school nickname

“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

school colors

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors early in the fall of 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma.

Todd Steidley, a former national champion for Central Oklahoma who went on to win seven state titles as a high school coach in the state, was tabbed to take over as the Bronchos’ head wrestling coach on May 17, 2016.

“It’s my dream job,” said Steidley, currently prin-cipal at Claremore High School. “It’s the only job I would have left Claremore

for. Edmond is a wonderful place to live, UCO is a great institution and we’re excited about coming back to take over the reigns of the wrestling program.”

Steidley replaces legendary head coach David James, who led the Bronchos to 12 national champi-onships and 396 dual wins during a 34-year career.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the influ-ence of David James,” Steidley said. “He had a huge impact on me when I went to school at UCO and a lot of the things I’ve done in coaching I do because of him. I want to continue his legacy.

“I guess it’s a new era and I’m excited about it. I feel

UCO is the best Division II program in the country and we want to fight for national championships and continue to mold young men into productive citi-zens.”

A prep standout at Tulsa Union High School, Steidley was a Division I qualifier at Utah State before spending his last two seasons at UCO. He went 64-11-2 with the Bronchos from 1986-88, winning the 142-pound national title as a junior and finishing runner-up as a senior.

Steidley spent two years as a graduate assistant coach at UCO, helping the Bronchos capture the NAIA team title in 1989 before finishing second in the school’s first year in NCAA Division II in 1990.

He served as assistant coach at Clemson in 1990-91 before going to Enid High School as head coach for one year. Steidley led Bristow High School to three Class 3A state championships during a six-year career there and then guided Ponca City High School to four consecutive Class 6A titles from 1998-06.

Steidley, who finished with a phenomenal 211-18 career dual record, has been principal at Claremore High School since 2006.

Todd and his wife, Kelli, have two children – Erin Delk and Garrett -- and one grandson (Loudin).

In his fourth year as Central Oklahoma’s full-time assistant coach is Kyle Evans, one of the most decorated wrestlers in the school’s illustrious history.

Evans joined the staff in the fall of 2013 and helped lead the team to a 14-4 dual record and fifth-place national finish in 2013-14 as UCO crowned one individual national champion and had two runners-up. The Bronchos had another individu-al national champion the following season and then helped the team to a 12-5 dual record last year with wins over a pair of top-10 teams, including No. 1 Maryville.

Kyle spent his entire career at 141 pounds and was a four-time All-American and two-time national champion for the Bronchos. He finished with a 125-20 record that ranks fourth on the school’s all-time list for winning percentage (.862) and 10th for wins.

Evans redshirted his first year and then beat out a returning All-American in earning the starting berth at 141 in 2004-05, winning the regional title and finish-ing sixth nationally en route to a 24-13 record. He came back the next season to

go 30-5, winning 22 of his last 24 matches to capture a second straight regional crown before finishing as the national runner-up.

Evans was virtually unbeatable his final two seasons, going a combined 71-2 in winning back-to-back na-tional championships.

He became the first UCO wrestler to complete a full season undefeated as a junior in 2006-07 with a perfect 39-0 record that included 18 bonus-point wins and was named Midwest Regional Wrestler of the Year before sweeping four matches in winning the national title. Kyle repeated as both Midwest Regional Wrestler of the Year and national champion during a dominating senior season that saw him finish 32-2 with 18 bonus-point wins.

Evans became just the second UCO wrestler to win four regional titles and he had a 43-match winning streak that ranks as the fourth-longest in school history. He earned 53 bonus-point wins during his career with a school-record 25 technical falls.

A state champion as a senior at Edmond North High School, Kyle earned his general studies degree in busi-ness from Central in 2008 and worked in the medical sales field before returning to UCO.

Sam Hazewinkel joins first-year head coach Todd Steidley and assistant coach Kyle Evans on the 2016-17 wrestling staff.

Hazewinkel, of the same family inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, brings one of the better resumes and pedigrees in all of wrestling to UCO. National champion, All-American, Olympian, Hazewinkel has done it all.

Hazewinkel went 140-0 in high school at Pensacola Christian Academy and was a three-time state champion. From there, he went to the University of Oklahoma and was a four-time All-American and a four-time Academic All-American.

Also a four-time U.S. Open Champion, twice in Freestyle and twice in Greco, Haze-winkel was a 2008 University World Champion in Greco. The same year, he served as alternate for the Olympics and in 2012 was also an Olympian in both Freestyle and Greco.

After competing in the Olympics, Hazewinkel joined his father and uncle as Olym-pians. Sam and his father, Dave, are the only father-son Olympians in American wrestling history.

Sam is married (Rachel) and has one son (Josh).

season outlook

The 2016-17 season for Central Oklahoma is cer-tain to be remembered as Todd Steidley takes over the program that for the past 34 seasons has been led by David James.

James led the Bronchos to 12 of their 15 team national championships and coached 48 individu-al national champions.

Steidley was one of those.

The Bronchos won a team title in 1987. Steid-ley won the 141-pound title that year as a junior.

Now he is tasked with leading one of the best programs in the country back to glory.

“This is a dream job,” Steidley said. “I couldn’t be happier to have this opportunity. I loved this place when I wrestled here, I’ve always loved this place. It really is a dream come true to come back here and get the chance to coach here.”

Steidley’s first assign-ment was keeping assis-tant coach Kyle Evans on staff. Evans is a four-time All-American and two-time national champion UCO alum, who put together an incredible recruiting class that USA Wrestling Magazine ranked as No. 4 in the country.

Steidley then added a second assistant coach in

Sam Hazewinkel, a four-time All-American him-self, and an Olympian.

“Kyle deserves so much credit for what he does,” Steidley says. “He made the transition seamless, and he did more work than anyone this sum-mer.”

On Hazewinkel.“Sam brings so much

energy to the wrestling room,” Steidley said. “He has been a great addition for us. I’m learning from

Kyle and Sam everyday myself.”

The Bronchos return 29 wrestlers from last year, and added almost 20 new guys too. Here is a weight-by-weight look at the 2016-17 UCO Bronchos.

125: UCO has five wrestlers at 125-pounds and Zac D’Amico leads the charge. The junior went 20-14 last sea-son. Joshua Lindsey, a freshman from Moore,

Okla., will make a push for immediate mat time. And Tim Null will look for some action as well after redshirting last year. Noah McQuigg and Gar-rett Rowe are two young talents that will redshirt.

133: 133 is a very com-petitive weight for the Bronchos. Senior Aaron Hane should get the most matches. Junior Josh Breece is vying for time as is sophomore Blake Dauphin and redshirt

Aaron Hane is one of four returners at 133 pounds for the Bronchos. [UCO Photo Services]

season outlook

freshman Rio Zamora.141: Joshua Ailey

returns for his senior season ranked No. 7 in the country at 141. The national qualifier from a year ago looks to improve on his 26-11 mark from a year ago. Tyler Tustin will get some action at 141 pounds, and Cy Trindle will redshirt this season. Both provide what Steid-ley called tremendous work ethic in the wres-tling room, making each of the 141-pound wres-tlers better with time.

149: The deepest weight for Central Okla-homa is 149 pounds. Will Steltzlen and Briar Stopp will take the mat while Shamar Young redshirts. Tanner Bailey, Timothy O’Connor and Michael Williams are also there providing depth at 149.

157: Bryan Dutton leads the group. The junior only wrestled in the OCU Open last year, but along with Cody Ryan, who went 11-7 last year wrestling in three open tournaments, 157 can be a strong point for the Bronchos. Three freshman, Paden Bailey, Jerrod McKinstry, and Justin Walker make 157 a young class, but it’s a very talented class too.

165: Senior Danny Carillo went 31-11 last season and is back for

one more run with the Bronchos. Sophomores Mason Thompson, who went 29-15 at 174 last year, and Dakota Head add a little bit of depth to the class. Justin Walker also works with 165 some too.

174: Another young but talented group for the Bronchos. Ryan Ander-son and Gage Stallworth, both sophomores, look to see more action in their second year. And redshirt freshman Miguel Bar-reras is looking to take

what he learned last year and put it to work full time this season.

184: 184, like 149, is deep. The Bronchos have six wrestlers at 184. John Finn and Caleb Hawes are looking to lead the group. While Walker Smith, Johnathan Bowen and Brock Warren, as well as transfer Joel Dix-on, add depth to a crucial weight class for Steidley.

197: Greg Wilson and Thomas Shepherd are holding it down at 197. Though there isn’t as

much depth here for the Bronchos, Wilson looks to transition to a full time contributor.

Hvy: Kyle Factor is UCO’s second nationally ranked wrestler, No. 10 in the country. He returns for his junior season after piling up 41 wins over the past two seasons. Caleb Cotter and Evan McGee will also contrib-ute. McGee saw limited action last season going 9-7. Cotter wrestled at both 197 and heavy-weight, and went 8-2.

Senior Danny Carrillo returns at 165 pounds for UCO. [UCO Photo Services]

2015-16 season revieW

The 2015-16 wres-tling season was a strange one at

Central Oklahoma.The Bronchos went

12-5 in duals. Mason Thompson won the Oklahoma City Open at 174 pounds and Jero-my Davenport won the Fort Hays State Open at 157 pounds. Josh Ailey and Spencer Rutherford both won the Newmon Invitational at 141 and 149 pounds respectively. Then, Davenport and Kyle Factor (285) won the MIAA Tournament.

But then came the West Regionals.

UCO finished sixth in Golden, Colo. and had three - Ailey, Rutherford and Factor - qualify for the NCAA champion-ships.

There, the Bronchos’ three-man contingent went 2-6 on the first day and were all ousted from the tournament, leaving UCO without at least one All-American for the first time since the program was re-instated in 1973.

A mix of highs a lows for the Bronchos cul-minated with the end of David James’ 34-year run as head coach of the Bronchos.

But the highlights were still there.

UCO won its first three duals of the season. It

beat Williams Baptist 32-13 and Ouachita Baptist 29-12 on back-to-back nights in early December. A whole month later, the Bronchos beat Fort Hays State 30-13 to improve to 3-0.

UCO lost to Western State and Colorado Mesa before beating Simon Fraser at the Tracy Bor-han Duals in Gunnison, Colo.

In a return to MIAA action, the Bronchos beat Lindenwood before suffering their only con-ference loss of the season, a 21-15 defeat to Nebras-ka-Kearney.

At the Midwest Duals, the Bronchos fell short again, losing to Cali-

fornia Baptist and San Francisco State in Kear-ney, Neb.

However, from there UCO began to look like the perennial power it is.

The Bronchos beat Newman 29-12 on Jan. 19, and wouldn’t lose another dual for the rest of the season.

The Bronchos beat Maryville 24-15 on Jan. 22. Then UCO hit the road for a brief road trip that saw the Bronchos win at Ouachita Baptist on Jan. 24 and then again at Oklahoma City on Jan. 27.

UCO sent off its se-niors on Jan. 31 with a win over Central Missou-ri, 38-9.

And the Bronchos won twice on the road in the final week of the regular season, beating Colorado State-Pueblo 34-6 and Adams State 33-14 to finish the season 12-5.

At the MIAA Tour-nament, the Bronchos got first-place wins from Davenport and Factor, second-place wins from Zac D’Amico and Evan McGee, third-place wins from Blake Dauphin, Ai-ley, and Danny Carrillo.

Aaron Hane, Mason Thompson and Brock Warren all finished fourth at the tournament before the Bronchos embarked on an unusual trip through the postsea-son.

Josh Ailey went 27-11 last season at 141 pounds and was one of three national qualifiers for the Bronchos. [UCO Photo Services]

Central Oklahoma is in its fifth year as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The MIAA, a 14-member conference of NCAA Divi-sion II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Associa-tion.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain member-ship in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Cen-tral Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at

the time known as Northeast Missouri State), North-west Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the mem-bership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rol-la) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the con-ference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Mis-souri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its mem-bership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, Nebraska-Omaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

UCO, Lindenwood, Nebraska-Kearney and North-eastern State all become league members with the start of the 2012-13 academic year.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same in 2013, which leaves the conference with 14 schools. Lincoln and SBU are associate mem-bers who compete in women’s basketball.
