The MIaaCentral Oklahoma is in its third year as a mem-

ber of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, perhaps the premier conference in NCAA Division II.

The MIAA is made up of a 14 institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma and was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Inter-collegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100-plus years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team cham-pionships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently con-ducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for ti-tles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athlet-ic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri and Northwest Mis-souri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central

Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commis-sioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph Mc-Fillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded Mc-Fillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebraska-Ke-arney and Lindenwood.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same in 2013, which left 14 schools in the MIAA.

sCHOOl niCknaMe“Bronchos” was the nickname selected

for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. It was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nick-name for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization. abOUt tHe COVer

edGar MirakU

Edgar Miraku is in his third year at the Central Okla-homa helm, returning to the school where he served as an assistant coach and earned two degrees before embarking on a sensational high school career.

Miraku is 37-28 in two years with the Bronchos, going 13-18 in 2012 when UCO started competing in the rug-ged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association -- arguably the best volleyball league in NCAA Division II -- and improving to 24-10 last season.

The Bronchos finished fourth in the league and won a first-round match in the MIAA Post-season Tournament

last year in putting together UCO’s best season since 2007.Edgar came to Central after a wildly succesfuly seven-year stint at Edmond Memo-

rial, guiding the Bulldogs to a 209-48 record and four Class 6A state championships.Miraku led EMHS to the first of those state titles in his initial year, with the

Bulldogs going 41-16 in capturing the 2005 crown. A 24-9 season that included a state semifinal appearance followed and Memorial won another championship in 2007 to cap a 31-4 year.

The Bulldogs went 27-3 and made it to the state quarterfinals in 2008 before win-ning back-to-back titles in 2009 and ‘10, going a combined 62-8 those two years. Memorial finished 25-9 and made it to the state tournament semifinals in 2011.

Miraku played professionally in his native Albania for four years and was a member of the Albanian Junior National Team from 1992-95.

Edgar came to the United States in 1995 and immediately joined the UCO program. He served as a student assistant, graduate assistant and volunteer assistant for five years while earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, with the Bronchos going127-75 during that span.

Miraku has coached several club teams during his career, including a lengthy stint with the Oklahoma Peak Performance (OP2) junior club team. He led OP2 to a 58-18 record and fifth-place national finish in 2002-03, with the 2009 team finishing third in the nation.

Miraku has also been involved for many years with the U.S. Men’s Sitting National Team and served as head coach for two years. He guided the team to the 2010 World Championships, the 2010 World Cup and the 2011 Continental Cup.

Edgar is married (Amy) and has two children (Abiana and Arden).

coaching staff at Arkansas Tech. She helped the Golden Suns go 87-26, win two conference championships and make two NCAA Division II national tournament appearances in that span.

A native of White Lake, Mich., Dukic was a four-year standout as a setter at ATU.

She was a two-time All-Conference performer and racked up 2,693 career assists while helping the Golden Suns compile a 108-36 record and capture two league titles.

riGHt-side HitterThe Bronchos moved senior Sabetha Young

from the left to right side and she should give the team even more firepower.

Talented freshman Erika Warren will vie for playing time and senior Joanna Huckabee is also available.

Coach Miraku Says: “We shifted Sabetha and she’s more consistent here and provides leadership. We’re excited to have Erika here and Joanna can play a supportive role.”

Middle blOCkerUCO features a dynamic duo at this posi-

tion in senior Juliette Smith and sophomore Allison Barr, who can both dominate at the net

with their blocking and attacking prowess. They com-

bined for 565 kills and 183 blocks last season.Senior Jonna Huckabee is a returning

letterwinner who will help out.Coach Miraku Says: “We have

everybody back that we had last year. Hopefully we can continue to be very

strong with our blocking and defense in the middle. The key is getting the ball to them.”

liberO/deFensiVe sPeCialistA four-year starter is gone, so several players

will contend for playing time.Senior Carissa Ophus is a three-year let-

terwinner and the most experienced returning player, while sophomore Mikayla Bangasser saw extensive action last year.

Junior transfer Whitney Gifford and fresh-man Megan Thomas will push for action, with sophomore Bonnie Vernon also available.

Coach Miraku Says: “We have a lot of players here and probably all of them will play. We’re trying to deepen the position and it’s crucial to us.”

setterSophomore Katy Davis showed what she

could do in a part-time starting role last year and will take over here. She knows how to distribute the ball and will just keep improving.

Freshman Shelby Mench provides depth.Coach Miraku Says: “Katy will step in and

do a good job. She’s very strong fundamentally and is a team player with a positive attitude.”

A bevy of returning players has Central Okla-homa excited about its chances of competing with the top teams in the rugged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2014.

The Bronchos return 10 players -- all of whom started at least two matches -- from last year’s 24-10 team that tied for fourth in the best conference in NCAA Division II.

It was UCO’s most wins since 2007 and the presence of so many proven veterans has third-year head coach Edgar Miraku looking forward to the upcoming season.

“We have a lot of players back who contrib-uted last year and that’s a big plus,” said Miraku, who is 37-28 with the Bronchos. “We can be a lot better, but we have to be to keep up with the other top teams in the conference.”

Leading UCO’s large contingent of returners is senior Juliette Smith, junior Barbara Jackson and sophomore Allison Barr, three of the best players in the league.

“We need to make headway with our de-fense and serve receiving because those are two big keys for us,” Miraku said. “We lost a few play-ers and need for some people to step up, but I like this team and what it can accomplish.”

A position-by-position look at UCO:

OUtside HitterBarbara Jackson was a second-team All-

MIAA pick last year after racking up 412 kills and 290 digs, with even more expected of the junior standout this season.

Jackson headlines a talented group that in-cludes two returning letterwinners in sophomore Mallory Fox and Bonnie Vernon, with redshirt freshman Ava Zimmerman also looking to contribute.

Gifted rookie Madison King should make an immediate impact as well.

Coach Miraku Says: “Barbara has grown the last two years and has carried the team in delicate situations before. Mallory stepped in late last season and was very reliable and Bonnie is coming off a good spring. We’re very excited about Madison, she’s a very dynamic hitter.”

A record-setting winning streak to open the season sparked Central Oklaho-ma to its best season in six years in 2013.

UCO won its first 10 matches -- six in three-set sweeps -- and went on to finish 24-10 for its most wins since 2007.

The Bronchos tied for fourth in the rugged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and won their first round match in the MIAA Post-season Tournament before falling to eventual champion Central Missouri.

“We got off to a great start and had a really good season,” head coach Edgar Miraku said. “The girls worked hard all year and we made a lot of progress.”

UCO got off to an im-pressive start, winning four straight three-set sweeps in the Henderson State Classic, and followed with four wins in the Tiger/Savage Storm Classic.

The Bronchos made their home and conference debut on Sept. 17 with a sweep of Pittsburg State and moved to

MIAA foe Missouri Western behind 37 combined kills from Barbara Jackson and Allison Barr.

Two five-set league losses followed, but the Bronchos came back with a trio of three-set sweeps before los-ing two of their next three outings to fall to 20-9 on the season and 8-7 in the league.

UCO ended the regular season with three straight wins and then rolled over Emporia State in three sets to open the MIAA Post-season Tournament.

The season ended three days later with a loss to Central Missouri.

HaMiltOn Field HOUseCentral Oklahoma plays its home volleyball matches in Hamilton Field House, which

opened its doors in 1965.The Bronchos have an impressive 220-85 record (.721 winning percentage) at Hamilton

Field House, including a 115-36 mark (.762) over the past 13 seasons.Hamilton Field House was re-named from Broncho Field House on May 1, 1993 in honor

of longtime coach and athletic director Dale Hamilton, who helped design the building in the 1960s.

The 3,000-seat facil-ity underwent renovation in the summer of 2001 with the installation of individual chairback seats on the floor and LED boards capable of showing live statistics were added four years ago.

Hamilton Field House also serves as the home for UCO’s wrestling team in addition to the men’s and women’s basketball squads.

Numerous other events, including the university’s graduation ceremonies, are also held in the building.
