Missy Soboleski4th YearGannon 93

M issy Soboleski was hired as head volleyballcoach at Edinboro University on February 3, 2005.Soboleski replaced Dale Flickinger, who was hired onan interim basis in late July to replace Lynn Theehs, who went to the University of Maine.

After a slow start, Soboleski returned theFighting Scots to the ranks of the elite in the AtlanticRegion in her first season. Edinboro finished its firstyear under Soboleski s tutelage with a 26 16 ledger, and was selected for the NCAA Division II Playoffs.

The 26 wins were particularly impressive sincethe Fighting Scots were struggling at 7 12 entering thefinal weekend in September. They would go on towin 17 of their final 19 regular season matches toqualify for the PSAC Tournament with a third placefinish in the Western Division.

With a four game winover Millersville in the quarterfinals, Edinboro reachedthe semifinals before fallingin three games to LockHaven. The same fate heldtrue in the AtlanticRegional, as the FightingScots defeated Mount Olivein three games in the quarterfinals, but then lost inthree games to Lees McRaein the semifinals.

The Fighting Scotsweren t as fortunate in the2006 campaign, as a youngsquad lost five of its last sixmatches to finish at 19 17.Two of those losses came in

five games. This past year saw the Fighting Scots finish with a

28 11 record, the most wins since the 1998 editionalso won 28 matches. Edinboro enjoyed a successfulplayoff run, reaching the PSAC Tournament semifinals, then falling in the finals of the Atlantic RegionalChampionship.

Soboleski is well known in local volleyball circles. She has previously coached at two local institutions,Mercyhurst and Gannon. She took over the Edinboroprogram after serving as the head coach atMercyhurst from 1999 2004.

At Mercyhurst, she inherited a volleyball programthat had not had a winning season since 1993, hadwon only five games in four years in the Great LakesIntercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), and hadrecorded just 26 wins in five previous seasons. Sheproceeded to lead the Lady Lakers to three winningseasons in six years at the helm, including a 21 8 finishin 2002, winning the Southern Division championship. The 2001 team went 19 16, and her 2003 team was 1615.

Prior to taking over at Mercyhurst, Soboleskispent four seasons as the head coach at her almamater, Gannon, where she was previously a standoutplayer. Her 1995 98 Lady Knight editions reached theGLIAC Playoffs twice, including a 21 14 record in herfirst season, with Gannon reaching the NCAA DivisionII Playoffs. Soboleski's final team was 18 16 and qualified for the GLIAC Playoffs. She was an assistantcoach under Gerry (Burbules) Vensel, a member ofthe Edinboro Athletic Hall of Fame, in 1994.

"It has always been our intention to keepEdinboro University volleyball in the forefront of thePSAC and the region," related Director of AthleticsBruce Baumgartner. "We think coach Soboleski haswhat it takes to continue Edinboro University's winning tradition. We feel our program is in very goodhands. Missy brings a great deal of energy and experience to our program, and she is very familiar withwhat Edinboro volleyball represents. We also like thefact that she enjoyed an excellent graduation rate atMercyhurst.

W ith seven veterans returning, including five players who sawconsiderable action a year ago, the Edinboro University volleyball teamhas a solid foundation. But it will likely be the impact of no fewer thaneight newcomers that will ultimately signal how good the 2008 FightingScots will be.

We always look to win the conference, pointed out fourth yearhead coach Missy Soboleski. A year ago, Edinboro fell just short, reaching the semifinals before suffering a four game loss to California(Pa.).That loss halted a solid postseason run that saw the Fighting Scots reachthe semifinals of the PSAC Playoffs before advancing to the finals of theAtlantic Regional. That left Edinboro with a final record of 28 11 and twoNCAA Playoff appearances in Soboleski s first three seasons. It also represented the most wins since the 1998 team posted 28 wins.

The Fighting Scots must replace three key members of last year ssquad Jenna Benkelman, Breanna Smith, and All American JennaNewman. All will be difficult to replace, but filling Newman s shoes willbe particularly hard. She departed with 1,899 kills, ranking second alltime at Edinboro.

You never really replace anyone, related Soboleski. The teamchemistry changes every year with what you lose and add to your roster. Newman, Jenna and Bre were aggressive, confident players whowill be tough to replace.

Throw in such a large number of newcomers and building teamchemistry will no doubt hold the key to a return to postseason action. With this number of incoming freshmen, we must try to create and

generate team chemistry, stressed Soboleski. If we compete hardand to the best ofour ability, we ll besuccessfull.

We ve addedsome athleticismand some height, she continued.I m excited to getthem on the courtand see how theyall fit together. Ihave some ideas, but really we haveto get them here.

That s wherethe list of returning veteranscomes into play. For starters, there s OliviaWilliams andBrittanySlauterbeck, whofigure to start atmiddle hitter.Williams earnedAll Atlantic Regionhonors a year agoafter being namedthe 2006 PSACWest Rookie ofthe Year.

Then there sKatie Wilkins, who

made it two straight Rookie of the Year honorees for Edinboro after setting a school record for assists as a freshman. She was also the lonefreshman to earn All Region honors.

Throw in Sam Kuehner and Maureen Tilert and the Fighting Scotshave a solid foundation to build upon. Like Wilkins, Tilert was anotherfreshman who played a huge role in 2007.

Edinboro opens the 2008 campaign with two tournaments beforebeginning league play on September 9 against Indiana(Pa.). TheFighting Scots get underway in the Shepherd Ram Rumble on Friday,August 29 and Saturday, August 30. The following weekend they willcompete in the University of Sciences Devils Classic.

Following theleague opener againstIUP, Edinboro figures toreceive its sternest testof the season while participating in the CentralMissouri Challenge. TheFighting Scots playEmporia State (27 9 in2007) the first day, thensquare off againstPittsburg State (28 9)and the host Jennies onthe second day. CentralMissouri was 31 7 a year ago. All three teams were participants in theSouth Central Regional.

The Central Missouri Tournament will really test us, admittedSoboleski. That s why we re going. We want to get a good test beforeconference play.

The PSAC West has a new look in 2008. The addition of Gannonand Mercyhurst to the Western Division shifts Lock Haven, a long timepower in the PSAC, into the Eastern Division. The Fighting Scots will stillhave to contend with California(Pa.), the PSAC champion who was 35 4and reached the Elite Eight, and a Clarion squad which was 28 6 lastyear.

Middle HittersThe Fighting Scots will have their hands full trying to replace All

American Jenna Newman, who departed with the second most kills inschool history.

That being said, Soboleski knows that Edinboro has a pair of experienced middle hitters in juniors Brittany Slauterbeck (5 9 ) and OliviaWilliams (5 9 ). They both bring a different flavor to the position.Brittany is our best blocker and our most explosive hitter, notedSoboleski. Olivia is so quick and athletic. She s a versatile player. I dput her up against anybody in the PSAC.

Slauterbeck was third in the Scots in kills with 351 and ranked second in total blocks with 90. Williams, meanwhile, was second in kills(430) and third in total blocks (88). She earned honorable mentionAVCA All Atlantic Region honors after being named the PSAC WestRookie of the Year as a freshman.

Junior Chrissy Steger (5 9 ) saw limited action a year ago, finishingwith 14 kills and 10 service aces in 18 games. Chrissy has made stridesand is a versatile player who could see time at middle hitter or opposite, commented Soboleski.

Slauterbeck could also see time at opposite if Gina Boothe is readyto step in immediately. A 6 1 freshman from Anderson High School inCincinnati, Ohio, Boothe was a four year starter who was the FAVCPlayer of the Year as a senior in addition to earning first team all league

honors her final three years.Gina plays high above the net, boasted Soboleski. We think she

will contribute right away at middle hitter or outside hitter. She moveswell and is very well trained.

Outside HittersSoboleski figures to see a lot of competition at the outside hitter/

opposite positions. For starters, Samantha Kuehner saw considerableaction as a sophomore, appearing in 137 games as an outside hitter/defensive specialist. The 5 9 junior finished with 261 digs, third on theteam, and 44 service aces.

Sam s a two year starter who is a very focused and determinedplayer, noted Soboleski.

Danielle Martzolf is the other returnee. A 5 9 sophomore, she is astrong athlete who will compete for the O1 position. She saw limitedaction in 2007, appearing in 28 games with 20 kills and 16 digs.

The recruiting class could make a huge impact. Freshman EllieLininger is considered on the leaders to play right away. The 5 11 outside hitter played at Fox Chapel (Pa.) High School. Noelle is an aggressive player who is very athletic and a big blocker, related Soboleski. She will be a force at the net.

Angela Groshner, a 5 8 freshman from nearby Maplewood (Pa.)High School, will compete for the O2 position, and could also be tried atlibero. She helped lead the Tigers to the 2005 PIAA state championship, along with a runner up finish last year. She set school records for killsand service aces. Soboleski notes that Groshner possesses phenomenalball control. She reads very well and moves well, Soboleski commented. She has great ball control.

Another contender for immediate playing time is Bree McMahon,a transfer from Alfred State College. A 5 9 junior, McMahon was twiceAVCA NJCAA Region III Player of the Year. She was accorded AllAmerican honors in 2007 and honorable mention All American accolades as a freshman.

Bree comes from a great high school program in Sweet Home, noted Soboleski. She s a tenacious player who is more of a defensivespecialist but can swing.

Freshman Justine Carrowwill also compete for playing time as anopposite. Carrow is tall and thin at 6 1 , and is considered a big blocker. She played at Seneca Valley (Pa.) High School, and was a first team AllSection and second team All WPIAL selection as a senior. She helpedlead the Raiders to the Section 3 AAA championship.

Ami Killingerwill redshirt this season, and eventually vie for playingtime at outside hitter or in the middle. She is a 5 10 freshman andplayed her high school volleyball at Exeter Township (Pa.) High School, where she earned All Berks County honors.

Setters/LiberosA year ago Katie Wilkins came in as a true freshman and quickly

took over as the starting setter. A position that traditionally has hadoutstanding performers in the past, Wilkins has a chance to rank upthere with the best of the Edinboro setters.

The 5 8 sophomore finished with a school record 1,769 assists, ranking second in the PSAC in assists per game and 25th nationally. Shewas also second on the team in service aces (60) and fourth in digs(246). Wilkins was named the PSAC West Rookie of the Year and wasalso a first team AVCA All Atlantic Region selection.

Katie did a tremendous job running our offense as a freshman, stressed Soboleski. She s extremely competitive and has a great workethic.

A concern a year ago prior to the season, the Fighting Scots nowpossess a pair of excellent setters with the addition of Megan Osysko. The 5 7 freshman from Independence(Oh.) High School could wellafford the Fighting Scots the luxury of running a 6 2 set. Osysko wasthe District 2 Division III MVP and was also named the MVP of theChagrin Valley Conference as a senior.

We re looking to see what Megan can do, related Soboleski. We know she is a very solid setter who can set as well as provide us

depth on defense.Maureen Tilertmight only be 5 3 , but she proved a large pres

ence as a freshman last season. She started at libero and finished with538 digs, the fifth highest season total. That figure was also good forseventh in the PSAC in digs per game. Tilert also had 45 service aces.

Mo is a ball of fire, Soboleski pointed out. She provides us witha great deal of energy.

Tilert could well be pushed by Groshner, who provides the FightingScots with another player who excels in controlling the ball.

Taryn Jeffers is yet another freshmen on the Edinboro roster. Sheis 5 6 and will look for time as a defensive specialist. Jeffers hails fromWooster (Oh.) High School, helping the Generals to two Ohio Final Fourappearances. She was a second team All OCC choice.

 PSAC OverviewThe Pennsylvania State Athletic

Conference, with 57 years of organized competition, has evolved into one of the NCAA slargest and most heralded intercollegiate athletic conferences.

The 2008 09 academic year will be a groundbreaking one for the PSAC, as the league willexpand beyond its original 14 members for thefirst time since its official formation in 1951. Newfull time members Gannon University andMercyhurst College, along with associate memberLong Island University C.W. Post, expect to complement the PSAC s already solid foundation.

With 16 full time institutions, the PSACshares distinction with the West VirginiaIntercollegiate Athletic Conference as the NCAADivision II s largest in terms of membership.League expansion has brought acclaim throughpostseason opportunities, as well. In 2008 09, theConference will sponsor 23 championships, themost for leagues in Division II.

Highly competitive on a regional andnational level, PSAC schools annually combineto send nearly one third of its teams into NCAApostseason play. Ultimately, the membership ssuccess has yielded 40 NCAA team and 218 individual title winners.

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one ofDivision II s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, well over a quarter of the PSAC sestimated 5,300 participants are honored eachyear as Scholar Athletes for maintaining agrade point average of 3.25 or better a totalthat has nearly doubled since PSAC ScholarAthletes were first recognized in the mid 1990s.

The PSAC was organized in 1951 for the purpose of promoting and administering men s athletic programs within the 14 state teachers colleges in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In1977, due to the interest and growth of women sathletics, the conference was restructured to provide for women s programs.

Upon its formation, the league did nothave a standard competitive division. However, in 1980, the league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II.Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight schools also competeat the Division I level in select sports. PSACschools enroll over 117,000 students and claimover 661,000 alumni, including 430,000 whoreside in Pennsylvania.

The PSAC is governed by the presidentsof the 16 member institutions. It employs acommissioner, two assistant commissionersand a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
