of journalists over the years – is that until it happens in your own back yard, it often goes unregistered as being a threat.

Wednesday’s attack strikes at the fabric of democracy, and aspiring democratic societies, the world over. An attack on a publication such as Charlie Hebdo – unafraid, imperturbable, unwavering in its acerbic political satire and penetrating social commentary – is intended as an attack on the values our societies uphold. That we are no more damning to others as we are to ourselves is a philosophy that has kept Europe at peace since the second world war and in some ways has become the ultimate measure of our progress. Learning to respect difference yet providing no exception to the rule that “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend

21

Page 22: 2014 WAN-IFRA Activity report (7 values)

to the death your right to say it”. Perhaps never has a phrase held such poignancy.

This attack also looks to rip open the continent along fault lines that are wearing increasingly thin. Any fundamentalist thinking – right wing, left wing, economic, cultural or religious – will seek to exploit the perceived fragmentation of Europe and drive its people back into the cauldron of bitterness, hatred and sectarianism that pockmarks our history.

Europe survives precisely because of its diversity, its differences. Any dogma – religious, economic, political or otherwise – that seeks to impose a single vision on European society, especially through violent means, is destined to be rejected.

And where this belief wavers, where attacks aim to wear thin the resolve, the press has a responsibility to remind Europeans of their past and to project a potential future according to the values that so many fought and died for prior to the birth of the modern

continent.Attacks such as Wednesday’s aim to exploit the fears that difference in religion and culture bring. We must not let this be the case. We should be careful not to react with calls for tighter legislation that can be harmful to the very freedoms a critical press is designed to protect. The lessons of our American cousins and the post 9-11 Patriot Act as a response to terror should remind us that threats to our freedoms can come from many directions. Let us take the time to react, but let us first take the time to mourn this latest attempt on our freedom.

We can neither predict nor prevent the actions of crazed fundamentalists, but we can entirely control our reaction to their devastating acts. In the face of this most recent tragedy we must reject the fear it was calculated to spread. The victims were martyred, not in the name of a prophet, a cause, or a twisted religious belief, but by a warped vision of our own world. We have a duty to those who died to resist that vision. They lived in the name of freedom, and died its truest practitioners.
